Since the release of the record-breaking Barbie movie, the brilliant film has been the talk of the town. Not only is Greta Gerwig's directing work fabulous and her cast incredible, but eagle-eyed fans have spotted some hidden (and not-so-well-hidden) references when watching it, which we think is genius.
Throughout the movie, Greta has managed to sneak in multiple Easter eggs that fans have caught onto and since we love that Greta's gone to the effort of doing it, we’re here to explain some of our favourite ones.
Space Odyssey
Credit: Warner Bros
The opening scene of the film is a clear reference and recreation of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: Space Odyssey. Instead of monkeys as in the original, little girls that are playing with their dolls can be seen in the derelict landscape before a giant Barbie (Margot Robbie) appears.
The Wizard of Oz
Credit: Warner Bros via YouTube
While Barbie is cruising through Barbieland, some The Wizard of Oz movie posters can be spotted on display outside the local cinema. The overall landscape and aesthetic of Barbieland can also be attributed to The Wizard of Oz, with many fans thinking the pink roads seen all over Barbieland are a nod to the Yellow Brick Road.
BAX
Credit: Warner Bros via YouTube
A fairly obvious reference but still a very smart one to include is the BAX airport that is shown at the beginning of the movie. Similar to the Los Angeles airport, LAX, Barbieland has its own BAX airport.
Pegasus statue
Credit: Lionsgate via YouTube
During the beach scene, viewers can see a pegasus statue between the sand and sea. This is a nod to the 2005 movie Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. This Easter egg is quite a niche one but old-school Barbie fans would spot the pretty mystical creature straight away.
The Matrix
Credit: Warner Bros via YouTube
Weird Barbie references the infamous 'red pill or blue pill' scene from The Matrix when offering Barbie the option to stick with heels in the life she knows or choose Birkenstocks to explore the Real World. As Neo (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix gets to choose between his ordinary life or learn something new, the similarities between the scenes are obvious.
Bratz
Credit: Warner Bros via YouTube
When Barbie heads to a highschool in the Real World to meet Sasha, she is met with the teen and her three best friends who aren’t particularly fond of Barbie. Bratz, a known rival of Barbie’s, is made up of four women, with one of them named Sasha… coincidence? We think not! This reference hasn't been confrimed by Gerwig, but we love the idea of Bratz being included in the film!
Hidden B’s
Credit: Warner Bros
There are SO many hidden ‘Bs’ throughout the film to represent the Barbie logo. Between clothing items and background decor, Greta Gerwig told Variety, “There must be thousands of Bs everywhere, because they also have, like, designs in the carpet”.
Sí se puede
Credit: America Ferrera Instagram
Gloria’s husband (who is played by America Ferrera’s real-life husband) says ‘Sí se puede’ towards the end of the movie, which Gloria says is a political statement- it translates to ‘It can be done’ and ‘Yes you can’. The phrase was said during the 2002 Disney movie Gotta Kick it Up! that America starred in as a cheerleader whose team would say the phrase in order to hype themselves up before performing.
The McWilliam bags collection is expanding this summer with the launch of the brand’s new Retro Range. Taking inspiration from decades gone by, the Retro Range celebrates the history of the original holdall design and comprises of timeless designs that are made to last seasons. Born as a sailing bag brand and packed with half a century worth of craft, the original McWilliam holdall can withstand the most challenging of conditions – on land or at sea!
By reimaging classic and previously loved designs, the new Retro Range was born. Available in three different styles, the new collection is a spin on the originals made across three different decades; the 70’s, the 80’s, and the 90’s. Each decade is represented by a holdall in a particular colourway that is available in size small, medium, or large. The new colourways offer a fresh, modern take on the earliest McWilliam designs to showcase the most popular styles during each decade and breathe new life into them.
The Retro Range includes the blue 70’s holdall that can be customised with a red, pink, navy, or black handle, the purple 80’s holdall with a navy or black handle, and the thin striped 90’s holdall with a navy handle. There is also the option to further personalise each bag with embroidery to cater to every taste and need.
