Irish households are being encouraged to discover Tenderstem®, broccoli’s tastier cousin, as the vibrant vegetable becomes the hero at meal times

Irish households are being encouraged to discover Tenderstem, the leggy brassica that is being hailed as broccoli’s tastier cousin! Have you tried it yet? It’s easy to love. Whether you’re boiling, steaming, air frying or roasting, Tenderstem is the perfect veg to take your meals to new heights.

The Tenderstem®: Broccoli but Better campaign, being activated* by Global Fresh Exotic (GFE), the Meath-based company that holds the license for Tenderstem® in Ireland, has been launched as a result of the growing popularity of the leggy versatile vegetable, which not only tastes delicious but stands head and shoulders above all others! This is broccoli but BETTER!

Tenderstem® broccoli, as the name suggests, is tender, juicy, succulently sweet and slightly nutty, all wrapped up in a gorgeous crunch. It’s deliciously tasty from top to tip, meaning zero waste. As part of the Broccoli but Better campaign a dedicated website www.tenderstem.ie has been created, packed with hundreds of delicious recipes for all meal times and inspired by cuisines of the world, plus helpful ‘how-to’ videos, nutritional information and lots more. Or check out their mouth-watering Instagram @tenderstemIreland for tasty inspiration such as Garlic, Chilli and Lemon Tenderstem, Tenderstem Truffle and Chestnut Gratin or a Greek-style Risotto with Spinach and Tenderstem.

Tenderstem broccoli packs a nutritional punch. Just 80g provides one of your five-a-day. It is high in folate, vitamin A and vitamin C – all of which contribute to the normal function of the immune system.  The mighty vegetable is also high in fibre and provides a source of potassium, which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure and a healthy functioning nervous system.

Available all year round, thanks to a supply of licensed growers in Ireland and internationally, and hand-picked for the finest quality, Tenderstem is fast becoming the hero of the dinner table.  You can enjoy Tenderstem broccoli in lots of different ways – it’s super versatile! Here’s a handy guide to cook your Tenderstem to perfection.

  • RAW (0 mins) – If you enjoy the taste of Tenderstem you can eat it raw for a fresh and crunchy snack. Simply give it a wash and enjoy with some hummus, a creamy cheese sauce or just on its own.
  • BOIL (3-4 mins) – Add washed Tenderstem to a pan of boiling water for 3 – 4 mins. You can test the stem for tenderness to your liking with a sharp knife. Drain and serve.
  • GRIDDLED (8 – 10 mins) / GRILL (8 mins) / BBQ (3 mins) – Wash your Tenderstem and coat with a small amount of oil. Add to a hot griddle pan or BBQ and cook for around 8 – 10 minutes. You’re looking to achieve a little bit of charring to the stem and florets to bring out a delicious nutty flavour. Try serving with a sprinkle of salt and a squeeze of lemon.
  • STEAMED (3-4 mins) – Bring some water to the boil in your plan and place your washed Tenderstem on top in a steamer pan. Steam for 3 – 4 minutes. The Tenderstem broccoli should turn bright green and tender when it’s ready.
  • STIR FRIED (5 mins) – Wash your Tenderstem and cut the stems into smaller chunks. Add to a hot wok and a little bit of oil and fry for 5 minutes, add some seasoning as it cooks and have fun with flavours!
  • ROASTED (12 – 15 mins) – Add some washed Tenderstem to a roasting dish and drizzle with a little oil. Roast for 12 – 15 mins at 180 degrees. Season to your liking and serve.
  • AIR FRIED (6 – 8 minutes) – Lightly oil your washed Tenderstem broccoli and stir fry to evenly coat. Air Fry at 180 degrees, add some seasoning and salt to serve… get creative!

Whatever way you decide to cook it, this simple recipe is perfect for the warmer weather.

Tenderstem® broccoli with flaked almonds, parsley and lemon butter sauce

Prep: 5 minutes

Cook: 10 minutes

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 500g Tenderstem® broccoli
  • 70g salted butter, cubed
  • 40g flaked almonds
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Leaves picked from 10g/about 10 sprigs of flat leaf parsley, very finely chopped

Method

Prepare a steamer (you will need 2 or 3 tiers for this quantity) or a large saucepan of boiling water.

