Our favourite Southern belle Reese Witherspoon turned the ripe old age of 40 yesterday, which you’ll have been made well aware of if you follow the actress on social media.

The Oscar winner rallied an impressive list of famous buddies to celebrate her landmark birthday, with Matthew McConaughey, Taylor Swift Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson all showing up to wish the birthday girl well – and, in Taylor’s case, even give an impromptu live singing performance.

Dressed in a purple sequin mini dress for the occasion, Reese didn’t look anywhere near her 40 years, but of course she’s not the only famous name to be defying the laws of gravity.

Here are just a few of the stars who are totally working that ‘40-going-on-21’ look…

Gabrielle Union, 43

From pom-poms to news reports, Gabrielle Union looks the same now on BETs Being Mary Jane as she did on the 1999 CLASSIC Bring It On.

Gwen Stefani, 46

Having moved on from her divorce last year to new man Blake Shelton, Gwen sure is showing her ex what he’s missing.

Sandra Bullock, 51

Standing strong as one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, Sandra has been playing characters in their thirties for the last ten years.

Ellen Degeneres, 58

WHAT!? Just, WHAT!?

Meryl Streep, 66

Having famously been told she was too ugly for King Kong, Meryl sure showed them.

Goldie Hawn, 70

A woman that proves, if a hairstyle ain’t broke…

Jane Fonda, 78

Miss Anti-Ageing herself shows us all who’s boss.

Charlotte Church celebrated her 30th birthday by hosting a wild party in her house, but now her neighbours are in RAGE.

Residents if the small village in Wales were less than impressed when music was heard playing until nearly 6am, and they called it a "warzone" on the street outside.

Nearly 100 guests attended the party in Charlotte's £1.5m (€1.9m) home and the police received numerous calls of complaint.

Some disgruntled neighbours said they heard a woman "shrieking" all night long.

A local man said: "I called the police about 4.30am. I was sick of hearing this wailing coming out over a speaker system. I presume it was Charlotte singing. Put it this way – she's no longer got the voice of an angel."

While another said, "Wow, I heard it till 5am, I'm all for people having a good time but the noise was ridiculous."

There ain't no party like a Taylor Swift party, am I right?! And if you're a member of the Tay Tay #squad, you can expect a very memorable birthday bash indeed.

That's what model Lily Aldridge received for her 30th birthday last night as Taylor welcomed the crew into her LA home to ring in the big 3-0. Fellow Bad Blood video stars Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid were also invited to the celebration.

@taylorswift -we just show up. Thank you for making us and all beautiful women feel beautiful

Gigi shared a few party pics on SnapChat which offered a glimpse into the low-key party. Taylor even gifted her guests with a VMA Moonman award with each of the guests names inscribed into the plaques.

Goodnight Gorgeous!!! @taylorswift Love you #Badblood #Vma #MoonMan

And the outcome of this? A Bad Blood dance party with the Moonman, because it doesn't get much better than that, right?

Taylor's beau, Calvin Harris, also attended as he was given photo credit for a very funny cat snap:

We don't know about you, but we'd love to be in Taylor's girl gang!

Last night saw another big birthday bash coming from the Kardashian-Jenners. At this time it was none other than momager Kris Jenner.

Kris celebrated her birthday in serious style, with a Great Gatsby themed party. And the outfits? They all looked incredible.

Costing a massive €1.8m, there was no shortage of sequin beaded gowns, cropped bobs and tassled tresses at the 1920s-inspired bash (except for Kourtney, who reminded us why we love her when she went for a sultry mobster look).

Take a look inside Kris Jenner’s #SexySixty soiree with all the best Insta’s from the night:

A black mesh maxi – with a distinctly designer feel: we've had our eye on one particular dress that Penneys has had in the offing since unveiling its a/w collection.

And now – FINALLY! – it's arriving in Irish stores.

The ultimate statement dress! Sequin clutch €10/$12, Maxi dress €27/$31#Primark #fashion

A photo posted by Primark (@primark) on

Priced at just €27, this will be in your wardrobe LONG after the festive season wraps up. It's also has a super-flattering style – while the lace and mesh panel detail from the knees downward is ideal for anyone who's slightly self-conscious of their legs.