Speaking about the new collection, COO Claire Morgan said, “Our bags are truly a bag for life, and we repeatedly see bags that are over 40 years old appear back in the loft to have a zip replaced or a bit of stitching reinforced. To celebrate these original designs, we decided to unveil the Retro Range to give the styles a second go and ensure the next generation have access to the hardest wearing and most durable style of bags.”
Handmade in a loft in Crosshaven Co. Cork, since 1971, McWilliam bags are renowned for their practical design and incredible durability. Sailors have relied on their sails for crossing oceans for many years, so it is no surprise that many bags remain intact and in use after 30 years.
The new Retro Range is available now on mcwilliambags.com. Prices start from €70.

3D nipple tattoos are growing in popularity in Ireland, offering breast cancer survivors, who want nipples, a very realistic and less invasive alternative to more surgery.
Leah Cheung, a permanent make-up and areola artist, based in Wexford, has been doing semi-permanent make-up for three years and recently began her journey to doing areola tattoos.
Having met with cancer patients who had lost confidence or were saddened by the absence of nipples on their reconstructed breast, Leah studied the specialist technique of using tattoo ink to create a new nipple.
Leah Cheung
"I just want people to know that they CAN feel confident again, with a new set of nipples, after surgery. Patients are delighted with the realistic 3D effect created by the tattoo, and can select the exact shape, positioning and colour they want”, Leah Cheung says.
The young Wexford woman charges €150 for one areola tattoo, and €200 for two. 10% of profit is also donated to national and local breast cancer support and research charities.
Usually with a mastectomy, the nipple is removed along with the breast. For those who did not have nipple reconstruction, the option of a permanent 3D tattoo is quick, practically painless and very effective, Cheung explains.
“The artist applies colour pigments that match the natural areola, having discussed size, shape, and placement beforehand. The actual tattooing takes about thirty minutes per nipple, and the whole procedure is no more than two hours, including a dressing and aftercare instruction”.
The tattoo isn't at all painful, for most people, Leah Cheung says, as sensitivity has lessened after a mastectomy. Both men and women opt for nipple tattoos and, where needed, numbing liquid is applied to ease discomfort, and healing balm is provided.
Candidates must not be going through chemotherapy or radiation, at the time of the tattooing, and should generally leave the aesthetic procedure until at least 6 to 12 months, post-surgery.
“Everyone’s situation and type of reconstruction and scarring is different; but most people can have their nipple tattoo created around a year post-surgery, to allow for optimal healing time,” Leah says.
The price of the tattoo includes an after-care healing gel, to be used regularly at home, and a ‘top-up’ at 6 weeks. The follow-up is to make any colour change or adjustments needed, so the patient is happy with the end results, and the tattoo artist can check healing.
Healing should take around 10 days, with some mild scabbing or flaking.
Of all the creative work in permanent make-up and tattooing, Leah Cheung says that nipple tattoos are an incredibly satisfying job to undertake.
“It is humbling to help people who have undergone a mastectomy to feel sexy, confident and beautiful again, after the frightening journey of breast cancer,” she says.
Leah Cheung can be contacted on 087 1939593, by WhatsApp or online at www.leahcheung.com.

The Glass Skin trend endures; possibly becoming the trend of the decade – with its many variations: stained glass skin, cloud skin or bouncy skin. Deep cleansing is the foundation stone of all these looks.
Cosaint’s Award-Winning Skin Cleansing Brush with Eye Massage deep cleanses on the level only an in-salon facial can achieve; buffing away full coverage foundation, eye-makeup and grime to reveal a fresh glowing complexion.
The Skin Cleansing Brush with Eye Massage contains 0.6mm skin-friendly and super antibacterial silicone bristles. The flexible brush head fits perfectly for the face, targeting hard-to-reach areas such as the under-eye skin, the vibrations help promote lymphatic drainage, reducing facial puffiness.
