Volunteer and father of Special Olympics athlete, Brian O’Callaghan, shares his thoughts prior to the departure.

According to the 2022 Census data, more than 700,000 people indicated that they undertook voluntary work, and of those, nearly 300,000 people volunteered in a sporting organisation.

The 2023 World Summer Games held in Berlin between 17th – 25th June are the largest inclusive sporting event in the world, featuring over 7,000 athletes from 190 nations. Team Ireland consists of 73 athletes competing in 12 sports, supported by a team of over 60 volunteers representing all five Special Olympics Ireland regions – Connaught, Eastern, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster.

Brian and Padraig O’Callaghan

Brian O’Callaghan is a Team Ireland volunteer and father of Special Olympics athlete, sat down with us to share his story.

How did you start volunteering with the SOI?

Brian: My journey with the Special Olympics started at the Ireland Games in Limerick in 2010, having just welcomed a son with Down Syndrome to the world. I made a pact with myself that, if the games ever came back to Limerick, I would get involved and volunteer.

Looking back now, maybe it was my way of coping and ensuring that my son, Padraig, was given every opportunity to be the best that he could be. Thankfully, the games did come back to Limerick 4 years later, and I fulfilled my own promise and got involved. I have been volunteering ever since and I feel very proud to be involved with the Special Olympics.

What motivated you to invest your time and energy in this and what is it that keeps you motivated to keep going?

Brian: Initially I got involved due to my son Padraig’s Down syndrome diagnosis. I wanted to remain as positive and upbeat as possible, overcoming the initial shock. Of course, now looking back, there was absolutely nothing to be worried about, but for me it was a way of challenging the condition and proving that it would not hinder Padraig in any way. I am a firm believer that everybody on this island should have the opportunity to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, regardless of ability or disability.

After seeing how Special Olympics Ireland changes lives, it was impossible for me to walk away. Also, I look at these athletes, their parents and coaches, and it gives me a snapshot into the future and the potential that Padraig can realise. Maybe it’s slightly selfish but I find it truly heart-warming and soul enriching and I take great pleasure in seeing that.

What does a typical day look like for you when you are at the games?

Brian: I am lucky to be part of the Media Volunteer Team at the World Games, and our role is to tell the story of the games from the athletes, their coaches and their families point of view. We meet, engage, celebrate and unfortunately commiserate with all athletes as they represent their country with pride. It’s our job to tell their story, and to update all the supporters at home and the media in attendance with schedules, results, unusual stories and much more.

Our day starts with a team briefing over breakfast to discuss sports, locations and medal hopefuls before heading to our allocated venue. We would then stay there for the day ensuring we garner as much exposure for Team Ireland as possible, before returning to base and debriefing later that evening. It’s a very busy, full-on role, but one I thoroughly enjoy.

The Berlin 2023 will be your 3rd games, can you tell us what is your very best memory from the games and what are you mostly looking forward to this year?

Brian: These games are all about the athletes. To represent you hometown, your county and your country at anything, be it sport or otherwise, irrespective of the level, is something that the athletes and their families can be immensely proud of. We go as volunteers to facilitate these experiences and support them in any way we can. These athletes have trained hard to be in peak condition when it counts, and they are competing to win.

My best memory comes from the World Games in Los Angeles in 2015, but it didn’t involve an Irish athlete. It was on the running track at UCLA and a 100m sprint. Halfway down the straight, a young American girl tripped and fell over. What happened next blew me away as a fellow athlete stopped mid race, helped her up and the two of them crossed the line together arm in arm as all the other athletes applauded them. It struck me right then that there is an honesty and integrity about the Special Olympics World games, unmatched in any other sport or event that I have ever experienced.

How important is the support of the sponsors and the community for the volunteers and athletes?

Brian: Special Olympics Ireland changes lives, and I truly believe that. I’ve seen first-hand the difference it makes in people’s lives, how it allows people to develop and integrate into society without any fear or prejudice. The corporate governance principles are very evident with Special Olympics Ireland and this is why the corporate partnerships and sponsorships are some of the longest of their type in the world.

20 years on from Ireland 2003 – how has the attitude and support towards the SO Games changed? What is your message to everyone reading this?

Brian: There’s no doubt that the legacy left in Ireland and indeed around the world after the 2003 games has been hugely beneficial to the organisation here. When attending World Games, I meet many former participants and volunteers and they still rate Dublin 2003 as one of the best games ever. Whether this event spurred society at large into an attitude change or not is debatable, but we’ve certainly seen a shift in attitude over the past 20 years. Inclusion and diversity are at the forefront of corporate CSR initiatives, the challenge is in ensuring it is not just a box ticking exercise, and they are genuinely interested in pursuing it.

