Overdue a catch-up with your besties? New research reveals just one hour and 49 minutes is the perfect amount of time we need to spend catching up with friends to have the most significant positive impact on our well-being.

According to plant-based Califia Farms Cold Brew Coffee, who commissioned the research, two-thirds (72%) agree that quality time talking is the most essential part of get-togethers. Even a shorter 24-minute chat can benefit people’s mental health as much as a bubble bath.

Catching up over coffee is ranked as the top bonding experience shared with friends (51%), followed by taking a walk (46%) and having dinner out (43%). The research comes as Califia Farms partners with singer Rachel Stevens and her best friend to show how a refreshing Cold Brew coffee can fuel a nourishing heart-to-heart this summer.

Singer Rachel Stevens

Indeed, 41% prefer to catch up in the comfort of their own home over a restaurant or bar, while one in four (24%) believe a one-hour caffeine-fuelled catch-up is more valuable than an entire night out, with popular reasons including price (32%), convenience (30%) and noise levels (26%).

in the context of rising sobriety, over half (55%) prefer to ditch the alcohol and instead connect with their friends over a coffee, saying that it allows for richer conversation (34%), greater connection (31%) and a further 31% citing the cost benefits.

Rachel Stevens comments, “Since spending time in LA, I’ve fallen in love with a smooth Cold Brew coffee over ice – which I think started as a Californian trend and has now firmly hit UK shores! Alongside catching up with Nikki, it’s one of my favourite things. Even when I don’t have much time, I cherish our ritual of coffee and conversation at home. We block out time, ensure the children are entertained and settle down in one of our houses so that we can sit back, relax and have a good natter. It’s quality over quantity for us.”

Top five bonding experiences for connecting with friends:

  • Catching up regularly over coffee (51%)
  • Taking a walk (46%)
  • Having dinner out (43%)
  • Catching up over an alcoholic drink (36%)
  • Attending music / sporting events (23%)

Califia Farms Cold Brew coffee continues the brand’s plant-based mission, championing a future where plants replace dairy without compromising taste. Made with the highest quality ingredients from whole food plant sources, Califia Farms offers healthy and great-tasting plant-based alternatives.

XX Espresso Cold Brew Coffee:

Mocha Cold Brew Coffee:

“All I wanted was for Tony to remember how much I loved him and how grateful I was to have him in my life. But, as that faded slowly I knew deep down he was sharing with me the most vulnerable moment in his life that he could–being willing to sing with me when his nature was changing so deeply. As Philadelphia unveils its latest campaign aimed at promoting friendship, it comes to light that approximately 11% of Irish adults reveal they do not have someone they identify as their closest friend. The new campaign from the brand seeks to foster meaningful connections and address the challenge of individuals feeling without a best friend. This launch coincides with the emergence of a new formula from world leading friendship expert Professor Robin Dunbar, who says we only need 9 minutes per day to nourish friendship.

According to research, Irish individuals typically have between one to three close friends, with around three-quarters of them maintaining contact at least once a week. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of Irish adults are in touch with another 1 to 4 friends on a weekly basis. However, despite the importance of these friendships, meeting up in person has become challenging due to busy work schedules, family obligations, and an increase in time spent at home.

The significance of close friendships cannot be overstated. Recent medical studies* have highlighted that the quantity and quality of these connections serve as the most reliable predictors of both mental and physical health and overall well-being. It underscores the vital role friendships play in promoting a happier and healthier life.

The way people spend their time together is also crucial. Research demonstrates that whilst people maintain friendships in a variety of ways, including digitally (for example by phone, text and social media), food and drink play by far the most important role, with 80% of people surveyed believing that sharing food and drink is the best way to bond with each other as it creates little moments of connection.

Inspired by its origins in the Greek word ‘Philia’, which means ‘the love friends feel towards each other’, deliciously and comfortingly creamy Philadelphia is marking the launch of its new brand platform You’ve Got a Friend in Philly by working with leading friendship expert Professor Robin Dunbar. To encourage people around the world to spend time with those closest to them, Dunbar has calculated that only 9 minutes a day, or just over an hour a week if combined, is required to sustain each close friendship.

Furthermore, Dunbar’s calculations show that for every 9 minutes missed, the quality of that close friendship diminishes by 1%, meaning that great friends can soon become ‘just friends’. Dunbar's calculations show that after 100 days with little to no contact that the emotional connection of close or best friendships would then be lost.

Robin Dunbar, friendship expert and evolutionary psychologist, comments: “In modern life, which increasingly pulls us and our relationships in different directions, it’s more important than ever to nourish close friendships. Many of us are time-poor, but maintaining friendships doesn’t have to be a time-intensive exercise. By spending just 9 minutes consciously prioritising everyday moments together, we’ll stay close and connected with friends – and benefit from greatly enhanced wellbeing and happiness”.

Carla Reynolds, Philadelphia Brand Manager at Mondelez Ireland adds: “Our research emphasises that it's the small, meaningful moments of connection that truly make a difference in sustaining and enhancing relationships with close friends. Whether it is getting together for a quick and easy snack, or sharing delicious recipes, Philadelphia is the perfect accompaniment to sit down with friends and catch up.’’

Research was conducted to celebrate the launch of Philadelphia’s brand-new platform – You’ve Got a Friend in Philly – which recognises the importance of spreading friendship and firmly cements Philadelphia as a dependable and delicious, friend in your fridge. There will be elderly relatives in most families. These can be grandparents, uncles and aunts, or even your parents if you’re a middle-aged adult. As people age and enter the senior stages of life, their needs will change significantly. For example, most elderly people will have finished working and will be able to enjoy the extra free time that comes with retirement. This time can be well spent by cultivating some meaningful and enjoyable hobbies, travelling or learning a new skill. However, some elderly people see the abundance of free time as a burden rather than a pleasure, especially if they live on their own and are at risk of becoming lonely and isolated. Consider the circumstances of your elderly relatives and think about ways that you can help to improve their quality of life so they enjoy every day. This article describes two unique ways that you can help.

Regular visits

Recent research indicates that approximately a million elderly people in the UK experience feelings of loneliness on a regular basis. This may be because they’ve lost their life partner to illness or natural causes due to old age and now live alone. In addition, they may have a smaller circle of close friends and family members living nearby as some may have moved away.

Over time, loneliness can dramatically impact on an elderly person’s mental health and can make conditions such as depression and anxiety more common. It’s of paramount importance that you stay in regular contact with elderly family members who are in danger of becoming isolated. Aim to visit them once a week if they live a short distance from you so they continue to feel connected to the outside world. If they live a long distance away, make sure you stay in regular contact by phone. If your elderly relative is reasonably competent with technology and has a smart device or computer, consider contacting them by video call. This will allow you to have a face-to-face conversation with them and is a more personal way of staying in regular contact if they live far away from you.

When mobility and health declines

For many elderly people, later life is when mobility and general health levels start to decline. This is a normal part of the ageing process, but their home situation needs to be reassessed if they begin to suffer from regular falls or need ongoing help with specific health needs. If your elderly relative is beginning to struggle in their home, it’s beneficial to consider if their quality of life would be improved in an assisted living facility. High-quality assisted living facilities such as those that can be found at assisted senior living in Nashville can dramatically improve the quality of life of their residents.
