If you or your loved ones plan on diving into the sea over the summer months, then you might need to have a re-think about where to go.

A select number of beaches in Dublin, Donegal and Galway have been declared unsafe for swimming in, meaning that swimmers have now been advised not to enter the waters.

The Front Strand, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, the Lady’s Bay, Buncrana, Co Donegal, and Trá na mBan, An Spidéal, Co Galway have all failed water-quality tests.

During their inspections, it was discovered that these beaches have been polluted with wastewater from sewage systems. This has been caused by a multitude of factors, including leaks from farmlands, urban streets, or animal waste.

If swimmers were to enter the waters at these beaches, they could run the risk of developing a skin rash or an upset stomach.

These shocking results were found in the Environmental Protection Agency’s annual Bathing Water Quality Report. The locations were tested between June 1 and September 15 of last year.

While EPA was only able to test Ireland’s 148 official bathing areas, the report concluded that 97% of our national beaches met or exceeded the expected water quality standards.

In order to test more areas and address any potential concerns, the EPA has requested local authorities to declare more bathing areas as official ones, so that they can be included in the annual inspection report.

Overall, 117 beaches were classified as ‘excellent’ and 20 were given a ‘good’ status. Meanwhile, seven beaches in the east and southeast were labelled as ‘sufficient’, alongside the three spots in Dublin, Donegal and Galway that were found to be of ‘poor’ quality.

In terms of an action plan, the EPA has called on Uisce Éireann to improve their “maintenance of treatment plants and networks.”

The public can also play their part by disposing of dog litter properly, reporting pollution and asking their local authorities to name more official swimming areas.

Call the Midwife’s social media team posted more information in the caption of the post that explained, “Behind the scenes on the new Call the Midwife Christmas Special: The Turners take to the road!”.

“Yesterday it was off to the Royal Dockyard in Chatham, Kent, to film some driving sequences for our new Christmas Special”.

“This involved a lot of technical fiddling and special effects, but luckily the rain held off! Max Macmillan and Stephen McGann, who play Timothy and Patrick Turner, were confined to the small driver's cabin in their many layers of winter clothing, which – combined with members of the crew squeezed into the back passenger seats – became rather steamy and airless!”.

They continued, “Also, it was impossible for the other crew to get into the car to present the clapperboard to the camera at the beginning of takes, so the job fell to Max – a job he took very seriously, judging from the picture”.

“Filming is off to a WONDERFUL start, and it was great to be back at the dockyard, where the official Call the Midwife tour takes place”.

They added, “Call the Midwife returns with a new Christmas Special and Series 13 in 2024 xx”.

Filming for Series 13 of Call the Midwife began at the beginning of May and will also be released next year.

Jordan and Naomi Banjo have shared a huge milestone with their son Cassius!

The couple’s five-year-old boy had never had his hair cut before, but yesterday he decided to take the plunge.

In a few emotional posts to Instagram last night, mum Naomi shared a ‘before’ snap of Cassius sitting in the barbers’ chair, ready for his transformation.

“So Cass has been asking for a hair cut for a while now… and when I say cut… he meant he wanted it cut off,” the 31-year-old penned.

“So we promised him for his birthday we would take him to the barbers to get it exactly how he wanted,” she continued, adding that Cassius picked the style himself.

Then, to the delight of their audience, the proud parents shared a beautiful video montage of Cassius getting his locks trimmed. At the end of the montage, the clip debuts his grown-up, short hair cut.

“Cass turned 5 and said ‘mummy, daddy, I want cool short hair’…and that’s what you got little man, looking like you're about to walk into the Love Island villa with this trim,” Diversity dancer Jordan joked in the post’s caption.

Since sharing the emotional video, Cassius has received lots of heartfelt messages from Jordan and Naomi’s audience.

“Mr steal your girl,” Jordan’s brother Ashley Banjo teased.

“Oh my god!! How bloody handsome,” one fan commented.

“You look too cool for school little man,” another replied.

Following their lovely responses, Naomi took to her Instagram stories earlier today to share a deeper insight into Cassius’ decision.

