Yearly Archives: 2014

It can be easy to get bored of drinking regular water on a daily basis, especially, if you are someone who tries to live by the ‘six glasses a day’ rule.

If you find it hard to drink water because you think it’s tasteless, here is a way you can add a bit of flavor to your water without turning it into an ‘unhealthy’ drink.

Just add a few slices of cucumber to your water and feel your body refresh.

Since cucumbers have a 95% water content, they do a great job in hydrating the body.  Some people find that cucumber water is a great substitute for sweet drinks, tea and in extreme cases, coffee.

As well as keeping your body hydrated, cucumber water can help with weight loss, digestion and more importantly, it’s an effective hangover cure.

Try some cucumber water – your body will love you for it.

A woman can never have enough shoes– you know it, I know it, everyone knows it. But, when it comes to storing them, not everyone will know exactly where to start.

Finding space in a cluttered room can pose a new challenge altogether. To start 2014 with a clean slate – and a clean room , here are a few ways you can keep your shoes safe and sound.

Hanging storage
With one of these hanging on the door, you will never forget about a pair of shoes you own (it can happen). This storage system makes your shoes accessible so you can easily grab your favorite pair on the way out.

Hanger system
The Carrie Bradshaw in you will have too many shoes to count, so if you really need more space you can use lengths of pretty wool and wire hangers to hang your shoes.

Clear storage bins
Keep your favorite pairs of shoes in clear storage bins. This will keep them away from dust.

Under the bed
For those pairs that aren’t very loved (there’s always one or two), hide them away in an organised shoe storage box that will fit under the bed.

Old household goods
Give some relevance to items you don’t use at home. You could use an old wooden rack as a shoe rack for ballet pumps and footwear that doesn’t weigh much.

Kale is one of the best foods you can eat, it’s higher in iron than beef and contains powerful antioxidants. It’s also no longer a challenge to find kale in Irish supermarkets, as can be the problem with some other superfoods.

These kale chips can be used in place of crisps to give you that crunchy, salty fix you need without casting your healthy regime aside altogether.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 handfuls of kale, washed and dried very well
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin live oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

What you’ll need to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and dry the kale well, divide it into bite sizes.
  3. Massage the kale with the olive oil, getting it into all the crevices. Put each piece onto the baking tray.
  4. Place the kale in the oven, checking frequently because there is a thin line between crispy and burnt with these bad boys. Overall, it should take approx. 5-7mins.
  5. Sprinkle with the salt and paprika and serve.

Trying to pick yourself up after a bad break-up may seem impossible, but while things are crap now, they will get better.

You should also keep in mind that the guy was a jerk anyway. Remember when he used to do that really annoying thing? Exactly.

To get you on the road to recovery, we’ve come up with some top tips to help you get over your ex.

Rule 1: Let it out

If that means crying in front of a close friend, do it. You’ll feel much better and you’ll be less likely to have an episode of hysterical crying on the bus.

Rule 2: Keep busy

You might not be feeling very social, but the busier you are, the less time you have to think about your ex. Oh well, you’ll just have to organise another night of cocktails with the girls.

Rule 3: Remove, block and delete

Having access to his social media pages will do more damage than good. If you remove him from your Friends/Followers/etc, you’ll be less tempted to check up and see what he is up to or even worse, contact him.

The winter can play havoc with your lips, causing them to become hard and cracked – not good if you have a hot date coming up, especially in Valentine’s season.

Stick with us and you will be irresistibly kissable in no time at all.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

By writing it three times, we’re hoping you’ll understand the importance of it. The skin on your smackers is prone to drying so it is vital that you keep them well moisturised. Keep a lip balm handy and apply regularly.

Exfoliate

Use a soft toothbrush and gentle circular movements to gently remove any dead or flaky skin. You can give your lips a lift while recycling your old brush.

Keep hydrated

Drink plenty of water to prevent your skin becoming dehydrated. Coffee or tea doesn’t count towards you daily fluid intake.

To keep your pout perfect, avoid licking, picking, peeling and biting the skin.

This year’s Golden Globes saw some impressive movies and TV shows go head-to-head for those shiny gongs.

There wasn’t too much surprise when it came to the main movie awards, with Best Drama going to 12 years a slave and American Hustle winning Best Comedy/Musical.

There was a murmur of recognition when it came to Best Actor in a Drama, won by Matthew McConnaughey for his powerful portrayal of Ron Woodruff in Dallas Buyers Club.

Staying with the fellas, Leonardo Di Caprio won Best Actor for a Comedy/Musical for his role as corrupt and wild stockbroker Jordan Belfort.

Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine, while Amy Adams was awarded a globe for her portrayal of con artist Sydney Prosser.

Jennifer Lawrence and Jared Leto were awarded Golden Globes for their supporting roles in American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club respectively.

Gravity seemed to disappoint in its predictions of numerous awards however Alfonso Cuaron did walk away with the Best Director award for the 3D science-fiction thriller.

Finally, Disney’s newest contribution Frozen won the Golden Globe for Best Animation.

Oh Jen, you really do keep us young.

The starlet has spoken about her disappointment following the kissing scenes she shared with on-screen husband Christian Bale in new movie American Hustle.

American Hustle director David O. Russell, who was spilling the beans on Jen’s real thoughts on her scenes with Christian Bale, recalls her saying: “I finally get to make out with Christian Bale and he’s a really fat guy. He’s Fatman, not Batman.”

To be fair, Bale isn’t exactly in the best shape of his life in the film and is a long way from his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in the Batman franchise, but for someone who got make out on screen with Bradley Cooper, we feel you have nothing to complain about, Jennifer!
