From oil-slicked to opal coloured, our hair has been seeing some bizarre trends this tea. It has become very clear that innovative hair colouring is having something of a moment.

Now there is a new application process that is promising to be just as cool as all of the others, maybe even better: hand pressed colour.

Cosmopolitan reports that the trend is designed to create beautiful blended effects much faster than traditional dye. It also looks like a painters dream.

Redken colourist Chiala Marvici explained to the magazine:

"I have a painting in my apartment that a friend did for me a while ago that has a lot of colors on it, and I fell asleep one night and dreamt of all these layers of paint living together on one surface.”

When she woke up, she thought about how beautiful that would be on hair, and she could “translate that vision onto the hair.”

The technique involves the colourist swirling different dyes (in the most random patterns you can imagine) onto a sheet of plexi-glass.

Then they place a section of hair flat on the glass, then they use a blunt knife to press the pattern onto the hair so the colours blend together.

The technique doesn’t actually leave the actual shape of the pattern painted on the glass like actual screen printing, but otherwise it is quite similar. To be honest, with the way beauty trends are escalating these days we would not be surprised if the next step was actually screen printing colour on your hair.
