About sheep milk and lanolin

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and one of its main functions is to protect us from the outside world. Sheep milk has many properties that help the skin in acting as the body’s protective barrier.

  • It’s naturally high-fat content nourishes the skin
  • It is a readymade source of vitamins (such as retinol, ascorbic acid and vitamin c) and minerals (magnesium and calcium) that all preserve and improve the skin's appearance.
  • It is more abundant in proteins with a stronger amino acid profile than cow’s or goat’s milk.
Co-Founders Elaine Crosse & Nicola Lyons

Lanolin is a natural oil from sheep’s wool that locks moisture into the skin. The purpose of lanolin is to condition and protect sheep’s wool. This conditioning property is why it is widely used in cosmetics, skincare and hair products. Many lip balms and nipple creams contain it.

Bánór’s unique formulation fuses sheep milk and lanolin with gentle ingredients to suit all skin types. It is naturally scented with Lavender, Geranium and Ylang Ylang to deliver its premier body care range including a luxury hand and body milk lotion and cream wash, in addition to a body butter scrub and oil.

Our favourite products from the collection include:

Body Wool Oil, €30

Hand & Body Milk Collection, €70

Contains Hand & Body Cream Wash (250ml) and Milk Lotion (250ml)

The Wool Collection, €68

Contains Body Butter Scrub (180g) and Body Wool Oil (100ml)

Co-Founder and Dairy Specialist Elaine Crosse expresses “Milk has been used as a beauty and medicinal treatment for thousands of years, we now have an opportunity to educate people on the powerful benefits of sheep milk for the skin. Sheep are special animals steeped in heritage. They are synonymous with Ireland, and have helped sustain wool, meat, and farming families for hundreds of years. However, we have yet to fully appreciate how beneficial their milk is. Sheep milk is one of the most nutritious milks available in the world today. You may be familiar with its use in cheeses such as feta and Roquefort. Our milk is also used in the renowned Cashel Blue Cheese. Sheep milk has a high concentration of proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins, and is truly a unique ingredient, not widely available. Our milk is single origin from our family-run farm in Tipperary. We take pride in what we do from the farm to producing the product – that means working to ensure we don’t create new problems for the planet. We want to connect people back to the land and support a new wave of Irish farming.”

Co-Founder and Pharmacist Nicola Lyons adds “Milk is a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, exfoliator, and has even been known to soothe sunburn. Lanolin, an extract from sheep’s wool, has also long been recognised for its positive impact on the skin. From working in pharmaceutical environments, studying and understanding a broad spectrum of dermatology concerns over the last decade, I am proud to be producing a powerful yet gentle collection of products that are suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.”

Love Island fans, prepare for heartache tonight!

It appears as though loyal farmer Will is succumbing to the temptations of Casa Amor.

Will had been growing from strength to strength in his couple with Australian Jessie in recent weeks, with both of them even admitting that they could see themselves falling in love. Fans of the reality series had been convinced that neither Will nor Jessie would give in to temptation when faced with six new Islanders during Casa Amor.

However, as the first look for tonight’s episode unfolds, it appears that viewers will be witnessing Will kissing new girl Layla on the villa’s private terrace.

In tonight’s edition of Love Island, both villas will be taking part in the ‘Raunchy Races’ competition, in order to try and win a party for themselves.

Following the challenge, Will and Layla have a private discussion on the terrace. “I feel like I gravitate towards you a little bit,” the 23-year-old farmer admits.

“Yeah same, which is cute,” Layla agrees.

Will then goes on to admit that he was “fuming” that she didn’t pick him for a kiss in tonight’s challenge, to which Layla responds: “You kissed two girls and I wasn’t one of them.”

“Were you jealous?” Will then asks. Layla confirms that she was, and then the short clip concludes with Will seemingly leaning in for a kiss with a beaming smile.

With him being a fan favourite and a previously very loyal Islander, fans of Love Island have been expressing their upset and anger at Will’s sudden change of heart.

“Will? It’s always the one you least expect!”, commented Twitter user @lisaa_ell.

Louise Thompson has opened up about her relationship with her fiancé Ryan Libbey, detailing the hardships they have faced recently.

The former Made in Chelsea star revealed their relationship has been ‘ravaged’ but they have ‘survived’ as a couple.

Since welcoming their son, Leo, into the world in 2021, Louise has been facing PTSD and crippling anxiety amongst other health issues. She has also been diagnosed with drug-induced lupus and was rushed to hospital earlier this month due to haemorrhaging.

