Wild Youth band member, Conor O’Donohoe, is the special guest at a forthcoming public webinar “Brain Wise: Living Well with a Brain Tumour” being organised by Brain Tumour Ireland, the national charity supporting people with a brain tumour and their families, to coincide with International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (October 28 to November 4).

Conor sadly lost his mum, Jackie, to a brain tumour in 2011. Then just 17 years’ old, Conor will speak about how he navigated that time, how that event spurred him to live his very best life, and how his mum continues to inspire him.

The webinar, which takes place on Tuesday October 31 at 6.30pm, will also see presentations from a dietitian on eating well following treatment for a brain tumour, and jointly from a senior social worker and occupational therapist on navigating relationships at a time of great emotional trauma.

Registration for the webinar, which is free, is now open at www.braintumourireland.com.

Latest Research

In addition, on Wednesday November 1 at 6.30pm, Brain Tumour Ireland will co-host a Brain Tumour Research Update event in collaboration with the Precision Cancer Medicine Group at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). RCSI researchers, led by Prof. Annette Byrne, will discuss ongoing work to identify treatments for glioblastoma, including new ways to deliver drugs targeted directly at tumours. The event will be held in person at the RCSI, 123 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.

A new online support group for parents is also being launched as part of the week, to complement the existing online patient and family support groups. Full information on all the events taking place as part of International Brain Tumour Awareness Week can be found at www.braintumourireland.com

Staying Positive

For Wild Youth band member, and Brain Tumour Ireland ambassador, Conor O’Donohoe, it is important that we offer every support to those diagnosed with a brain tumour and to stay positive for them:
“My mum was my whole world and that world got turned upside down when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The person who had always been my navigator suddenly needed my help to navigate life which was a very strange role reversal. I was lucky to be able to create some really special memories with her. I remember when mum would be going to chemo, we would go together, we would get lunch beforehand and then go home together and watch a movie. My advice to others who may be supporting a family member who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour is to simply be there for them, to give them your love and support, and to stay positive. Have patience if they need to walk more slowly or are forgetful and do whatever you can to lift their spirits. Be grateful for every second that you have and appreciate every moment.

Conor O'Donohoe, Brain Tumour Ireland Ambassador

“Mum always told me to be my own person and to express myself. I owe my love of music to her, for sending me to piano lessons, and for always being so incredibly supportive. Her spirit lives on for sure and she is with me all the time.”

For Mr Stephen MacNally, a neurosurgeon at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, while symptoms of a brain tumour can also apply to so many other health issues, it is always best to get checked out:
“According to the latest figures from the National Cancer Registry (2018-2020)1, there are approximately 823 people diagnosed with a brain or other central nervous system (CNS) tumour each year in Ireland, with glioblastoma being the most common malignant tumour involved.

The good news is that the outcomes today, compared with 20 years ago, are much better thanks to the way we manage brain tumours. In terms of early diagnosis, the majority of brain tumours present with a seizure or deficit, including visual deficits, or perhaps some subtle character changes. However, I would always encourage people to get checked out by their GP for other symptoms such as recurrent early morning headache on awakening, with nausea or vomiting. With so many possible symptoms and signs, the cause is most likely to be something other than a brain tumour, but always best to get seen to.”

The National Cancer Registry also notes that brain and CNS tumours have a younger age profile than for most cancer types, representing more than 25% of all childhood cancers in Ireland. Each year, approximately 65 children and teenagers are diagnosed with a brain or CNS tumour here. Symptoms of a brain tumour can include headache, visual problems, speech difficulties, seizures, personality changes, memory loss, nausea and vomiting.

True or False: Top 5 Things to Know About Brain Tumours

Brain tumours are all the same. False.

It is estimated that there over 150 types of brain tumour, with a glioblastoma brain tumour being the most common. According to the Mayo Clinic, depending on the part of the brain in which the tumour occurs, different symptoms can arise. The frontal lobes control thinking and movement and tumours here can cause personality changes, balance problems or trouble walking. The parietal lobe in the upper middle part of the brain processes information about the senses and tumours there can cause vision and hearing problems. The occipital lobe in the back of the brain controls vision and a tumour here can cause sight loss. The temporal lobes on the sides of the brain process speech, memory and senses, and tumours there can cause speech difficulties, memory problems and altered senses.2

Not all brain tumours are cancerous. True.

Brain tumours can be malignant or benign. A malignant tumour spreads within the brain having started here in the first instance (primary brain tumour) or having spread from another part of the body (secondary brain tumour). Benign tumours do not contain rapidly dividing cancer cells and can grow for many years and may reach a large size before being detected. Malignant tumours usually grow more rapidly and come to attention earlier.

Benign tumours don’t require treatment. False.

