Yearly Archives: 2016

The new series of Celebrity Big Brother kicks off early next week, and the latest confirmed contestant hails from Irish shores.

Former Bohs and Shelbourne player and self-confessed ladies' man Jeremy McConnell will join this year's lot of housemates, it was revealed this evening.

Dubliner Jeremy, who dated Holly Carpenter for over a year in his teens, once claimed to have slept with "all the models in Ireland," so he'll no doubt have a lot to say on that subject on the show.

Jeremy will join Gemma Collins, Spencer Matthews, David Gest, and Kim Kardashian's bestie Jonathan Cheban for the new series of CBB, which kicks off next Tuesday December 5.

He'll be the first Irish contestant to take part since B*Witched's Edele Lynch in August 2014.

As well as his modelling work, the tattooed Irishman also starred in the 2013 MTV reality show Beauty School Cop Outs.

He describes himself as a "flirt and a charmer" and according to his Beauty School Cop Outs bio he hates "judgmental, stuck up, power crazy people and… bitchiness."

Sounds like he'll have a tough time in the CBB house, so…

Christmas is over, the first day of a new year has arrived, and so it must be time to start buying Easter eggs.

No, in fact, it's not time. It's definitely not time. But according to some wily retailers, January 1 is the perfect point of the year to start thinking about a holiday that's still three months away.

Shoppers in the UK and Ireland have reported seeing Easter eggs in various supermarkets, and they've taken to Twitter to offer evidence of this MADNESS.

Just to clarify, March 27 is a full 85 days from today.

One shopper was even subjected to this awful juxtaposition:

Speaking earlier this week to the Daily Mail about the decision to stock the themed chocolate so early, Tesco said, "In response to demand from customers who like to buy them early, we are offering a limited range of Easter chocolates in selected stores.

"Our full range does not go into our stores until later in January."

Creme Egg, anyone?

Having eaten our way through the festive season, our thoughts reluctantly turn to 2016 and the uphill diet struggle that lies ahead.

Of course, there's always a plus side – the one here being that, no matter what happens, we'll never have to survive on water and cayenne pepper like poor Beyoncé.

Celebrities have gone to some fairly extreme lengths to achieve their red-carpet worthy bodies – it seems having iron-cast willpower is a prerequisite for an A-lister.

Here's a look at some of the more bizarre celebrity eating regimes…

The Master Cleanse
What it is: Lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water are mixed into a special drink, of which almost two litres must be consumed every day. This is combined with a special laxative tea to keep things moving.

Celeb fans: Beyoncé famously used this diet to shed the pounds for her role in Dreamgirls, and again before her appearance at the 20015 Met Gala.

The Baby Food Diet
What it is: One of more meals a day is substituted for baby food, which in theory seems like it could be a good idea. After all, food intended for babies is probably super-healthy, right? Yes, but it's also devoid of taste and texture.

Celeb fans: Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have reportedly given this faddy diet a go.

The M-Plan
What it is: One meal a day is swapped for a mushroom-based substitute, apparently helping you to lose excess weight around your tummy, thighs, upper arms and bottom, while maintaining your curves.

Celeb fans: Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne are both M-Plan fans.

The Alkaline Diet
What it is: Alkaline dieters avoid acid-producing foods that can cause the body to stress out. Recipes on the alkaline programme are mainly based on fresh fruit and vegetables, while coffee, junk food, sugar, salt and alcohol are major no-no's.

Celeb fans: Victoria Beckham reportedly swears by this eating plan.

The Blood Type Diet
What it is: This diet, created by naturopath Peter D'Adamo, is based on the suggestion that particular foods have different chemical reactions depending on our blood type. For example, those with Type A blood should avoid meat altogether, while Type B can eat certain meats.

Celeb fans: Miranda Kerr (a Type A, doncha know) follows this regime to keep her catwalk queen figure in check.

It's been a year-long break-up song battle between Taylor Swift and Harry Styles, but we may finally have a winner.

Fans of the former couple, who dated back in 2012, will know that they have been not-so subtly taking digs at one another this year through various song lyrics – and Taylor's just taken things to the next level.

The video for her newest 1989 single, Out Of The Woods – a song inspired by her ill-fated romance with Harry – was released last night, and eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot one thing.

Taylor's blue dress, which she wears for the duration of the video, is almost identical to the one she wore on the day she split from Harry back in 2013. Subtle, but totally effective.

The pair ended their romance dramatically with a blow-out argument on the British Virgin Islands this week three years ago, with Taylor getting a boat back to the mainland by herself while Harry stayed behind to party with friends.

Of course, the paps had a field day with the 'Lonely Taylor On A Boat' photos, all featuring Taylor in that blue dress.

Speaking about the story behind the song's lyrics earlier this year, Taylor admitted that "anxiety" is the main feeling she remembers from the relationship.

"It felt very fragile. It felt very tentative. It felt like, OK, what's the next road block?" she explained.

Hopefully the video marks the end of all the tension, now that Taylor's found happiness with Calvin Harris, and Harry seems to be moving on with none other than Kendall Jenner.

Wedding bells are on the way for Irish TV presenter Amanda Byram.

The 42-year-old took to Twitter last night to share some very happy news with fans, shortly after returning home from a Christmas holiday in Argentina and Chile with her boyfriend Julian Okines.

"Back on home soil after the adventure of a lifetime… Oh… and #GotEngaged!" she wrote, sharing a holiday snap of her holding a glass of Argentinian vino while flashing her engagement ring.

Amanda has been dating London-based TV producer Julian for around two years, calling him "absolutely brilliant" and her "partner in crime."

And if the Irish star's Instagram feed is anything to go by, it wasn't just the proposal that made her recent South America trip the holiday of a lifetime.

