Yearly Archives: 2023

Dublin Simon Community today launched its 40th annual 5 mile “Home Run” with the help of some previous participants and supporters. The charity is calling on as many people as possible to join the movement by walking, jogging or running in the Phoenix Park on October 7th, to show solidarity with the record-breaking number of people experiencing homelessness today.

In 1983, The Dublin Simon Home Run (formerly “The Fun Run”) was established to support the vital work of Dublin Simon Community. For 40 years, the event has been pivotal in raising funds to provide emergency response, wraparound supports and forever homes to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Dublin and the surrounding counties. In 2021, the homeless charity supported 1,522 adults and children to move out of homelessness and provided forever homes for 857 people.

The Dublin Simon Home Run began as a 5-mile route, which has remained the same over the last 40 years and today amounts to approximately eight kilometers. While the charity is hopeful that this unique route length will be attractive to runners and joggers eager to test their limits, they are more keen to emphasise the event as a movement open to people of all abilities, with the hopes of seeing even more walkers joining in solidarity this year.

At the start line, participants can choose to follow signs for “runners”, “joggers” or “walkers”. Previous years have seen schools, walking clubs, parents with buggies, wheelchair users, elite runners, active retirement groups, corporate teams and many more all take part.

The Dublin Simon Home Run is a family-friendly event which starts at 9.30am at the Papal Cross Phoenix Park on Saturday 7th October. Family members and friends can cheer participants on from the sidelines, or meet them afterwards in the Dublin Simon tented village, which will feature food trucks, children’s entertainment and live music.

Dublin Simon Home Run Participants will be led in a group warm-up before being directed to the start line. All participants will receive sustainable wooden medals, with prizes awarded for winners alongside spot prizes throughout the morning.

Speaking at today’s Home Run 2023 launch, Dublin Simon Community CEO Catherine Kenny said:

“Over the last 40 years, we have seen what our community can do. We have seen that when staff, volunteers, donors and supporters come together, we can affect real change and help people to close the door on homelessness for good.

“As the number of people experiencing homelessness has continued to break grim new ground consistently over the last year, it’s important to remind all our stakeholders that together, we have been and are ending homelessness for people and families every single day.

“For that reason, we are calling on as many walkers, joggers, runners, buggies, dogs and more as possible to join us in the park on October 7th because the more people who show their solidarity on the day, the more lives we can change together as a community.”

Registration for the Dublin Simon Home Run is now live at www.dubsimon.ie/home-run with registration costing €15 as part of the earlybird offer until August 31st and €20 thereafter. Participants will also have the option upon registering to purchase the limited edition 40th Anniversary Dublin Simon Home Run t-shirt for an additional €15 or pay €5 for a lucky dip of past Home Run t-shirts.

All funds raised by the Dublin Simon Home Run will support Dublin Simon Community’s life-saving services which help vulnerable people in our community to close the door on homelessness for good.

Danielle Lloyd has opened up about her recent ‘horrendous’ health scare.

The model has revealed she ‘can’t stop crying’ after she was rushed to hospital as she experienced heavy bleeding.

Danielle, who is a mum-of-five, has bravely shared details about her ‘heartbreaking’ health scare as she awaits test results to see if she has cancer.

Credit: Danielle Lloyd Instagram

Speaking to OK!, Danielle revealed she recently had heavy bleeding and suspected she may be having a miscarriage and was rushed to A&E to figure out what was happening.

To Danielle’s shock, doctors told her she had not experienced a miscarriage, but had cysts on both of her ovaries, with ‘one the size of a tennis ball’, as well as a thickened lining of the womb.

The 39-year-old had to undergo tests for endometrial cancer due to her symptoms and awaits the results as she faces having to have a hysterectomy depending on what her tests say.

The former Miss Great Britain model admitted, “When you hear the word cancer, you just think, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die’”.

“I just can’t stop crying and have said to Michael, ‘I don’t want to leave my kids’. I’m trying to stay positive for them, but it’s been horrendous. I’m sat here every day thinking, ‘Am I going to be OK?’”.

Speaking more about the emotions she’s been feeling since her health scare, Danielle revealed, “I’ll be driving down the road and then burst into tears. I just feel like an emotional wreck and it’s exhausting”.

“It was one of the kids’ birthday parties over the weekend and I woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a bus, knowing I’d have to act normal. I thought, ‘How am I going to do this?’, But as a mum, you just have to get on with it”.

The mum-of-five then spoke about the prospects of having more children in the future.

Credit: Danielle Lloyd Instagram

“The doctor has advised me not to have any more children and whatever the results, I have thickening of the womb, which can eventually lead to cancer anyway”.