“We’ve been telling Cass for a while and he needed a ‘trim’ as we wasn’t sure how he would take it and was trying to gear him up cuz he really needed one! Then he just kept saying he ‘wanted hair like daddy’ and we left it a few months to make sure he was definitely sure,” she explained.

“He’s had quite a few ‘girl’ comments over the last month or so as well, not only from people at school but in restaurants and I think this was another reason he wanted it off,” the mum-of-three noted further, concluding that Cassius’ happiness is “most important.”

We love Cassius' new look!

The former Coronation Street star had been facing rumours in recent days that she had separated from her husband Scott Ratcliff.

Up until now, Kym had chosen to stay silent on the speculation. However, the 46-year-old has now dropped some significant hints that she is no longer with Scott.

Earlier today, fans were quick to spot that Kym has made a subtle change to her Instagram account’s bio.

Prior to this change, the TV presenter’s bio used to pay tribute to her career, her children and her grandchildren. At the time, it also included a loving reference to her marriage, noting herself as “wife to Scott”.

Now, Kym has removed any mention of both her marriage and Scott at the top of her Instagram account. Instead, her entire bio reads: “Mum to David, Emilie, Polly and Archie. YaYa to Teddy,Polly & Clay. Actor, presenter, singer.”

This sign from Kym comes after she was seen in public without her wedding ring for the very first time.

Last night, the former Hear’Say singer attended the Pride of Manchester Awards with her 26-year-old daughter Emilie.

Although Kym looked showstopping in a figure-hugging black dress, she was also noticeably not wearing her wedding or engagement bands.

“What an incredible night @prideofbritain pride of Manchester awards,” the mum-of-four penned on Instagram after the event.

Vicky Pattison has revealed she is ‘overwhelmed and emotional’ by the results of her egg retrieval.

The former winner of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here has shared an update on her fertility and egg freezing journey as she found out the results of her egg retrieval just before she jetted off to Dubai to celebrate her friend’s hen party.

She posted a raw update alongside tearful photos of herself, snaps of her in hospital gowns and videos of her at the fertility clinic to her 5.3M Instagram followers.

Credit: Vicky Pattison Instagram

Vicky explained, “So here goes: First up, f**k me what a wild ride that was. I absolutely would not recommend going on a hen do straight after the egg retrieval process btw- not only was my body all over the place but my hormones were just crazy- so many tears & even a little panic attack thrown in for good measure”.

“I just felt so overwhelmed & emotional- like I wasn't in control of myself at all. I'm so grateful I had my family & lovely friends around me though- otherwise I would have just been a mess”.

“Right, so results! As you know we drained 12 follicles & found 10 eggs, 9 of which were mature. We immediately decided on a 3/6 split & froze 3 eggs straight away. The remaining 6 eggs then went on to be fertilised by @ercan_ram's 'donation'  4 of which were successfully turned into embryos & 3 of those withstood the blastocyst process”.

Credit: Vicky Pattison Instagram

Pattison excitedly continued, “Meaning that we have 3 eggs & 3 embryos now safely stored away in the freezer should we need them. A result we are super content with & really grateful for”.

The former Geordie Shore star went on to reveal she has created a video diary to show the ‘highs & lows of this entire process’ in order to ‘create something super honest & authentic’.

“My hope is that it will help women struggling with their own journeys & also encourage a little more understanding & compassion around the subject- as well as helping women realise their own options”.

Credit: Vicky Pattison Instagram

Vicky first revealed she was starting the process of freezing her eggs at the end of 2022, but due to finding a cyst on her ovary at the beginning of this year, had to put the process on hold.

In April, the 35-year-old revealed she was able to restart her egg freezing journey as the cyst had gone. “We are finally able to take our next steps to becoming parents one day”, Vicky announced at the time.

The reality TV star is engaged to partner Ercan Ramadan, who proposed to her while on holiday in Dubai after they had been in a relationship for four years.

Rome is one of Europe’s most beautiful and best cities for a mini break away with bae – especially if you both love history and great food!