The eye massage setting warms to 42℃ to combat puffiness, fatigued dry eyes and dark circles, both toning and relaxing the eye area before sleep, when some regimes (like washing the skin with facial wash) can wake one up.
These actions, all performed gently by the Skin Cleansing Brush with Eye Massage contribute to a foundation of radiant and beautiful skin that subsequent products and make-up glides over effortlessly – the prerequisite to beautiful glass glowing skin.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made a surprise appearance!
The couple have remained largely out of the limelight for the majority of this year, following their documentary and book releases.
However, the former working royals have now made a public appearance to congratulate some inspirational young people.
A short video was recently released, in which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can be seen calling a few of the recipients of the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund.
As part of their Archewell Foundation, Prince Harry and Meghan are members of the Youth Power Fund Advisory Committee.
In short, the fund is described as being “an investment in young people that are shaping a more equitable and inclusive technology future.” The fund currently works with 26 organisations around the United States, which is where the royal couple are currently residing.
The brief video clip appears to showcase the couple sitting outside their home in California, as they made phone calls to several of the fund’s recipients.
“Thank you for all of the work you’re doing. It’s huge, it’s making an enormous impact,” Meghan praised one of their callers.

Later on, Prince Harry chose to mention the pair’s two children – four-year-old Prince Archie and two-year-old Princess Lili.
"Thank you for doing everything that you do, our kids especially are incredibly grateful,” he teased.
Meghan laughed and added: "They don't know it yet, but they will!"
Many of the projects that the fund is involved in centers around online safety. In May 2022, Prince Harry spoke out about the topic during a virtual appearance at the 5Rights Foundation’s Global Child Online Safety Toolkit.

"My kids are too young to have experienced the online world yet and I hope that they never have to experience it as it exists now. No kid should have to," the 38-year-old argued.
"My two little ones are still of the age of innocence. Sometimes I feel I can keep them away from the online harms that they could face in the future forever but I am learning to know better,” he added at the time.
“The way I’m gonna miss this show,” another penned.
“Season 4 can’t come soon enough!” a third fan added.
In the official description for the upcoming season, Netflix teases: “Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again,” they write.
“Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus…” they hinted.
The brand-new images come almost one month after it was confirmed that Sex Education’s fourth season would be its last.
Writing to fans, creator Laurie Nunn explained the creative choice: “This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate.”
Sex Education’s final season is due to launch on Netflix on September 21.
Sharing a snap of herself in her underwear to her 162K followers on her nutrition Instagram page, Fernutrition, the 32-year-old has had a candid chat about her body.
She penned, “Finty’s arrival has left me in awe of my body all over again. I carried the flame and birthed the fire”.
“I really wasn’t sure whether to share this picture because it’s a funny thing isn’t it? People have so much to say about other people’s choices with THEIR bodies. This is what MY BODY looks like post birth”.
Ferne continued, “I know some people will likely say I look great or I don’t need to put pressure on myself. Let me clear – I’m not. However I’m ready to feel more confident and comfortable in MY own skin & I want to inspire other women to feel the same”.
“I won’t be exercising until I’ve been given the all clear after my 6 week check but I can still lose weight and have energy and prioritise my well being”.
She went on to say, “Our Healthy Body Healthy Mind Focus starts on Monday 7th August and it’s the perfect combination of mind and body. I feel so ready to nourish my body, to be fuelled so that I can be the best for my two girls, to work on my mindset, to be kind to myself”.
The honest admission about her postpartum body has been applauded by many of the former reality TV star’s fans and famous pals.
Former TOWIE star Danielle Armstrong, who just had her second child, wrote, “Looking beautiful my darling the female body is powerful. I’m sure this post well defo inspo many women to join you on your journey”.
“Still stunning mate”, penned former Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison.