Even benign tumours can be as serious as those that are malignant, as they can press on the brain causing serious symptoms and be a threat to life. They may still require treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

All people with a brain tumour have a family history of the disease. False.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, just 5-10 per cent of people with a brain tumour will have a family history of the disease3. Other associations can include rare genetic syndromes, such as neurofibromatosis and Von Hippel-Lindau disease.

Headaches are the most common symptom of a brain tumour. True.

The Mayo Clinic notes recurrent headaches happen in about half of people with brain tumours2. The classic headaches associated with brain tumours are often worse on waking in the morning and, for some, headaches wake them from sleep. The vast majority of headaches experienced by people are unrelated to having a brain tumour.

Ireland’s pet experts Petmania have launched a national alert today that will advise pet owners on how to better care for their furry friends during the Halloween period.

The Irish-owned business, which has 15 stores nationwide, urges the public to take extra caution during this spooky season, by sharing several steps that can be followed to alleviate any stress or anxiety that their pets may experience during Halloween.

The following tips can help owners avoid disruption and any unnecessary stress towards their four-legged family members.

Prepare a safety den

Halloween can bring about many disturbances throughout the night such as door knocking and doorbell ringing. To help ensure that your pet feels safe, Petmania have advised creating a safety den using a pet crate to help them snooze through all the trick-or-treating.

Treat puzzles

To ensure your pet has a ‘hoppy’ Halloween, treat puzzles are a fantastic way to distract your pet from potential stresses such as the doorbell ringing.

Take care of your surroundings

Remember, folks, Halloween candy is for humans, not for your fur babies. Grapes, raisins, and chocolate are toxic to dogs so keep them well out of reach and choose a pet-safe treat instead.

Costumes are optional

Playing dress up can be fun, but it is important that your pet feels comfortable. If your pet is feeling anxious and do not wish to wear a costume, it is best to listen to them. If your pet is a 'purrfectionist' when it comes to their appearance, you can check out Petmania’s range of Halloween pet outfits!

Stay visible

If your pet is accompanying children while trick-or-treating, ensure that they are visible at all times. Reflective collars, leads, and coats will help you to ensure an eye is kept on your pet.

Commenting in advance of the spooky season, Emily Miller, Petmania Spokesperson, says: "Halloween is a time when pets can get easily spooked and run away, and the safest place for them to be is at home in a quiet space. Exercise is still important too so try to keep walks to daylight hours, and keep your pet on a lead when outdoors. We also advise pet owners to ensure their pets are microchipped and wearing an ID Tag, and that all contact details are up to date."

Prioritising our pets’ well-being is important as they can be easily overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of Halloween, such as loud fireworks, spooky decorations, and unfamiliar costumes. Stress can lead to anxiety, digestive issues, and even escape attempts, putting them at risk. By following Petmania’s guidelines to prevent stress during this festive period, you can ensure that your pet has a stress-free and enjoyable Halloween season.

Discover the movies people love or sometimes hate and see how we feel about them.

Popular culture has taught us that your favourite TV series or movie might not be liked by the rest of the world. This often causes multiple debates online and within friend groups – it’s fun and often needed! However, with so many movies to choose from, you should hit the jackpot with your selection at one time or the other, and even if you don’t, that’s fine too. A fitting example here is Game of Thrones and Batman. People were so convinced that both the series and film would not be successful. And if you are part of this fanbase, we bet you tried your best to convince others otherwise. But look at both franchises now, absolute superstardom. Here is a list of 10 movies you either love or hate.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

While Scott Pilgrim vs. the World might not be one of the movies filmed in Michigan compared to some of our top choices like Don’t Breathe, Batman vs. Superman, and also Dreamgirls, it remains a clear favorite on our list. Michael Cera plays the lead and title character, Scott Pilgrim, who meets a woman named Ramona and instantly falls for her. The catch, he needs to defeat her seven exes before they can begin a relationship. Now, this film is hailed by most as a true work of art and has even won multiple awards. The plot is a great concept, and the comic-like depictions of the characters and battle scenes are hilarious. Yet, many call this film a piece of bubble gum, and we simply don’t understand why. Love it or hate it, Scott Pilgrim is entertaining, and that’s good enough in our books.

Watchmen

A classic tale of a superhero gone rogue with a lot of little twists in between. It is classic and quite depressing at the same time. It received a lukewarm reception from viewers at large, while comic-book lovers praised the film for its raw take on superheroes. Oh, and it’s directed by Zack Snyder, so the dark tone and mood are a theme throughout the film.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing was a classic love story when it was first released in 1987. Millions of people love this movie, not only for the dance moves but the fact that it featured the late Patrick Swayze. The overall dance scenes were what made this a classic. It’s also one of the films referenced quite a bit in pop culture due to its famous lines such as, “nobody puts baby in a corner”. But it lacked plot and story development and came with little substance. The story arc has been done to death, and even the fans of this 80s classic, realise this today. Maybe the upcoming sequel might redeem it? While we don’t hate it, we don’t love it either.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Sometimes fans can be quite extreme with their criticism, and we get it. You expect a certain calibre of quality, and man, Star Wars fans wanted the original trilogy when it came to The Phantom Menace. We feel this was a great film to start the second trilogy, and while some things could have been done better, we don’t completely hate it. That’s because we got Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi – which this year turned into a TV series on Disney plus; fingers crossed for a second season.

