Yearly Archives: 2017

Let's be honest, the workplace is always made more bearable when you have a work wife to call your own.

Knowing you have a person who can cheer you up and cheer you on when your workload is bringing you out in hives and you've become positively allergic to your boss is one of life's greatest gifts.

No matter what the working day throws at you, you can be fairly certain that there will be moments of pure joy when your inbox pings with a meme-filled mail from your mate or your quick dash to the watercooler results in a full-on belly laugh.

And given the closeness of your bond, and the sheer amount of time you spend with this person, there are certain things that only she knows about you.

And here are just 13.

1. The sheer number of things that will set your teeth on edge.

While your friends and family might assume you're pretty laidback, your work wife knows that anything from a co-worker's laugh to the squeak of the office dishwasher will be enough to send you completely over the edge.

"Why does she have to let the entire office know she finds something funny? We get it, you're having an absolute ball over there."

2. How you take your tea.

Your work wife is totally entitled to step in when she sees a co-worker mere moments away from messing up your tea order.

"No no, no, she needs it the colour of a brown envelope, and she only uses Avonmore Super Milk. Look, just give it to me."

3. The embarrassing thing you did on your first day.

Whether it was the fact you forgot the boss's name or chose to microwave fish in the communal kitchen, it's fairly likely your work wife will have either seen it or heard about it.

And she generally rolls it out when you need reminding that your day isn't going as badly as your first one did.

"Remember the hack of the shoes you wore on your first day? And remember the way you left the price tag on the sole?"

4. Your office cry-face.

Obviously your friends and family will have seen you cry countless times in your life, but most of us have a particular cry we reserve for the office bathroom when we don't want anyone to know we're in meltdown mode, and your work wife can sense it coming a mile off.

"Get yourself down to that bathroom, and I'll be down in two with my makeup bag."

5. Your 'office voice'.

When it comes to communicating with difficult co-workers, most of us tend to subconsciously adopt a tone of voice which we reserve for them, and them only.

And your work wife generally wastes no times finding out what went down.

"What was your one saying to you? I heard you do the voice, but I couldn't get close enough to hear her."

6. The parts of your job that flummox you.

While you may have told your boss you're a dab hand at Excel, your work wife knows you've never completed a single Excel task without the help of at least 15 other people.

"Look, don't worry. I'll volunteer for the Excel task, and you can do the one I was going for."

7. Your burning need for the goss.

Your work wife knows you're the first person she needs to speak to the minute some seriously juicy office gossip lands.

"Meet me at the kettle in two, and set your face to stun."

8. You only use a particular bathroom stall.

When you spend that amount of time with someone, conversations about bodily functions become commonplace, and you know she wouldn't bat an eyelid over a toiler-related horror story.

"So I thought I was on my own in there, but I wasn't, and now I can never look her in the eye again."

9. The mistake that still haunts you.

We've all majorly effed-up in work at some point, and no one knows the hell you've endured as a result of that mistake more than your work wife.

Much like the bizarre impression you made on your first day, she uses this particular example as a reminder that things can always get worse.

"I know it seems awful now, but remember when you hit 'reply all' in that email?"

10. How you spend your office down-time.

Everyone has a way of decompressing at certain points during the day, and your work wife knows yours as well as she knows her own.

"Go check your mail. I sent you a link to a page dedicated to animals wearing hats. Enjoy."

11. She knows better than to ask you how your weekend was.

And that's not because you already debriefed her on it amid your weekly 'Sunday Night Fear' text series, but because she knows it will only encourage other co-workers to ask you.

"Don't go into the kitchen. Helen from Finance is demanding to know what everyone got up to on Saturday night."

12. Your disdain for the co-worker that everyone adores.

You tried to like this person because God knows it would make your day so much easier, but you cant force it, and only your work wife knows how much grief it causes you.

"Heads-up. Everyone is heading over to Claire's desk for the daily worshipping ritual, so why don't you run along to the bathroom, and I'll follow in 30 seconds?"

13. The type of pep talk that actually works.

While some people need to be reminded of their skill and talent prior to a big meeting, your work wife knows all you need to hear is that there will be coffee and a brownie on your desk when you come out of it.

"Thirty minutes from now and that brownie is yours, girl."