The Special Olympics code states: ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ This is obviously relevant to a sporting organisation, but its connotations spread far beyond the sports fields and have relevance in everyday life. A win for one person may be a gold medal, for another it may be finding a job or passing an exam. My message to everybody reading this is to open your eyes and your minds, treat everybody on their abilities not on their diagnosis and remember that disability does not mean inability.

eir’s partnership with the Special Olympics Ireland since 1985 is the longest running charity partnership in Ireland. This year, eir have once again shown their support for Special Olympics Ireland and their volunteers who will be travelling to support Team Ireland at the World Summer Games this June, by sponsoring the official volunteer kit and ensuring the Special Olympics Ireland team stay connected as they travel.

Take a step back in time this summer with the stunning Doneraile Park & Gardens, located on the banks of the Awbeg River in north Co. Cork.  The estate, which is now the fifth most popular free tourist destination in Ireland, continues to enthral visitors with its magnificent building and picturesque grounds.

Following a successful series last year, Ballyhoura Country is delighted to announce the return of the special guided tours of OPW’s Doneraile Park & Gardens for the 2023 season.  Experience a unique and memorable event filled with pageantry, history and storytelling that is truly one of a kind.

Set amidst the majestic surroundings of Doneraile Estate, the guided tours will bring visitors on a journey back in time through the estate’s history.  Led by a knowledgeable team of volunteered and trained Doneraile Local Tour Guides, the tours feature incredibly talented members of the Doneraile Drama Society, who will narrate some of the Estate’s history in authentic period costumes.  They will bring to life many of the most memorable characters from the estate’s history, including Edmund Spenser, Queen Elizabeth I, and Elizabeth St Leger, The Lady Freemason.

Visitors will also get exclusive access to the private Doneraile Estate Pleasure Grounds, Parterre and walled gardens as part of the experience; access that has been provided with the kind permission of OPW.

The tours tell the story of the Doneraile estate in an entertaining and engaging way, combining historical moments with entertaining anecdotes about the area’s well-known residents.  It explains how King Henry VIII first brought Sir Anthony St Leger (grandfather to William St Leger, who built Doneraile Court in the 1720s and the first Viscount Doneraile) to Ireland in the 16th century.

One of the area’s most well-known residents was the Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser who lived at Kilcolman Castle near Doneraile and immortalised the nearby river Awbeg in his poem The Faerie Queene.

Elizabeth St Leger, William’s daughter, tells of overhearing a masonic lodge meeting at Doneraile Court in the early 18th century, and the consequences she experienced from this encounter.  One wonders what she might have heard!

“As a dedicated volunteer guide for the past 12 years, it brings me immense joy to lead visitors through 400 years of gardening history within this remarkable estate.  The tour is enriched by the presence of historical characters associated with Doneraile, creating a magnificent blend of theoretical pageantry”, says Myra Ryall, Doneraile Local Guide and Owner of the Townhouse Café in Doneraile.

Paul and Jo Ryan from Mallow, Co. Cork were among the guests to enjoy the opening event of this year’s series, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, saying: “We love a long walk through Doneraile Park and for us there are not too many places that offer such beauty and variety in one location.  Last week we decided to take a guided tour of the gardens and it was definitely worth it, it’s one of those experiences where you ask yourself why didn’t I do this sooner. Our tour guide Willie was passionate about the history of the place which added to the whole experience.  We loved the way he would add in loads of extra little bits of historical information.

“It was a brilliant bonus to meet some historical figures such as King Henry VIII as we strolled through the garden.  These characters, played by the local theatre company, interacted with us at various stages throughout the tour.  We were also given access to parts of the gardens that are not normally open to the public, all part of Doneraile Court’s hidden history.  I have always been curious about a mural of a garden at the entrance to the local church, and now I know where this beautiful looking garden was originally located.  It is a credit to the people of Doneraile and the OPW to put on such a unique tour and to the way Doneraile Court and grounds are maintained.”

The Guided Tours can be booked via Eventbrite here.

The first guided tour of the season took place on Sunday 4th June and was completely sold out.  Upcoming tour dates are:

  • Sunday 9th July
  • Sunday 6th August
  • Sunday 3rd September
  • Sunday 8th October

Doneraile Court, the centrepiece of this beautiful estate, has once again re-opened its doors, and guided tours of the house, including the stunning refurbishment of the second floor, are now available.  The OPW has also partnered with Crawford Art Gallery to share some significant works from the Gallery’s collection exclusively at Doneraile.

Guided tours of the Doneraile Court are available from Wednesdays to Sundays (including Bank Holidays) from 10am – 4pm.  Email donerailecourt@opw.ie for details.

