Olivia Newton-John’s husband has been opening up about her passing and the life he led with her.

John Easterling was at Olivia’s bedside when she passed away in August of last year at the age of 73.

The Grease star had been battling breast cancer for several years. She received her first diagnosis in 1992 and had worked tirelessly with cancer organisations in both Australia and the United States.

Olivia’s widower John was speaking at the G’Day USA Gala in Los Angeles over the weekend, at which his late wife was honoured posthumously. Attendees at the event included the likes of singer Katy Perry and model Miranda Kerr.

In his speech, the 70-year-old spoke lovingly of Olivia, who he married in June 2008. “We shared a love and a happiness on an order of magnitude that I didn’t even think was possible,” he told the audience.

“Olivia and I unexpectedly, madly, deeply, forever fell in love in the Amazon rainforest,” he recalled adoringly.

John then went on to describe life with Olivia as ‘magic’, noting the wonderful marriage they had together. “For the past 15 years, I’ve been blessed to share the depth and the passion of her being,” he gushed.

“Every day with Olivia was a bit of magic. Every day with Olivia was supernatural,” John added. “She was the most courageous and compassionate woman that I’ve ever known, with a calming capacity to genuinely care about other people.”

John concluded his tribute to his late wife by praising her for using her worldwide platform to carry out inspirational work.

“There’s an old adage that like attracts like, and Olivia knew that her voice and her huge profile of talents were a gift,” he explained. “Her legacy continues as a joyful, healing spirit who is continuously focused on moving things, in her words, ‘into the love and the light.’”

Olivia’s only child Chloe also spoke at the event, with the 37-year-old promising that she would “honour my mum’s mission and keep her dream alive”.

“She was curious and intuitive, and knew the power of plant medicine and ancient wisdom that we have within us all. She was a powerful being,” Chloe said in tribute.

New research undertaken by Boots has revealed that 84% of women feel that there are not enough supports in place for women who are experiencing symptoms of menopause or perimenopause.

Research showed that the availability of information and help (34%) was lacking for women on the menopause journey. More awareness and public discussion (22%), support and help from doctors and GPs (14%), support from employers (9%), advice (9%), access to counselling (7%) and HRT (5%) were also noted as missing support for menopausal and perimenopausal women.

Almost 9 in 10 (86%) females aged 45-65 who have experienced menopause claim that they would seek support and advice from their GP, with almost 6 in 10 (57%) claiming that they would ask for support from their local pharmacy or a dedicated menopause clinic Those choosing to attend a pharmacy felt that pharmacists provide good advice, are helpful and trustworthy (47%), that it is convenient (22%) and felt that they could be as good as a GP or doctor (16%).

Barriers to seeking advice from a pharmacy include privacy concerns (51%), with women preferring to speak to an expert (12%) or with someone with more knowledge and experience of the menopause (12%). To combat this concern, all Boots pharmacy stores offers a private consultation room for customers. Those who wish to discuss their symptoms in private can enquire with a member of the pharmacy team.

With so many women seeking help from their local pharmacy, Boots has provided comprehensive menopause training to 1,400 No7 Advisors across Ireland and the UK. They understand that women will experience menopause in different ways and with that, can offer a range of advice and support. Information on Boots.ie can be used as a resource for support and advice. Boots is assisting in guiding women as they manage signs and symptoms, and to help them feel empowered and in control. This support, along with products and services, are available online and in stores nationwide.

Women experience a variety of physical symptoms during perimenopause and menopause, that go beyond hot flushes and night sweats. Research shows that two thirds of women noted changes to their skin. Many women do not understand how the skin changes during perimenopause and menopause and there is a need for education and information about the ingredients and products that can help visibly improve the skin during this life-stage.

Women who had experienced menopause and perimenopause noticed that their skin became dehydrated (76%). They also noticed a loss of collagen (62%), dullness (48%), increased sensitivity (27%) and discolouration (24%) amongst other changes (6%). Almost 6 in 10 (55%) women who experienced the menopause claimed to notice a change in their hair. Over half of these women noted that hair had become more brittle (58%), hair had thinned (56%), they experienced a loss of volume (48%) and had a dry scalp (44%) amongst other changes (2%).

To aid these symptoms, Boots last year launched a range of products as part of the No7 Menopause Skincare Collection. The range was launched following five years of scientific research and in collaboration with more than 7,000 menopausal women. The No7 Menopause Skincare line comprises an Instant Radiance Serum, Protect & Hydrate Day Cream, Nourishing Overnight Cream, and an Instant Cooling Mist and the newest addition, the Firm and Bright Eye Concentrate.

No7 Menopause Skincare Collection

The Firm and Bright Eye Concentrate instantly refreshes tired-looking eyes and is proven to hydrate dry skin around the eyes. The metal roller applicator provides an instant cooling sensation and targets the appearance of dark circles and wrinkles.

Half of those who have experienced menopause revealed that they had previously sought information on what vitamins, minerals or supplement may support them on the menopause journey. Within that cohort, 32% of women are currently taking some form of vitamins and/or supplements.

Speaking about the research, Director of Pharmacy and Superintendent Pharmacist at Boots, Caoimhe McAuley said “The research highlights that Irish women need robust and reliable support as they experience the substantial impact of menopause on their physical and psychological health. Boots want to normalise this and share expert advice in an accessible way. Guidance provided by trained staff from the pharmacy team and on the No.7 beauty counters ensures that Boots is the best place for women to go to for support with symptoms. I’d encourage anyone needing advice or support to visit their local pharmacy store”.

It has been confirmed that Ireland’s sexual assault units reached record statistics last year.

In a combined statistic, all six centres treated over 1,000 people last year. The treatment units are located across the country, in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Mullingar and Waterford.

