Foundation

About 1 million selfies are taken daily, and more than a third of these are retouched with any one of 20 Instagram filters (or with the help of a photo-editing app).

Yahoo Labs reviewed 7.6 million social media photos and found that doctored snaps were more likely to be viewed and draw in more likes.

So, with 4K (major high def) tech on it's way next year that will capture every pore and line, we want to know what foundations will give us an airbrush finish:

Make Up Forever Ultra HD Stick Foundation

This is best for women with normal to dry skin, who prefer a medium coverage.

It cradles small pigment particles in amino acids for a blurring effect, reflects light with connected minerals, and plumps skin with dewy acid spheres. Sound good enough? We think so.

Stila Perfectly Poreless Putty Perfector

This foundation is suitable for normal to combinatin skin, and for women who want to erase pores or acne scars.

A clever new mashup of cream foundation and pressed powder, it's the closest thing we've seen to cover up your pores. Tap it on your skin and blend to get a matte finish that also moisturises.

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Powder Foundation + Concealer

This is perfect for normal to oily skin, or if you have a bit of redness.

This powder is super-fine and will gently even out your skin. The formula feels creamy going on and absorbs shine without parching your skin.

Finding the right foundation for your skin can seem impossible at times – too yellow; too orange; too cakey; too oily; not enough coverage.

Yup… the list is endless!

But when you do find your perfect match (rejoice!), it is truly a wonderful thing.

The correct foundation acts as a canvas for the rest of your make-up, it conceals imperfections and unifies your skin tone – creating a flawless finish on your face.

We have selected some of the most reliable foundations on the market that we feel perform the best and meet the needs of women with a wide variety of concerns and skin types.

Have a look at our list:

Giorgio Armani – Fusion make-up

This is an industry favourite because of its lightweight formula. It blends easily and also dries matt (so no more shiny skin!). It is best suited for oily skin types and those who don't like their make-up too heavy.

Clinique – Even Better make-up

This foundation has a creamy texture along with great coverage all-round. It's the perfect choice for those who want to conceal imperfections or treat an uneven skin tone.

Bobbi Brown – Long-Wear Even Finish foundation

This oil-free formula is ideal for building coverage and lasting through-out the whole day. It comes in a wide range of colours from Porcelain to Expresso so there's bound to be a perfect match for you regardless of your ethnicity.

Bourjois – 123 Perfect foundation

This foundation comes at a great price of less than €15. It has a medium coverage and colour-correcting formula – something you can't go wrong with.

Nars – Sheer Glow foundation

With anti-oxidants built in to protect you against free radicals and turmeric extract to improve radiance, this foundation will leave your skin glowing and looking oh-so-healthy.

Chanel – Vitalumiére Aqua skin perfecting make-up

This beauty is extra light, blendable and long lasting. It offers a sheer and natural coverage with a hint of youthful dewiness. Yum!

Forget the manky sponges that sometimes come with powder and cream compacts, what’s now on offer is far more sophisticated. Complexion-perfecting sponges, used damp to buff in foundation, are back with a bang.

As a devotee to quite the ridiculous collection of make-up brushes, it took me a while to get excited about the beauty sponge trend. With enough buffing brushes to last a lifetime, I was still set on trying a few, though – all in the name of research, of course.

Sponges of this type are super-absorbent and best used damp. Run a clean one under the tap, squeeze well and repeat a few times – it should expand quite a bit. Dot foundation on with your fingers, and use the sponge to buff and blend as much as you see fit. You might need a second layer and it may take longer than using a brush, but the result will be far more seamless and ‘skin-like’. I especially love these sponges for working concealer into the undereye area.

Any downsides? As well as taking longer to use, cleaning and hygiene are also a biggie with these sponges. The best way to wash them is with baby shampoo, and alcohol from the chemist is good for disinfecting them, too. Oh, and make sure to keep sponges in a sealed container to ensure that they’re not rolling around in dust or dirt of any kind – bleugh!

The Beautyblender (€21 from cultbeauty.co.uk) is what set this trend alight. Mario Dedivanovic, the makeup artist most famous for Kim Kardashian’s signature look, has created a huge amount of hype around the original makeup sponge, and uses it not only for foundation, but also powder and even moisturiser from time to time! It was the first sponge I tried and remains my favourite; I love the pointed shape and I cannot achieve the finish it gives with any other tool. We might think of sponges as cheap, throwaway items, but these are really sophisticated and will last a long time if cared for correctly. If you’d prefer not to order online, it’s also available in Make Up For Ever on Clarendon St.

Blanaid Johnson, owner of Irish online beauty retailer Cloud10Beauty, reckons that ‘there are some pretty poor sponges out there… the materials used either absorbs too much product or is not soft enough for a flawless application. I like the flat edge on the Real Techniques one. It’s a simple addition which for me made it much more useful’. The Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is also a winner for me; not quite as amazing as the Beautyblender, but definitely great in its own right. The flat edge is really handy, and it’s also far better budget-wise at just €7.99 in Boots.

Blank Canvas Cosmetics, an Irish makeup brand, have their own version, the Airbrush Blender Sponge (€7.99). This is the largest and heaviest of the three sponges I’ve tried. Though the quality is still there, I found it just a little too big for getting into all of the various nooks and crannies of the face. I might just reserve this one for powder, Mario-style!

Bikinis, sunglasses, suncream – just a few necessities on every woman’s summer holiday checklist.