A fan of Ferne’s added, “Most beautiful picture ever. The woman’s body is an unbelievable thing. You showing and letting everyone see how you are as a person and spreading the love for ourselves with everything you do in ur life is unbelievable. You are an Angel. Beautiful inside and out I see that”.
Prada's legacy of utilitarian chic in corporate uniforms has been a defining element since Miuccia Prada's transformative leadership. She turned the once-dormant Italian luggage brand into the thriving luxury fashion powerhouse it is today. However, Prada is now embarking on a groundbreaking venture into unexplored territory: the realm of beauty, introducing Prada Beauty's exquisite range of cosmetics and skincare products.
This latest expansion places Prada alongside esteemed counterparts like Christian Dior and Chanel, esteemed names that have long held a significant presence in the beauty industry with dedicated skincare and cosmetics offerings. While Prada is a relatively recent contender in this domain, it's noteworthy that their existing personal grooming collection, predominantly comprising fragrances, aftershaves, and lotions since its inception in 1990, has consistently demonstrated robust sales performance.
The step into the beauty sector is a logical progression, given the prevailing trend amongst fashion houses to diversify their product portfolios while cultivating a lifestyle that resonates with their brand identity. Prada's Group CEO, Andrea Guerra, describes this move as a pivotal milestone, facilitated by a strategic collaboration with cosmetics giant L'Oréal.
Prada Beauty's new offerings uphold the fundamental principles that have propelled the brand's meteoric rise throughout the turn of the millennium and beyond. Similar to their ready-to-wear line, the Prada Beauty cosmetics and skincare range will remain unisex, underscoring their commitment to inclusivity and contemporary ideals.
SKINCARE – PRADA AUGMENTED SKIN
In a perpetually evolving environment full of stimulants and stressors, Prada Skin allows skin to adapt as fast as the environment changes by empowering its inherent resilience.
The skin’s ability to renew, regenerate, and reinforce itself is augmented with Prada's Adapto.gn Smart Technology, a multi-potent complex that helps skin adapt to its environment in real-time. This precision technology originates from natural actives called adaptogens, a family of 15 rare plants that have existed for over 400 million years while withstanding extreme conditions across geological ages. In synergy with dermactive and dermocosmetic active ingredients like Proxylane, hyaluronic acid, vitamin CG, and ceramides, adaptogens were then reinvented into a breakthrough technology for Prada’s adaptive skincare.
The Prada Skin range includes:
Prada Augmented Skin The Cream – Day & Night – 60ml full product, 60ml refill
The cream boosts the skin’s primary functions with Adapto.gn Smart Technology to renew, regenerate and reinforce. The formula constantly rejuvenates skin with dynamic plumpness, translucent radiance, and resilient firmness. With over-time use, skin is optimised as Proxylane restores moisture; hyaluronic acid recharges skin volume to smooth out texture; vitamin CG provides antioxidant protection to revitalise skin and improve radiance; ceramides increase skin hydration and promote optimal barrier function.
Prada Augmented Skin The Serum – Face & Eye – 30ml full product, 30ml refill
Also harnessing the power of Adapto.gn Smart Technology to recalibrate the skin’s natural functions, the serum revitalises skin structure. Hyaluronic acid works to refine skin texture, enhancing volume and density, while the antioxidant properties of squalane even skin tone to reveal a translucent radiance.
Prada Reveal Skin Optimizing Foundation – 30ml full product, 30ml refill – 33 shades
Prada Reveal Skin Optimizing Foundation enhances the skin in three dimensions – tone, luminosity, and texture – to reveal soft-filtered skin in-real-life. Instantly upon wear, the foundation creates a unified skin expression with a soft matte finish using the advanced IRL(In-Real-Life)-micro-filter technology. This patented hero technology exclusive to Prada optimises light diffusion with a smart molecule that micro-crystallises onto skin, revealing a naturally radiant and seamlessly filtered complexion with breathable 24-hour wear.