Full of some of Europe’s most iconic ruins, the best pasta you’ll ever eat in your life and pretty winding streets that have square after beautiful square to sit out in with an Aperol Spritz, it’s a must-visit for you next weekend away together. Whether you’re a foodie, history fanatic or even just want some super Instagrammable pictures, it’s definitely top of our list for couple’s getaways.

But because there is simply so much to eat, do and see, we’ve made a 3-day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit there and hit up all the most important historical spots – along with a few hidden gems – the best restaurants and how to find the best spots for a truly jaw-dropping pic!

Day One

Colosseum, Italy

We found it a good strategy to get your heaviest day out of the way first, which involved doing a lot of the major historical stuff. You might not want to do all of it, which is fair because it was definitely a long day, but we can say everything was well-worth doing.

We did all this in one day because these historical sites are all grouped together in the south of the city. They’re a little bit away from the rest of our sites, so it’s easiest to group them all together. Hit up the Colosseum first and be sure to have your day ticket that covers the Forum as well booked through their official site. There are plenty of people around offering tours but we found the audio guides very helpful and much cheaper. Be sure to go as early in the morning as you can to avoid the crush, crowds and heat.

Colosseum, Italy

The Colosseum has a mini museum inside as well that gives you tons of information so you can walk through the history of the ruins. If you want a picture of the iconic building, there are steps that lead up to another level on Piazza del Colosseo up to via Nicoli Salvi, which is where you can sit up on the wall and get an amazing shot of the building behind you. Again, go early so you aren’t swamped with hawkers and other tourists.

After the Colosseum, pass by the Arch of Constantine to get to the Forum – which was definitely the most awe-inspiring part of our trip. Like stepping straight into 200AD, be sure to have comfortable shoes for the uneven cobbles and don’t bother with a guide – there are signs everywhere telling you what you’re looking at. This is an absolute must-visit, as it’s an extremely atmospheric place that really gives you a feel of what the city must have been like for the historical Romans.

Ruins

Palatine Hill and Circus Maximus is your next stop, but if you’re tired at this point and not majorly into history, this is where I’d advise you to duck out. An upward climb will give you incredible views, and the complex above is breathtaking in it’s enormity, but if you’re a little oversaturated at that point, cut your losses and go for a chill afternoon drink in the slightly pricey, but worth-it-for-the-views ‘Ristorante Martini & Rossini’, right across from the Colosseum to soak it all up.

Keep your afternoon and evening free then to crash a little after all your walking and touring and spend the evening wandering the beautiful streets of Rome as they come alive at night. Check out Navona square to see beautiful fountains and tourist-packed restaurants and then wander off the beaten track a little for dinner in the lovely Saltimbocca Ristorante, and drink gorgeous wine and eat super authentic Italian dishes – we recommend the prawn pasta. It was to die for.

Day Two

Man in Blue Waistcoat and White Dress Shirt Standing Near Pantheon

Day two is definitely lighter than day one, even though it looks like there’s a lot on your list with the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vicus Caprarius, and the Spanish steps on your morning list. But really, most of these aren’t full of lots of information, they’re just beautiful places you can spend a few minutes admiring, so it’s a bit of a whistle-stop tour of some of Rome’s most beautiful and hidden gems

If you’re coming from the west of the city, hit it up in the order above, if you’re coming from the east, reverse it. Again, try to come early as tourists will flock to some of these major sites. The Pantheon will always have queues and looks super impressive from the outside. The queues do move relatively quickly though and you’ll probably be in with 15-20 minutes. The inside is beautiful and church-like, but not the most exciting thing on the list.

Old fountain decorated with sculptures

Next up is Trevi, the big one. No matter what time of day you go to Trevi, it’s going to be busy, so be prepped for that and keep your hand on your bag/wallet as the crowds are easy to be pick-pocketed in. Toss in your coin to make a wish and snap a pic with the stunning and surprisingly massive fountain – it’s also beautiful at night if you happen to be passing that way!

