At the height of One Direction's fame, Louis Tomlinson appeared to be positively brimming over with confidence, but during a recent interview with The Observer, the Doncaster-native suggests that he was from from content with his position in the band.

In perhaps one of his most candid interviews to date, the 25-year-old revealed that he harboured massive insecurities – something which was exacerbated by his tendency to compare himself to fellow band members.

Reflecting on their initial performances as a five-piece, Louis said: "You know I didn’t sing a single solo on the X Factor. A lot of people can take the p*ss out of that."

Admitting that he regularly questioned his place in the band, Louis recalls thinking: "What have I really done to contribute here? Sing a lower harmony that you can’t really hear in the mix?"

"The others have always been… Like Niall, for example. He’s the most lovely guy in the world," Louis said. "Happy-go-lucky Irish, no sense of arrogance. And he’s fearless. There are times I’ve thought: “I’d have a bit of that."

Opening up about the relationship he shared with Zayn, Louis explained that he sought comfort in him, saying: "He could relate to me on a nerves level."

"In the first year we were both the least confident. But Zayn has a fantastic voice and for him it was always about owning that."

Turning his attention to Liam and Harry, Louis paid tribute to their showmanship and their ability to work an audience – traits he envied.

"Liam always had a good stage presence, same as Harry, they’ve both got that ownership. Harry comes across very cool. Liam’s all about getting the crowd going, doing a bit of dancing.. and then there's me." he said.

By comparing himself to his bandmates, Louis admitted that he often felt out of his depth and presumed that the public simply saw him as "the kid wearing espadrilles, stood in the back."

And to think we always considered him one of the most confident members…

Well, hello there Eminem.

We all know Eminem as the rapper with the peroxide blonde hair, having only sometimes ventured back to his natural roots.

Just a couple of guys from Compton and one from Detroit. With a beard. #thedefiantones

However, a new picture of Em was shared over the weekend, and he's sporting a beard.

A very hot beard, we might add.

Not everyone agrees with us though, and many have shared their mixed reactions on Twitter:

We've all had to watch our friends endure difficult times. Whether it's due to a family bereavement, relationship issue, work concern or any other myriad of problems one might encounter, seeing your friend flounder is never easy.

As friends, we often find ourselves considering the role we might play in their happiness, and while we want to do our utmost to support them, it can be difficult to gauge how far we should go to pull them out of their slump.

Most things are a learning process and most people need to establish their own coping mechanisms in certain situations, so who are we to bulldoze in with countless 'remedies' or solutions' they may not even want?

There are, however, ways to support your friend during a bad patch without encroaching too much, and here are just six.

Be patient

Some people are less likely than others to talk about their problems, but that doesn't meant they don't want to.

Whether it's fear of judgement, concern over an inability to properly articulate themselves or a reluctance to disclose too much, your friend may need more time than others to open up.

Assure her that there is no pressure on her to open up, but that you will be there for her when she decides to share her concerns.

Acknowledge that it's hard to discuss some issues, and remind her that she can tell you as little or as much as she'd like, but your main goal is to help.

Be present

If you have a friend who trusts you enough to reveal the extent of their worries, then you better make it your business to be present.

Scrolling through your phone while she voices her concerns or trying to change the subject when the topic gets too heavy is hugely disrespectful, and while you might find it difficult to see your friend in distress, your role is to support her, not shy away from her.

Be inquisitive

Checking in on your friend regularly and asking after her wellbeing is so important if you have a mate going through a hard time.

Knowing that someone is thinking of you is incredibly heartening when you're struggling, so by sending that quick text or leaving that funny voice message you are lifting your friend's spirits in ways you might not even realise.

And when it comes to face-to-face exchanges; don't leave it up to her to mention her current situation, ask how she's doing, tell her you're more than happy to listen, but there's no pressure either way.

Distract her

We've all experienced times when we've talked ourselves in circles with a friend over a concern we're having, and ultimately got to the point where we needed something – anything – to distract us.

Choose your time to distract her wisely, because you don't want to be seen as insensitive. In other words, don't decided to distract her when she's in the middle of pouring her heart out, but instead choose an afternoon where you're going to take her mind off her worries with a fun activity.

Gather together flour, sugar, eggs, Avonmore Super Milk, butter and chocolate chips, and arrive at her door unannounced for an afternoon of baking with her bestie.

Draw on past memories

It's likely you may have navigated a similar struggle of your own at some point, and can draw on your own experience to help your friend.

