A new report has discovered some disappointing figures regarding employees with autism in Irish workplaces.

The findings are listed in ‘The Autism in the Workplace Report’ and was conducted by hiring platform IrishJobs and national autism charity AsIAm. 461 autistic people completed the survey.

Among the many shocking statistics, the report found that 6 out of 10 autistic people are afraid to open up to their employers and colleagues about their diagnosis. As a result, 40% of those surveyed never disclosed their diagnosis throughout their hiring process, and just 15% shared their diagnosis before or during their job interview.

6 out of 10 people also noted that their workplace does not have a dedicated autism-friendly policy. Furthermore, around half of employers are unsure what help or accommodations an autistic member of staff might need from them.

8 out of 10 of autistic people shared that they would be happy to reveal their diagnosis if they had reassurance that their employer would be supportive, but sadly, the same figure also said that they do not feel confident that their employer knows enough about autism to help them.

Lastly, 94% of those with autism stated that they think they could be an asset to any business if they were given the right tools and support to succeed. Unfortunately, 51% subsequently said that they are not getting those necessary supports at the moment.

IrishJobs and AsIAm decided to release their findings in honour of World Autism Day, which is taking place this Sunday, April 2.

Sam McIlveen, the Managing Director of StepStone Ireland, said that the findings showed that, for autistic people, “several barriers remain to their full integration within the workplace”.

“Foremost of these is the fear felt by autistic people around disclosing their diagnosis to a potential employer. This is compounded by a lack of confidence in the employer and the supports they can require,” he added.

Jason Watkins and his wife Clara Francis have opened up about the tragic death of their two-year-old daughter Maude who sadly passed away due to sepsis on New Year’s Day in 2011.

The Nativity star and Clara spoke about the days leading up to their daughter’s death and how they have experienced guilt because of it.

Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher on her podcast, Happy Mum, Happy Baby, Jason explained, “She had a cold and a sore throat… we never thought it was serious and at that point, it probably wasn’t and it must’ve gone on for about a week and we were like, ‘Hang about, this should’ve shifted by now’, and we took her to the GP”.

“I was worried it had gone to her chest”, Jason admitted before revealing he was still worried about his daughter after the GP visit. Clara then took her to A&E and the toddler was given steroids.

Later, Clara said she found her daughter unable to breathe, “She couldn't find breath”, so the couple brought her to the hospital.

“She was losing consciousness and she was pale and floppy. So we then decided not to order an ambulance and we just got in the car because it was relatively near”, Watkins detailed.

“I was driving and you were in the front seat and we were trying to keep her awake by shouting. It was really awful for about 10 minutes,15 minutes to get to the hospital”.

The Catch star continued, “I ran into the hospital, into triage, and they sent her straight in to be treated… and after about an hour she was calmer”.

The paediatric consultant told Jason and Clara to take Maude home so she would be in more calmer and familiar surroundings as she seemed to be getting better after her temperature went back to normal and she was given air.

“It didn’t feel right at the time, this is where the guilt comes in of course”, Jason said before his wife added, “When you hear that and you hear how ill she was, you just think, ‘How could they have let her go home?’”.

After spending around two hours in the hospital, the pair returned home with their daughter, not knowing she had sepsis at the time.

Recalling putting her daughter to bed that night in her cot, giggling as normal, Clara recalled the heartbreaking moment their other daughter Bessie told them she couldn't wake her sister up the next morning.

“Bessie came in our room because she shared a room with Maude and she said, ‘I can’t wake up Maude’, and I just knew. There was a part of me, my motherly instinct was, ‘She is really ill’, but because the doctors kept saying, ‘It’s okay, she’s fine’, I was like, ‘Oh okay’”.

“When I look back, my instinct was, ‘No, this is really serious’, and I wish I had been more trusting of my instinct”.

“To know that your child could potentially be a 14-year-old girl, going out and having a really fabulous life when it didn’t happen for her is particularly difficult”, Francis added.

Six months after their daughter's passing, an inquest into Maude's death was carried out because she had been discharged from hospital twice within 24 hours. This is when they discovered she unfortunately had sepsis.

Laura Anderson has been hitting back at trolls.

The former Love Island contestant announced last month that she is expecting her first child, and will co-parent with her ex-boyfriend Gary Lucy.

Despite the news of her pregnancy being a joyful thing, Laura has now admitted that the trolling she receives has increased since her announcement.

Taking to her Instagram stories last night, the 33-year-old posted two private messages she had been sent from different people. One of the messages was a clear death threat against her, while the other insisted that she needed to “get over” her pregnancy.

