first dates

We're super excited about First Dates Ireland returning to our TV screens tonight.

Like many people watching the show, after five minutes, we think the daters are our own best friends and we cheer them on through our TV screens.

So, that's why we were delighted to hear that a couple from the last series are still together. Yay!

You might remember Ciaran Farrell from last year – he was a self-confessed shy man, but of course, viewers loved him even more for it.

He was set up with Katie Greene on the show, and now, the couple are just about the celebrate their first anniversary of being a couple.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on his radio show, Katie, who now lives in Toronto, explained their situation.

"I knew when I was doing the show that I was moving to Canada, so in the beginning, we took things quite slow. Then I moved to Toronto in June and we were in constant contact, talking every day.

"We actually had a great date, a really natural and fun date. Everyone thought Ciaran was way more shy than he was but people don't always appear as they are [on the show]."

And Ciaran joined in on the conversation too, adding that even though they went on a few dates before Katie moved away, they only became official when she moved to Canada.

"It all fell into place when I visited Katie [in Toronto] in October. We went to Niagara Falls, we had Thanksgiving over there, we went gambling in the casinos in Niagara… At the end of the trip, I asked her if she'd like to be my girlfriend."

Guys, we can't deal. Ciaran also added that going on First Dates was "one of the best things [he has] ever done."

We're even more excited to tune in tonight now.

Among the sometimes nervous, sometimes cocky, and sometimes downright charming First Dates hopefuls on the super-popular Channel 4 show, another love story has been bubbling beneath the surface for months.

And as any First Dates die-hard will know, that story involves two of the show's waiters – Sam and Cici.

While we thoroughly enjoyed watching total strangers attempt to make a go of things over fillet steak and red wine, there's no doubt we were even more intrigued by the obvious spark which exists between Sam and Cici.

And last night, as the season finale drew to a close, countless Christmas wishes came true as Sam revealed just how much he felt for Cici…. Love Actually style.

We'll let Twitter take it from here…

She is one of our favourite members of the Gogglebox crew, and now we're going to be joining Scarlett Moffatt as she looks for loveeee.

Yep, the reality star is joining our other fave TV show, First Dates and we just can't wait to see it.

Scarlett will appear on the show for a celebrity special, and we can only imagine her no-nonsense attitude being hilarious on a first date. If anyone even tries to talk BS, Scarlett will destroy them. It's going to be so brilliant.

She'll be joined by TOWIE's Jessica Wright, Esther Rantzen, and Paralympian Will Bayley in the quest for some celeb lovin'.

There's no word on when the episode will air yet, but we all know we're in for a good one.

We. Can't. Wait.

First Dates Ireland was a major success, with over 250,000 people tuning in to watch the carnage each week.

But, even though it became so popular so quickly, it failed to match up ANY first daters.

Some agreed to meet up for a second date – yet that is how far it went, leaving some viewers and the show's producers very disappointed.

One of the show's daters recently spoke to the Irish Sun about her experience: “The producers have rung me a few times, being really nice but dying to know if I was going to see my date again.

“They seemed disappointed when I told them I wasn’t. They seem to be keen for one of the couples on the show to begin a relationship, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

Trying to make things sound a little better, the First Dates Ireland spokeswoman said: “Simon and Tynan from episode one went on a second date and a couple from this week’s episode also went out on a second date.” However, not one punter on the second show wanted to see their date again.

“Unfortunately that is just the nature of the series. We do our best to match our daters and give them the best possible chance at finding love but it doesn’t always happen."

However, you can NOW apply to take part in the second season of the show (yes!), just sign up here.

First Dates Ireland aired its second show on RTÉ2 last night, and we just can't get enough of the Irish humour.

As much as we love the UK version, the Irish show seems to come up with absolute gems.

From Gemma who ended up on a SECOND date with Mark (who didn't seem to remember her), to Kias who wore no socks and asked how long will it take Ciara to sleep with him (erm), it was definitely one to remember.

Here are the Twitterverse's best reactions to the antics in The Gibson Hotel last night:

When it comes to a first date, there are certain things we all know that you just DON'T talk about; politics, religion and your ex's….bits.

But if last night's episode of First Dates is anything to go by, it looks like that particular memo never reached poor old Paddy, and it's fair to say Twitter is NOT impressed.

After being paired with 37-year-old Heather, the 42-year-old graphic designer soon learned that his new date was a vegetarian, and then it all goes to hell in a bucket.

Making what has to be the biggest faux pas in First Dates history, Paddy decides to compare the smell of fish to the smell of his ex's…well, you know what we're getting at here.