While this is undoubtedly a positive in your eyes, it's important to bide your time when it comes to doling out advice.

When she's in the height of her upset, she may not be able to see the parallels between your past situation and her current one, so ask her if she'd like to hear what you did when you faced similar struggles.

And don't be offended if she initially brushes off your advice, sometimes a little perspective is all she needs, and that will come.

Decide on some time-off

Look, we all know that being supportive is the cardinal rule of friendship. but that should never be to your own detriment.

You can't help your friend if you're emotionally drained and carrying the weight of her problems on your shoulders all the time, so allow yourself some time-off by dedicating yourself to me-time every couple of days.

Needing to recharge doesn't make you a bad friend, but simply indicates that you know the importance of your own mental strength.

There's nothing better than trying out a new place right in the heart of the city.

With hotels like The Dean, The Morgan and The Gibson, you'd think we'd be spoilt for choice; but not so, as a new hotel is about to begin construction.

Pub chain, JD Wetherspoon, is opening a hotel in the heart of the city centre.

The hotel will open on Camden Street and the company has just announced that it will open in early 2019.

The chain is set to start construction in February 2018, and when built, it will create 200 new jobs.

JD Wetherspoon bought the Camden Hall Hostel site at the beginning of this year, and planning permission was granted by Dublin City Council in April.

The investment cost the business €15m, but with the site being on one of the busiest nightclub spots in the city, we can see it making a good birra dosh.

A community in Carlow have expressed their shock over the discovery of an injured woman on the grounds of the Pollerton Castle in Co Carlow yesterday.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, was unconscious when a passerby happened upon her and was subsequently transferred to St Luke's Hospital in Co Kilkenny.

Speaking to the Irish Independent in the hours following his discovery, the man said: "We're all very shocked here. I was told not to comment on what I had seen, but I just hope that this woman is OK."

Echoing these sentiments, local councillor Jim Deane reiterated the community's shock and expressed his concern for the woman's welfare.

"Many people around the town are talking about this awful incident," he said.

"Whatever the circumstances are it's truly a horrific thing to have happened. I hope this poor, unfortunate girl who is the victim of this assault makes a speedy recovery," he added.

As a technical examination of the scene is conducted, Gardaí have asked members of the public to come forward if they were in the vicinity of Staplestown Road, St Patricks Avenue or Pollerton Road between 2am and 5am yesterday.

Issuing an appeal, a spokespeson said: "Gardaí are appealing to any drivers of vehicles that may have travelled these roads between the above times and have footage from dashcams to contact them at Carlow garda station on 059-9136620, The garda confidential telephone line 1800 666 111 or any garda station."

It is understood that the woman is currently in a serious condition.

Ah, the joys of making your first Holy Communion.

Along with the glitz and glamour (and praying), Holy Communions work out to be a pretty plentiful time for primary school kids, with some children scoring up to €570 on the day.

Ulster Bank released a breakdown of how much an Irish child is given on their special day, and well, the numbers might shock you.

The bank’s survey, which was carried out by Empathy Research, found some pretty hefty figures:

  • Children receive an average of €570 in cash on the day
  • 1 in 4 children receive more than €800
  • 13 per cent receive more than €1000
  • Parents spend an average of €845 on the occasion

It also found that male children are more likely to get more money, with the average received by boys this year being €591, compared to girls getting an average of €550.

However, there has been a steep drop in the amount of money parents spend on outfits, make-up and hair for the day.

Saying that, parents still went slightly over budget than they did last year.

  • Party/ celebrations/ food and drink: €388 (+5 per cent on 2016)
  • Child’s outfit for the day: €185 (+5 per cent on 2016)
  • Outfits for other family members: €153 (-27 per cent on 2016)
  • Children’s entertainment: €78 (-48 per cent on 2016)
  • Make-up/ hair (girls only): €41 (-27 per cent on 2016)

92 per cent of parents pay for everything out of their own savings, while half surveyed agreed that the pressure is there to spend as much as other parents have.

Most of the kids’ Communion money was spent on toys (42 per cent) and clothes (31 per cent).

Many Irish parents have turned to DarcyBow for stunning and unique handmade communion dress – they are the type of dresses that will be handed down for many years to come.

A whopping 64 per cent of houses still need to begin construction, bringing the number to nearly 24,000.

In the Dublin City Council area, no work has been started on 77 per cent of the homes, while in Fingal and South Dublin, nothing has begun on two thirds of the homes.