Steam the Tenderstem® broccoli for 4 minutes or blanch for 2 minutes so that the Tenderstem® broccoli is only partially cooked, bright green and still a little crunchy. Drain through a sieve or colander then leave for a minute or two under cold running water to stop the Tenderstem® broccoli from cooking further.

When ready to eat, put a large wok over a very high heat. Leave for 30 seconds so the wok is hot then add the cubed butter, which should melt and foam very quickly. Add the almonds, being careful not to burn them. When the almonds are turning golden and there’s a lovely nutty smell, pour in the lemon juice and then the Tenderstem® broccoli. This will cool the pan down a little, so ensure the hob is still at the highest setting.

Use tongs to toss the Tenderstem® broccoli through the buttery almonds. Add the parsley and transfer to a serving platter after just 60-90 seconds, making sure you scrape all the lemony, herby butter and almonds over the top. Serve immediately.

Chloe Burrows has seemingly confirmed the rekindling of a Love Island romance!

Rumours have been circulating in recent weeks that 2021 winners Millie Court and Liam Reardon have got back together.

The Essex lass and Welsh lad ended their relationship less than a year after leaving the villa together.

The pair had their struggles in the villa as Liam got close to another girl during Casa Amor. Eventually, Millie and Liam were able to solve their issues and went on to win the show, before announcing their split in July of last year.

However, fans of the ITV reality show are now convinced that they have found proof that the former winners are back together.

Millie’s best friend and Love Island runner-up, Chloe Burrows, posted a TikTok video last night, showcasing the two girls treating themselves to a Chinese takeaway.

During the course of the video, a male voice can be heard in the distance, asking if they want some Cokes with their meal.

The man’s voice, which seemingly has the twinge of a Welsh accent, can be heard shouting “Chlo?”, before Chloe agrees to the drink offer.

@chloeburrows

A chinese for me please!!

Fans became even more convinced of the mystery man’s identity when Chloe goes on to imitate the Welsh accent, exclaiming, “A Coke Zero!”

In the comments section of Chloe’s video, fans wasted no time in sharing their opinions on the man’s identity.

“I hear Liam, cheers for the confirmation Chloe!” teased one follower.

“Sorry but is that Liam speaking in the background or am I going insane hearing it,” another wrote.

“That is def Liam we have the same accent we’re from the same town, I know a Merthyr accent when I hear one,” a third added.

Speaking on Chloe’s podcast Chloe vs The World last month, Millie confirmed that she is once again in a relationship. During the interview, she decided not to say who she is dating, explaining that she struggled with her relationship with Liam being so public.

“This next chapter, I will be keeping it secret for a little bit, just to see how it goes,” she noted at the time.

Improving air quality, tackling food waste and highlighting how children benefit from outdoor play in the natural world are among the many themes which will be explored at Bord Bia Bloom 2023. Ireland’s favourite festival of flowers, food and fun, returns to the Phoenix Park, Dublin, this June bank holiday weekend (June 1st-5th) with another vibrant mix of thought-provoking show gardens, delicious local food, and interactive entertainment for visitors of all ages.

Bord Bia expect to welcome more than 100,000 visitors to the show over five action-packed days. Speaking at the launch of this year’s event, Jim O’Toole, CEO, Bord Bia said, “Bord Bia Bloom was created to offer a world-class, uplifting and engaging showcase for Irish horticulture, food and drink. Now in its 17th year, the show provides an invaluable platform to highlight important societal issues such as climate change, sustainable production and health and wellbeing. We are proud to see how Bloom has evolved into a unique festival experience, with nature and sustainable living at its heart, while also continuing to offer our horticulture, food and drink clients the opportunity to showcase their latest products and innovations.”

Glorious Gardens

At the centrepiece of Bord Bia Bloom, a total of *22 small, medium, and large show gardens and feature gardens will provide a colourful demonstration of the latest trends and innovations in garden design. One of the stand-out themes for 2023 is that many of the gardens focus on spaces for children and young people. The impact of climate change and making better use of the outdoors also feature as recurring themes in the 2023 show gardens including “A Breathing Space for Fingal” by Fingal County Council, the National Dairy Council’s “Embracing the Elements” garden; Citroën Power of One alternative urban front garden by Citroën, and the Green Cities Europe “Greening our Cities” garden. Many of this year's showstopping gardens also feature reclaimed and upcycled materials and will be relocating after the festival as permanent gardens elsewhere.

