Yearly Archives: 2023

Vicky Pattison has opened up about planning her wedding with her fiancé Ercan Ramadan, and detailed their plans for expanding their family.

The couple have been in a relationship for four years and Ercan popped the big question while they were on holiday in Dubai together last year.

Speaking to OK! About how ‘challenging’ it has been to plan their wedding while undergoing her egg freezing procedure, the former I’m a Celeb star explained how the process is going.

“This year I really wanted to be productive and proactive. I wanted to be this person who froze her eggs and found a wedding venue all at once”.

“But it doesn’t work like that. What’s that expression? Life is what happens when you are busy making plans”.

Vicky admitted, “The wedding process has been more challenging than I anticipated. I’m still waiting for that WOW moment, when I come across a venue but haven’t found it yet”.

“We may not marry first. It might be the year after that, as I don’t have to be married to have a baby. Everything will happen when it should”.

The former Geordie Shore star then spoke about having her eggs frozen as she ‘doesn’t want a child right now’, but would potentially like to expand her and Ercan’s family in the future.

“The plan now is to freeze a mixture of embryos and eggs. I was just freezing my eggs before but freezing embryos has a better success rate so I am doing both”.

“I am 35, but I don’t want a child right now. I’m not ready. No one’s ready. Ercan and I have been dating for four years and he’s 29. The last thing I want to do is force him into a situation where he’s not confident or not ready and then he becomes resentful. Where does that leave me? What’s the point?”.

Pattison added, “Luckily, I live in an age where medical science makes this an option for me. I’m really healthy. I’m financially independent. And this is the right choice for me. I mean, honestly, I’m doing this to relieve myself of pressure”.

Vicky started her egg freezing journey at the end of 2022 but had to put it on hold as a cyst was found on her ovary at the start of this year.

Earlier this month, the reality TV star revealed the cyst was gone, meaning she could get back on track with the process. “At today's scan we found out that the cyst had gone and we are finally able to take our next steps to becoming parents one day”.

Irish households contribute up to 31% of food waste in Ireland. We’re all culprits – whether it’s the milk left out on the counter, the forgotten broccoli at the back of the fridge, or the mouldy bread at the end of the bag. Reducing food waste doesn’t just make sense in terms of saving money – about €700 per household per year – it’s also a vital ingredient in reducing greenhouse emissions on a global scale by almost 10%.

This Stop Food Waste Day, from spring cleaning your fridge to meal planning, HelloFresh has some top tips to reduce food (and financial) waste.

Plan:

Before buying new ingredients, check what you have in the cupboard. By keeping track of what you have and don't have, you can avoid purchasing duplicate food items. Creating meal plans is also an effective way to buy exactly what you need. Disregard special offers and buy only what you plan to use. HelloFresh portions out ingredients to minimise waste, with many customers reporting less waste overall, including 70% fewer scraps during food preparation.

Strategic Storage:

Imagine your cupboard as a jigsaw puzzle – all the parts need to fit together. We often use whatever containers are in our kitchen to store food, but different sizes waste space. Use consistent containers and stack bags of food. Think about the temperature and humidity of your cupboards, as this will have an impact on the shelf life of your food. Store bread in a bread bin or a paper bag at room temperature. Don't store bread in the fridge, as this will speed up the process of deterioration.

Is your fridge in tip-top shape?

Be sure your fridge is set to the correct temperature and learn what goes where. The top shelf is the warmest part of the fridge and best for ready-to-eat dairy products and other prepared foods/ leftovers. Keep milk there too – it's a myth that milk goes in the drawer of the fridge, as it gets a blast of hot air every time you open the door. Keep raw meat, fish, and poultry in sealed packaging on the bottom shelf, which is the coolest part of the fridge. The bottom drawer of the fridge keeps vegetables fresh and crisp. Door racks are the best places for eggs, condiments, jam, and juice.

Freeze!

Slice and freeze your bread. If you buy a baguette that becomes rock hard, turn it into breadcrumbs and freeze them! Defrost the bread as needed or use one slice at a time and toast to defrost. Blanch vegetables and freeze them – then put them into the steamer when you're ready to use them. This saves time and prevents your veggies from going to the landfill.

Repurpose:

As part of its commitment to reducing surplus food, HelloFresh has partnered with Irish Food Waste reduction pioneer FoodCloud – so far this partnership has led to the redistribution of over 12,000 meals to those who need it avoiding nearly 12 tonnes CO2 equivalent. At home, find ways to redistribute food to your local community – or find inventive ways to use up ingredients.

Through this partnership with FoodCloud, HelloFresh is helping combat food waste and support local communities. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also addresses food insecurity by providing nutritious meals to those who need it most.

The Dublin Well Woman Centre has conducted a study that found a significantly high degree of misunderstanding on the topics of fertility and contraception, with over 50% of women using a contraceptive that is linked with failure

The Dublin Well Woman Centre is an organisation that supports women’s health issues and particularly, women’s reproductive health issues. They provide a variety of health care services including family planning, counselling and sexual health services.

Client-centric and committed to providing the latest in health care development, the not-for-profit organisation champions women’s sexual health at every life stage.

Their undertaking of this project is rooted in the belief that ‘a woman’s equality is strengthened through her ability to control her own fertility, and being able to receive clear information on all of her options, and to access the most effective form of contraception, without barriers’.

The study was conducted on 1,014 women aged between 17 and 45 who are sexually active with male partners to find out what their contraception habits are. The subjects answered an online survey between March 10 and March 23, 2020, and varied in their social class, marital status, living situation and sexual orientation.