Sharing a post to her 1.4M Instagram followers to mark Valentine’s Day, Louise explained, “Our relationship has been ravaged in ways you will never know, and I will never tell of our darkest moments. But we are still here remarkably. And ready to turn over a new leaf”.

“Strangely over the past month it has brought us closer together. It has forced us to really look at things”.

“We are living differently. We are having lots of meaningful conversations and we have a whole newfound respect for one another. Love is really all we have so we need to acknowledge it and use it cleverly. It’s almost like a super power”.

Fitness instructor Ryan also honoured his partner with a heartfelt post about what they’ve faced as a couple.

Sharing a family snap to Instagram he wrote, “I knew she had something tough in her, I saw that 12 months ago when we went through chapter 1 of this painful experience. Im proud of her response to this and how she’s refusing to give in to the setbacks. You're a warrior and I love you!”.

“I now spend most nights watching over Louise, making sure she's breathing next to me. In between that I wake with flashbacks of the horrors, things that no partner of a loved one should ever really see”.

Libbey added, “I have had professional help with this and I will continue to talk about it so it becomes less powerful and less consuming. We’ve endured a lot as a family, as many families do”. He then thanked his followers for their kind messages before closing off.

A recent study has discovered that women often have intimate photos or videos used against them during arguments with their partner.

The findings were revealed following an online relationship quiz organised by Women’s Aid. 20,000 people took part in the study, which looked at the effects of abusive relationships – particularly amongst young people.

Overall, almost 16,000 women confirmed that their partner has threatened to post intimate photos or images online, as a result of a fight.

Worryingly, 83% of women admitted that their partner has hit them once in the past, and they are afraid that it could happen again.

Coercive control was also an integral part of the quiz, with 72% of respondents noting that their partner is constantly demanding to look at their phone, and insists on knowing the passwords to all of their devices.

Lastly, almost 70% of women who took part in the quiz revealed that their partner has previously forced or pressured them into doing something sexual that they did not want to do.

Women’s Aid’s #TooIntoYou campaign is all about recognising the signs of coercive and abusive behaviour in relationships. The leader of the charity’s campaign, Mary Hayes, explained that, particularly in younger relationships, the signs of abuse can be difficult to spot, especially if it has become normalised behaviour.

“If this is seen as the norm, it sets a precedent for other unhealthy behaviours which can get worse and more dangerous over time,” she detailed.

“It feeds into a message that men are entitled to power and control in their intimate relationships with women,” she added.

Although legislation surrounding the posting of intimate photos has been tightened in recent years, the director of the National Women’s Council, Orla O’Connor, insisted that the quiz’s findings showcase that more education needs to be done.

“It really shines a light on the importance of the current review of our sex education programme. There is a lot to be done there, because we know how poor sex education is in schools,” she stated.

Many brides who bore the stress of postponed wedding days during the 2-years of Covid restrictions, couldn’t wait to get their nuptials solemnised and move on with their plans for a life together. However, one Covid Irish bride also took the opportunity to turn her happily ever after into a brand new business venture, by opening her very own bridal atelier.

Having recently celebrated her first wedding anniversary with her second husband, Laura Erskine, 44-years of age, is also basking in the afterglow of reaching another significant milestone, one-year in business as owner of Spellbound Bridal Couture. The public relations consultant, who has worked in the parenting field for the last 12-years and in financial services marketing for the previous decade, took stock during the pandemic with a mission to find more ways to bring joy into her life.

“The Covid restrictions gave me the time, space, and perspective to reconsider my career trajectory and what I wanted from my working and family life. I had young toddler and two older children whose needs were changing. While we all live together as a family, my thrice postponed pandemic wedding date signified a new chapter in my life. I found myself searching for a new beginning in more ways than one.”

“I wanted a better balance of family and work life, but I also wanted a creative outlet for my marketing and public relations skills that involved building and growing something for myself. I remember, being asked what my hobbies or passions were by various life coaches over the years. I would always say, that between the kids and work I didn’t have time for any. If asked what I did to relax or destress, I would be embarrassed to say going shopping. I love fashion, I always have. Right from the time I was 10-years old, and I set up my own hair scrunchie making business in school with my mum’s manual operated Singer sewing machine.”

