We can hardly believe it: but the sophisticated, styled and oh-so shiny Taylor Swift of 2015 was not always so.

Indeed, less than a decade ago, she was a cowboy hat-wearing and leather boot-donning all-Southern gal who evidently had no knowledge of GHDs or S&M harnesses.

But on this day nine years ago, a then 16-year-old Tay-Tay began out on her road to superstardom – namely by releasing her debut single, Tim McGraw.

Not that she was a newbie to the industry; she wrote her first song at the age of 12; by 14 she had a manager, and aged 15 she was playing her own music in cafes and bars.

Tim McGraw became an instant hit: selling 2m copies and even creeping into the mainstream Billboard Top 40 – quite the achievement for a Country tune.

These days, of course, Ms Swift is arguably the biggest pop-star on the planet (she's left behind her Country roots too), and she's already won at the age of 25 no fewer than seven Grammys.

Last year's album (her fifth), 1984, was a massive hit. And its singles, Shake It Off, Blank Space, and Bad Blood all made it to No.1 in the US.

She also has her cats, she has a gorgeous new man in the form of Calvin Harris – and she clearly has a bright future.

Here's to the next nine years, Taylor Swift.

Lady Gaga is known for her outrageous style, remember that time she wore the meat dress?

It’s also kind of hard to forget that time showed up in Paris literally dressed as a star.

Last week though, the pop powerhouse was at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Baku European Games in an unusually understated white flowing long-sleeved gown.

For all her usual outrageous antics and wacky onstage behaviour, it was her incredible vocals that were most on display as she covered John Lennon’s Imagine. From behind her piano covered in a blanket of flowers the ARTPOP singer delivered an incredibly powerful performance.

It’s been a while since she treated us all to a display of her impressive vocal range, and yes, it really is impressive. She moved the jam-packed stadium of sports fans to absolute awe as she put everything into the performance, especially that second verse.

The video has only now appeared on YouTube for us all to witness her musical prowess. It will give you chills, seriously.

Earlier this month, Gaga was in Britain to perform with Tony Bennett at the Royal Albert Hall in London but unfortunately had to cancel. The pair have confirmed they won’t be rescheduling because of their other commitments.

Still, Lady Gaga will be back in our lives next year as she’s set to star in Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated American Horror Story: Hotel. We can’t imagine someone more perfect for the brilliantly creeping series.

The growing cast also includes Kathy Bates, Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson and Chloe Sevigny.

Just when we thought Ed Sheeran couldn’t get any more perfect, he has. Warning, serious feelings ahead!

On Monday night in New York City the singer, 24, opened up about coping with his stutter as a youngster and how none other than rapper Eminem helped him overcome the issue.

At an American Institute For Stuttering benefit gala, Ed said his stutter was a result of a procedure he underwent to help clear a birthmark from his face.

He said that despite trying speech therapy and homeopathy, it was rap music that helped the most. He recalls that “my Uncle Jim told my dad that Eminem was the next Bob Dylan — it’s pretty similar, it’s all just storytelling — so my dad bought me The Marshall Mathers LP when I was nine years old, not knowing what was on it.”

Ed learned every word on the album even though Eminem raps at a ridiculously fast pace. And says that it was what really helped him to cope with his stutter.

The singer is now calling on all youngsters to embrace their “weirdness”. He pointed out that "most of the people I knew that were normal in school are all pretty dull right now — they go to the gym four times a week and look at themselves in the mirror a lot, but they don't really have a lot to say.”

Alongside Emily Blunt, the successful singer (and Taylor Swift's BFF), wanted young people to know that it’s totally cool to be very uncool and said that “having things that make you different help you become an interesting person.”

While in school Sheeran was labelled a weirdo but that he didn't let it bother him. Now he enjoys the fact that his success has made him a household name while some of his former classmates aren't exactly enjoying the same level of success.

He told Blunt "one of the cool kids from school now does my plumbing! That's a fact!" So being a little odd has it's benefits it seems.

Ed Sheeran, inspiring, talented and also single. Form an orderly line ladies.

Lorde is an 18-year-old better known for her successful music career than staged soundbites, but that hasn’t stopped the star opening up about her style in the July issue of Australian Vogue.

Over the weekend Lorde previewed her cover, keeping her cool girl status firmly intact as she referred to Vogue as a “pretty underground publication”. The cover shot features the young New Zealander in a floral Gucci max-dress, and she’s nailing it. Complete with that coveted dewy-look make-up, the teenager looks amazing.

While the cover is fabulous, it is a little different from the star’s signature long dark locks paired with equally dark lips. Speaking with the magazine the Royals singer addresses her trademark androgynous style by saying that she’s not afraid to buy men’s clothes if she likes how they look.

She also dishes about her trip to this year’s Met Ball, and we’re hoping she might have something to dish about what happens behinds the scenes with all of those famous faces, and dresses!

