With spooky season creeping upon us quicky, it’s time to start thinking about Halloween festivities. What better way to get in the chilling spirit, than with tasty, seasonal Halloween themed dishes to enjoy with friends, family or trick-or-treaters.

Whether for warm, hearty lunches, an attempt to make dinner time exciting for the kids or for a ghastly evening dessert, these pumpkin-themed dishes will make your Halloween banquet one fit for the freakiest witches, wizards, ghosts and vampires.

Pumpkin potion soup (Serves 4)

This easy pumpkin soup recipe is perfect for using up leftover Halloween pumpkin and makes a great autumnal starter. If enjoying as a main, serve the soup with two portions of your favourite vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium pumpkin
  • Olive oil
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • 1 garlic bulb, sliced in half, horizontally
  • 1 brown onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 red chilli, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1tsp ground coriander
  • 1 vegetable stock cube
  • 500ml water, boiled
  • 1 handful pumpkin seeds
  • 2 tortilla wraps
  • 10 black olives, pitted

Method:

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 200ºC. On a large chopping board, slice your pumpkin in half and scoop out the seeds. Cut your pumpkin into small chunks and spread onto two baking trays. Drizzle with the olive oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and roast for 30-35 minutes until cooked through and golden at the edges. Once roasted, the skin can be easily peeled by hand.
  • Ten minutes prior to removing the pumpkin from the oven, in your largest saucepan, heat two tablespoons of olive oil over a medium heat. Add your onion, garlic and chilli and cook for ten minutes until soft. Adding the cumin and coriander, cook off for two to three minutes. Once the pumpkin has cooked, add it to the saucepan along with the vegetable stock. Allow to simmer for ten minutes and then blend to a smooth consistency. If necessary, add some more warm water.
  • Cut out spooky shapes from the tortilla wraps and pop them onto a baking tray. Bake until golden for around three minutes.
  • Serve the pumpkin potion in bowls along with a drizzle of olive oil and some pumpkin seeds scattered across the top. For extra creepy presentation, serve the scary tortilla chips on the side and slice olives to make googly eyes, arranging them over your soup for an extra fear factor.

Roasted pumpkin & pesto spookghetti (Serves 4)

If luring your little people to the dinner table on Halloween night is a challenge, then this dish is for you. This dish is best served with two portions of your favourite vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium pumpkin
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • 1 pack lardons
  • 150g walnuts
  • 500g spaghetti
  • 1 jar of green pesto

Method:

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 200ºC and on a large chopping board, slice your pumpkin in half, scooping out the seeds. Leave these to the side. Cut the pumpkin into medium sized chunks and spread onto two baking trays. Drizzle with the olive oil, salt and pepper and roast for 35-40 minutes until cooked through and golden at the edges. Once roasted, the skin can be easily peeled by hand.
  • In a cold frying pan, add the bacon lardons and fry gently over a medium heat until crispy.
  • When your pumpkin is cooked, grab one of the baking trays and pop on the walnuts. Put it into the oven for five minutes (max) to toast them.
  • In a large saucepan, boil some water and add a large pinch of sea salt. Add the pasta and cook for nine to ten minutes. Once cooked, drain the pasta, reserving a little bit of the water in a mug and popping back into the large pan.
  • Add a jar of pesto and stir to combine, followed by adding the pumpkin, bacon lardons and walnuts and mixing carefully. If it needs loosening, add a little pasta water.
  • Divide into four bowls and serve.

Warm pumpkin blondies (9 pieces)

Not sure what to do with leftover pumpkin after you've finished your Halloween carving? Try this tasty spin on brownies, made with sweet white chocolate and pecan nuts. Substitute the pumpkin for squash, if you'd prefer.

