Calling all Irish musicians!

Other Voices are offering one talented act the chance to perform at the famous Dingle music festival this December.

Applicants are invited to send in samples of their work through the new eir Other Voices Open Call system, and Dublin band, Le Galaxie, are urging musicians to avail of this “incredible opportunity.”

The chosen act will enjoy an all expenses paid trip to Dingle where they will have the opportunity to perform at the IMRO Other Room, which has previously featured artists such as James Vincent McMorrow, Villagers and Rusango Family.

The winner will also be given a three-day studio session as well as the budget and resources to film their very own music video.

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Le Galazie's Dave McLaughlin said: "It's incredible, just the idea that all you have to do is put your music forward, it's not a competition per se, it's almost like a Booker Prize.”

"So it's incredible to think that a band starting out now, who has their chops together, that you're going to have access to that kind of platform."

Sound like you? Entries are open now at www.othervoices.ie/content/open-call and will close at 6pm on September 22.

Before there was The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Jacqueline Wilson or even the Goosebumps series, there were Roald Dahl's classics.

The iconic children's author passed away in 1990, but his legacy is remembered on this day every year (and everyday, when a child opens one of his books for the first time).

To celebrate Roald Dahl day, we here at SHEmazing HQ reflected on our experience with reading the works of the whimsical author:

'The Twits was and is still my favourite.'

'I remember thinking it was hilarious as a kid when my dad read it to me. Now reading it to my son he thinks it's gas.'

'Quentin Blake's illustrations made me want to be an illustrator… they still do,' Kate Dwyer, Senior Graphic Designer

'My mantra in life:'

'Roald Dahl was the first author I fell in love with as a child. I got a five-book collection one Christmas when I was about 6 or 7, and was practically slobbering at the thought of getting my hands on his other ones.'

'I had been reading books set in the English countryside by the likes of Enid Blyton and while I had always enjoyed them, the edge in Roald Dahl's writing was so much more engaging. Knowing my parents would laugh out loud at certain passages in his books bridged a gap between myself and the older generation.'

'His irreverent approach to children's literature was so left-field, I literally became obsessed. In fact, I inadvertently elevated him to the realm of the mythical, so when I was shown a photo of a normal looking, grey-haired man one day and told it was Roald Dahl, I was dumbfounded. '

'I couldn't believe pages upon pages of magic had been created by this oul lad, and it probably made me all the more appreciative of his writing.' – Niamh McClelland, SHEmazing Editor

'I loved all the books but I had a particular soft spot for Danny the Champion of the world. I loved how close the dad and son were, it was really cute.'

'They had so many adventures together and it wasn't a conventional parent-child relationship.' – Edel Hughes, MummyPages journalist.

'As kids, we used to read all of the Roald Dahl books – they were my fave!'

'I personally loved The Twits and George's Marvellous Medicine.'

'The books were just so descriptive and full of mischief! And I just loved the imagery as a kid!'

'We have actually dug the books out of the attic to start reading them to my five year old niece.' Niamh Maher, Digital Marketing Executive

'I loved The Twits – mostly fascinated about their dirty beards. I used to stare at other peoples beards as a child in disgust.'

'Witches scared the life out of me – especially when they removed their wigs, and every little girl wanted to be Matilda with her superpowers.' – Amanda Cassidy, MummyPages Editor

'I always felt I knew a Roald Dahl book would be an adventure. He had a unique way of creating a different world and reading his books allowed me to be part of it.'

'The books were always very easy for me to read  and I can't remember a time when I didn't race through his books, totally engrossed in the story.'

'I look forward to a day when I have my own kids and can get swept up into Roald Dahl's world all over again.'

'My three favourite books were George's Marvellous Medicine, James and the Giant Peach and The BFG.' – Alannah O'Sullivan, Client Services Executive

'I was always obsessed with reading as a child, I was the kind of kid who had to be told every night that it was rude to read at the dinner table.'

'I remember getting my first block of Dahl's books, all pastel coloured in their thick yellow sleeve, and devouring them all in the space of a week. I perused that pale yellow box of books that I kept on my windowsill for many years, always going back to my firm favourites The Witches and Boy: Tales of Childhood.'

'Dahl's work was unique compared to the work of most children's writers, and the quaint manner in which the startling tales were told kept me hooked through every paragraph.'

'Seeing as I was born in 1994, Dahl had already passed by the time I was old enough to clutch one of his illustrated novels in my sticky paws, but his books will remain completely timeless as parents pass their dusty, sun bleached yellow boxes down to their own children (and maybe have a sneaky read of The BFG every now and again).' – Sarah Magliocco, SHEmazing journalist

A television news reporter, who described herself as a 'chunky girl' while braving the wrath of Hurricane Irma, was met with the a reassuring response from her colleague this week.

Sara Sinder, a reporter for CNN, was broadcasting live from Florida when she used her size to demonstrate just how strong the winds were.