Overall, there is significant evidence that there is a real lack of understanding among a significant proportion of 17-45s in relation to fertility and contraception. Almost 1 in 3 (30%) women aged 17-45 are not aware that LARC is the most effective form of contraception. This form includes injections, intrauterine devices (IUDs) and subdermal contraceptive implants.

With 1 in 10 women still believing that the withdrawal method is a 100% effective form of contraceptive, and 21% of participants believing that impregnation while experiencing your period is impossible, it is clear to see that our sex education is not up to scratch.

Condoms and the Contraceptive pill came out on top for the most used form of contraception, with 31% of survey-takers having used the contraceptive pill and 25% using condoms, despite the Dublin Well Woman Centre’s efforts to educate women about LARC alternatives.

Only 9% of subjects used the hormonal coil, or IUS and 4% used implanted contraceptive capsules. At 3% and 8% respectively were the practice of abstinence and withdrawal method. 6% of subjects say that they use no form of contraception.

While 60% of women aged 17-45 understand that not having to remember to use contraception on a daily, weekly or monthly basis is a benefit of LARC, with almost the same proportion (58%) believing that a benefit of LARC is that they are highly effective forms of contraception, it is still not the most popular form.

It seems the reason for its unpopularity is that almost 3 in 5 (57%) women aged 17-45 who are aware of the term LARC believe that how their body might react to a LARC is a negative aspect of LARC. Just over 2 in 5 (41%) claim that they heard that some LARC are uncomfortable to have inserted and almost 4 in 10 (37%) are of the perception that they cost too much upfront/are too expensive.

Some of the other major findings uncovered by the study are as follows:

Just over half (51%) of women aged 17-45 claim that they have had sex where no contraception was used and claim that it has happened at least once in the last twelve months. Within that statistic, 17-24 year olds are most likely to claim that they have had sex where no contraception was used once or more often in the past 12 months with 75% answering that no contraception was used in the last twelve months.

Almost a third (31%) of females aged 17-45 have had sex in the past where the contraception failed and 73% of those who have experienced a contraceptive failure in the past claim that they were using a condom/male sheath when the contraception failed.

Just over a third (35%) of those that have had sex where the contraception failed claim that it resulted in a pregnancy, with 30% of those aged 17-24 who claim to have had sex where the contraception failed, claim it resulted in a pregnancy.

Those aged 17-24 (53%) are significantly more likely to claim that the cost of the contraception is important when deciding on which type of contraception to use.

25% of women who have had sex where no contraception was used or where the contraception failed, claim that they took an emergency contraceptive pill at least once in the past 12 months.

Almost 1 in 5 (18%) women aged 17-45 claim that they have to travel outside of the town/city/village that they live in to access the contraception they are currently using.

36% of women’s first source of information for contraception is the GP and 17% go to search online. 8% go to women’s health clinics and a further 7% consult with friends as their first source.

30% of subjects thought that it was false that LARC are the most cost-effective form of contraception over the long-term, when it is true.

49% of subjects did not realise the failure rate for the pill is 9%, meaning that 9 women out of every 100 using the pill will become pregnant.

The researchers found that the top factors that influence contraception choice are: 1. How effective it is in reducing the chances of a pregnancy 2. Positive health benefits such as lighter/less painful periods, improved acne etc. 3. Protection against STIs 4. How easy it is to access the contraception from my local healthcare provider 5.

There is a low level of hormones or no hormones entering my body 6. How quickly it will allow my normal fertility to return once I stop using it 7. The cost of the contraception and 8. It doesn't have to be taken each day

The three key takeaways from this study are that:

1. Women are relying on less effective forms of contraception to prevent pregnancy,

2. Women face many barriers to accessing the most appropriate forms of contraception

3. A significant number of women have a lack of understanding about contraception

The Dublin Well Woman Centre hopes that this study will spur government action to prioritise the introduction of free contraception for sexually active women within their reproductive years.

Is anyone else starting to feel a bit of springiness in the air? The birds are twittering away in the trees, shoots are starting to push up through the earth and the dark cloud of winter seems to be slowly receding.

Either way, I've been inspired to try some fresh and light spring recipes and finish up with the heavy, wintry fare that I've been making the last while. I was looking for something with a bit of oomph and something that would be super tasty, when I came across this stunning risotto recipe.

Bursting with green veggies, bright, citrusy hints of lemon and fluffy, herb-infused rice, it seemed like the perfect spring treat for this bright and cheery week!

asparagus on chopping board

Ingredients

1 lemon

400g risotto rice

2 bunches of asparagus, chopped

1 can peas

Salt and pepper

Olive oil

2 shallots

2 cloves garlic

100ml white wine

200ml vegetable broth

Parmigiano reggianno

1 bunch parsley

White Ceramic Plate With Green and Yellow Dish

Set a pot of water boiling on a medium heat and use it to steam chopped asparagus. Set the asparagus aside in a bowl of ice water once cooked to prevent it from going soggy.

Add olive oil to a pan over a medium heat and add chopped shallots and diced garlic to the pan, Allow them to saute for two to three minutes before adding risotto rice.

Person Holding Knife Slicing Green Vegetable

Allow it to toast there for a couple of minutes before adding your wine and then gradually adding your vegetable broth. Keep stirring it in until the rice is al dente and the sauce has a creamy texture to it.

Removing your asparagus from the ice water, add it to the pan along with your peas.

Grate lemon zest over the pan before squeezing in the juice of the full lemon. Season with salt and pepper and chopped parsley.

Serve with freshly grated parmegiano and viola! The perfect springy dish to boost your weekend!