Following the two shocking posts, Laura then went on to write a powerful message against trolling.

“I don’t like to share the negativity I receive on here but it has been more than usual recently. I’ve blocked so many people for disgusting and damaging comments,” she began.

“It blows my mind that people conjure up such strong assumptions of what they think goes on behind closed doors or behind bull c**p media stories,” she added.

Laura then went on to admit that her pregnancy, alongside her recent separation from Gary, has left her feeling vulnerable. “Never in my life did I think I could receive negative accusations on my character from strangers while going through a break up and pregnant,” she penned.

“My tolerance for trolling at the minute is SO low,” Laura continued. “It’s honestly so damaging to mental and physical health that I thought this was obvious.”

The Celebs Go Dating star then went on to praise those that have been sending her uplifting messages and support. “Thankfully the positive outweighs the negative but sometimes it’s hard to see when you’re in the firing line. I really appreciate the amazing messages and I support you right back,” she wrote.

Laura concluded her lengthy message with a final tribute to her supporters. “Rant over. Cheers to the normal people, you keep me sane online,” she praised.

Well done to Laura for calling out these awful comments.

Kelsey Parker has opened up about life after the death of her husband Tom Parker as the one year anniversary of his death approaches.

Tom Parker, known for being a member of the boyband The Wanted, tragically passed away on March 30, 2022 following a battle with brain cancer.

Now, speaking to OK!, Kelsey has detailed the ‘hardest time’ since Tom’s passing and has revealed she developed a tic from the anxiety she is feeling as his anniversary nears.

“This is probably the hardest time since he died. Going from February into March was such a hard transition because I knew what was coming this month”.

“It’s been a year since I lost him, but it feels like yesterday. I’ve not really wanted to face this month because it’s the realisation that he’s not been here for a whole year and how much we all miss him”.

She continued, “I was just dreading this month. When I met my friend for coffee I kept clearing my throat and coughing, like a little tic. I think it’s just the anxiety of this month and the struggle. It’s like living in a s**t show”.

“I don’t want to feel like it’s s**t. But obviously it is, as it’s so difficult. Me and Tom were the ‘Positive Parkers’ and I try and see the positive in everything”.

“But honestly, I don’t feel like there is a positive in my life at the moment. It’s just awful what’s happened to us as a family”.

The mum-of-two then shared how she and her family will spend the day of his anniversary, explaining she wants to ‘celebrate’ the occasion rather than it be ‘really sad’.

“On 30 March, we’re going to walk to his bench. Tom is the man with all the benches. He has three! This is actually in a secret place that no one knows the location of, but it’s really special to me and my family. We’ll lay some flowers and just think about him”.

“The next day I’m going to do some drinks for him. I’ve invited everyone along and we’ll raise a glass to him. I’m just going to try and celebrate it because I don’t want it to be really sad, even though I’m obviously going to be feeling all the emotions over again”.

The 32-year-old went on to admit what she misses most about Tom. “My heart is hurting and it aches for him. You miss the humour, you miss the cuddles, you miss the intimacy. I just miss everything that we shared”.

“I looked back at his Instagram the other night and watched his videos that he did in lockdown. And I just miss his laugh”.

Sir David Jason has revealed he has a daughter that he never knew existed until now.

The Only Fools and Horses actor was ‘delighted’ to find out about his 52-year-old daughter and explained he was ‘surprised’ to hear about her after all these years.

Not only that, but his new-found daughter, Abi Harris, has a 10-year-old son named Charlie, making David a first-time granddad!

In an interview with The Mirror, David said, “To say it was a surprise to find out I had a daughter from years ago is an understatement”.

“However, on settling with the news, I am delighted that I am now able to get to know Abi and so we meet up when we can”.

The 83-year-old then went on to say his 62-year-old wife Gill and 22-year-old daughter Sophie welcomed Abi into their family along with her son after they got over the shocking news.

“My wife, Gill, and daughter, Sophie, have been very supportive and understanding and have embraced Abi and welcomed her and her young son into her now wider family”.

Abi was born in 1970 after Jason had a brief relationship with her mum, actress Jennifer Hill. David and Jennifer had stayed in contact over the years and Sir David had even met Abi multiple times in the past but never knew she was his child.

According to The Mirror, Abi thought her mum’s husband, Geoffrey Davion- known for starring in Miss Marple– was her biological dad.

After hearing about her mum’s short relationship with David, and noticing how similar her nose was to the actor, Abi was convinced David was her dad. A paternity test confirmed Sir David was in fact Abi’s biological father.

Sir David and Abi, as well as Jason’s new grandson, have been spending time together to catch up on lost years.
