Major transport companies nationwide have joined forces in the fight against racism.

Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Transdev, Local Link bus services and the taxi industry have launched a campaign aimed at tackling racism on the country's public transport services.

Over the next two weeks, commuters can expect to see posters displaying the message "all made of the same stuff,” popping up on various modes of public transport.

Coordinated by the Immigrant Council of Ireland, this is the biggest anti-racism campaign of its kind in Europe.

Brian Killoran, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, said: “The Immigrant Council is proud to link up with national transport agencies to promote a message of solidarity and zero tolerance towards racism.”

“The public transport system is the perfect partner as it both serves and represents the cultural diversity in Ireland.”

Approximately one in six Dublin Bus employees are from a migrant background and Anne Graham, Chief Executive of Transport for Ireland, say its diverse workforce helps to provide a  "more diverse and more mature" public transport system.

Anyone who witnesses or experiences racism on Ireland's transport is urged to email stopracism@immigrantcouncil.ie

The National Transport Authority will this morning announce a new operator for 10 per cent of Dublin Bus routes.

It's understood that Luas operator Transdev, a number of British companies and Dublin Bus itself have applied for the franchise.

The 23 routes in question all serve suburbs in the greater Dublin area and do not go into the city centre. They include the 185 (Bray – Newtownmountkennedy), the 75 (Dún Laoghaire – Tallaght) and the 220 (Ballymun to Mulhuddart).

Some fear the move may lead to privatisation of some services, however, the NTA have denied this saying that the authority would still own the bus fleet and revenue, but would pay an external operator to run the routes.

Whoever wins the franchise will have to maintain existing bus services and no Dublin Bus employees will face redundancy.

People, we are truly living in the future.

We all know the trials and tribulations of getting on a long Dublin Bus commute, only to look at your phone to realise your battery is about to flat line. No Spotify or Insta scrolling you you, my friend.

In response the longstanding pleas for charging ports on public transport, it seems that Dublin Bus are stepping up to the plate.

Amazed Twitter user omgDebbie uploaded a picture of the mythical new ports.

According to The Daily Edge, a new fleet of updated Dublin buses are being rolled out, which have the upgraded feature.

'This is a further enhancement to improve facilities for our customers,' the public transport service confirmed to the online publication.

The response to the ports has been mixed, but mostly positive.

'It's like stepping through the gates of technological heaven,' reads one Twitter response.

'Bets on upstairs ones being the first to be hacked to spread malware,' said another.

We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for these ports on every journey from now on.

We obviously have a lot of opinions!

Around 7,000 people have submitted ideas for the redesign of the Dublin Bus network.

The ideas forum went live last month, on June 6, when the NTA published the Dublin Area Bus Network Redesign Choices Report.

A post shared by Dublin Bus (@dublinbusnews) on

The NTA say it's the biggest response that they have ever seen.

NTA chief executive, Anne Graham, said: "We launched this consultation process a month ago, and with 7,000 respondents, the reaction has been very positive.

"A lot of the work we do involves consulting with the public, but we took a different approach this time around and decided to put an online survey at the centre of the process."

A post shared by Dublin Bus (@dublinbusnews) on

"This made it far easier for people to respond to, and I think that has made the world of a difference in terms of the number of members of the travelling public who actually participated in the consultation."

The ideas forum closes on Friday, so there's still time to take the survey here.

It's always an amazing moment to see all of the rainbow flags flying all over Dublin in honour of Dublin LGBTQ Pride, which culminates this weekend.

Now, Dublin Bus is getting on board with Pride, and has rebranded some of their buses to reflect this.

Dublin Bus has decked out some of their vehicles with rainbow stripes.

The stripes sit alongside the slogan: 'Gen on board with pride.'

The wonderful move comes along with the announcement that a rainbow bus will be featuring in the Pride parade on Saturday June 24.

'We are delighted to support another year of Dublin Pride,' said Dublin Bus Chief Executive, Ray Coyne.

'Our commitment to diversity and inclusion stems from our Equality and Diversity strategy that was first introduced in 2003.'

'We are a diverse workforce serving a diverse community.'

What complete and utter legends.

As Bus Éireann  enters the fifth day of strike action, there are fears that Dublin Bus and Irish Rail may also strike in solidarity.

SIPTU is balloting its members at Dublin Bus and Irish Rail on taking industrial action.

Irish Rail workers previously engaged with the strike by refusing to cross the picket line last week, disrupting services.

"Iarnród Éireann has advised customers that there will be significant disruption to Intercity rail services today, Friday 24th March, arising from picketing associated with the Bus Éireann dispute," read a statement from Irish Rail at the time.

SIPTU representatives of Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and Bus Éireann   met yesterday to discuss the strike.

“The meeting also gave a mandate for a ballot for industrial action of union members in Dublin Bus and Irish Rail in sympathy with and in support of their colleagues in Bus Éireann ," said SIPTU Sector Organiser, Willie Noone.

"They believe that they are next in the firing line if management in Bus Éireann is allowed to force through cuts to wages and changes to conditions of employment of their staff.”

Oh, and while we have you; don't forget to have your say in the inaugural SHEmazing Awards this May! It's time to vote, and you can do it right here!
