Yearly Archives: 2014

The time has come again – it’s January and everywhere we turn, we’re bombarded with adverts calling for us to lose weight and get healthy.

A positive message, but where were they when we were stuffing the fourth mince pie of Christmas Day into our mouths?

While a new year can make us feel invincible, small changes are actually more effective than a massive lifestyle overhaul because you’ll be more likely to maintain them.

So here is our small change proposal; dust off the blender, head to the fruit and veg section and watch your hair get shiny, your eyes clear and skin glow within two weeks of this small daily change. Yes, it is Green Smoothie time.

Below is a sample recipe, but feel free to add/take away anything you like. Remember that it’s better to include far more veg than fruit, which is full of sugar. The fruit should be there to add a little bit of flavour and some vitamin C.

You should keep some sliced banana in a lunchbox and a bag of spinach in the freezer as it is handier and makes the smoothie nice and cold.

Serves One

What you’ll need

1/2 frozen banana

Handful frozen spinach

Handful of kale

1 kiwi

1/4 Cucumber

1 Celery Stalk

Juice of One Lemon

1 tsp Flaxseed

1 tsp grated Ginger

1/2 tsp Cinnamon (optional)

1 tsp Honey (optional)

What you’ll need to do

Place all ingredients in a blender and cover with water (or coconut water if you prefer). Blend until smooth and drink. Place leftovers in the fridge for any hunger cravings later on.

Waking up to dark circles is never a great way to start the day. Instead of running to your make-up kit and sweeping the problem under the rug, take a look at the things you have in your kitchen – you’ll be surprised by how fast home remedies can conquer those dark circles.

Tea bags
When cooled down, tea bags can work like magic on your eyes. Place a teabag on each eye while they’re still moist and then relax and let them do their thing. After 15 mins, give your face a splash of water and pat it dry to see the difference.

Metal spoons
This one always seems to shock people, but cold spoons can actually help with dark circles. Put two metal spoons in the freezer for a couple of hours and then when they’re cold enough, place the curved side of each spoon on your eyes. You will start to see a change as you do this.

Cucumbers
If in doubt, take the traditional route – it never fails. Put a slice of cucumber on each of your eyes for 10-15 minutes and relax. Your eyes will thank you for it!

This is carbonara made healthy – ditch the cream for crème fraiche to save on fat and calories. Using wholewheat spaghetti also makes the dish more diet friendly, as wholewheat has a much lower Glycemic Index (GI) than regular white pasta meaning it releases energy slower.

Serves 2

What you’ll need:

  • 160g wholewhat spaghetti
  • 2 streaky rashers, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 egg
  • 250ml half fat crème fraiche
  • 70g frozen peas
  • salt
  • pepper

What you’ll need to do:

  1. Cook the wholewheat spaghetti according to the instructions on the packet. When ready, set aside.
  2. Heat  1 tbsp rapeseed/olive oil in a large frying pan and add the chopped rashers.
  3. When the rashers are cooked to your liking (this could take anywhere between 10-20mins) stir in the peas and allow to thaw.
  4. Add the cooked spaghetti to the rashers and peas, mix to combine.
  5. In a separate bowl beat the egg lightly and stir in the crème fraiche , salt and pepper.
  6. Whilst the pan is still hot stir in the egg and crème fraiche mixture and combine well, do not over heat it as the egg will scramble, just get it good and hot.
  7. If the mixture is stiff add a little boiling water.
  8. Serve hot.

Top tip: Sprinkle some parmesan or walnuts on top if you like. If you want it to be extra healthy you could swap the streaky rashers for chopped bacon medallions.

Just over one hundred days ago, Lakeisha Shurn decided that she wanted to change her life.

Being overweight had left her with low self esteem and a lack of confidence so she decided to do something about it.

Every day she filmed herself working out in the gym and with the help of her friend she created this inspiring video.

Lakeisha hopes that it will “open a door for others who are trying and can’t seem to get anywhere.”

However, the inspirational woman is not quite finished. Thanking her supporters on Reddit, she said: “The next 100 days will show just how far I’ve come. And, the next 200 days will prove just how strong I truly am.”

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. If you’re in doubt, take a look at these two ‘perfect’ female faces – one picked by women and one picked by men.

Participants in news research were asked to build the perfect face, based on who they consider to be the most beautiful females in the world.

Men prefer blond hair, full lips, strong cheekbones, less prominent forehead and fine eyebrows. Women on the other hand like raven hair, a strong nose and forehead, dark brows and a narrow bone structure.

In terms of celebrities, men love Shakira’s blonde hair, Miranda Kerr’s nose, Jennifer Aniston’s forehead, Kate Middleton’s eyebrows and Angelina Jolie’s cheekbones.

The ladies who took part in the survey had very different ideas. They loved Freida Pinto’s black hair, Keira Knightley’s cheekbones, Cara Delevinge’s bushy brows, Blake Lively’s strong nose and Scarlet Johansson’s lips.

We don’t know about you, but to us the men’s ‘perfect face’ is just a little bit terrifying.

Not long ago, Miranda Kerr was linked to James Packer, the Australian Millionaire who is a mutual friend of the model and her ex husband Orlando Bloom.

However, more recently it seems she has set her sights on a new man. That new man being an unnamed guy she had a few drinks with on Friday at the Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle Hotel.

According to a source, the couple were chatting and he kept leaning in towards her. Apparently, the pair left the bar after they were told they would have to pay $30 to watch a jazz show.