“I’ve spoken to a few friends and they were like, ‘Oh God, are you ready to go through menopause?’ But at the end of the day, I do have five kids, which I’m thankful for”.

“In some ways it is heartbreaking; I sometimes can’t imagine never having a little baby again”.

Danielle is mum to 13-year-old Archie, 12-year-old Harry and nine-year-old Georgie from a previous relationship. She is also mum to five-year-old Ronnie and 20-month-old Autumn with her husband Michael.

Tributes have been paid to a young Indian mother after she was murdered in her own home.

Deepa Dinamani (38) died on Friday evening (July 14), after she was discovered with serious stab injuries at her home in Cardinal Court estate in Wilton, Co. Cork.

Deepa, who was a chartered accountant and a mother to her five-year-old son, had only moved to Ireland three months ago.

The mother-of-one was originally from the south Indian province of Kerala, and had been living and working in Cork.

A concerned friend found Deepa during a visit to her home, after she failed to show up to collect her son from a summer camp.

Tragically, despite consistent efforts by emergency services and paramedics, Deepa was pronounced dead at her home.

Her husband, Regin Parithapara Rajan (41), has since been charged with her murder, and appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday (Sunday, July 16).

Following the hearing, he was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via video-link this Thursday.

Yesterday evening, a vigil was held in Cork by over 150 members of the Indian community, to show their support for the Dinamani family and to condemn violence.

A framed photo of Deepa was laid out alongside flowers, tea lights and candles, and prayers were said for her loved ones.

“May they find strength, courage and peace in the midst of this immense loss,” a spokesperson for the Cork Pravasi Malayali Association noted.

A post mortem examination of Deepa’s body has been carried out by State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan, but its results have not yet been released by Gardaí for operational reasons.

The young mother’s family remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Dublin following her heartbreaking death.

Wedding bells will soon be ringing!

Ben Platt and his fiancé Noah Galvin are preparing for their big day.

The Dear Evan Hansen star has opened up about the plans they have in place for their upcoming wedding day.

The couple, who had a double engagement with Ben proposing first back in November of 2022, and Noah returning the question in May, have revealed they want their wedding day to be full of dancing.

While speaking to People, Noah explained, “What's most important about the big day is dance!”, before Ben added, “Yes, our priority is definitely a dance party”.

“Our main focus is how to orchestrate the evening so that as little time as possible can be spent doing anything other than dancing. It’s a dance party with a little Judaism at the beginning”.

As well as wanting plenty of dancing, the grooms-to-be are focused on good food and a pretty venue.

Noah, who also starred in the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen, revealed a goal for their wedding guests is to “just have the most fun possible”.

“Making sure everybody's fed with some yummy food. Making sure everybody's in a beautiful space wearing a cute outfit – but something comfortable.”

Platt then shared, “Yeah, it's gonna be hot”, but said that won’t stop the couple and their guests from dancing. “I think that's how we express our joy and that's how we always have”.

Opening up about their double engagement, which was planned ahead of time, Galvin admits, “What's fun about being gay is that everybody gets to eat, you know, everybody gets an engagement”.

Platt revealed he had always planned to propose to Noah first. “He said, ‘You should propose to me’, and I was like, ‘I was gonna’”.

The Pitch Perfect star also explained that he liked the idea of having his own engagement ring, which added to their decision to both propose to each other separately. “He has such a pretty ring and I wanted a pretty ring!”.

The lovebirds first met while being cast in Dear Evan Hansen back in 2016 but didn’t begin their relationship until January 2020.

Ferne McCann has finally announced her newborn’s name to the world.

Ferne and her fiancé Lorri Haines welcomed the birth of their first child together, a baby girl, on July 6.

The former The Only Way is Essex star is already mum to five-year-old Sunday from a previous relationship, while Lorri has a son from before he met Ferne also.

The 32-year-old held off on revealing her daughter’s name until today, when she revealed the very unique moniker in an interview with OK!

Sharing that she and her family are “all just so happy” with their “chilled-out girl”, Ferne announced her bundle of joy is named Finty Francis Haines-McCann.

Detailing how she chose the rare name and its meaning, Ferne explains, “It was on my name list when I gave birth to Sunday. I don’t know where I got it from, but when I typed it in [on Google] I saw Judi Dench’s daughter’s nickname is Finty. I’ve always loved it and never heard it anywhere else before”.

“I just feel so connected to the name – she came out and she was just Finty. I think she sounds like a character out of Bridgerton”.

Credit: Ferne McCann Instagram

Speaking about her little one’s middle name, the reality TV star said, “Francis is my grandad’s name – it’s a nod to Grandad Frank”.