For those who'd rather something more typically party-season – SHEmazing! really loves the below too. Hurrah for Penneys!

Silver/ black sequin dress €25
Black spot prom dress €35
Black velvet one-shoulder dress €14

If you're planning your party outfits already, you have no doubt come across the sparkles and sequins dilemma.

Yes, they look great (especially for Christmas time), but there's a fine line between looking chic and looking like you crawled out of a 7-year-old's wardrobes.

So, to avoid any style disasters, follow this handy guide to grown-up sparkles:

1. Go for sophisticated styles

It's not all about the sparkle here, and one way to really avoid looking childish is to don an unusual and sophisticated outfit.

Tap into different decades, like Fei Fei Sun did here wearing Michael Kors. The Forties-meets-Eighties dress is a PERFECT base to show off gold sequins.

2. If unsure, wear on just ONE piece of clothing

Yes, we can all doubt our outfit choices sometimes, and they best way to be confident (in this regard) is to stick with something low-key. Agyness Deyn displayed this perfectly by only wearing sequins on the arms of her jacket/dress.

It's chic enough to stand out from the crowd, but also paired-back enough to be comfortable.

3. Opt for vertical lines

If you really want to show off your figure, go for sequins that fall in a vertical line rather than horizontal as it will give you a more slimline shape.

As seen on Kate, the dress flatters her in all the right places and the light catches off the sequins for a really elegant look.

4. How to make it sexy

If you want a more glamorous, sexy look, the mini is the way to go. As seen on this Michael Kors (he really has a thing for sparkle this season) dress, the shorter the better.

A slouchy fit and not showing too much skin up top is a great way to add just the right amount of hotness to your outfit. Showing too much skin could be a little OTT.

While many people enjoy the prospect of a good wedding, it is a celebration after all, you can struggle to convince your friends to go all the way just for the sake of a decent weekend away.

Falsa Boda is an Argentine event company that have identified this love of weddings. However, they know that plenty of twenty and thirtysomethings have something of an aversion to marriage.

The group of friends behind the venture came to the conclusion that plenty of their friends had never actually attended a wedding, despite loving the prospect of the wedding party itself.

They host fake weddings, and they have plans to bring them around the world.

All of the fun, with none of the commitment or need of a significant other. We’re already thinking  that this could go down a treat at home.

Falsa Boda organise events that mimic actual wedding ceremonies where guest pick the venue they want to attend and are then given a list of instructions.

These include most importantly the dress code and meeting points- because no one likes walking into big social events solo.

They even employ couples who act as a bride and groom to re-enact marriage vows in front of the guests.

There is also a wedding band. So rock the boat would be a given then, and a bar. Amazing.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, one of the company’s founders Mauro De Girolamo said the parties have all been a huge success with guests so far. They have now have plans to expand globally.

“Once, a group of guys came to a Falsa Boda. They arrived a day before the party, pretending to celebrate a ‘Fake Bachelor Party’.

It consisted of picking a ‘Fake Groom’ and going from bar to bar celebrating and having fun all night long,” he added.

They’ve already had one international party in Moscow, Russia.

So, the next time you get a wedding invite for a couple you don’t ever recall meeting before don’t be so quick to ignore it.

It’s important to remember that just being able to eat outdoors is a huge novelty for people in Ireland, so unlike an indoor celebration, it actually requires a lot less effort on the part of the hostess.

Make a game plan

Even if it’s a casual outdoor gathering, being organised and making a few lists in advance will save you in the long run. First, make a guest list so you know how many people you need to feed and if there are any allergies you need to consider. A shopping list will also prevent extra stress and make you much less likely to forget something on the day, which means you will be in a position to relax and enjoy a nice drink with friends and family.

Keep it simple

For your own sake, don’t go overboard with your menu or decorating. The more pressure you put on yourself, the more likely that something will go wrong.

Stay on your neighbours’ good side

With any outdoor gathering, there’s bound to be noise that can go on into the night. Stay on good terms by extending an invite to your neighbours. If they don’t know you that well, they probably won’t come but it’s a nice way to let them know there may be a bit of noise that night and that they’re welcome to join the fun.

