Our pets provide us with an endless supply of love. From keeping us company to being the best cuddle buddy you could ask for, they truly are the ultimate givers. Just looking into their eyes and giving them pats help us relax and enjoy their company even more.

And if that wasn’t enough, our pets can help lower stress, overcome loneliness and be greatly beneficial to our mental health. You may have even noticed your pets can seek out when we’re not feeling our best, giving us extra attention when we’re upset or not feeling well.

So how do pets help us so much, simply by existing and being present? Let’s take a look at the benefits our pets provide us and how we can show our appreciation (aside from showering them with new pet products!).

Pets provide companionship

Loneliness is a difficult emotion to shoulder, and we all need some social interaction every now and then—especially kids. And if we don’t get enough, we can start to feel isolated and a little down in the dumps. But when you have a pet in your home who greets you with energy and genuine excitement and enjoys a good cuddle, it’s hard to not feel like you’re important and loved!

Plus, who is more loyal than our pets? That alone is a good feeling to know we have someone who will stick by us through thick and thin, loving us unconditionally no matter what we’re going through. Yep—pets are pretty special!

They give us purpose

Owning a pet is a big responsibility. Walking, feeding, bathing, changing out their water, grooming… the list goes on. It is a big thing to know their health and happiness is in our hands. But that’s a good thing!

This responsibility can help give us more purpose, and make us expand our thoughts to include someone outside ourselves—which can be tricky when you’re used to being alone.

By needing us, our furry friends ensure we get up and out of bed each day. From being the dedicated pet bowl monitor, to needing a groom and somewhere to get out all their zoomies, caring for our pet can ensure we ourselves stay active and keep our minds busy.

Pets force us outside and into social situations

Getting outside and into the fresh air is always good for our health, both physical and mental. And when you have a pup that needs their daily walk, it forces us out into nature probably more often than we’d admit. So, getting outside together, whether it’s a run around the garden or a walk in our neighbourhood, is good for your furry friend and yourself as well.

Pets are also a great way to make friends. Even if you’re on the shy side, animals are natural ice breakers—so you don’t need to worry about small talk! You may even start noticing more people smiling your way while you’re out walking Fido. By wandering the same route every day, you may naturally start forming friendships with common passers-by, strike up a conversation or even meet their own pup! Simply stepping out with your pooch is a great start to all of it.

They lower our stress levels

Did you know spending time with your pet can help reduce your stress levels? The soft feel of their fur and gazing into their big brown eyes is enough to give us a little bit of a dopamine hit, which helps us relax (and feel loved at the same time!). Cuddling with our furry friends also has the same result—making bonding time easy and chill while both of you enjoy each others’ company!

They are always there

Of course, our pets are always there for us, no matter what’s going on in life. If you’ve had a tough day, knowing you will walk through the door to a wagging door and a waiting ear is enough to make you smile. Even when they’re fast asleep in the corner, or having puppy dreams, or simply staring out the window—there is certainly a comfort in their presence that is difficult to find anywhere else.

Loving your pet is such a natural, easy thing; and it’s no wonder why! While we show them love, affection and support, they give it back to us ten-fold, helping us with our own happiness, mental health, and keeping us from feeling lonely. They really are the best!

The season of Junior and Leaving Cert exams is finally upon us, and a record number of students have registered for the tests this year.

An astonishing 135,033 students have started their Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle exams today, with both year groups being tested on English earlier this morning.

More than 800 schools and exam centres are hosting thousands of exam students, as they sit their tests over the next few days.

For the majority of Leaving Cert students, this will be the first time that they will be sitting a state exam since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Many missed out on an opportunity to take their exams when the Junior Cycle tests were cancelled in both 2020 and 2021.

The impact of the pandemic continues to linger for this year’s cohort, but not to the same extremes of recent years.

Any student who tests positive for Covid will have to stay at home from the exam centre for five days, from the date of their first symptom.

However, the HSE has confirmed that if a student has nasal symptoms (such as a runny nose or a sneeze) but otherwise feels well enough, they should still sit their exam.

A second sitting of the Leaving Cert will be available from June 29 to July 15, for any student who is forced to be absent due to a serious medical condition, a close family bereavement or a Covid diagnosis.

This year, Leaving Cert students will receive their results on August 25. The State Examinations Commission has promised students that there will be no “cliff-edge” fall from grade inflation in previous years, due to the Covid pandemic.

Many famous faces have wished students well with their exams, including Minister for Education Norma Foley.

“The hard work is done and will stand to you over the days and weeks ahead,” she stated.

We’re wishing every Junior and Leaving Cert student the best of luck!

Kate Ferdinand has been opening up about the complexities of being a blended family.

The former TOWIE star is currently just a few weeks away from welcoming a baby girl with her husband Rio Ferdinand.

The couple already share two-year-old son Cree together, alongside Rio’s three elder children – Lorenz (16), Tate (14) and Tia (12).

Credit: Kate Ferdinand Instagram

Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast Blended, Kate recorded a Q&A and was asked if the children are looking forward to meeting the new arrival.

“They’re not excited, I’ve got to be honest with you,” the 32-year-old teased. “They were excited at the beginning, and now it’s got to the stage where they’re just like, ‘Is the baby even coming? It’s been going on forever!’"

Another listener asked if they have introduced Cree to the knowledge that Kate is not the mother of his elder siblings.

Credit: Kate Ferdinand Instagram

The children's mother, Rebecca Ellison, tragically passed away in May 2015 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Kate went on to note that they had recently had this discussion as a family.

“We were talking about talking to Cree when we were on holiday. The kids said to me, ‘Do you think Cree knows that you’re not our mum?’, and I said, ‘I think he does,’ because we talk about her. We call her Mummy Beck-Bee,” Kate revealed.

