Tesco Ireland has launched its annual Christmas Appeal, taking place in 115 stores nationwide from Friday, 1st December – Sunday, 3rd December, and online now. Niamh Kavanagh, Singer and Eurovision Winner, has teamed up with Tesco this year to encourage customers to donate non-perishable food items, clothing or toys to benefit local Family Resource Centres and organisations supporting children and their families this Christmas across Ireland.

Since 2013, €1.7 million has been donated through the annual appeal – the equivalent of 1.4 million meals have been shared with those in need in local communities across Ireland. The campaign encourages shoppers to purchase an additional item during their trip to selected Tesco stores and donate it to the Christmas Appeal trolley located in the store on their way out. Customers are being asked to pick up an extra non-perishable food item (e.g. tea bags, pasta and rice, breakfast cereals, and tinned goods) or household necessities (e.g. toiletries, nappies, small clothing items, and toys) to add to the trolley, with 100% of the items being donated to over 165 community groups across the country.

Niamh Kavanagh, Singer & Eurovision Winner

Niamh Kavanagh, Tesco Christmas Appeal Brand Ambassador and Eurovision Winner said: “I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Tesco to raise awareness for this year’s Christmas Appeal. Having worked in Tesco myself during the pandemic, I’ve seen first-hand the great work that they do to help families across the country. Even the smallest donation can help make someone’s Christmas that bit better, so if you’re in a position to do so, please consider picking up one additional item during your shop and donating it to the Christmas Appeal trolleys located in Tesco stores nationwide, or purchase a donation bundle online.”

Fergal Landy, CEO of the Family Resource National Forum (FRC) said: “We are delighted that many of our 121 Family Resource Centres around the country are partnering with Tesco Ireland as part of their Christmas Appeal. Whilst FRCs are committed to challenging the underlying causes of social and economic disadvantage, we also understand the immediate challenges faced by families this Christmas. The Tesco Ireland Christmas Appeal, Stronger Starts programme, and donation of surplus food through FoodCloud allow FRCs to combine responding to immediate needs with a long-term community development approach, that offers holistic support and tangible pathways out of poverty for parents and for their children.”

Christmas Appeal donation trolleys will be attended to by volunteers from local Family Resource Centres and other local organisations helping to support children and their families. This is the second year the Christmas Appeal will also run online at Tesco.ie until Sunday, 3rd December, where customers have the option to purchase a €2.50 and/or €5 bundle for donation.

At Tesco, the spirit of giving is not just for Christmas time. Tesco Ireland has committed to doubling the reach of its Stronger Starts programme by the end of 2024. This means that hundreds more primary school children most in need and their families will receive free nutritious fresh seasonal fruit and veg to help with meal solutions at home. Stronger Starts is an innovative community support programme from Tesco that helps to build thriving communities nationwide. By doubling the reach, Tesco aims to provide children in 240 DEIS primary schools who are most at risk of food insecurity with a food pack containing fresh apples, onions, potatoes, and carrots every week.

Alexandra Burke has been opening up about returning to work after she became a mum.

The singer shares two children with her boyfriend Darren Randolph. Their first child was born in July 2022, while their second arrived in September of this year.

Alexandra returned to work just over two months after having both of her children and now she has admitted to feeling ‘pressure’ about going back to work and performing so soon after the birth of her little ones.

The 35-year-old spoke on the Dirty Mother Pukka podcast and got teary as she reflected on an incident that occurred amid going back to work after having her first child.

When Burke was on tour, she had her first-born with her but revealed they were upset and needed feeding right as she was about to go on stage.

Admitting to feeling mum guilt that she still had to perform, Alexandra explained, “There were times when I was about to go on stage, and my first born was crying and they're like, ‘Curtain needs to go up’, and I was like ‘I need to feed the baby’”.

“I asked them to hold the show and the pressure I had and felt to get my a** on that stage”.

“I said, ‘You may as well just let me feed the baby because I'm crying on stage’, and you couldn't open the show because I was standing there crying”.

“And as much as everyone was like, ‘the baby will be fine, it will be fine’. But I'm their mum and I have to look after this child”.

Alexandra went on to say, “I felt such guilt, and I still hold that guilt, and it's not like even the baby remembers, but I won't forget that. I remember saying, ‘I will never allow myself to walk away from my child ever again, and it’s never happened since’.

