A priest based in Donegal has told his parishioners that practising yoga, tai-chi or Reiki is “contemptible.”

Fr Padraig O’Baoill wrote in his weekly newsletter to the parishioners of Gaoth Dohair: “As followers of Jesus Christ we should not partake in things that go against our religion. Accordingly, you should not take part in yoga, thai chai or Reiki … do not put your souls in jeopardy for the sake of these contemptible things.”

A local yoga teacher in the area has reacted by saying: “I have to say that this advice seems to be coming from a position of ignorance. However, I think priests in general are sceptical of yoga and Reiki. I can see where they are coming from but I think they need to find out more about these subjects.”

Will you be foregoing your weekly yoga session?

While most of us were still fast asleep at six this morning, hundreds of people were dancing away at Dublin’s first yoga rave.

The idea which was originally launched by a company called Morning Glory in New York – finally found its way to the Yoga Hub on Camden Street this morning.

Even though most raves are associated with a few alcoholic beverages, organisers insisted that attendees had to arrive at the event sober.

The next morning rave is taking place on August 6th at 6.30am.

Well it’s one way to start the day!

It is favoured by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, although this doesn’t surprise us to be honest, and is even used by athletes and soldiers to build muscles and recover from an injury.

But what exactly is aerial yoga or anti-gravity yoga as it is also known as?

Well, it involves swinging from a sling hammock which is hanging from the ceiling. Once in the sling, you will do a series of exercises that involve you hanging upside down by your ankles or  swinging in the hammock with your head facing the floor to name a few – basically yoga positions in a sling.

While it does seem like a strange way to exercise, the workout is apparently great for your core strength and stretching the body.

Apparently hanging upside down is great for your complexion as it helps blood flow – we might just have to follow in Gwenie’s footsteps and give this a go.

Yoga, chatting to friends and writing things down – this is how Aussie supermodel Miranda Kerr stays sane.

The model admitted she has struggled to keep negative thoughts at bay, especially during her very public break-up from ex-hubby Orlando Bloom.

But even while juggling a hectic schedule as well as being mum to super cute three-year-old son Flynn – Miranda sticks to a few very simple techniques to stay cool, calm and in control.

Speaking about how she deals with life’s obstacles, she said, “When I have challenges now, I feel like I sit with them, I try to look at things, because there’s always a positive and a negative to everything.

“And sometimes I’ll speak to friends, and sometimes I’ll just meditate and I’ll visualise letting it go. Meditation and yoga, and having people, as I said, who you trust, who you talk to. But also writing. I like to write, and then I can rip it up or burn it.”

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking January is the time to start a fad diet or an extreme detox, but the experts from Wellbeing Escapes shows we’ve been getting it wrong all along.

Since days are much longer now, our body’s natural cycle dictates that we actually need extra care and nourishment to get us through winter times.

Here are a few ways we can take care of our bodies without putting it through hell:

  • Eat nourishing foods but don’t overdo it and always eat according to your body’s requirements.
  • Pamper yourself when you get the chance with a gentle massage.
  • A bit of yoga never killed anyone – do gentle workouts that will still help you to build up enough sweat to release toxins from your body.
  • Make some time for meditation because when your mind is at peace, your body is at peace.

As far as a detox goes, try holding off until spring. Your body will naturally have more energy, so you will probably get better results.