“Tia said, ‘That’s your mummy, who is my mummy?’, and Cree said, ‘Mummy! Mummy is your mummy,’ so we’re not quite there,” she explained.

Credit: Kate Ferdinand Instagram

Kate admitted that it will take time for Cree to understand. “I actually thought he knew. I don’t know if I’m being a bit deluded because he’s only two years old, but it’s obviously just something that we have to keep talking about over time.”

“We’ve recently been saying over the last week, ‘I’m your mummy and Mummy Beck-Bee is Lorenz, Tate and Tia’s mummy,’ and I think he’s kind of getting it but it is all very confusing for him,” she concluded.

I’m a Celeb star Jordan Banjo and his wife Naomi have had quite a scary few days.

The Diversity dancer and his partner revealed their newborn son, Atreus, has been hospitalised after he experienced concerning symptoms.

Jordan and Naomi welcomed Atreus into the world in April, making them a family-of-five as they are already proud parents to four-year-old Cassius and three-year-old Mimi.

Opening up about their ‘traumatic’ week where they had to bring their newborn to A&E, Naomi explained the tot had been admitted to hospital with sepsis and suspected meningitis.

Credit: Naomi Banjo Instagram

Sharing details about the whole experience, Naomi posted a video of her cradling Atreus, set to the song How Precious You Are by Gilead, to her 196K Instagram followers.

She captioned the clip, “Ahh gosh, where do we start … in case your wondering where we’ve been, last week I took Atreus to A&E after feeling like something wasn’t right and he was immediately admitted with sepsis and suspected meningitis”.

“It’s been the most emotionally draining, frightening week of our lives. We’ve cried a lot, we’ve barely slept, and we’ve discussed the worst .. but we’ve carried each other through possibly one of the most traumatic weeks of our lives”.

Credit: Naomi Banjo Instagram

“You never think it would be your baby and honestly I can’t explain how awful it is having to leave your poorly baby behind in a hospital and go home and just be ‘mummy’ to your other children when inside your heart is breaking”.

Banjo continued, “We are so lucky we are able to alternate nights with Tre and the kids so we can share ourselves between all 3 kids and keep some normality for the bigger 2. It’s been tough but we’ve done our best for our babies. All we need now is our family back together where we belong”.

“We are over 5 days in and we finally have a stable temperature. Things are looking positive for Tre Tre and we are finally seeing an improvement”.

Credit: Naomi Banjo Instagram

The mum-of-three closed off by adding, “Our super brave strong boy has had all sorts of blood tests, a lumber puncture and constant prodding and poking this week but there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel and we cannot wait to get him home where he belongs. We still don’t really have answers and it’s another week ahead of antibiotics but he’s on the right path and we are just keeping positive”.

Naomi also mentioned Atreus’ symptoms, which included refusing to feed at night, rapid breathing, glossy eyes, very sleepy, cold hands and feet, mottled skin and a rash, among others.

According to the NHS, “Sepsis is life threatening. It can be hard to spot. There are lots of possible symptoms. They can be like symptoms of other conditions, including flu or a chest infection", while “Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord”.

Molly and her beau Tommy Fury were away in Barbados attending a wedding with their baby girl when their tot, whom they welcomed into the world in January, hit a new milestone.

Posting a snap of Bambi looking as cute as a button as she sat propped up against a pillow, Hague revealed, “Couldn’t have asked for an easier baby this trip. Literally the most incredibly behaved girl for her mama”.

The new mum closed off by adding, “It’s a pleasure to be your mum little one, thank you for being so amazing for me”.

While attending her pal's wedding, Molly acted as a bridesmaid and included Bambi in the big day by happily carrying the little one down the aisle with her.

Molly, Tommy and Bambi recently returned from their first-ever trip as a family-of-three after they headed off to Dubai in April.

When sharing snaps from the lovely family trip, the 24-year-old admitted being on holiday with her little one was the happiest she’s felt since welcoming her into the world.

Alongside poolside photos and pictures of the couple on board a boat with their daughter, Molly-Mae sweetly explained, “My happiest days since the day I gave birth to you”, before adding, “Our little girls first holiday”.

This June 8th is World Ocean Day 2023, an annual event that raises awareness about protecting our oceans and conserving marine resources for future generations. Covering over 70% of the Earth's surface, it regulates the climate and supports diverse marine life. Yet, oceans face immense threats, including plastic pollution that harms marine life and disrupts the delicate balance of marine habitats.

Irish seaweed-powered pet nutrition company Blue Pet Co. is inspired by the oceans and a mission to protect them. As a company committed to environmental stewardship, from World Ocean Day until June 30th, Blue Pet Co. will donate 1% of all sales directly to the non-profit organisation The Ocean Clean Up – a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic.

By choosing Blue Pet Co., not only will pet owners provide essential nutritional support for their dogs, but they will also contribute to the collective effort to tackle plastic pollution.

Everything Blue Pet Co. does is in the best interest of our oceans and planet. The Kerry-based blue biotech specialises in clean, marine-powered dog supplements enriched with seaweed extracts, designed to meet a dog’s health needs naturally and sustainably.

Not only is seaweed packed with key health and wellness benefits for dogs, but it’s also a secret weapon to climate change that captures more carbon than trees on a daily basis.

The business model operates as a circular economy whereby it hand-harvests and replants the seaweed used to create our marine-powered healthy dog supplements.

A signifier of the brand’s ongoing commitment to protecting the planet, Blue Pet Co. is also a 1% for the Planet member. The certification is given to businesses that commit to donating 1% of annual sales to environmental causes.

Developed by a team of marine scientists, Blue Pet Co.’s tasty chewable supplements GoShine, GoActive and GoSmile target critical areas of health concern in dogs – joints and muscles, skin and hair, teeth and gums.
