hair colouring

At this point, we all know that there are certain beauty trends that require more work than others.

One of these is opting to go blonde. Your coveted golden shade can be particularly elusive and leave you feeling annoyed when your hair takes on a more brassy appearance. Blonde hair can be very difficult to take care of.

However, if you get it right, it can be a fabulous shade and you will possibly never go back. Unless of course you are Kylie and can afford a ridiculous amount of hair care experts to be at your beck and call.

If you cannot in fact keep up with that chameleon Kardashian, then try these tricks to keep your blonde locks healthy and glowing:

Know your water:

Unless you are washing your hair in filtered and bottled water (which would be quite impractical and a bit odd), then it could be your water that's damaging your hair. The hard water in your showers can penetrate porous, colored hair which over time will alter the colour.

Your shampoo frequency:

The more often you wash your hair, the faster it can appear yellow or brassy, as shampooing tends to strip the color pigments. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know dry shampoo is the key to going longer between washes. If you're completely adverse, you can always rinse your hair with water and then condition as normal.

All of the purple:

Purple shampoo and conditioner is much easier to get a hold of than it was previously. However it still requires some expertise. If you overdo it, instead of lightly toning your hair, you'll end up altering the colour already there. Use either pupple shampoo or conditioner (but not both) only once a week and allow for two or three minutes before you rinse it out.

From oil-slicked to opal coloured, our hair has been seeing some bizarre trends this tea. It has become very clear that innovative hair colouring is having something of a moment.

Now there is a new application process that is promising to be just as cool as all of the others, maybe even better: hand pressed colour.

Cosmopolitan reports that the trend is designed to create beautiful blended effects much faster than traditional dye. It also looks like a painters dream.

Redken colourist Chiala Marvici explained to the magazine:

"I have a painting in my apartment that a friend did for me a while ago that has a lot of colors on it, and I fell asleep one night and dreamt of all these layers of paint living together on one surface.”

When she woke up, she thought about how beautiful that would be on hair, and she could “translate that vision onto the hair.”

The technique involves the colourist swirling different dyes (in the most random patterns you can imagine) onto a sheet of plexi-glass.

Then they place a section of hair flat on the glass, then they use a blunt knife to press the pattern onto the hair so the colours blend together.

The technique doesn’t actually leave the actual shape of the pattern painted on the glass like actual screen printing, but otherwise it is quite similar. To be honest, with the way beauty trends are escalating these days we would not be surprised if the next step was actually screen printing colour on your hair.

Are you getting bored with your hair? If you’re feeling a colour change, you should probably take some time to consider a few things.

We rounded up five of the most important things to consider before you take the plunge. It may not seem like such a big deal now, but in a few washes time when your supposedly blonde hair goes green, you’ll be having second thoughts.

How often do you want to colour your hair?

If you don’t want to end up getting your roots done every three weeks, you need to say so. If you tell your colourist how you feel about touch-ups, then can narrow down a colour situation you can realistically maintain.

Use a hair mask the day before.

This will prep your hair for the colour process to come and make sure it’s nice and hydrated to help your strands survive the colouring treatment.

You need to use some sun protection.

After you dye your hair be prepared to protect it from UV rays in order to avoid brassy and dull colour from taking over.

You also need to protect coloured hair from chlorine.

Your fresh platinum do may take on a green hue before you know it. So wet your hair, or apply conditioner all over, before getting in the pool to keep the cuticles filled in to avoid the chlorine being soaked up.

Not sure what you want? Make sure you know what you don’t want.

If you haven’t fully decided on your chosen colour, then at least be able to tell your hairdresser what it is you definitely don’t want. This can help them narrow down your options. Just remember if you tell them to do whatever they prefer you could end up being none too happy. So have some idea before you go through with it.
