E! host Giuliana Rancic has ben forced to make a public apology for offensive comments she made on air about actress and singer Zendaya.

Giuliana was speaking during the Fashion Police Oscars special when she made some seriously badly thought out remarks about Zendaya's choice of hairstyle for the evening.

Speaking about the actress' new dreadlocks, the presenter said, "I feel like she smells like patchouli oil."

"Or weed," Kelly Osbourne added, with Giuliana agreeing, "Yeah maybe weed," as her co-hosts laughed.

Many viewers were outraged at the comments, describing them as racist, hateful and offensive:

Zendaya herself also took to social media to post an open letter about the hurtful remarks. "There is a fine line between what is funny and what is disprespectful," she wrote, adding, "My wearing my hair in locs [dreadlocks] on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough."

Well said!

Giuiliana herself responded on Twitter this morning, saying, "Dear @Zendaya, I'm sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!"

We're glad to see Giuliana apologising, but we hope it teaches her to watch her words next time.

After weeks of awards ceremonies, from the Golden Globes to the Grammys, the Oscars is one of the final nights for Hollywood's glam pack to show off their red carpet style.

Many stars played it safe last night with gorgeous neutral tones, form fitting gowns and chic cuts. Others (we're looking at you Lady Gaga) went all out for the night, embracing the closing night of the awards season with some seriously crazy designs.

As always, a few key trends showed up again and again with each dress we saw.

Here are some of the best…

1. Whitest and brightest
White and cream dresses were a huge hit last night, with Best Actress winner Julianne Moore dazzling in custom made Chanel, Reese Witherspoon going for a classically cut Tom Ford, and Lupita Nyong'o looking fab as always in Calvin Klein.

2. Beaded beauties
Heavy embellishment and beading were all over last night's red carpet. We're not sure about the colour of Emma Stone's washed out green dress, but we love the cut.  Rosemund Pike stole the show in her scarlet Givenchy number, while Jennifer Aniston looked quite the sex kitten in a plunging Versace gown.

3. Prom Queen
Giant meringue-style dresses made an unexpected comeback last night, but it wasn't always a great choice. Felicity Jones' Alexander McQueen number might have worked were it not for the unflattering silver satin, while the whole world boggled at Lady Gaga's gloves – not to mention her giant Azzedina Alaia dress. As for Jennifer Lopez, she looked undeniably fab in Elie Saab. That neckline!

But even J-Lo fell foul of her too-big dress when she tripped while walking off stage after presenting the award for Best Costume Design:

4. Stunning and sheer
Sheer black gowns were all over the red carpet last night, but again this trend was VERY hit or miss. Margot Robbie and Lily Collins kept their looks demure with just small areas of sheer fabric. As for Rita Ora… well… if your ENTIRE ass is on show then you can probably assume your dress is a tad too sheer!

The Oscars red carpet is a cut-throat place as E! host Ryan Seacrest proved yesterday in no uncertain terms!

Ryan was scouting for celebrities to interview before the ceremony when Naomi Watts' publicist all but pushed the actress in his direction, saying, "Ryan, I have Naomi!"

The host clearly didn't deem poor Naomi famous enough though, as he shunned her in favour of Whiplash star Miles Teller, shaking his head at Naomi's publicist as he did so.

Ouch!

Ryan must have felt bad later on, as he did come back to Naomi for a chat, asking her about (what else?) her pre-Oscars diet.

Although Naomi had been pictured on Instagram just hours before holding up a homemade frittata, she admitted that she hadn't eaten much of anything that day. "'I’m hungry on days like today because you usually have starved yourself," she said. Well… at least she's honest!

Despite Ryan's awkward snub earlier in the evening, Naomi's Oscars look went down a storm, with her Armani cut-out gown earning her a place on many of last night's Best Dressed lists:

Although she was not up for any awards herself, Naomi's recent film Birdman came away with the gong for Best Picture – so all in all not a bad night!

Khloé Kardashian revealed she was still quite shaken up as she took to the red carpet as last night's Oscars.

The reality star was on her way to the airport in Montana on Saturday after a family skiing trip, when she spun out of control and swerved into oncoming traffic.

Khloé's sisters Kylie and Kim, and Kim's toddler daughter North were also in the car but luckily everyone walked away unharmed.

Reflecting on the incident as she took over red carpet hosting duties for E! last night, Khloé said the girls felt thankful to be alive. "I hit some black ice, car span out of control, but I gained control and ended up in a ditch. I was driving," she said. "Kim was screaming and crying – she was shook up a little bit but OK."

The crash occurred when a passing truck sent snow flying onto Khloé's windshield, obscuring her view, and police confirmed that the horrifying incident was due to "poor road conditions" and was not Khloé's fault. "It was really scary yesterday but we're all good, all safe," she said yesterday.. "It was Kylie, Kim, North, and I. We were all safe, thank god."

The 30 year old didn't have much time to recover from the crash though, as she spent all of Sunday preparing for her red carpet coverage. She shared this behind the scenes snap with her Instagram followers, writing, "Loving my red gown by Lanvin!"

Wow… we're not sure we'd manage to look quite so composed just 24 hours after such a scary crash… Khloé is definitely a true professional!

The 87th Academy Awards took place last night, with cinema's biggest and brightest (or biggest and "whitest" according to host Neil Patrick Harris) gathering to honour the best films of the last year.

Due to that pesky time difference, most of Ireland was tucked up in bed by the time the ceremony kicked off… but if you missed out on the action, fear not, because we've rounded up some of the night's best and worst moments in GIF form.