As the music industry attempts to come to terms with the tragic passing of Linkin Park frontman, Chester Bennington, social media users have condemned Korn guitarist for suggesting Chester's death was a sign of cowardice.

In a Facebook post he shared last night, Brian Welch wrote: "Honestly, Chester’s an old friend who we’ve hung with many times, and I have friends who are extremely close to him, but this is truly pissing me off! How can these guys send this message to their kids and fans?!"

In a move which has stunned fans and followers, Brian went on to claim that Chester's decision to take his own life was born of cowardice.

‘I’m sick of this suicide shit! I’ve battled depression/mental illness, and I’m trying to be sempethetic, but it’s hard when you’re pissed!" (sic)

"Enough is enough! Giving up on your kids, fans, and life is the cowardly way out!!!"

Perhaps realising that his opinion may be met with condemnation, he added: "I’m sorry, I know meds and/or alcohol may have been involved, I’m just processing like all of us and I know we are all having some of the same thoughts/feelings."

However, Brian's attempt at justifying his remark wasn't enough to placate understandably upset members of the public.

"That's like saying you've battled cancer and that people who die of cancer are weak," countered one follower. "Some people have it worse than others . Doesn't make you weak or a coward."

"I have lost whatever respect i had for you," wrote another. "Do you really think this is something he would have wanted if he thought there was another option?"

"If you've battled depression and/or mental illness you should realise suicide is not cowardly or selfish, it's an act out of desperation," added another.

"Use your fame and celebrity to encourage anyone considering suicide to seek help, and not as a platform to be ignorant and condescending."

Following the backlash, Brian returned to Facebook to clarify his thought process.

"I didn’t mean to sound insensitive about Chester," he wrote. "Just dealing with a range of emotions today. Love you Chester."

"I’m pissed that you did this, but I know this could have been me back in the day after getting wasted one night," he added.

Despite the backlash, Brian's initial post amassed a staggering 36,000 likes on Facebook.

Justin Bieber has now joined Lady Gaga and Oasis on a list of artists who are banned from touring in China.

The Canadian popstar, whose questionable behaviour has made as many headlines as his hits, became the subject of scrutiny in recent days when a fan contacted the Beijing Municipal Bereau of Culture asking why her idol hadn't visited the country in recent years.

Responding to the enquiry, the ministry made their stance on the Sorry singer clear, but allowed for a change in stance should future behaviour allow.

"Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but he is also a controversial young foreign singer," the bureau told the fan in a statement.

"In order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers."

"We hope that as Justin Bieber matures, he can continue to improve his own words and actions, and truly become a singer beloved by the public."

The ministry did not elaborate on what they constitute as 'bad behaviour', but the 23-year-old has had several run-ins with the law, dating back to 2013.

From reckless driving and driving under the influence to vandalism and resisting arrest, the singer's reputation has been marred by a number of incidents of antisocial behaviour.

A 24-year-old man was due to appear before the Dublin District Court this morning in connection with the alleged rape and false imprisonment of an 18-year-old Spanish student last weekend.

The individual, who was arrested on Monday afternoon, was held for questioning at the Irishtown Garda Station until Tuesday afternoon.

The alleged victim claimed she met the man in the city centre over the weekend and agreed to travel to Sandymount with him in order to take photographs.

She then claims he forced her into a tent in a remote area of Rinsend where he repeatedly raped her over the course of two days before she managed to escape and raise the alarm.

It is understood that the 24-year-old suspect was on bail for another offence at the time of the alleged attack last weekend.

The 18-year-old woman was taken to hospital and received a medical examination. Her family have travelled from Spain to be with her at this time.

In an emotional interview with The Sun, Louis Tomlinson has opened up about a sentimental exchange which took place between himself and his late mother in the weeks leading up to her untimely passing.

Speaking to Dan Wootton, Louis revealed that 43-year-old Johannah, who died after a battle with leukaemia, urged her son to make peace with his former bandmate, Zayn Malik.

Giving an insight into the conversation which took place, Louis explained: "My mum said, ‘You’ve got to get back in contact with Zayn. Life’s too f***ing short’."

“A mother’s intuition is just f***ing crazy. It always felt supernatural to me. My mum always knew what I was feeling and what I wanted," he added.

Explaining why his mother's words resonated with him, he continued: "I can’t stand to hold a grudge with anyone. It doesn’t sit with me right."