“The pressure I felt, I refused to feel that again, in that sense where, if the child needs me, the baby needs me and everything else can wait”.

The Broken Heels singer then clarified, “I also have to say whilst I felt that pressure, and that moment stays with me, I did of course sign up to do that show and the curtain does go up at 7.30pm every single night and I'm very much aware of that”.

“There are thousands of people in the audience waiting for the show to start so I don't blame anyone for that situation. At the same time it still makes me feel emotional”.

Alexandra added, “Of course, it was a learning curve for myself and I will never put myself in that sort of situation again. At the same time it still makes me feel emotional because in that moment, I just wanted to feed my child”.

New legislation to provide Gardaí with body-worn cameras has been passed.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has welcomed the passage of key legislation to provide An Garda Síochána with these body-worn cameras.

The bodycams will give Gardaí greater access to CCTV and to provide for community CCTV.

Minister McEntee revealed that the legislation will put An Garda Síochána on a ‘clear path to begin rolling out bodycams on frontline Gardaí from next year’.

Gardaí in Dublin City Centre will be provided bodycams from next spring.

Other announcements were made by Commissioner Harris and the senior leadership team of An Garda Síochána to state that there will be an expansion of other measures including the provision of stronger incapacitating spray for all Gardaí; the provision of tasers to public order units, subject to training; and more public order training for Gardaí.

There will also be more and improved public order equipment and vehicles; more Garda data scientists to support the analysis of evidential material; the purchase of hand held video cameras for public order units; and the further expansion of public order tactics.

Speaking about the rollout of bodycams in the coming year, Minister McEntee said, “The Government is committed to ensuring An Garda Síochána have the resources, the equipment and the technology necessary to build stronger, safer communities”.

“This includes ensuring that Gardaí have body worn cameras, which has been a priority of mind for some time”.

The Minister continued by mentioning the riots that broke out last week in Dublin city centre. She stated, “The shocking scenes we witnessed last Thursday night show how crucial bodycams, as well as tools such as Facial Recognition Technology, are to protecting Gardaí and help bring criminals to justice”.

“These tough new laws will help An Garda Síochána identify perpetrators and gather evidence directly. It will help them deal with public order and with tackling incitement by the far right”.

“But there will also be other benefits this Bill – greater access to Automatic Number Plate Recognition will help with longer term investigations, and reduce the time it takes to collate evidence and track suspects”.

Jeff Brazier has been opening up about his son Bobby sharing his experience with the loss for the first time publicly.

Bobby lost his mum, Jade Goody, in 2009 after she battled cervical cancer.

To honour Jade, Bobby, who is starring in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing competition, dedicated his latest routine to her, and revealed the performance was also inspired by her.

He danced alongside Dianne Buswell to Kate Bush’s touching song This Woman’s Work.

Following the emotional dance, Bobby’s dad has now shared more of an insight into his reaction to the tribute, and revealed that his son hadn’t spoken out about the loss of his mum with the public until Saturday night.

While speaking to MailOnline, Jeff explained, “I was nervous for him anyway, because you just are, but I was so apprehensive because Bobby hasn't necessarily shared his experience of loss publicly before”.

“I worried it would be overwhelming. Also, that it would end up bringing up some unresolved grief he had”.

The reality star continued, “I worried that he'd find it too much. Grief is ugly, but to watch him be able to translate it into this understandable, beautiful thing, was amazing”.

Jeff went on to admit that he ‘knew he would cry’ at the moving Strictly performance.

“Oh I knew I would cry, but it was still overwhelming. The lovely Dan Walker was sitting behind me and he tapped me on the shoulder at one point and passed me a tissue. It was a very emotional thing, given the circumstances”.

The day after the EastEnders actor’s dance, Jeff shared an emotional statement on social media about his son to say, “To share your grief even to just one person can be a daunting prospect but to express it so movingly in front of millions takes incredible courage so thank you for your inspiration”.

He added, “Bobbys favourite song wasn’t just an outlet for his frustrations years ago & a wonderful tribute to Jade, I also think, appropriately that ‘this woman’s work’ also recognises perfectly what you’re made of, what you’re giving and who you are”.

“Although the routine was a blur and the anticipation highly emotional I enjoy so much watching all perform, the fact bobby is holding his own amongst such talent & creativity is astonishing”.