Along with a dazzling display of show gardens, gardening enthusiasts will find plenty of inspiration in the ever-popular ‘Postcard Gardens’, which include nine small but perfectly formed pop-up gardens that are designed and built by community groups, schools, and training groups from across Ireland. There will also be five days of gardening talks, a bustling Nursery Village featuring some of Ireland's leading nurseries, floral displays from the Ireland’s finest floral artists and a botanical art exhibition.

Inspire, Educate and Entertain

According to Laura Douglas, Head of Bord Bia Bloom "this year's festival will be a truly immersive experience, designed to inspire, educate and entertain visitors in equal measure. Bord Bia Bloom continues to adapt and evolve, and we are delighted to introduce a number of new and exciting features for 2023 including a redesign of the popular Food Village, the introduction of the Funky Food Fleet which will bring a collection of Ireland’s tastiest food trucks to the festival for the first time, and Grafton Street’s best buskers will join us to entertain the crowds. Meanwhile, we have an increased focus on sustainability content with a larger-than-ever Conservation Area and a new ‘Sustainable Living’ stage with five days of talks planned to cover everything from food waste and beekeeping to biodiversity and GIY. We look forward to warmly welcoming visitors in just a few weeks' time!”

In addition to live cookery demonstrations from some of Ireland’s leading chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Rory O’Connell, Fiona Uyema, JP McMahon, Edward Hayden, Brian McDermott and Shane Smith, the Quality Kitchen stage will host interviews with more than 40 Irish food producers.

There is also plenty to do for all the family with live entertainment on the Main Stage, while the ‘Budding Bloomers’ area promises to keep children engaged and entertained with willow weaving, planting games, toddler play area and much more!

RTÉjr will also be central to this space with daily storytelling, a kids disco and magic shows.

Finally, RTÉ lyric fm is back for with what is shaping up to be their biggest presence to date with great music, lyric fm favourites and exclusive events for Bloom visitors.

Irish cooking sensation Donal Skehan has revealed the personal struggles he recently faced in the “hardest year” of his life. In a new interview on ‘The Number’, the hit podcast by Darren Kennedy, Skehan reveals that in the months leading up to the 2020 onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, he had been struggling with “no consistency to life”, overwhelmed with the demands of his career and being forced to suddenly uproot his family from LA back to Ireland at the beginning of the first lockdown. This pressure, coupled with the devastating news that his father had prostate cancer, left the award-winning cookbook author at his lowest ebb.

Podcaster Darren Kennedy

Discussing how he navigated his father’s diagnosis, coupled with not being able to see his parents due to the Covid restrictions in place at the time, Skehan admits that his “lifeline completely shut down…elements of depression and anxiety crept in”. Having moved back for Dublin after a five-year stint in LA, with a newborn and a two-year-old in tow, Skehan recalls how being isolated from his parents, his support system, left him feeling like his “world was torn apart”.

Reflecting on that difficult period, Skehan admits that it has changed his, and his family’s life for the better, having been gifted a newfound perspective and appreciation for life: “had we not gone through that, we would not have the understanding of what we wanted. It really did put a focus on things”.

Elsewhere in the wide-ranging discussion on the numbers that have had the most significance in his life, Skehan touches on the unspoken and often harsh realities that fathers and indeed all parents face when navigating life with a newborn. Reflecting on the days after the birth of his first son, Noah, the popular food blogger recalls how he struggled to make peace with the reality that life as he knew it was forever changed: “I found it really hard to give up that control to this tiny little baby. I think very few people talk about it”. Initial shellshock aside, Skehan poignantly admits that fatherhood has given him a new lease of life “your perspective really does change”.

Commenting on his chat with Donal Skehan, Darren Kennedy said: I wholeheartedly enjoyed my conversation with Donal, and I know his honest and open reflections on the unspoken, often difficult realities of parenthood and of course the personal mental health issues he faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, will resonate with and provide both comfort and inspiration to so many people. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the full episode. It really is a thought provoking and heartfelt chat!

‘The Number’ is available on all streaming platforms. Other series one guests include DJ Fat Tony, Roxie Nafousi, Nicola Roberts, Panti Bliss, Edel Coffey and Jennifer Zamparelli.