Ingredients:

  • 275g pumpkin flesh, cubed
  • 175g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
  • 2cm ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 200g light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 225g flour
  • 125g white chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 100g pecan nuts, roughly chopped

To serve:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • White chocolate, finally chopped
  • Pecan nuts, finely chopped

Method:

  • Place the pumpkin flesh in a saucepan and cover with boiling water from the kettle. Boil for 15 – 20 minutes until tender. Drain, return to the pan and mash, then set aside and allow to cool.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 5. Grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square shallow cake tin.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the butter, ginger, vanilla and sugar until creamy. Add the egg and beat well. Stir through the mashed pumpkin. Sift over the flour and fold into the mixture using a wooden spoon. Fold in the white chocolate and pecans. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, until an inserted cocktail stick comes out clean. Cool in the tin for ten minutes, then remove and cool on a wire rack for a further 15 minutes.
  • If using for dessert, cut into 9 squares and decorate with the finely chopped white chocolate and pecans. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Halloween is just around the corner so make plans to discover the history and mystery of the 800-year-old Hook Lighthouse and celebrate a free traditional Samhain Festival from October 29th and 30th with vastly lantern-led tours on offer each evening.

On Sunday and Monday (Oct 29th and 30th ) a free Féile Samhain celebration will be on offer at Hook Lighthouse from noon to 4pm each day.

There will be a Halloween Fancy dress competition with prizes awarded to individuals and families. There will be a scary Treasure Quest, Pirate Pat will be up to spooky shenanigans and throughout mid-term, there is an opportunity to book a Pumpkin Painting workshop with the Hook’s resident artist Rose.

Of course, family tours of the 800-year-old lighthouse are also on offer daily. The lighthouse grounds have been taken over by the púcaí of the Hook and unsightly findings might just terrify the finder.

Later in the evenings every half hour on Sunday the 29th and Monday the 30th of October at 6.00, 6.30 and 7.00 pm for adults and over 12’s ONLY ghastly and ghoolish lantern-led tours of the 800-year-old tower are not for the faint-hearted.

The word on the waves lapping the shores of the ancient tower is that visitors will venture into the black and ascend the 115 steps of the 800-year-old tower for a nighttime view of the graveyard of 1,000 ships. This year sees the tower being invaded by a host of characters who all have their own agenda to scare you and have you leave the ghostly tower before you reach the top. They will not be defeated, are you brave enough to enter and stay the course?

These tours are suitable for brave adults and braver kids (over 12 only – children must be accompanied by an adult) but are not for anyone of a nervous disposition. Pre-booking is essential at €10 per person online at www.hookheritage.ie.

The Lighthouse café is open every day from 9.30 to 12.00 for breakfast; the Lighthouse Cafe also offers a full menu from 9.30 to 4.45 pm and will be serving traditional Samhain fare for Halloween weekend. The lighthouse visitor centre is open every day year-round, for further details visitors can ring 051-397055 or email info@hookheritage.ie or see www.hookheritage.ie.

Now a firm Dublin City Council Bram Stoker Festival favourite, Stokerland (recommended for all ages), the free annual pop-up Victorian fun park, opens its Gothic Gates for families and the eternally young for three days in St. Patrick’s Park. Since 1904, families and children have enjoyed fun and games in this stunning park beneath the shadow of one of the city’s most-beautiful cathedrals, and our Gothic gathering of fun and games continues this Victorian-era tradition! Each day at Stokerland is different, with all sorts of activities taking place across the park. This year, there'll be a delicious mix of storytelling and draw-alongs, bands, discos and dance parties, street theatre & walkabout performers, art workshops, spooky science shows, magic shows and circus workshops.

On Monday 30 October, from 11am – 1pm,the festival will host a Relaxed Session of Stokerland in St Patrick's Park. At Time To Vote, Warmbloods: Vampires Question Modern Art (recommended for children aged 12+), two of Dublin’s most-genteel vampires, Winnifred and Anne, are trying to come to terms with modern art. Can they, as old things themselves, accept modern paintings? Are they dusty enough? Are they as nice as their old favourites? On this comedy tour of the National Gallery of Ireland, they’ll enlist the help of attendees in finally answering their age-old question – Do Vampires Like Modern Art?. This tour is performed and written by Underthings (Debbie Cheevers and Denny MacDermott) an improv/sketch duo from Dublin who specialise in dark, domestic comedy and hard stares.