Following the release of her hit single in 2013, Lorde has achieved worldwide success and won a number of awards including Grammys and Billboard awards.

Getting a shout out from the editor-in-chief Edwina McCann, Lorde is described as “fiercely intelligent” and equally talented.

The teenager still manages to make the time for more down to earth activities when she’s not busy writing award winning albums. Previously the star has said she enjoys dumpster-diving in her free time at home and we wouldn’t mind hearing a little more about that particular hobby.

Styled by Christine Centenera, Lorde, real name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor, looks far from dumpster chic in this Vogue debut.

Famous folk often have a less famous sibling lurking in the wings, waiting patiently for their own moment in the spotlight.

There's a Solange Knowles for every Beyonce; a Monica Cruz for each Penelope.

Jennifer Lopez has Lynda (or Li-Lo, if you will), while Jessica Alba is sister to Joshua – an actor who's starred in TV dramas Dark Angel, and Monk (what, you've never heard of him?).

And now it has emerged that superstar singer-of-the-moment Ariana Grande has Frankie – her 32-year-old brother who's already made a name for himself as a YouTube sensation.

He's furthermore appeared on Broadway in productions of Mamma Mia! and Rock Of Ages, and last year was a contestant on the US version of Big Brother.

But he's decided to take it up a notch – embarking on his very own tour.

"I am so excited about this tour because I get to bring all the insanity, glitter and excitement that makes my life so GRANDE to my fans all over the country," Frankie told PEOPLE

"I can't wait to take the audience on this journey. I live a crazy life, and for an hour or so, you can come live it with me!"

Frankie and 21-year-old Ariana have the same mother, Joan, and the half-siblings remain incredibly close today. Indeed, the elder Grande is currently accompanying his sister on her massive world tour, Honeymoon.

However, while she continues to perform around Europe for the summer, he'll shortly be departing for the US: his own shows kick-off on June 27 in Los Angeles and are scheduled to run for two-and-a-half weeks.

2014 was definitely a year for the ladies on the music front. Bey, Iggy and Taylor were blowing up the airwaves with majorly catchy tunes and frankly, we couldn’t get enough.

But apart from our girls doing it for themselves, this musical year was seriously memorable in other ways too.

We’ve compiled a list, in no particular order, of some of this year’s biggest music moments; the good, the bad and the very, very ‘questionable’.

Let’s do this.

1. Mariah Carey’s Rockefeller Centre performance of All I Want For Christmas was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

The pitch, the tone and the God-awful hand gestures quickly turned this classic Christmas cracker into a major Christmas turkey. Why Mariah, why?

2. Will Ferrell and The Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith had a drum-off on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and girls, it was amazing.

With almost 27 million YouTube views, it quickly became one of our favourite musical moments of 2014.  Seriously, are those lads twins?

3. Queen Bey, who is now the most Grammy-nominated woman of all time (no biggie), blew us all away with her performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Love her or hate her, after checking out that 17 minute performance there’s no denying that that woman has got serious talent.

4. U2 decided to ‘gift’ us all with a copy of their latest album Songs of Innocence which would have been super nice…if anyone had actually wanted it.

Figuring out how to delete Bono’s unwanted presence on your iPod became this summer’s main goal.

5.Turn Down For What, a track by Lil John and DJ Snake, caught the imagination of the public fairly swiftly and before you knew where you were, randomers on the bus would be straight-up asking what you’d turn down for.

When Michelle Obama got in on the action and danced with a turnip, we knew it had all gotten a little too real.

6. Taylor Swift majorly dissed Spotify (gaaaaasp), pulled her catalogue from the service and still went platinum. Oh, snap!

In fact, Tay broke records by making 1.3 million in sales in the first week of 1989’s release, which was the highest one-week total since Eminem released The Eminem Show in 2002.

7. We kinda thought we’d seen it all and then Nicki Minaj brought out her video for Anaconda. Erm, we’re hip, we’re cool and we blushed. There we said it.

Then Ellen recreated it and we lol’ed forever…then blushed.

8. Every year one act is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this year’s accolade went to 90’s grunge band Nirvana who we all adored back in the day when we went through our 'alternative' phase.

Celebrating the memorable music moment went to the late Kurt Cobain’s band mates, Krist Novoselic and Foo Fighter’s front man Dave Grohl, who said he was: "the luckiest person in the world."

9. A second entry for music royalty, Queen Bey. The megastar released 7/11 and the music world was seriously surprised by Bey’s departure from her standard, multi- camera, high-budget videos.

The star opted for a more relaxed vibe and shot herself dancing at various locations using her own static camera. Big or small production, she still nails it every time.

10. Ed Sheeran and our very own Hozier lived every man’s dream by performing on the same stage as the  V.S Angels at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Props to the lads, they kept it together. Well, for the most part anyway.