Ferne, who didn’t find out her baby’s gender while pregnant, then admitted she loved the names she had in mind so much, she was hopeful her baby would be a girl- and it turns out she was!

“I wanted a girl for that reason. I was quite honest about wanting a girl. Throughout my pregnancy, and this is no disrespect to all the boy mums out there, I just had a preference and I couldn’t see myself with a boy”.

“I see myself as the Essex Kris Jenner with this army of girls and after having Finty, I reckon I could have two more. I’d have another one tomorrow!”.

Credit: Ferne McCann Instagram

McCann revealed baby Finty was 7lbs and 1oz when she made her arrival into the world a week early.

“I got the home birth I wanted – however it’s nothing like how I imagined and it didn’t go to plan”. The plan went out the window. My life never goes to plan, so you’ve just got to go with it”.

More details and footage of Ferne’s home birth will be shared in the next series of her ITVBe show First Time Mum.

“I filmed it all for the show, which I’m so excited about. I just can’t wait to share that. But she’s perfect and she’s here”.

Kate Ferdinand has given birth to her second child, a baby girl, with husband Rio.

The former TOWIE star, 32, and ex footballer, 44, announced the arrival of their bundle of joy via Instagram, six days after the birth on Monday. She also revealed the newborn's name in the caption and gushed about how 'strong' she is doing. The TV personality wrote: 'Shae Ferdinand. 10.7.23 Our strong little girl'.

In addition to being a mother to their two-year-old son Cree, Kate is also a stepmother to Rio's children Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 12 – whom he shared with his late wife Rebecca Ellison before she died of breast cancer in 2015, at the age of just 34.

Kate is mum to son Cree, two and
stepmum to Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14 and Tia, 12

Kate has kept her 1.4 million followers up-to-date throughout her second pregnancy, sharing several glamorous baby bump photos. In June, Kate revealed on Loose Women that her baby girl was in a breech position. A breech birth occurs when a baby is naturally born bottom-first or feet-first instead of head-first, and it affects around three to four per cent of pregnancies in the UK. Kate explained, 'Can I tell the truth, the baby is breech. She is kicking me in the ribs and on my bladder.'

Earlier this month, Kate shared some selfies of herself with Rio and their son Cree in the gym, where she had to cut down on her walking and gym routine as she neared her due date. She flaunted her baby bump in a fitted black vest top and coordinated leggings, which she paired with grey fluffy slippers. In an accompanying caption, Kate jokingly mentioned that she had gone to the gym with Rio only for 'selfie purposes', rather than a workout. She wrote, 'Good morning. Don't be fooled by the gym picture & clothes, I was there for selfie purposes only.'

Kate also posted a snap of herself during an early morning dog walk, revealing that she had to shorten her walks due to her pregnancy. Alongside the selfie, she wrote, 'True dog walker with the lead around me. Ronnie's walks have gone down to 25-30 minutes, he's not too impressed, but that's my limit at the moment.'

At the end of June, Kate recorded the final episode of her Blended podcast with Rio before going on maternity leave. She expressed her gratitude for the support she received and mentioned her excitement for her baby girl's arrival. She said, 'For a really long time, I wanted to start this, but just didn't have the confidence. It's only sometimes when you take a minute to reflect that you can see how far you have come. Thank you for all of your continued support, it really does mean the world to me! Now time to rest & reset for the baby. To listen, search Blended wherever you get your podcasts.'

Kate recorded the final Blended podcast with Rio before maternity leave

In January, Kate and Rio revealed that they were expecting their second baby together, six months after experiencing a heartbreaking miscarriage. The former TV personality shared a video clip on Instagram, showing her prominent baby bump. Captioning the post, she wrote, 'We've been praying for you.'

In March, the couple announced that they were expecting a baby girl. They decided to have a gender reveal, but it didn't go as planned, with Kate choking on a cupcake. The reality star recounted the incident, saying, 'It's a girl, guys – we are so excited we're having a girl. We both guessed the same. Lorenz guessed that.' Despite the mishap, the couple was thrilled about welcoming a daughter.

'It's a girl': In March, the couple threw a gender reveal

Kate also opened up about the challenges she faced during her pregnancies, as she sometimes felt that Rio wasn't as excited due to his previous experience with fatherhood. She mentioned that they had arguments and disagreements, but ultimately they found a way to understand and support each other.

Sadly, in July 2022, Kate experienced a miscarriage shortly after discovering she was pregnant with her second child. She shared the emotional journey on her Blended podcast, recounting the moments leading up to the devastating news and the aftermath of the loss. She expressed the difficulty of grieving a loss that is not visible to others and the impact it had on her and her family.

Congratulations Kate and Rio – we hope you enjoy every moment.
