So you have the gorgeous new nail varnish, the top coat and all the other bits and bobs… but your nails are still short, broken and generally looking a bit crap. What's a gal to do?

Irish beauty blogger Deirdre Foley of Viva Adonis is a cosmetics addict and nail care fanatic, and we chased her down for a few tips on getting the perfect at-home manicure.

Here goes…

I've tried everything, but my nails just won't grow. What am I doing wrong?
As far as I can make out, nail growth is down to health, genes, and just a little bit of luck. Mine are generally okay – they grow faster in the summer, but can be a lot more brittle and thin come winter. The best strengthener I’ve used has to be OPI Nail Envy, €21.95 from Cloud10Beauty and Boots. This has been my base coat of choice for many years, and I always miss it when it runs out.

What’s the best nail routine to follow?
Good tools are a must – a glass file, clippers, and buffers. Hit up your local chemist or salon supplier like Terrisales, Flair or Sally’s to get the goods.

Soaking nails & cuticles in warm water and then using a cuticle remover like the gel one from Sally Hansen is a great way to make your nails look that little bit more tidy and groomed.  Regular use of Clarins hand cream & CND Solar Oil will also go a long way towards softer, healthier hands and nail beds.

I've been thinking about acrylics. Should I go for it or are they a big no-no?
They're fine the odd time. Too much of anything is rarely good news. I have friends that have been horribly addicted to acrylics, and the results haven’t been pretty. If your nails are in a serious state, it could be worth investing in the Micro Nail, an electronic buffer that will leave bare nails looking seriously shiny and healthy without the need for polish. Leaving nails bare for a while, with the odd top-up of Nail Envy or a similar product, should speed up the recovery process.

I love gel polish as you get the longevity without quite as much damage. A good Shellac or Gelish manicure shouldn’t punish nails too much – just remember not to pick it off! Make sure to get it removed professionally or else DIY with some acetone and tinfoil.

Us Irish girls love our MAC. Did you know that the Grafton St store is one of the world’s busiest?! Yep, it’s up there with Macy’s in NYC… seems like nothing can come between an Irish girl and her Studio Fix!

We love MAC for so many reasons – the shade ranges, the sleek packaging, the fact that there’s always a new collection to ogle over with each visit. I’ve always been mad for their limited edition stuff (Disney Villains, anyone?!)

The regular line is full of gems, too – here’s 5 classics you must try.

Mineralise Skinfinish Natural is one of the most fantastic powders out there – whether you’re oily or dry, chances are you’ll get on famously with this. It’s not a flat matte, isn’t drying and never cakes – plus one of these compacts lasts forever and a day. Score.

It is quite literally impossible to choose just one MAC lipstick, so let’s go with one nude and one bold. On the more subtle side, Patisserie is a total crowd-pleaser. It’s a neutral shade that isn’t too opaque or pale – the lustre formula means it blends nicely with your own natural lip colour.
For a statement lip, Lady Danger is an incredibly striking warm red. Perfect for summer, it’s  a full-on shade that won’t dry lips out like some retro mattes can.

Warm Soul blush is another one of those products that just about anyone can use. It’s a beautiful warm neutral shade with a really fine shimmer that works equally well as a highlight on deeper skintones.

Into contouring? Forget any palette – Harmony powder blush is all you really need. It’s the perfect shade to cast a convincing shadow and carve out cheekbones on even the pales of faces.

For covering a multitude of sins (and then some), Pro Longwear concealer is an absolute gem. A super-pigmented liquid formula, this stuff simply Does. Not. Budge! Perfect for long days in the office.

One of the first pieces I wrote for this site was about my rather worrying Kylie Jenner obsession. As a (somewhat) well-balanced 25-year-old who never really got into the Kardashians way back in the beginning, I fell hard and fast for the Kylie craze.

Fast forward six months, and my opinions of the youngest Jenner have matured to say the least.

The main appeal that Kylie originally held for me was her grungy aesthetic. Last year, her style appeared far more relaxed than that of any of her sisters – and always with a tougher edge. I was all about her look; the leather, the lipstick, and most importantly, the lipliner.

Since last year, though, her style has made a rapid progression from tough to, well, aggressively provocative. Take the Coachella outfit from last weekend – it was far closer to being a ridiculous cry for attention than an actual fashion statement of any description.

It’s funny that Kylie’s youthfulness was both what drew me in and eventually turned me off.

There’s no doubt that she is ridiculously spoiled and doesn’t lead the life of an average teenager, but the snippets we’ve seen of Kylie’s behaviour on KUWTK also show a slightly uglier side to her personality. It’s one that we can all identify with to some extent – that shrugging, IDGAF teenage attitude that we can all remember displaying at some time or another.

Kylie’s problems in one of the latest episodes were decidedly more ‘first world’ than any of mine ever were as a teenager. Throwing a strop over a free trip to San Diego, anyone?!

After a no-show from Kylie at a family day out, her mum Kris seemed genuinely frustrated, saying: “Every time she seems to get mad at somebody she punishes them by not showing up.” They didn’t speak for a fortnight – I was lucky if I got to two hours not speaking to my mother growing up!