Find out about the trials and tribulations of life as a soldier living in the Barracks from the 1700s until the late 1900s, with a focus on (ill-) health, as well as the transition from one of Europe’s oldest occupied Barracks into one of Ireland’s National Museums. At Hands-on History: Malady, Mourning and Mystery (recommended for all ages), museum educators will facilitate an interactive session with objects from the Museum’s handling collection that reflect a history of life, disease and death. Move out of the sun and into the Museum to learn all about how people fought illness and mourned losses in the Victorian era.

For over three centuries, Ireland’s oldest public library has stood in Saint Patrick’s Close on the edge of the Cathedral graveyard, which for early readers provided the only path to its door. At Spooky Stories at Marsh's Library (recommended for all ages), guests are invited to wander the darkened galleries where books of witchcraft, martyrdom and heresy are to be found. Prepare to be enthralled as the library’s knowledgeable staff recount spine-tingling anecdotes from its intriguing past in a setting almost entirely unchanged since Stoker’s visit.

Jack Whitehall has revealed the unusual way that he chose the name of his first child!

The Bad Education star became a father for the first time last month, as he and his girlfriend Roxy Horner welcomed a baby daughter.

Following their little one’s birth, Jack confirmed that the new parents had decided to name their baby girl Elsie.

As he continues to settle into fatherhood, the 35-year-old has now recalled a comical story surrounding the process of naming his first child.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, which is due to air tonight, Jack was asked about his newborn’s arrival, and the difficult decision of naming his daughter.

“About a month before she was born, I had to spike some inappropriate names my girlfriend Roxy suggested,” the comedian teased.

“One day she asked what I thought of ‘Phoenix’. I said, ‘Over my dead body, it’s a stripper’s name.’ Asked how I knew, I found myself googling the top 10 strippers’ names. Phoenix is not on the list, but number one is Roxy!” he exclaimed.

Later in his interview, the father-of-one was asked if the material for his ongoing stand-up tour, titled Settle Down, has differed now that he has become a parent.

“It’s changed a bit and I do feel a bit guilty that I am making punchlines up about her!” Jack stated with a laugh.

Jack, who has been in a relationship with Roxy since the beginning of 2020, took to social media on September 6 to confirm Elsie’s arrival.

“So excited to have started a family of my own. Having vowed I’d never be that guy I am now 100% going to be the parent that shows everyone endless pictures of their kid,” he penned at the time, alongside two sweet snaps of himself with baby Elsie.

You can catch Jack’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show tonight on BBC One at 10:40pm.

Davide Sanclimenti has finally shared the cause of his brief breakup with Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu!

The former Love Island stars, who met on and won the show last summer, shocked fans in June of this year when they announced their split. Just two months later, the couple seemed to confirm that their romance was back on.

Now, after a whirlwind year, Davide has opened up about the reason why he and Ekin-Su briefly ended their relationship.

In an interview with The Sun, the 28-year-old reflected on reuniting with the Turkish actress.

"It's a lovely feeling being with Ekin, we probably broke up more publicly but never privately because we have always been in touch and the love between me and Ekin has always been there,” he explained.

Davide then went on to insist that their breakup was never official, despite releasing a statement at the time stating that they were “no longer together”.

"Breaking up may happen to people but it never actually happened to us. We never properly privately broke up, it was more to do with the public pressure and we were having some tough months,” he recalled.

However, the Italian model sweetly went on to note that their romance is “stronger” now.

"Nor me nor Ekin were perfect in the relationship and probably needed to have a bit more communication, and now I don't regret nothing that happened because I feel stronger and I feel we understand each other,” Davide gushed.

"I feel like she's a lot more nice to me in certain situations and understands me more and at the same time I try to put myself in her shoes in certain situations,” he shared.

Davide also confirmed that the pair are planning on moving back in together, after it was reported that their London apartment had been put up for rent.

"Whenever we are in Manchester, she is in Manchester with me and whenever we are down in Essex, we are in Essex together,” he concluded.

Netflix is treating us this Friday afternoon to the trailer for the upcoming assassin movie The Killer.

This gripping film stars Michael Fassbender and will have you on the edge of your seat.

With the tagline, “Execution is everything”, this highly-anticipated movie is based on the graphic novel series The Killer written by Alexis Nolent aka Matz, and will air on Netflix on November 10.

