On the eve of World Mental Health Day (tomorrow 10th October), Women’s Aid, the national organisation supporting women subjected to intimate relationship abuse, is highlighting the negative effect that intimate relationship abuse can have on young women’s mental health as part of their #TooIntoYou campaign.

The four-week multi-media campaign is raising awareness of intimate relationship abuse against young people and draws attention to the severe and lasting mental health implications of abuse, especially for those beginning adult life and their first intimate relationships. This includes enduring the subtlety of psychological manipulation, and the challenges young people face in identifying abusive behaviours.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Sarah Benson, CEO of Women’s Aid, says:

“Women’s Aid research on intimate relationship abuse against young women in Ireland found that 1 in 5 young women aged 18-25 have been subjected to abuse by a current male partner or ex. 84% of these young women said that the abuse had a severe impact on them including suffering low self-esteem/self-worth, enduring anxiety and depression and being isolated or withdrawn from friends, family, and social events. Very worryingly, 44% of young women subjected to intimate relationship abuse experienced suicidal thoughts with 19% of these young women disclosing that they had attempted suicide because of the abuse.”

Mary Hayes, Project Lead of the #TooIntoYou campaign, explains:

“For a young person starting to make their way in the world, maybe in their first intimate relationship, abuse can completely knock their self-esteem. If it’s your first relationship you won’t have anything to compare it to, so you might accept abusive behaviours as normal. Psychological manipulation can be subtle, and it can be difficult for a young person to grasp that the controlling behaviours their partner is displaying are abusive, as they're just trying to feel good about their relationship.”

Ms Hayes continues:

“If controlling behaviours are brushed off as "not a big deal," or seen as a normal part of a relationship then it creates a harmful picture of what young people should expect in their intimate relationships. When they do experience these behaviours then it can be even more distressing when they feel low or anxious. Very often they will be made to feel that they are to blame for how their partner treats them. It can be very confusing.”

Emotional abuse, online abuse and sexual coercion are particularly common amongst young women. Women’s Aid research found that 9 out of 10 of young women abused were subjected to emotional abuse which can include being put down, constantly criticized, intimidated, monitored, or threatened with violence.

Ms Hayes continues:

“When you are young, and you are in an abusive relationship it can be incredibly distressing and frightening. It can impact your self-esteem and mood. Abusive and controlling behaviours can leave you feeling anxious and on edge all the time for how they will react. We have heard from many young women that the emotional toll abuse took on them is what really stuck with them, even after the relationship ended.”

Orla, a young woman subjected to intimate relationship abuse, says:

“When I was 17, I got into a relationship with an older boy. A few months in, he was adamant for me to stay in his house on the weekends, this is where the isolation began. Not hanging out with my friends on weekends, not spending time with my family. If I was to hang out with friends or attend a birthday party he would always join. After two years of this behaviour, I became a recluse. I felt so alone from falling out with my best friend and family over him. This made me feel even worse as I thought he was the only person I had left. I knew what he was doing was wrong, but I couldn’t stay away, he had isolated me from all my family and my friends, and I felt like I had nothing left but him.”

Ms Hayes concludes:

“Too Into You is such a vital resource. In the last three months alone, toointoyou.ie, our dedicated website for young people, was visited 4,000 times. Unfortunately, so much of what young people understand about relationships is unhealthy. With our #TooIntoYou campaign we want young people to know what an abusive relationship looks like, so they can spot the red flags early on in their own relationships before things become really bad. We also want them to know that they don’t have to suffer in silence and that there is specific support available for them if they need it at www.toointoyou.ie.”

Women’s Aid’s #TooIntoYou campaign will run from 9th October to 6th November. The #TooIntoYou campaign draws attention to harmful behaviours and call them out as abusive and unacceptable and raises awareness of the supports for young people at the website toointoyou.ie.

As World Mental Health Day approaches on October 10, CarePlus Pharmacy is taking an innovative approach to encourage open conversations about mental health within the community. This year, their focus aligns perfectly with the World Health Organisation's theme for 2023, "Mental Health is a Universal Human Right." In partnership with positive mental health advocate and writer Daragh Fleming, CarePlus Pharmacy is offering a simple yet effective mental health checklist to help individuals better understand and address their mental well-being.

Daragh Fleming, a passionate advocate for mental health, knows first-hand the challenges of dealing with depression and panic attacks. He now dedicates his efforts to eliminating the stigma surrounding these topics and has created a straightforward checklist for people to use as a starting point when they're feeling down or out of balance. Daragh explains, "It's a basic process but really effective. If I'm having an off day, I go through this list, and quite often something will click, and I'll realise maybe that I've neglected my sleep routine or haven't got enough exercise. Small changes like that can actually impact my mood very quickly, so it's helpful to be able to recognise them."

Daragh's checklist covers several key areas:

  • Exercise: Ensure you are getting enough physical activity. A brisk walk can be highly effective in lifting and maintaining your mood.
  • Sleep: Pay attention to the quantity and quality of your sleep. Most experts recommend 7 to 8 hours a night, so set up a routine and stick to it.
  • Hydration: Are you properly hydrated? Keep a glass or bottle of water by your side and aim to take in a couple of litres a day.
  • Time for yourself: Have you had a chance to switch off recently? Self-care is essential for maintaining good mental health.
  • Social life: Have you connected with friends or engaged in group activities lately? Social interactions play a vital role in our mental well-being.
  • Activities that bring joy: Identify and engage in activities that bring you joy. Whether it's going to the cinema, swimming, meditation, or journaling, make time for what makes you happy.