The former Victoria Secret’s model split from her three year marriage to Orlando last October although the pair have remained on very good terms for the sake of their adorable son Flynn.

While both Miranda and Orlando are dating other people, the mum-of-one admits: “We’re still very big parts of each other’s lives. There’s no reason for us to be anything but a united front. We still love and care for each other deeply.”

Star of The Hangover Justin Bartha married his girlfriend Lia Smith on Saturday and miraculously, no one turned up to the ceremony with a tribal tattoo across their face.

They celebrated their special day with a small intimate ceremony at sunset on the island of Oahu with just 60 people.

His hangover co-star Ken Jeong was in attendance, although we’re sure he was on his best behaviour. Reese Witherspoon, her husband and Jesse Eisenberg were also there to help toast to the couple’s future.

Justin, who is from Hawaii, met his new wife when he took part in a Pilates session in the LA gym where Lia works. The couple, who tend to kept their private lives private, were first spotted together this time last year in Hawaii.

It seems Justin, who split from Ashley Olsen in 2011, doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet and the couple got engaged back in May.

We wish them a very happy future together…and we want her shoes!

Nigella hasn’t had much luck lately, but if news of a new movie is anything to go by, things may be looking up.

According to reports, the 54-year-old’s life may be turned into a movie, with Angelina Jolie as frontrunner for the lead role.

“Angie had planned to take a lot of time off next year but this role is very tempting. She has been gripped like everyone else by all the drama surrounding Nigella these past few months and thinks she is a remarkable woman.”

The last few months have been chaotic for the domestic goddess and shocking to fans, so the film would make for some interesting viewing.

The British TV chef split from her husband, Charles Saatchi, at the end of last year after he was photographed with his hand around her neck. After that story broke, she then then had to deal with rumours of drugs and abuse. Most recently, the celebrity chef had to endure a trial, which saw her former assistants, Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo, accused and cleared of fraud.

If Angie does take up the role, we’re sure the movie will be big, but if not, we can’t see it being a box office hit.

Despite the rumours, Emma Watson is not engaged to her long-term boyfriend Will Adamowicz. In fact, the former Harry Potter star actually split from her beau duringthe summer, although they kept it quiet.

Her representative says: “Emma and Will separated last summer and are no longer in touch.”

The couple met when they both transferred from Brown University in Rhode Island to Oxford in 2011.

Emma previously admitted that she found the American dating scene very different from the British scene saying: “I remember a few nights into Brown [University], this guy just being like, “I like you. You’re great. Let’s go on a date. Let’s do it.”

The young actress previously admitted that she found it a culture shock when she went to Brown saying: “They’re very like open and very straight-forward – but they wear flip-flops and I don’t know if I like that”

It seems Emma’s heavy work schedule is to blame for the split as it took its toll on the young couple.

Bruce Jenner and Lamar Odom now have more in common than simply being sports stars – they are both dealing with the breakdown of their Kardashian marriages.

In a show of solidarity, Kris Jenner’s ex-husband, Bruce, has been offering advice and helping Lamar during his split from his wife Khloe Kardashian – Kris’ daughter.

Bruce and momager Kris split at the end of last year after 22 years of marriage, so we’re sure he has plenty of advice for Lamar. In fact, it seems he has a lot to say. The former Olympic gold medallist spent over an hour on the phone on New Year’s Day try to keep the basketball star upbeat and positive.

Bruce reportedly told the 34-year-old to forget everything that happened in 2013 and to stay away from websites and gossip shows, explaining: “it will eat you alive and ruin any progress if you stay in the past.”

Khloe split from her husband of four years amid rumours of cheating and using illegal drugs.

We’re not quite sure how Kris Jenner will feel about this one.

We’re convinced that time moves at a much faster speed first thing in the morning.

After your alarm goes off, you lay your head back down for ‘five minutes’ and the next thing you know, there are mere seconds left to get ready. You rush around, barely make it out of the house on time and of course, you end up forget something.

With this D.I.Y door hanger, you can be as late as you like and never forget something important again.

What you need:

  • A sheet of craft foam
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
  • Duct tape
  • Small carabiner
  • A sticky pad

Method:

  1. Cut out the craft foam as shown in the diagram.
  2. Stick together the front and back panels and then make sure the inner pocket is in line with the bottom edge of the back panel
  3. Wrap some duct tape on edges of the pocket.
  4. Fold the bottom part of the front panel over this pocket and tape together. Also tape the sides so that the organiser is secure.
  5. Use the two-sided tape to attach the sticky pads above the doorknob hole and if you’re very forgetful, punch two little holes in the outer pockets so you could link a ball chain through them. With a mini carabiner, you could use this for your keys.

If you don’t want to spend hours working out when trying to achieve a thinner face, you don’t have to.

You can skip all that and get that chiselled look in the snap of a finger – for a few hours anyway.

With the right tools and techniques, you can  minimise roundness in your face by applying a technique called ‘contouring.’

  • Get yourself a matte bronzer that is three or four shades darker than your skin tone and a flathead brush.
  • To contour, make a ‘fish face’ and apply the product in the shape of the number ‘3,’ starting from the side of your forehead to under your cheekbones and then backwards from the cheekbone to your jawline.
  • By contouring these areas you are minimising roundness and creating a shadow that will make your cheekbone stand out more.

This simple process only takes seconds and does wonders for your face.