The synopsis of the film reads, “After a fateful near-miss an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal”.

Netflix has also revealed that Michael’s character, the unnamed assassin, will find himself hunting those who threaten him, despite his personal mantra to ‘remain detached and methodical’.

The trailer proves the assassin’s ‘carefully constructed’ life and work as he’s heard saying, “I find music a useful distraction, a focus tool. Keeps the inner voice from wandering”, before he carries out a job.

“My process is purely logistical”, he goes on to explain as he can be seen in different disguises.

Describing what it takes to succeed at being an assassin, he reveals he must, “Forbid empathy, trust no one. Fight only the battle you’re paid to fight”.

Tyson Fury has spoken out about missing the birth of his seventh child with his wife Paris.

Tyson and Paris’ seventh child, a baby boy named Rico, arrived into the world last month.

As the boxer has been preparing to fight UFC champion Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia, Fury explained that ‘things have to be sacrificed’ in order for him to train for the event.

While chatting on Good Morning Britain earlier today, the 35-year-old was asked by host Kate Garraway, “As you say, you have been training for this, very very hard, to the point when you even missed the birth of your seventh child. That must have been a blow?”.

Tyson explained, “Yes that's correct but daddy has gotta do what daddy's gotta do, you know”.

“Bills have to be paid, things have to be sacrificed and Paris understands that when I am in camp, I can't be there all night at the hospital”.

Although he wasn't there to witness Rico’s birth, the dad-of-seven revealed that he saw his wife and their newest addition shortly after he was born.

Fury said, “But I got to see him early hours in the morning when they were born so that's all fantastic”.

When previously opening up to OK! about Tyson missing Rico’s birth, Paris admitted, “Usually he’s there by my side, but he had to bail out because he’s fully immersed in training at camp”.

“He was there until a few hours before Rico was born. Things were going quite slowly, so it seemed like the baby wasn’t going to come until the next day”.

Paris then explained, “Tyson left and my mum came in, she was my second birthing partner. His dad came in and saw him soon after”.

As well as having Rico together, Tyson and Paris are already proud parents to 14-year-old Venezuela, 11-year-old Prince John James, seven-year-old Prince Tyson II, five-year-old Valencia, four-year-old Prince Adonis Amaziah and two-year-old Athena.

Les Misérables musical fans have shared their delight as stage actress Carrie Hope Fletcher has revealed the gender of her first child.

Carrie announced the wonderful news that she was expecting her first baby with her husband Joel Montague last month.

Carrie and Joel are now celebrating their honeymoon at Disneyland in America and while on the trip, surprised fans by revealing their little one’s gender.

Heading to Instagram, the pair shared an adorable photo of them holding up a little Minnie Mouse dress in front of the Disney castle and wrote, “We can’t wait to welcome our little girl”.

Fans of the Les Misérables musical star rushed to the comments to congratulate the pair on their exciting news.

One fan said, “What a reveal!!! This Disney princess is going to be so much loved! The first Fletcher baby girl, congratulations!”.

“Awwwww! Cutest post and dress ever x”, penned another commenter.

A third added, “Aw you guys! This is so lovely! Congratulations xx”.

Carrie then took to her Instagram Stories to explain why they decided to reveal their first child’s gender to her 600K followers after previously saying they wouldn’t be sharing the news.

The expectant mum wrote, “Whilst we didn’t do a classic “gender reveal” where we as the parents found out via cake or smoke grenades or balloons or what not, we did want to find out the sex of the baby”.

“So after a blood test and a scan to confirm we were having a little girl, we’ve enjoyed the news for the past six weeks and shared it with our family and friends”.

Fletcher then added, “It’s gotten harder and harder not to slip up in the stories or posts and say “she” when talking about our baby so instead of accidentally telling everyone we thought it’d be nice to do a little post to let anyone who wanted to know, know”.

Carrie Hope and Joel got married in February when they eloped to Scotland for a private ceremony after less than a year of dating.

The parents-to-be held a big ceremony to celebrate their marriage surrounded by their loved ones in August.

When announcing Carrie’s pregnancy in September, she revealed, “We are beside ourselves to meet the newest member of our family early next year! This little one is already so loved”.