Do all the advanced prep you can

You don’t want to be stuck chopping or stirring when your guests are enjoying the party – you’ve done the hard work, so you should be able to enjoy it with them! Prepare whatever you can the night before or that morning, so you just need to worry about barbequing and pouring drinks when the party is in full swing.

Don’t worry about decorating

Most barbeques in Ireland are held with little notice, so you don’t need to worry about elaborate decorations or picking a theme. If you want to make your garden summery and festive, you can’t go wrong with fairy lights or Chinese lanterns.

Sort the seating

At a summer gathering, people are at your house for the long haul, so you’ll need enough seating for the majority of your guests. Move your dining chairs, stools and anything else portable outside and borrow folding chairs from family or friends if you’re short.

Don’t stress about drinks

Don’t go overboard when it comes to drinks – you’re already providing a location and food, so people will be happy to bring their own alcohol. It is a nice touch to have a few beverages handy though. Make up a nice summery cocktail and have some beers for people who want something lighter. Amstel Radler’s refreshing mix of beer, cloudy lemon and 2% ABV is perfect for your summer party, especially for those who want to stay fresh for the next day.

It's the night of the year that carries the most expectation but rarely lives up to the hype. Whether it's down to drinking a little too much champagne before the countdown or not making it out due to a simple lack of planning, our New Year's Eve celebrations often fall flat at the first hurdle.

You tell yourself every year that it will be different, but this time it actually will be, because we have provided you with a tried-and-tested list of preparations to ensure that you organise the best New Year's Eve ever.

1. Make a solid plan

Yes folks, the key is in the organisation, especially if you're planning a trip away or a night out with a big group of people. If you want your New Year's Eve to go as smoothly as possible, decide on your plan as early in advance as you can, and stick to it. Make sure everyone knows what's happening, where you're headed, what time to be there, etc. As one of those nights that can go either way – epic success or major disaster – the best way to ensure that it goes off without a hitch is to plan every detail. Make Monica Gellar-style itineraries if needs be!

2. Pre-book your taxis

Heed our warning or you'll still be at home, waiting for a taxi to pick you up during the countdown. Even worse, you might be forced into assuming the role of designated driver for the night, just so that it isn't a total disaster. Whether you're hitting a party or heading into town for the night, book your taxi to and from the venue as early as you can so as not to miss out on one precious moment of celebration.

3. Make it special

While Stephen's Day seems to be one of those nights where everyone just heads to their local for a bit of craic, there is something distinctly special about New Year's Eve; it's about everyone getting together to celebrate the past and look forward to the future. Whether you're marking the occasion with friends or family, go all-out with the decorations and the tunes to create the perfect ambiance. If you're throwing a party, give it a theme and make everyone come in their finest glad rags to kick off the year in style.

4. Park the drama

Okay, so maybe you didn't find the perfect party dress in time, or perhaps you didn't get tickets to that big event that you had been looking forward to. A sure way to ruin your night is to feed into your own drama or that of those around you. Tell yourself that you're going to have an amazing night no matter what, and walk away from any unnecessary conflict. New Year's Eve is all about being with the people you love and having fun, so make the most of the night you get rather than comparing to the night you had hoped for.

5. Stock the fridge

We're thinking champagne for the countdown and plenty of food for the inevitable hangover the next day! Nothing ruins your epic New Year's Eve like waking up to a pounding headache and an empty fridge. This is even more important if you're throwing a party – there will be crashers and they will expect a feed the next morning!

6. Charge your phone/ camera

New Year's Eve is the biggest party night of the year. On top of that, it's probably the last time you and your friends or family will all be together for another year, so it's prime memory-making time. Make sure your gadgets are charged so you don't miss one precious moment – your photos and videos will provide a year's worth of happy memories.

7. Be with the people you love

Okay, it's prime party time, but the sentiment of the event falls a little flat when you find yourself wandering around a club or a random house during the countdown, wondering who half of these people are. A sure way to guarantee you have the best New Year's Eve possible is to surround yourself with your loved ones. Trust us; there's something really lovely about welcoming in a new year with the people you hold dearest, rather than sweating it out in a club around some seriously drunk strangers.