Doneraile Court will also play host to an amazing line-up of music and cultural events this season, with a programme of talks and concerts taking place between June and October.  Tickets are available here.

Maya Vander has opened up about life since welcoming the birth of her daughter after experiencing a baby loss.

The Selling Sunset star revealed she had given birth to her baby girl, Emma Reign, last month after going through a tragic pregnancy loss at 38 weeks in 2021.

Now, Maya has shared details from her pregnancy with baby Emma and reflected on the loss of her son, Mason, in 2021.

Credit: Maya Vander Instagram

Speaking to People, the 41-year-old admitted, “I didn't know how this pregnancy would go and things obviously happen, I learned, unfortunately”.

“I decided to just keep it quiet mostly, I didn't want to do just anything and I wanted to just make sure everything is going well and the baby's healthy and the delivery is healthy and everything is fine before going public about it all”.

“It was just the right decision for me at the time. This pregnancy, in particular, because of my late loss last year, it was a bit more – I wouldn't call it anxiety because I'm a pretty relaxed person – I was just a little more cautious and worried because I learned that you can lose a baby, no matter how far along you are, even if things are going the way they should be”.

The real estate agent continued, “I did everything I could, the doctors did everything they could, to make sure we're not going to have any problems again. It was helpful, having more checkups and so on”.

Credit: Maya Vander Instagram

“People also joke to me that, ‘Maya is always pregnant’, but I say I'm 41 years old. I was pregnant technically seven times between miscarriages and unfortunately the stillbirth, which is really the next level of a loss, and I have three kids to show for it”.

She contiuned, “I knew that once I lost my son that I wanted to get pregnant as soon as I can. People think it's crazy but again, it's really easy to judge from the outside”.

“When I lost my son Mason I was mentally prepared to have three kids, and it was very difficult for me to just let go of that. I could have said, ‘I have a boy and a girl. They're healthy and happy. Let me just move on and forget about it’”.

Vander then spoke more about knowing she wanted to have another child, despite what others thought.

“I had a huge voice that I think unless you experience something like that it's very hard to explain because most people will say you’re lucky and just leave it, be okay with what you have. But it's very hard to move on after you lost the baby, so late in pregnancy. Something was really missing”.

Credit: Maya Vander Instagram

“It was a big hole in my heart, which I still have that hole but I feel like with my third baby now, I just have a better experience in the hospital, a better ending and I'm happy. I wanted three kids and now it's completed, and I'm very thankful”.

Maya went on to talk about her other children whom she shares with husband David Miller- four-year-old Aiden and three-year-old Elle.

“My kids keep me super busy. They don't understand what happened with the loss last year. We talk about my son all the time, but they don't understand because they're only three and four years old”.

“In a crazy way, if I knew for a fact that I'm not gonna have another miscarriage, or God forbid, stillbirth and I was younger, maybe I would even go for a fourth, which I never imagined in my life I would say that. It's just nice to cuddle with her while she's so little. I really feel like she's my miracle baby”.

“I cannot wait”, she added excitedly before sharing more of an insight into the moniker.

Frankie Essex has confessed that she recently had a health scare with her baby daughter.

The former star of The Only Way Is Essex became a mum for the first time in May of last year. Frankie and her partner Luke Love welcomed twins into the world – a son named Logan and a daughter named Luella.

Since the birth of her twins, Frankie has occasionally shared updates with her fans on how she has been coping with motherhood, as well as any developments that the twins have had.

Now, in her latest OK! column, the 35-year-old has revealed that she had a terrifying panic over baby Luella’s health.

Frankie’s worry initially arose when she discovered a ‘lump’ on her daughter’s head.

“It was where her soft spot was and it felt a bit risen. I took her to the GP to get her checked over, and I asked the GP 'do you recommend a scan?' and she said 'well not really because of the radiation' but they could ultrasound it. I was happy to pay for private but I needed a referral,” Frankie explained.

The reality star continued by detailing when Luella was finally able to be tested. “So on Monday morning, we took her to the private hospital as I'd got the referral and everything and they scanned her head with an ultrasound and everything was fine,” she recalled.

“What they said was it's where the soft spot is, her skull's fused together and it's just created a little bump and it might go, it might not, but there's 100% confirmation it's nothing to worry about,” Frankie insisted.

Although she had a positive outcome in the end, the new mum-of-two expressed that it was a terrifying experience for her to go through.

“When I came out of there and got to the car I just burst into tears, I think it was all the emotional build-up from the night before worrying, obviously, you just start thinking of the worst-case scenario,” Frankie concluded.