Here goes…

The actress indulged in some serious eye-rolling when her mum Melanie explained why she (understandly) doesn't want to see Fifty Shades of Grey.

Sounds like Dakota Johnson needs to take some advice from JK Simmons' acceptance speech and start being a bit nicer to her long-suffering mother!

The Fifty Shades of Grey star, who presented an award at last night's ceremony, walked the red carpet with her actress mum Melanie Griffith, but seemed to forget the cameras were rolling and started acting the maggot in a big way.

Presenter Lara Spencer stopped the pair to ask them a few questions – but it soon became clear Dakota was in no form to chat to a reporter. Things got off to a bad start when Lara referred to the actress as Melanie's "little girl," and it all went downhill from there.

When asked what she thought of the erotic drama Fifty Shades, Melanie admitted that she had chosen not to see the film, saying, "I don't think I can, I think it would be strange," while Dakota kept repeating, "Maybe one day."

Melanie continued to defend her choice by saying, "She [Dakota] is a really good actress…I don't need to see it to know how good she is."

25-year-old Dakota then turned to her mum and snapped  “Alright! You don’t have to see it,” before turning away from the microphone and adding, “Jesus Christ.”

Awkward, much?! Dakota then dug herself into an even bigger hole by saying, "It's a movie. She knows that… I’m like, ‘You can see it!’ and she’s just like, ‘No.’”

We hope the mother and daughter team patched up their differences later in the night!

JK Simmons may have won an Oscar for his role as the terrifying and abusive Terrence Fletcher in Whiplash, but last night he proved he's a softie at heart.

The star was accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor when he begged viewers everywhere to call their parents and tell them how loved they are.

"If I may, call your mom, call your dad" the Juno star told the audience last night. "If you're lucky enough to have parents, or two, alive on this planet, call them. Don't text, don't email, call them on the phone, tell them you love them and thank them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you."

JK dedicated the award to his wife Michelle Schumacher, telling her, "I'm grateful for your love, your kindness, your wisdom, your sacrifice and your patience."

He also gave a shoutout to his two kids, Joe and Olivia, telling them they were "extraordinary." What an amazing dad/husband/person!

Twitter was soon awash with viewers (and stars) gushing about their mums and dads:

Speaking to reporters afterward, JK said he was "somewhat taken aback" by the response to his emotional speech. So lovely!

After majorly messing up Idina Menzel's name at last year's Oscars, we thought John Travolta would be keen to stay out of the limelight this time around!

The actor raised eyebrows all over the world at 2014's ceremony when he introduced Idina as Adele Dazeem – basically a random jumble of sounds which left everyone VERY confused.

This year though, he did one better and weirded out everyone in a big way when he attempted to give Scarlet Johansson a "friendly" kiss on the red carpet.

New mum Scarlett was posing for photographers outside when John stepped up behind her and planted a kiss on her cheek – much to poor ScarJo's shock and horror:

SHUDDER. Scarlett did manage to crack a half-smile once she realised what was going on, but it's clear she was more than a little creeped out! The pair did work together on the 2004 film A Love Song for Bobby Long, but judging by these pictures, they aren't exactly best friends.

So, we've finally got John Travolta figured out – he's that awkwardly overly familiar uncle you see once a year at some family event and pray you're not left to make small talk with…

As for Idina-gate, the Wicked actress attempted to make light of John's 2014 flub by giving him a taste of his own medicine. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage my very dear friend, Glom Gazingo," she said as John joined her on stage to present the award for Best Original Song.

Could we be cringing any more for him right now?!

The 2015 Academy Awards nominations were announced yesterday, and although there were some snubs (sorry Jennifer Aniston!), the list for Bect Picture looks pretty solid!

Eight films made the shortlist, but we've narrowed down five that we reckon are well worth a watch. Some of these are already out on DVD, so you won't have to waste ALL your money on cinema tickets!

Birdman
Where to watch: Currently in cinemas
What to expect: Michael Keaton plays a washed-up actor trying to regain credibility in this dark comedy. Once the star of the Birdman superhero films, Riggan Thomson tries to make a comeback on the stage. Naomi Watts, Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis also star. Michael was nominated for a Best Actor gong for his role as Riggan, while Emma Stone was nominated for her role as his long-sufferring daughter.

 

Boyhood
Where to watch: DVD, currently re-released in selected cinemas
What to expect: Richard Linklater's stunning coming-of-age drama is hotly tipped to win big at this years Oscars. The film charts the growth of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from the ages of seven to 18 – the lead members of the cast gathered to shoot scenes every year for over a decade. Ethan Hawke, who also starred in Linklater's films Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight plays Mason's dad.

 

Grand Budapest Hotel
Where to watch: DVD
What to expect: The film tells the story of Gustave H, the concierge at the legendary Grand Budapest hotel, and lobby worker Zero Mustafa who becomes his most trusted employee and friend. You'll be craving a treat after seeing Mendl's stunning Courtesan au Chocolat!

 

The Imitation Game
Where to watch: Re-released in selected cinemas on 12th February
What to expect: Benedict Cumberbatch stuns in this incredible biopic based on the life of WW2 code breaker Alan Turing and his efforts to break the Nazi's Enigma code. The film also charts other key events in Turing's life – some of which are immeasurably tragic. Benedict's Best Actor nomination is well-deserved.

 

The Theory of Everything
Where to watch: Currently in cinemas
What to expect: The early years of physicist Stephen Hawking's life and his turbulent first marriage are charted in this emotional drama. Best Actor hopeful Eddie Redmayne plays Hawking, who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease aged just 21.