She told news anchor, Don Lemon: “What we’re also seeing is a lot of projectiles, you’ve been hearing from everyone that that’s the danger here. The things that cover the lights are flying around. The tops of trash cans flying around.”

“And this wind — I am not a small woman, as you know, Don. I am a chunky girl, and it is blowing me around when the gusts come really, really hard.”

Back in studio, Don wasn't impressed with Sara's self-deprecating comments and as soon as the camera cut back, he offered this advice: “You’re a beautiful woman no matter what size you are. There’s nothing wrong with having a little curve.”

Of course, the clip quickly went viral and it's safe to say Twitter has a bit of a mixed reaction.

While most people praised Don for his response…

… some weren't quite on the same page.

Daily Show host Trevor Noah also criticised the clip saying: “Okay, that was a bit weird because, uh… Don Lemon, that report said nothing about being beautiful… I wished the camera would have cut back to Sara to respond like, ‘Yeah Don, I never said I wasn’t beautiful.’"

Rebel Wilson has been awarded over €3 million (A$4.56m) in damages after articles published in a popular magazine made false accusations about the Australian actress.

The articles falsely claimed that Rebel had lied about her age, the origins of her first name and her Sydney upbringing, so that she could make it in Hollywood.

As a result, the Pitch Perfect star missed out on several film roles and other career opportunities.

Bauer Media, publisher of Woman's Day magazine, was found guilty of defamation after Justice John Dixon said it had failed to show the claims made against the actress had any substance.

According to Rebel's lawyers, the amount awarded is the “largest defamation damages award in Australian legal history.”

Rebel took to Twitter to express her relief after a “long hard court battle” and insisted the case “wasn't about the money.”

The actress went on to say how she would use the money help a number of charities as well as support the Australian film industry.

She finished by thanking her fans for their love and support and revealed she was looking forward to getting back to her career.

When Zayn Malik made the decision to leave One Direction back in 2015, fans were stunned that the Bradford-native would choose to turn his back on the biggest boyband in the world.

And while the singer insisted that he simply felt his time with the band had come to an end and a solo career beckoned, rumours have circulated in recent years that all was not well in the 1D camp in the months leading up to Zayn's departure.

Indeed, Louis Tomlinson recently revealed that his late mother had encouraged him to rebuild his friendship with Zayn following his shock departure, saying: "I can’t stand to hold a grudge with anyone. It doesn’t sit with me right."

"I would always see the good in Zayn and also watch him shoot himself in the foot with some of his decisions, but he’s just a little misunderstood," Louis added at the time.

However, it doesn't seem like Zayn shared the same friendship with other members of the group, telling Us Weekly that he didn't expect to see much of Harry after leaving the group.

Speaking of his former bandmates, he said: "We're in touch. Everything is on a civil level."

"It's not the way it used to be, obviously, because we were spending 24 hours a day in the band and now we're growing as individual men, but we still check in."

The 24-year-old singer then turned his attention to Harry, revealing: "To be honest, I never really spoke to Harry even when I was in the band. So I didn't really expect that much of a relationship with him."

We wonder what Harry would say about this one…

Nearly four years after iconic actor Paul Walker was killed in a tragic car accident, his daughter is paying homage to him on his birthday.

'Share a video or photo of your random act of kindness and nominate 4 people to join the challenge!'

As the controversy surrounding George Hook continues to intensify, Pat Kenny has appeared to defend his colleague, by insisting the rugby pundit is genuinely contrite.

"I listened to his apology and he meant it, he is genuinely contrite. He is devastated by this. He realises what he said didn't come out right and accepts that some people were hurt," Kenny reasoned.

While insisting he wasn't defending the comments made by Hook, Pat argued that they were not a fair reflection of the radio host.

"The comments are not reflective of him. He is a decent man with children and was musing over a topic," Pat argued.

"He has entertained people for 13 years and it would be sad that people would take his mis-speaking on the radio as the real representation of George the man."

Earlier this week, while appearing on The Hard Shoulder with Ivan Yates, Irish singer, Mary Coughlan, protested against Yates' colleague by walking out of the interview.

The folk singer was being interviewed by Ivan about her upcoming tour when she chose to cut the interview short in response to Hook's recent remarks about rape.

The 61-year-old singer told Ivan that her decision to suspend the interview was nothing personal, but a response to his Newstalk colleague's controversial comments.

Commenting on her decision to terminate her appearance on the show, Mary told The Independent insisted the veteran broadcaster should be dismissed by the station.

"This isn’t the first time Hook has made comments such as these. The comments have absolutely no respect for the victims of abuse in this country."

"His comments were completely disparaging and there are even some comments in his book which I find similar,” she said. "He should be fired for God’s sake."

Yesterday it was reported that up to 20 members of Newstalk staff have drafted a letter of protest and are calling for him to be taken off air, though it's believed it was not formally handed to management.
