We have been longing for a third instalment in The Princess Diaries franchise forever and it looks like our dreams are about to come true.

Rumour has it we’ll be reunited with Mia, Queen Clarisse Renaldi and of course, Fat Louie very soon.

Anne Hathaway opened up about the third movie during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and it sounds like she’s even more excited about the third Princess Diaries movie than we are.

The actress revealed that a script has been written for the third film: “There is a script. I wanna do it, Julie wants to do it… we all really want it to happen."

However, Anne said they won’t be releasing the movie unless they’re 100 percent happy with it. They understand that the characters and story mean the world to fans.

“We don't wanna do it unless it's perfect because we love it as much as you guys love it,” she explained.

"It's as important to us as it is to you and we don't wanna deliver anything until it's ready but were working on it,” the One Day actress added.

Rumours about The Princess Diaries 3 first started circulating in 2016 when director Gary Marshall said they wanted to wait until Anne had given birth to her son Jonathan before thinking about the movie.

He commented: “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan," said the director of the original films. Anne is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we're going to do it."

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since Anne Hathaway first played Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries.

And while the film’s anniversary has left us feeling both nicely nostalgic and bloody ancient, it seems to have given its lead some grateful feels.

Yesterday the 33-year-old actress took to Instagram to mark the occasion with a dancing Princess Mia gif and a few heartfelt words.

She wrote: “It’s been 15 years (say it with me) SHUT UP!!!!!!  To all the fans who loved Mia, Louie, Lily, Joe, Michael and, of course, Queen Clarisse, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Anne continued her message by paying tribute to the film’s director Garry Marshall who died last month at the age of 81.

The star said: “And to Garry Marshall, thank you for making me a princess.  I love you always my beloved friend and teacher, and I miss you every day xx.”

The Alice in Wonderland star made her film debut in The Princess Diaries in 2001.  Three years later she reprised her role as Mia for the The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Earlier this year it was rumoured that a third movie could be added to the series, but as of yet no progress seems to have been made on that front so for now we'll just have to wait with fingers crossed.

That’s right! Our favourite frizzy-haired princess is reportedly going to be back for a third instalment of The Princess Diaries.

Anne Hathaway is to reprise the role that made her a star in the 2001 film, according to Tracking Board.

While Disney has yet to officially announce the project, it has been reported that Debra Chase, who produced the first two films, is back to direct the third film.

Although it indeed looks as if Ms Hathaway will be back as Mia Thermopolis, there is no word as to whether Dame Julie Andrews will be returning to play our favourite royal grandmother just yet.

The films are based on the books by Meg Cabot, who recently released the latest installment of her series, Princess Diaries XI: Royal Wedding.

Let’s hope that this is just another tell-tale sign that the movie is actually happening!