Vanilla Sky

While this film was a box office success, largely due to the lead actors, critics slammed the film. This sci-fi/thriller follows a publishing magnet played by Tom Cruise, who ends up with a scar on his face after a car accident. This leads to him questioning his life and everything about it. While many people did enjoy it, others were not convinced. Even with other A-list actors like Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Kurt Russell at the helm, it’s still a film many hate.

Forrest Gump

This is an iconic award-winning film, we can’t imagine why anyone would want to hate it. It stars Hollywood’s nicest actor, Tom Hanks. This polarising hit follows Forrest Gump, a man with a low IQ, who recounts his life throughout the film. It has love, heartache, and some wonderful and wholesome moments. This can never be hateful in anyone’s books, and if it is, please rewatch it!

Avatar

There is no denying that James Cameron is a wonderful director. He has given us countless classics, and Avatar is one of them. Set in a futuristic world where Earth’s resources have been depleted, a group called the Resources Development Administration mines for valuable minerals on a planet called Pandora. The problem is the inhabitants aren’t on board with this and one day decide to take the RDA down. The film received praise, and rightfully so. The only thing people hated about the film at the time was the runtime of 162 minutes.

Titanic

Titanic, is another James Cameron feature. This film does not deserve any hate at all. Maybe only for the scene, spoiler alert, where Rose lies down on the door floating in the ocean and Jack meets a fatal end – there was totally enough space for Jack, come on. It’s been the running joke of 2022. Do we hate it? Not a chance!

Indiana Jones 4

The franchise is the stuff of legends as the iconic Harrison Ford plays the title character. The first three films were loved by all, but while the film scored a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans have criticised it for not capturing its true essence first introduced in the 70s. Do we love it? No, but we don’t hate it either.

Iron Man

Famous old-school directors have long criticised superhero movies. Citing them as lacking in substance and creativity. But this could not be further from the truth. The first Iron Man set the tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe we love today and propelled Robert Downey Jr. to superstar status. We love this one!

In the spirit of Halloween, the Chester Beatty museum is celebrating the weird and wonderful by hosting activity workshops on 30th and 31st October. Families can create “spooktacular” paper plate monsters with artist Jen O’Brien or learn to create their own talisman to protect them from all the ghosts wandering around!

In November, Chester Beatty are celebrating the Dublin Book Festival with a series of workshops, readings and panel discussions with some of Ireland’s and the world’s best literary voices. Later in the month, artist David Begley will host a botanical inks workshop on 25th November. Participants will have a chance to explore making and painting with natural inks using both ancient and contemporary recipes and learn how they are featured in Chester Beatty’s beloved manuscripts.

In the lead up to Christmas, The Cheater Beatty is embracing the spirit of the season by hosting family workshops on 2nd and 16th December where attendees will create Christmas ornaments and cards. Visitors can also learn drawing techniques such as line drawing, shading, perspective, and decoration during relaxed and informal sessions with Roxana Manouchehri on 10th December.

The Chester Beatty will also host a Christmas Concert on 13th December, featuring Cantoiri, a Dublin Choir. Their largely a cappella repertoire spans centuries and styles, from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Led by their musical director, Ben Barnes, Cantóirí’s festive performance will feature a selection of Christmas songs, old and new, including some of our most beloved carols from around the world.

Ongoing events will continue alongside these activities throughout the next three months. Highlights Tours will be hosted by one of the museum’s tour guides every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Dementia friendly tours will also be offered to people living with dementia and their loved ones. They centre on new themes every session and cover topics such as Buddhism and Mughal India. Finally, Qigong, a form of Chinese meditation, will be held on the rooftop garden each month as part of Wellbeing at Chester Beatty.

The Autumn Winter programme is full of great things to do and full information on these events (and so much more) are available on the Chester Beatty’s events page here.

To mark Atreus’ half birthday, Jordan and Naomi took to social media to pen a sweet tribute to their baby boy.

The Diversity dancer and social media star headed to Instagram to share a joint video to their thousands of followers.

The footage, which is set to Christina Perri's version of You Are My Sunshine, shows Naomi cuddling Atreus as he smiles and giggles.

Naomi wrote the moving caption for the clip, saying, “My baby is 6 months old, how did that happen! There really hasn’t been a single day I haven’t absolutely adored being your mumma”.

"The happiest, smiliest most content baby in the world. Only seemed right to share a video of the smiliest little face we get to see every single day".