The foundation comes in 33 flexible shades with buildable coverage to provide customisable wear across an inclusive spectrum of skin tones and undertones.
Prada Augmented Skin The Cleanser & Makeup Remover – 125ml
To complete the full skin optimisation routine, Prada offers the Augmented Skin Cleanser & Makeup Remover. The 2-in-1, cream-to-foam cleanser is coded with Adapto.gn Smart Technology™ and a potent blend of amino acids, glycerine, and Lactobacillus ferment to purify skin texture while optimising suppleness and radiance.
From cleanser to foundation, Prada offers a holistic and customisable routine based on skin’s unique needs.
MAKE UP – PRADA Colour
Prada Colour is fashion curated. The lipsticks provide two perspectives on matte, inspired by the ubiquitous mattified lips seen on Prada runways since the brand’s first Ready-to-Wear show in 1988. Drawing from the Prada fashion archive that holds 27,000 textiles and patterns, the eyeshadow palettes showcase an unexpected curation of pigments in dynamic finishes.
Prada Colour is also tech augmented. Avant-garde technologies are at the core of Prada’s SMART TECH-XTURES™, designed to provide hyper flexible, blendable, breathable yet durable wear with over-time care.
The Prada Colour range includes:
Prada Monochrome: The New Refillable Lipcolour
In 26 fashion-curated shades rendered with two different matte finishes, Prada’s refillable lipstick range opens doors to explore all the shades of you. The new range is designed with a refill system that allows for 76% less packaging use.
With a textured bullet that resembles Prada’s signature Saffiano leather, the Hyper Matte Durable Weightless Lipcolour offers one-stroke payoff with up to 12-hour wear. 13 profound colours are formulated with a black base to reproduce the Saffiano leather’s high-density colour depth and a sophisticated matte finish that suit all skin tones.
With a textured bullet that mirrors Prada’s iconic Re-Nylon fabric, the Soft Matte Buildable Weightless Lipcolour offers adjustable, buildable coverage. 13 luminous matte colours are formulated with a white base to recall the luminosity of the Prada Re-Nylon in soft, diffused colours that flatter all skin tones.
Prada Balm
Prada Balm (pictured above on left) is a lip-optimising formula with a universal Prada-Green shade and a natural matte finish. Worn alone or as the optimal primer underneath Prada Monochrome, the balm enhances the natural look of the lips with bifidus extract and jojoba oil that provide moisturisation and durable care. With continued use, lips become smoother with up to 24 hours of lip comfort.
Prada Dimensions: The New Refillable Eyeshadow
Prada Dimensions are created using a low-pressure injection process with Micro-Pixelä pigments, which allow one-stroke payoff with greater resolution and colour density. The hybrid creamy-powder finish eyeshadows blend and layer without falloff, while their skin affinity provides weightless comfort and up to 12-hour durable wear.
Each of the 6 palettes are equipped with a mini high-density foam applicator and a mini blending brush with high-density fibres and bevelled edge for versatile, on-the-go use.
Prada Beauty Tools
Prada Beauty Tools are artistry-engineered essential, multi-use tools. The 9 versatile brushes and Foundation Diffusing Sponge are designed by Prada makeup artists and created by fine arts manufacturers. Faux fur-inspired, the advanced synthetic fibres are hand-crafted one-by-one to provide high-performance makeup application, sensoriality and durability.
RETHINKING BEAUTY WITH TECH-AUGMENTED SERVICES
Prada’s exclusive beauty-tech services integrate human expertise with technological innovation to conduct advanced skin analysis, revealing its current condition and its potential for optimisation. These services are led by patented software and resulting, in-depth visualisations of skin, enabling a deeper decoding of the skin, unveiling insights into untapped potential.
Prada Skin Decoder
Prada innovates a skin diagnosis device across both skincare and skin tone. Through the diagnosis of skin parameters, the Skin Decoderä is designed to break down and illustrate clinical signs of the skin – whose adaptive capacities are at the heart of Prada’s skin methodology – whilst revealing your true skin tone. The diagnosis explores the current nature of the skin and gives us tech-based insights to advise on how to optimise the skin through Prada’s adaptation-driven formulations.