"Zayn was always good for me in the band because he was my go-to if I wanted to p**s around, lark around. I could always break the rules a little bit with Zayn."

Johannah encouraged her son to build bridges in the aftermath of Zayn's shock decision to leave the band in 2015, with Louis saying: "If there is any animosity, just clear the air. I met up with him and it was nice.”

Louis, who hadn't spoken to Zayn for a year following his unexpected departure, insisted that he felt conflicted at the time.

"I would always see the good in Zayn and also watch him shoot himself in the foot with some of his decisions, but he’s just a little misunderstood.”

Following their reconciliation, Louis is able to see the strength of the bond they shared during their time in One Direction.

“So after that whole thing, it was that brotherly love. We will always have that love for each other. I can’t speak on behalf of him but we really care about each other."

And it comes courtesy of POTUS Donald Trump. Well, kind of.

And frankly, it is nothing short of magnificent.

But enough out of us, let’s hear what Donald has to say for himself.

Talented stylist and mother of two, Eimear Varian Barry, is the kind of girl we wish we could count as a friend.

Her perfectly curated Instagram account made us follow her, but it is her funny, pretty and authentic daily Insta stories that really got us addicted.

And now the Cork-native speaks to SHEmazing about her eating habits and what she loves to cook for her family and friends.

What is your typical weekday breakfast?

My go-to breakfast is 3 hard boiled eggs and a small avocado or Flahavan's organic porridge.

What about lunch?

I usually have a French baguette with vintage cheese and Ballymaloe relish and spinach, or leftover dinner from the night before! I love mozzarella on sourdough with balsamic and basil too.

What do you usually have for dinner?

I LOVE cooking dinners. I'm not the best chef, but I still love cooking. I'll do all the basics like spag bol, shepherds pie, lasagna.

I love making beef stew and having it with fresh bread and Kerrygold butter!

Is it different at the weekend?

Yeah – I always get an Indian or Thai on a Friday night.

Saturday I'm usually in London working, so will dine out and Sunday is usually a roast.

Do you snack during the day?

I love fruit and veg as a snack and anything cheese-related! Brie on an oat cracker with honey on top is so good.

Also sugar snaps, bananas, blueberries, carrots and hummus are always in my fridge!

What would be your ideal food day?

I love the avocado on toast in Bill's for breakfast, or the fresh pastry basket at Berners Tavern at the London Edition.

The Riding House Cafe has amazing food (big, rich portions).

Dishoom's lamb chefs special for dinner and Jamie's Italian for dessert!

The one food you could have everyday for the rest of your life?

Thai food!

What is your favourite dessert?

Cheesecake, biscuit base, not baked.

What is your favourite meal of the day?

Dinner! I love being hungry for a massive feed! Haha!

I just love the art of dining. And having the family eat at the table is really important to me.

Your favourite restaurant in Dublin/Ireland/the world?

I was just in Berlin and was blown away by House of Small Wonder.

I'm also obsessed with all of Jamie Oliver's restaurants.

The best brunch place in Dublin?

Definitely The Pepper Pot! I love Industry & Co for sweet bites and coffee.

What food would you not eat for the whole world?

Don't think I'd ever be into Asian street food…frogs and all that..

What can we always find in your fridge?

I always have bottles of water, organic Yeo Valley milk, organic cheese, brie (the good stuff) , Kerrygold butter, Ballymaloe relish, mayo, strong mustard, cherry tomatoes, organic Greek yoghurt, organic beef, basil, coriander, spinach, broccoli, hummus.

This is quite boring actually!

You have friends over for dinner, what do you cook for them?

I love doing big pies that you can just dig in and dish up . Like, cannelloni or lasagna or chicken pot pie.

Do you find it hard to eat a healthy diet on a daily basis?

No, not at all. I'm not an obsessive healthy eater, but in general I eat good, wholesome healthy food.

I wouldn't touch crisps, fizzy drinks or deep fried food.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Those little butter biscuits you get with your coffee. They sell them now in Tesco and I'm obsessed!!

Brunch today here in frosty Surrey.

What is you go-to drink/cocktail in a bar/pub?

I rarely drink, but when I do, it would be a lager. Even the smell of ale gives me a headache.

Sometimes I have red wine in the winter.

Cocktail wise, I like an Amaretto Sour or a Tom Collins.