In total, all of the sexual assault units saw a patient increase of almost 200 people in 2022.

Heartbreakingly, it has also been revealed that a fifth of all patients who seeked treatment at these sexual assault units were between the ages of 14 and 17.

The figure of those reporting the crimes they experienced also decreased, with just 60% of victims choosing to report their experience to Gardaí.

The national clinical lead for Ireland’s SAT units, Dr Maeve Eogan, has stressed that it is difficult to gauge a clear picture from these statistics. “If you are an optimist you would say more people know about our service, so hopefully the totality of sexual crime is not increasing and people are seeking care and seeking support and accessing that at a time and place that suits them and is responsive to their needs,” she explained. “But we don’t know that for sure and it could be that sexual crime is increasing.”

“There is a whole lot of international evidence that the acute services see the tip of the iceberg as such, in terms of people reaching out for care after sexual crime,” Dr Eogan added. “I would hope that the iceberg is not getting bigger but that the tip [of it] we are seeing is getting bigger.”

Dr Eogan shared that around 15% of the units’ patients in 2022 were unsure about making a crime report, but decided to store DNA evidence in case they wish to speak to Gardaí in the future. The SAT units hold onto evidence for each patient for a year.

Lastly, Dr Eogan insisted that for things to change successfully, education needs to begin as soon as possible. “When people talk about education in colleges, absolutely there does need to be but we cannot forget the very critical role of in-school education, parental education and societal discussion starting from an early age and letting children know that they have a right to bodily integrity and letting children know what to do if something is not right,” she detailed.

The podcaster and author revealed over the weekend that she is expecting another child with her former footballer husband Rio Ferdinand. The wonderful news comes six months after the couple shared that they had experienced a devastating miscarriage.

Earlier this morning, the expectant mum decided to take to Instagram to share her first official bump snap since announcing her third pregnancy with Rio.

“Good morning, bump pictures incoming,” Kate promised. “Thank you so much for all of your lovely messages, we are all just so excited! So happy we’ve shared this with you, I’ve found it hard keeping this one quiet,” she added with a tease.

Alongside her first ‘bumpdate’, Kate also decided to treat her fans to a brief life update on her podcast, Blended.

“Guys, as you may have seen on Instagram, we’ve got some exciting news… we’re expecting another baby!”, the 31-year-old exclaimed on the episode, which was released today.

“We’re going to have five children,” she marvelled before joking, “When I say that out loud, it frightens me!”

Kate then went on to detail that she and Rio decided to tell their other children on Christmas Eve, and delivered the news in their Christmas Eve boxes. However, the news didn’t sink in with their youngest! “Creed doesn’t know what’s going on,” she joked.

In an emotional segment, Kate later opened up about how her heartbreaking miscarriage last year has affected her mindset with her ongoing pregnancy. “I’ve been a bit nervous to share it because of my last miscarriage and it just makes the whole situation a bit more anxious. You’re a little bit more worried and you’re really hoping that it’s going to be okay,” she explained.

“We told our family and friends but there’s still that element of doubt and worry, which I suppose you have throughout your whole pregnancy, but I’ve just been a little bit more cautious,” she noted.

Kate and Rio welcomed their first child together, a son named Cree, in December 2020. Kate is also a stepmum to Rio’s three children – Lorenz (16), Tate (14) and Tia (11) – whom he shared with his late wife Rebecca.

Aer Lingus has today announced a new brand platform entitled ‘You’re Very Welcome’. The new creative platform, developed with Droga5, marks the first time Aer Lingus has released a brand campaign in over seven years, positioning the brand as a human-centric, modern airline that embodies Irish values.

A momentous new chapter for the airline, the new creative platform will feature a TV ad complimented with an ATL campaign that will run across TV, digital, and social and across the brand’s owned channels from January 27th. The ad takes place on an Airbus A330 aircraft which operates Aer Lingus’ transatlantic schedule. Featuring passengers and cabin crew, the ad delves into the stories of every person on every seat, and the people within Aer Lingus who make the airline what it is. Shining a light on the many ways the airline goes above and beyond what’s expected, the first heart-warming story depicted in the ad is about a caring and patient young girl and her family, and the small but intuitive ways the Aer Lingus cabin crew take care of her. The new tagline “You’re very welcome” is introduced for the first time in the ad – a quintessentially Irish greeting that provides comfort the moment it is heard.

The new brand idea will launch in Ireland in January 2023, and will be rolled out across the entire brand ecosystem, from new routes, sponsorships and more. The platform will also roll out to other markets, including the UK and the US, throughout 2023.

Susanne Carberry, Chief Customer Officer, Aer Lingus said:

“This is the start of our new story. Aer Lingus is an iconic Irish brand, and our ambition is to reach new markets in 2023 through the modernisation of our brand and digital platforms. We believe that Aer Lingus can be differentiated from other airlines due to our determination to put people first, showcasing Irish values both at home and abroad. The personalised care our team is known for, particularly on board, is central to our new brand platform and comes to life in this new ad campaign. Our new brand values will allow us to continue to highlight more human stories of our highly valued customers across all markets globally.”

Jen Speirs, Executive Creative Director – Droga5 Dublin

“We’ve been working with Aer Lingus for over 6 years, and this is one of the most exciting projects we’ve undertaken together. This new brand platform is a real opportunity to double-down on what makes Aer Lingus different to every other airline in the world; they’re simply a more human airline. They see their passengers as people, and use instincts and intuition when it comes to caring for them. That’s why when it came to launching the platform, we wanted to tell a story that showed that one-of-a-kind care. It feels uniquely Irish, progressive and utterly, utterly empathetic. All the things that we look for when we fly, and we’re excited to keep building on this idea.”