Prada Colour Explorer
A virtual makeup try-on service featuring the Prada Colour catalogue in full, the Colour Explorer offers enhanced customisation options for Prada’s eye and lip colours.
Undoubtedly, the expansive scope of this new collection necessitates a significant investment, a hallmark of any genuinely premium cosmetics brand. However, what sets Prada apart from its high-end counterparts is its embrace of sustainability, evident through the refillable design of each product, coupled with their incorporation of technologically enhanced services.
While the anticipation for exceptional products is inherent with a brand like Prada, these supplementary advantages bestow upon Prada an intangible quality, a certain 'Je ne sais quoi' that distinguishes it from comparable brands.
Olivia Attwood has been opening up about the possibility of having children in the future.
The former Love Island star tied the knot to her husband Bradley Dack back in June and has been chatting about the prospects of starting a family together.
Olivia also revealed she would film the birth of her first child if she and Bradley do decide to have little ones.
While speaking to MailOnline, Attwood admitted she is ‘obsessed’ with her career, but said she ‘knows her mind will change’ about having children in the future.
Speaking about potentially filming herself in labour for TV, Olivia explained, “The idea of filming my birth is scary but yes in some capacity it would be natural to share that, and I'd want to”.
“I think that would be fun and the viewers would have grown up with me and to see me making life would be really cool”.
The former I’m a Celeb star then spoke out about people asking women if they want children and how she feels about the question.
“I know a lot of women don't like being asked about children and I understand that so I can't speak for other people”.
“But for me personally I don't mind being asked because when you share so much of your life, and I let people ask me everything so it would be weird for me to then say, 'You can't ask me that'".
“I am in my 30s and it does get jarring to be asked that question again and again as a woman, but I understand why people do”.
Olivia then revealed, “For me, I am so obsessed with my career right now and so obsessed with Brad that I don't wake up thinking about kids, but I know that might change and I will want them someday”.
Olivia and Bradley got married surrounded by their nearest and dearest with a lavish ceremony held in London. The lead up to the wedding and their big day was filmed for their reality show Olivia Marries Her Match.
The father of a teenage girl who lost her life in a Co. Monaghan car crash has opened up about his heartbreak.
17-year-old Kiea McCann and her 16-year-old friend Dlava Mohamed were making their way to Largy College’s debs ball on Monday evening, when the car they were travelling in crashed.
The two girls tragically did not survive the accident. The car’s other passengers, Dlava’s sister Auin (18) and Oisín Clerkin (18), are still in hospital. The driver of the car, Anthony McGinn (60), is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.
Now, Kiea’s father has chosen to open up about his daughter’s untimely death.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, Frankie McCann recalled the moment that he got a phone call immediately after the crash.
“I got out there as quick as I could and tried to revive them with a woman that was there also. I had to move from my daughter to her best friend, but there was nothing I could do. All I could do was ask that they be put lying together,” he explained.
Mr McCann then went on to detail how much the late teenagers had been looking forward to their debs ball that evening.
“There was great excitement here in the house before they went out. We had food and champagne and balloons, and it was going to be a great night,” he recalled.

“They could have got a coach out to the hotel, but they wanted to drive in style, and my friend has a white BMW and he agreed to drive them. We had put red bows and everything on the car,” he added.
Kiea was the fifth eldest in a family of 10 children. Speaking about his daughter, Mr McCann went on to note that Kiea attended her first ever motorbike rally in Kildare on Saturday, just two days before her tragic death.
“I have a few bikes and Kiea loves them, so we went to the rally and she really enjoyed it,” he said, concluding that the teenager had been looking forward to the future and was “going to college in September to study childcare.”
Kiea's funeral is due to be held this Thursday in Clones.