"So that's it, after 12 flights, countless hikes, bikes, buses and treks through rain, wind, sun and snow. 20,000 miles from UK across Chile and Argentina into forests, over glaciers, past icebergs. Today the road home begins," she wrote yesterday alongside a collage of holiday snaps.

The Dubliner has spoken before about the possibility of starting a family, though she says she is willing to leave things up to fate.

"I'm fit, I'm healthy, there are no problems in that sense," she said of her hopes of having kids.

"So who knows? It's in the hands of the gods."

Today marks the start of 2016, and while we wish we were ready to embrace the New Year, we probably need a few more hours to nurse our hangover first.

The same is most likely true for some big Irish names who rang in 2016 in style last night. Of course, not everyone hit the town – for some stars, it was a very low-key evening indeed.

Here's how a few of our faves celebrated the big night…

Ronan Keating  and Storm Uechtritz
The newlyweds headed to Verbier in Switzerland for a skiiing holiday with Ronan's children Ali, Jack and Missy, where they celebrated midnight with some aprés-ski action.

Rosanna Davison
Jealous face in place. Rosanna and her husband Wes Quirke took a post-Christmas holiday in Mauritius, where they've been soaking up the sun for the last few days. The model donned a stunning green dress from the H&M X BALMAIN collection for last night's celebrations *swoon*

Laura Whitmore
The MTV host rang in 2016 from New York, where she partied with her new rocker boyfriend Rory Williams and a gang of pals including her long-time friend Samantha Barry.

Georgia Salpa
New mum Georgia looked utterly stunning last night, but she told fans she had a low key evening, choosing to watch "the fireworks at home with my boys" – which not only includes her husband Joe Penna but the pair's new twin sons.

Vogue Williams
After admitting earlier this week that 2015 had been a "very tough year" for her, Vogue seemed to keep things calm last night, opting for a night in with these two:

Rozanna Purcell
Like many of us, Roz is starting 2016 with clean eating intentions, so it's fitting that she rounded off the year with a major treat. "Just before the new year starts getting an ultimate @moochfroyo00 kinder buenos sauce and smashed Oreo….. Over peanut butter soft serve froyo," she wrote on Instagram next to a snap of the decadent creation.

A tiny terrace fire overtook an entire skyscraper in Dubai yesterday evening, with thousands fleeing for safety as The Address Hotel went up in flames.

It's thought 16 people were injured in the fire, which took 3.5 hours to be put under control. Original reports suggested one person had died in the blaze but this was not officially confirmed.

The entire left side of the 63-storey hotel, which is located near the famous Burj Khalifa, was destroyed when the fire broke out around 5.30pm local time yesterday.

This photo shows what's believed to be the origin of the blaze – a small fire on a covered terrace on a lower part of the building.

Earlier this morning, smoke could still be seen pouring from the building, which thankfully did not collapse in the fire.

Irishman Kenneth Flynn told The Telegraph how he briefly got lost from his girlfriend in the chaos as people tried to escape the burning building.

"I went outside to have a look and by the time I walked out the whole building was just ablaze. The heat was so intense outside.

"By the time I came back in I had lost her [his girlfriend] because the whole place was in panic and people were crushing each other trying to get out and get down the stairs and jumping over railings, I couldn’t believe how fast it actually happened."

Hendall is for real, people.

After we reported yesterday that Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles were planning to ring in the New Year together with a vaction in Antigua, now it seems the holiday is more than just a chance for two friends to catch up.

The young stars were pictured getting very cosy on a yacht off the coast of the Caribbean island yesterday, with various paparrazzi shots showing them looking far more flirty than we've ever seen them:

Wow.

Kendall and Harry were previously linked for a brief few months in 2013 and 2014, but neither party confirmed the relationship at the time.

Considering how wild fans went after seeing this picture of the pair just smiling at each other during this year's British Fashion Awards, we reckon today's new snaps will have sent some 1D lovers into meltdown mode.

Sorry, ladies.

When someone says they "love" to exercise, it’s 100% natural to think they are either lying through their teeth or just a bit, well, weird. But the great thing about working out is, the more you do it and the fitter you get, the more enjoyable it becomes.

While it might take time to make a habit out of exercise, it’s worth it in the end. Not only does it become so much easier to motivate yourself to get off that couch, but you’ll really start seeing the long-term benefits, too.

Here are a few tips to get you on the road to being a proud convert!

1. Be prepared
Do yourself a favour and plan ahead – lay out your exercise gear the night before, plan your running route or know what you’ll do at the gym, and decide on your meals. If your workout is generally in the morning, allow yourself an extra 15-20 minutes to comfortably fit everything in.

2. Don’t give up just yet
They say three weeks is what it takes to make a habit out of something, but everyone is different. Setting a fitness goal such as a 10k race or a personal best is a great way to stay on track.

3. Try different things
So that Zumba class was going well, until you kicked the girl beside you in the face. Everyone has their fitness niche, and you may need to try a few different things before you discover what fits. Maybe team sports motivate you, or perhaps you prefer jogging because it give you time to clear your head.

4. Don’t skip more than two days in a row
Ever notice that you’re super-motivated for the first few days of a new exercise routine, until life suddenly gets in the way? Make an exercise plan that is easy to stick to – if you’re often busy in the evenings then slot your workout in each morning or vice versa. Skipping one or two days is fine – everyone needs a rest – but try not to let it go any more than that.

5. Pace yourself
A surefire way to ruin your exercise plan is to tire yourself out or injure yourself at the first hurdle. Know your limits, especially if you’re new to exercise or haven’t had a fitness routine in a while. Map out a realistic routine with someone who knows their stuff, like a trainer or gym instructor.