But one thing that many of us don’t think about buying is a foundation that will suit our newly bronzed skin (hey – a girl can always dream).

If you are thinking about trying a new foundation this summer, Fuschia Make Up has just launched its new range and it’s certainly worth a look.

Perfect Skin (€28) is an anti-ageing foundation but this is great for younger people too because it uses a plumping ingredient which will give your face an extra lift – perfect for those Monday mornings after a busy weekend of social engagements and party dates.

The Perfect Skin range also comes with the Velvet Veil primer (€15) which is useful for hiding any open pores that become so annoyingly obvious after a few hours of wearing foundation.

Fuschia has also found the answer to lasting foundation in the heat with its Setting Spray (€20) which can be used at the end of every make up application.

Fuschia Make Up is an Irish brand and you can buy it in salons and pharmacies around the country.

Even though it may seem like more hassle than it’s worth having a clean make-up bag. It’s not only important hygienically but it can be a time saver too. Here are some great tips to ensure that your make-up bag stays squeaky clean:

Pencils
Whether its eyeliner or lip liner regularly, sharpening pencils can prevent a messy bag but also ensure clean lines around the lips and eyes.

Foundation
A simple way to manage your liquid foundation leaks is to regularly use your multipurpose make-up remover wipes.

Brushes instead of sponge applicators
Brushes are not only easier to clean but tend to last longer too even after washing. Even though sponge applicators can create an even finish, they can lose their shape and texture after washing.

Clearing out your bag
It may seem obvious but having a good clear out and dumping old products ensures great hygiene but also better application when it comes to your make-up. Regularly scrubbing your bag with washing up liquid can also prevent the build-up of germs.

Swedish model, Frida Gustavsson, has said that natural make-up is all about not using make-up at all.

The former Victoria’s Secret model, who is spokesmodel for Maybelline, claims the best way to achieve a natural glow is to know where you should and should not use foundation.

Talking to Grazia magazine, the 20-year-old, who has walked the catwalk for the likes of Valentino, Chanel and Alexander McQueen to name but a few, said: “No make-up make-up is as much about where you don’t put your cosmetics as where you do. I’ve learnt to apply my foundation to the centre of my face for the most natural look. As soon as you take it to your temples, jaw line and the sides of your cheeks, it becomes too done.”

However, when you have flawless skin like Frida, who is used to having her make-up done by professional make-up artists every day, you can dare to use your foundation sparingly.

Would you dare to bare?

A recent poll found that the average woman will spend more of her life with make-up on than without it.

Shocking, we know.

A survey conducted by health brand Beurer found that a typical woman spends about 11 minutes each morning painting her face and keeps the make-up on for a full 13 hours before taking it off.

With foundation, concealer, mascara and eyeshadow being the most popular items worn by women, this just goes to show the lengths women go to for a confidence boost.

Two thirds admit they would leave it on even longer if they were expecting guests over and nearly one in five women said they wouldn’t open the door with a bare face.

It’s not right, but we can relate.

L.A beauty brand Wet n Wild has finally crossed the Atlantic and found a new home on Irish shelves.

With Fergie as a global ambassador and a celeb following that includes Rachel Bilson, Mila Kunis and Minka Kelly, we were very excited to hear we’d have constant access to this exciting range of budget-friendly make-up.

We put our beauty writer, Odette, on the case to test some of Wet n Wild’s best loved products and here’s what she thought:

CoverAll cream foundation
This will have you covered all day (and all night if you need it to!). I applied it first with my fingertips and then buffed into the skin with a brush. The result was a perfectly smooth, matte and airbrushed-like finish. This foundation covers a myriad of sins with ease and gives medium-to-full coverage, leaning more towards full coverage, in my opinion. It would be best suited for normal to oily skin types, and will keep shiny skin at bay!

MegaSlicks balm stains
This glides over your lips like a dream and leaves them soft, plumped and moisturised. The shade I used was E128, which is a lovely soft, pearly pink colour with a subtle gold iridescence. This would be a great everyday lip stain, giving you a hint of colour and shine. This stain sits beautifully on your lips and won’t leave them feeling dry or cracked.

MegaLast lip colour
Once this lipstick is in place, it’s not moving. It’s a long-wearing (4 hour) lip colour that gives your lips the “wow factor”. I tried Sugar Plum Fairy, which is a beautiful deep plum colour with purple-red undertones – perfect for a dramatic night time lip. Although I loved the colour, the formula was a little drying, so a lip gloss or lip balm over top is a must.

Unfortunately, make-up does not last forever, no matter how much you may have spent on it. If you are the type of lady who tends to cling on to their beloved products, you might want to take a few notes.

To avoid applying bacteria to your face, here is the low down on how long make up actually lasts for.

Mascara
This particular beauty product doesn’t last longer than three months. It is a breeding ground for bacteria and should be binned to save yourself catching a nasty, not to mention unattractive, infection.

Foundation
Foundation can last twice as long as mascara, although some can last for a year. Water-based ones should be thrown away after the six month mark as they attract bacteria. If you use it longer than recommended, you’ll just end up with spots and breakouts.

Eyeshadow
Eyeshadow tends to be the product that piles up in the bottom of the make-up bag. However, you might want to throw out any that have been there for more than three months. Creamy textured shadows tend to grow bacteria more than powder.

It’s definitely time to clear out your make-up bag.