Next up is Vicus Caprarius, which not many people have heard of but is a really cool underground kind of spot in Rome. It’s the source of the Trevi fountain so a mere street or two away from the bustling centre. A €4 ticket will take you under the streets of Rome and into the structure that shows you the history of the fountain and the city as you walk around ruins that have been there since before the fountain itself!

A Stairway On A Church Facade

Next up are the Spanish steps, which personally I found a little underwhelming, but there an iconic part of Rome so a must-see according to many. We went in the morning, but maybe this is a spot better hit up at night, where it’s known as a gathering spot for lots of young people.

In the afternoon, go across the iconic Pont Sant’Angelo to see Castel de Saint Angelo, a second century castle that houses an impressive military museum and cool viewing point up top. Full of stunning art and with a rich and long history, this is one I would recommend getting a tour for, as you have seven levels to get through.

Person Holding Bread With Cheese

Have a chill evening wine-bar hopping and trying all the best small plates and wine that Rome has to offer from Enoteca Il Piccolo to Astemio Wine and Food, a little out of the way, but a particular favourite with us.

Day Three

White Building and People Standing Near Water Fountain

Another intense day that’s very worth it for the culture and history, this is your Vatican day! Another one to get tickets for but not a tour, an audio guide is the perfect way to take the Vatican museum at your own pace. It involves several different routes as it’s truly massive, but that also means you can do as much or as little as you like. We definitely recommend checking out the Egyptian exhibition to see real mummies and incredible Egyptian artefacts as well as learning more about the relationship between the two ancient cultures. The Raphael Rooms and the gardens were also stunning. The end of the line and star of the show for most people is the Sistine Chapel, where no photos or noise is allowed.

After that, grab some gelato from Gelateria on Via di Porta Angelica to keep you going and head over to St Peter’s Square to soak up the views. If you have the time (and patience for queues) we heard the tour of the dome was incredible, but we hadn’t booked and didn’t want to wait for hours.

Old stone church with sculptures and columns against anonymous people at dusk in Vatican City Italy

After your super cultural morning, take your last afternoon and evening in Rome to relax in the Trastevere region, by far our favourite spot for food and drink. More relaxed and less touristy than over the river, here you’ll find culinary gems like Cambio, Enoteca Trastevere, Casetta di Trastevere and Tonnarella’s, almost all of which you’ll want to book ahead as they’re very popular for their super authentic and incredibly fresh food – seriously my mouth is watering just thinking about them right now.

People Sitting on Bench Near River

Take your time to wander the streets that are slightly more run down but definitely less busy and more authentic than the Municipio and enjoy your last night taking the sights, smells and tastes of Italy!

Another supermarket retailer has just announced that they have now lowered the cost of a loaf of bread.

SuperValu has confirmed that, from today, the cost of own-brand bread in their stores will be decreased by 10 cent.

This move follows a similar trend from fellow stores Tesco and Aldi, who recently announced the introduction of similar plans.

Earlier this morning, SuperValu stated that the price of its 800g Daily Basics own-brand bread would be lowered from €0.99c to €0.89c for a white pan.

Similarly, for a brown pan loaf from the same SuperValu brand, the price has been lowered from €1.09 to €0.99c.

Yesterday, supermarket chain Tesco confirmed that it would be reducing its bread prices by 10c, meaning that you can now purchase its own-brand white pan for 89c.

In Aldi stores nationwide, from today, the prices of the retailer’s own-brand sliced pans have been reduced by up to 10 cent.

This move by retailers has been sparked by the rising cost of living crisis, caused by high levels of inflation. The prices of butter and milk in supermarkets have also been cut in recent weeks, in an attempt to ease the pressure being placed on customers’ food bills.

Yesterday, the group Retail Forum met to discuss the ongoing price hikes and the reasons behind them.

Following the meeting of retailers and experts, Retail Ireland director Arnold Dillon explained that the talks had ended without a clear commitment to reduce prices.

In his statement after the group discussion, Mr Dillon noted that the members are “actively working to minimise the impact on consumers of massive EU-wide commodity price increases and this will continue.”