In shifting her wedding date out three times during Covid, Laura also changed her wedding dress three times. Not content that she had found ‘the one’, social restrictions led her to trawl the web for the elusive perfect bridal gown, which she eventually found with a small French wedding dress designer. This journey fuelled her passion once again for fashion, so when she had to do her dress fittings via zoom because of restricted travel, along with the fact that the couture brand was not stocked in Ireland, the entrepreneur saw an opportunity.

“The idea of meeting brides at this special time of their life journey and helping them to find their perfect dress was something that just called to me. So, I negotiated an exclusive deal to be the only supplier of my couture French brand wedding designer in Ireland. Then 2-weeks after my wedding, I launched online with private appointments in luxury hotels nationwide. After much searching for the perfect location, I finally settled on Arklow, Co. Wicklow as the destination for my own bridal boutique, where I have been welcoming brides since last September. With a huge picture window on the Main Street and easy free parking outside the door, brides from all over Ireland are now visiting me in Arklow for their personal styling appointment.”

Weddings have long been a big family event in Ireland, with the pandemic simply making us appreciate these social occasions all the more. Brides are more determined than ever to wow their guests with a uniquely bespoke bridal gown reflecting their personal style. Spellbound Bridal offers a couture made-to-measure wedding dress service with a carefully curated collection of breathtaking bridal gowns.

“I have finally found my happily ever after in my husband, my blended family, and a business that sparks joy every time I meet a new bride.”

Blushing brides-to-be who are looking for something a little bit different, will be impressed by the wedding dress atelier, Spellbound Bridal Couture. The exclusive collection of gowns offers modern brides a unique range of distinctive wedding dress alternatives, blending show-stopping chic feminine accents with timeless romance. Whether you dream of an enchanting wedding dress with fairytale notions, or you are searching for a glamorous fashion-forward look, Irish brides are sure to fall in love with a gown from this exquisite collection.

“Because each bespoke dress is handmade to fit perfectly to the silhouette of the bride, design adjustments and additions can be made to suit her vision. I have had brides add secret pockets to house medical accessories or add removable elements to give them two and three differing looks throughout the day and night of celebrations. Our promise at Spellbound Bridal is to deliver an enchanting gown, in which you will both look and feel beautiful.”

Private bridal styling appointments for your stunning wedding dress can be booked directly with Spellbound Bridal Couture.

CarePlus Pharmacy wants you to make a date with your heart this Valentine’s Day. The network of independent pharmacies wants people to schedule a blood pressure check with them as a great first step towards positive and preventative cardiac health.

Heart disease remains one of the biggest causes of death in Ireland with almost 9,000 people dying from cardiovascular disease every year*. 1 in 4 men and women die from heart disease, but the good news is that 80 percent of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable.

Pharmacist and owner of CarePlus Pharmacy Clonsilla, Tom Ginnety, says a blood pressure check is a basic step in the right direction: “It’s such a simple thing to do, takes only a few minutes in one of our private consultation rooms and we have the expert training to explain what the readings mean. We look after customers with heart concerns all the time and we’re here to help and empower them to address heart disease prevention. As a key indicator and with proper treatment and management, you can control your blood pressure to help you live a long and healthy life."

Tom Ginnety

Tom says this is a great time to start a regular schedule of heart checks, but there are simple things to keep in mind all year round when looking after cardiac health:

Eat healthily: What we consume has a major impact on our heart health. It is important to reduce the amount of saturated fat and salt in our diet. We should take in more foods that are rich in fibre like fruit, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.

Drink less alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate and weakened heart muscle.

Get active: Exercise is effective in strengthening the heart muscles and keeping your weight under control. Obesity is a significant cause of heart disease.

Quit smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.

Check your cholesterol and blood pressure: High cholesterol and blood pressure are good indicators of whether you’re at risk of heart disease.

Manage stress: Be aware of your emotional health. Stress can put added pressure on your heart. People are living very busy lives and it’s important they take time out to reduce their stress levels and enjoy some relaxation time whenever they can.

Director of Health Promotion, Information and Training with the Irish Heart Foundation Janis Morrissey, said people in Ireland need to try and be proactive on their cardiac health: “A blood pressure check is so important because what the pharmacist sees on the screen might be the first indication that something isn’t right. Cardiovascular disease is sometimes known as the silent killer because there can be no obvious symptoms until it’s too late. Blood pressure checks are a vital tool in knowing just how healthy your heart is”.

Members of the public can drop into selected CarePlus Pharmacies to book a blood pressure check or any of the other healthcare options their teams offer. To find your local CarePlus Pharmacy go to www.careplus.ie.