Daragh believes that running through this checklist can help individuals identify the root causes of feeling off balance for a few days. "It's a basic collection of topics that you can gauge for yourself and might enable you to take steps to feel better," he says. Some people even find it helpful to set the checklist as the screensaver on their phone or laptop to prompt them to stay on top of these important self-care aspects.

We’ve been dreaming about jumping into our warm, cozy bed all morning. There’s nothing better than curling up in your toasty duvet after a long day at work.

We pop the heating on, make a cuppa and scroll through Netflix before dozing off, but it turns out we’ve been making quite a rookie mistake before hitting the hay in the winter.

According to experts, sleeping with the heating on is actually really bad for you as it disrupts your sleep.

So, if you’ve been struggling to get a good night’s sleep this month then your central heating may be to blame.

How does the heating impact our sleep? Well, our bodies can’t deal with the fluctuations in temperature all too well, especially in the night time.

The Sun reported, “Often we are told the bedroom should be 16C to 18C but for some people that is too cold, so it is better to focus instead on simply making the bedroom feel cooler than the rest of the house.”

"The more important temperature for sleep is the one between the mattress and the duvet, which should be between 27C and 29C.”

Experts believe the best thing to do is to let your bedroom cool down before going to bed.

We’ll certainly be trying this before we doze off this evening!

Congratulations, you’ve made it to Friday!

The first full week of October is finally complete, and we couldn’t be more excited to chill out this weekend.

Even though the weather is set to warm up briefly again, we’re definitely in an autumnal mindset now and want nothing more than to curl up on the sofa with a blanket, a pumpkin-scented candle burning in the room, and a great film.

As fans of the beloved ABBA jukebox musical will know, this tale picks up five years after the events of the first Mamma Mia! movie. 

In short, Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) is continuing on with her mother’s legacy, as she prepares to re-open Donna’s hotel with a new name: Hotel Bella Donna.

The lineup for Dancing On Ice is finally complete!

Over the past week, the producers behind the hit ITV skating competition have been unveiling the celebrities who will be taking part in its upcoming series.

Now, ahead of its brand-new launch in January, the final two celebrities for 2024’s Dancing On Ice have been revealed.

First off, the DOI social media team took to Instagram earlier today to share that Emmerdale actress Roxy Shahidi will be taking to the ice rink.

“You're not ready for Roxy! Fresh from the Dales, welcome Roxy Shahidi to the rink for 2024,” they teased in their caption, alongside a promotional photo of the 40-year-old.

Later on, the Dancing On Ice team shared that their twelfth and final contestant is former Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas.

“Bringing suave style to his skates, welcome Ryan Thomas to the ice!” the social media team gushed for his announcement.

Following the completion of the lineup, many Dancing On Ice viewers have taken to its Instagram comments section to express their thoughts on the final recruits, as well as their opinions on the overall cast.

“Whoohooo love Ryan,” one fan praised.

“Roxy for the win!” another exclaimed.

“STOP IT, this probably has to be the best dancing on ice lineup,” a third viewer praised.

Alongside Roxy and Ryan, the Dancing On Ice cast for next January includes radio presenter Adele Roberts, EastEnders alum Ricky Norwood, comedian Lou Sanders, former Gogglebox favourite Stephen Lustig-Webb and Made In Chelsea star Miles Nazaire.

Rounding out the lineup will be retired Olympic athlete Greg Rutherford, former Love Island winner Amber Davies, S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt, Coronation Street actress Claire Sweeney and retired boxer Ricky Hatton.

Although the judging panel has yet to be confirmed, it is expected that skating legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, Diversity star Ashley Banjo and former Strictly Come Dancing pro Oti Mabuse will return to their roles in January.

One of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing contestants has admitted that his appearance on Saturday’s show is at risk.

Jody Cundy is currently taking part in this year's Strictly lineup. The Paralympic cyclist and swimmer is partnered up with professional dancer Jowita Przystał, who won last year’s series.

Yesterday (October 5), the dancing pair appeared on Strictly’s companion show It Takes Two to spill all the details about their ongoing dance training.

During his conversation with presenter Janette Manrara, Jody revealed that he has had a difficult week in training.

"It's been a week of highs and lows. The first two days have absolutely flown by,” the 44-year-old began.

"At the end of day two we had done the full routine a number of times which I had not done for the previous two dances. I was really confident that I could perfect everything for Saturday. I got home on Tuesday night and took my leg off and was like 'Oh, that's quite sore,’” he recalled.

"I didn't really think too much of it and cleaned it, bathed it and made sure it was all ok. I got up at 4am and looked at my leg. It was warm, swollen and I was like 'That's getting infected,’” he continued.

Jody confirmed that he ended up rushing himself to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Thankfully, the dancing celeb received antibiotics and he went on to state: "It is healing and getting better. The swelling has gone down a little bit more."

However, concerns still linger about whether he will be fully ready to perform on Saturday night, as his health scare also caused interruptions to his training schedule.

Fans will have to wait and see how Jody and Jowita score tomorrow night, when the pair dance an American Smooth to the tune ‘Married Life’ from animated movie Up.
