When it comes to shopping for winter clothes, coats rank as one of the bigger-ticket investment pieces that should be taken more serious than the rest.

The expectation is that it will last you for years and years, not just one single season; so if you want to nab the best coat you can find, follow these five simple rules so you won't be left with dreaded buyer's remorse:

Avoid extreme trends

Tha goal is to  buy a coat that will give you a lot of mileage – not just a one hit wonder. It's better to go back to basics for this one and not buy into any extreme trends; what's in this winter season might not be next year.

Go for a neutral colour palette or a safe pattern

A black or navy coat will always work but if you want something a bit fresher, opt for grey, camel or army green. When going for a pattern, stay safe such as check or tartan,

Find a silhouette for all occasions

For a practical investment, your best bet is to buy a coat that ties around the waist, is minimal at the front and has a nice collar. This will suits all styles and occasions, whether you're going to work or out for dinner. Fitted coats always look better than oversized ones.

Stick with looser-fit sleeves

We're constantly layering our outfits these days, so to avoid being bundled up and not being able to move your arms, opt for a loose-fit sleeve. You'll thank us later.

Keep length in mind

Gravitate towards a coat that hits the knee or just above. Those are the most flattering and functional. While long coats are very chic, they aren't as functional for everyday use.