Despite all of my bitter misgivings, I can’t be 100% over Kylie Jenner. How do I know? Well, I’ve yet to hit the ‘unfollow’ button, and this tweet of hers from back in February still has me full of intrigue…

Hands up who’s with me?

Eyeshadow palettes are some of the most hyped products on the beauty market. With each brand shouting louder than the next, it’s quite hard to know what’s worth handing over your hard-earned cash for. Writing about beauty means that I’ve had the uber-difficult task of trying as many palettes as humanly possible over the past few years.

Here, I’m breaking it down into some of my recent picks, as well as all-time favourites…

The Classic
Urban Decay Naked Basics, €30 from Debenhams

Skip the hype over Naked 1, 2 and 3 and keep it simple with the Naked Basics palette. It’s small, it’s portable and, if you like your makeup to be simple and streamlined, you will love this. The paler shades are great for opening up the eyes and the darker crease colours also double up as brilliant shades for filling in brows. Oh, and that deep, matte black? Brilliant as a smokey liner!

The Newbie
Smashbox Double Exposure, €39.60 from Arnotts and larger Boots stores

This is the brand’s second neutral palette. The first, Full Exposure, didn’t quite do it for me as the shimmery shades were a little too heavy on the glitter. This one is a lot easier to work with and has some beautiful warm and jewel-toned shades. It’s good value for the price as the double-ended brush you get with it is actually fantastic, and there’s also a handy little booklet of ideas and guides for using the palette.

The Dark Horse
TheBalm Nude ‘Tude Palette, €35 from Cloud10Beauty.com

Ever heard of TheBalm? I’ve yet to try a bad product from them, and happily, the brand is quickly becoming more accessible in pharmacies nationwide, as well as from my favourite Irish beauty e-tailer, Cloud10Beauty. TheBalm Nude ‘Tude palette is an absolutely gorgeous warm-toned array of shadows; ranging from glittery coppers to matte, bone-white shades. The colours are well thought out and I’m a sucker for the cute packaging!

The Bargain
Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone Palette, €6 from Penneys and pharmacies nationwide

The Comfort Zone palette is brilliant value even if you don't end up using all of the colours – I'm mad about the deep, dark shimmery brown in it, and the shade down on the bottom right-hand corner is a pretty excellent dupe for MAC's Club eyeshadow. The pigment on these is incredible, they’re easy to blend, and just like any shadow, they’ll last all day with the help of a good primer.

Viva Adonis is written by two Dublin girls, Deirdre Foley and Sinéad Smith who admit to having a pretty unhealthy passion for beauty. Their blog is a mix of skincare tips, fake tan hacks, make-up reviews, beauty tips, fashion and lifestyle.

SHEmazing! caught up with the girls to get the low down on their beauty secrets and tips:

What is your best budget beauty buy?
D: Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer is probably my most repurchased budget item. It’s an incredible concealer for the price so I always have a few – in my handbag and at home! It’s also one of the only concealers I can use both on blemishes and under the eyes – fantastic stuff.

S: Most definitely the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. After years of forking out for high-end micellar solutions to take my slap off before cleansing, I’m so glad that a budget version is available. It doesn’t cost much more than a fiver and is often on offer in Boots so, I stock up!

What is your top make-up tip?
D: Don’t cake on the foundation. Use a light hand and then go in with concealer on the areas where you need it. It took me years to learn this one!

S: Put some time into your brows. Whether that means growing them out, filling them in or seeing a professional to get them looking their best, the brows frame the face and instantly make any make-up look you do look sharp and polished.

Most girls have much-loved lipstick – what’s yours?
D: Probably MAC Lady Danger. It’s a real power red and the orangey undertone gives it a retro feel, which I love as I enjoy looking back to the fifties and sixties for make-up inspiration.

S: Oh God, do I really have to choose?! Probably MAC Violetta – an incredibly vibrant true purple. I’ve been stopped numerous times while wearing this by people wanting to know the shade and it goes equally well with a basic daytime look as it does with a smokey eye. It’s probably the most striking lipstick in my collection.

What was your very first perfume and what are you currently wearing?
D: I think my first perfume that I bought myself was CK One – predictable but it’s still a scent I like! Right now I am loving Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess for day and Tom Ford Black Orchid for night.

S: I think my very first perfume was Burberry, the original one. Now I wear Estée Lauder Modern Muse during the day and something heavier like Tom Ford Violet Blonde for evenings.

You’re only allowed use three make-up products for the rest of your life – what are they?
D: Foundation, liquid eyeliner and red lipstick! So Laura Mercier Silk Creme, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner and MAC Lady Danger. Don’t ask me again or I’ll change my mind!

S: I always maintain that all I need is my eyebrows on, some mascara and a flash of colour on the lips and I’d be happy out. Right now, that would mean Anastasia Brow Duo in Medium Brown, Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara and something versatile like MAC Morange lipstick that can be worn as an in-your-face orange lip or blotted down to a lovely, light coral-orange stain.

Don’t forget to check out Viva Adonis and follow the girls on Facebook and Twitter.