"Years and years ago, I was dating this girl – not dating, I was seeing this girl – and she was quite domineering and I found it a bit scary. I won’t go into all the details. But… it stank. And you don’t like fish," the ever-charming Paddy told his gobsmacked date.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter had an ABSOLUTE field date and happily went to town on the man who actually thinks the smell of female genitalia is appropriate first date fodder.

Seriously Paddy, seriously?!

Dating etiquette can be something of a mystery, especially if you're a) just out of a relationship, b) meeting someone on a night out or just c) really in the mood for the ride.

It's hard to know exactly how long you're 'meant' to wait to have sex with a new partner, and while there's no hard and fast rule, a new survey shows that most of us do hang about a while before jumping into bed.

According to research by relationship site IllicitEncounters.com, the average new Irish couple waits until the fourth date before sleeping together.

And for most of us, first dates are just reserved for chatting and maybe some flirtatious eye contact – because the majority of couples wait don't even lock lips until their second date.

However there is always an exception to the rule of course, with 17% of men and 13% of women saying they've had sex on the first date. We'd love the data on how many of those first 'dates' occurred in Coppers…

As for getting serious and saying the L-word, it seems that's something we're content to wait a whole lot longer for.

Yup, the first 'I Love You' comes after at least 14 dates in the majority of cases, with women admitting they'd wait even longer to say it just so they wouldn't have to drop the L-word first.

Almost three-quarters (72%) of men say they were the first to talk about 'love,' compared to just 28% of women.

What do you think – do the figures match up to your own experiences?

Everyone who watches Channel 4's First Dates knows that the show would not be complete with the suave operations of maître d' Fred.

From his sexy accent, his organisational skills and his words of sheer wisdom, Fred has a pretty giant role to play in the operations of the hit dating show.

So naturally all eyes have been on RTE as we waited the announcement of just who would be filling Fred's rather large shoes on the Irish version of First Dates that will be soon hitting our screens.

And our new dinner host is…. *drumroll please*… introducing Mateo Saina.

Well, hello there…

Matteo was a shoo-in for the job as the maître d' at Dylan McGrath's top restaurant Taste as well as being from Croatia (he will therefore, hopefully, add a bit of continental class to proceedings.)

"I am so excited to be involved with First Dates Ireland," said Mateo on his new exciting television role.

"From my experience, I can tell whether people on a date are confident or not, whether they are nervous, and my job is to help them feel relaxed.

"Everyone that walks into this restaurant deserves a chance to find love, that’s what First Dates is all about. It’s a great feeling to see two people making a connection and if I can help make this happen, then that’s my job done."

First Dates is due to hit our screens later in the spring.

Cancel all your plans tonight people because First Dates is back.

So stick on your favourite onesie, grab a cuppa and prepare to revel in all the inevitable madness that is to take place in the First Dates restaurant.

Fred and the gang will be back on Channel 4 this evening at 10pm helping a new batch of lonely singletons to find 'the one'.

In case you needed any incentive to watch, here are several reasons why you shouldn't miss the brand new episode:

1) You will pick up some stellar one liners

Because "slaying the males" has become our official catchphrase of 2016.

2) You will recieve words of wisdom from Fred

The accent definitely helps.

3) You will probably curl up in a ball and cringe with awkwardness

Because some of those rejections are simply brutal.

4) You will probably also snot yourself laughing

Watching a date go from bad to worse will never cease to entertain.

5) And if you are not crying at a sob story by the half way point, you have a heart of stone

THEY JUST WANT TO BE LOVED.

6) You will inevitably become totally infatuated with someone on the show

Sam <3 <3

7) And you will most definitely feel good afterwards

It's simply impossible not to.

Having been trying unsuccessfully to fill the gaping hole in our Thursday evening television schedule as a result of Channel 4's First Dates coming to an end, we welcome ANY follow up stories from our favourite love birds.

And after a string of successful romantic pairings on this season of the show, it has just been announced that one of the the couples got engaged over the Christmas break.

And it's none other than our favourite fairytale duo, Adam and Dan! Nawh…

According to the Mail Online, Dan popped the question on Christmas Day which also happened to be Adam's birthday.

The duo first appeared on the show back in November where they seemed to immediately hit it off bonding over a mutual idolisation of Kylie Minogue.

This announcement marks the second engagement to come out of the popular British show as Scott proposed to Victoria on the season finale back in December.

"Hopefully in years to come we’ll have our first date to watch but we’ll also have the proposal and we can show it to our kids in the future," said Scott of his reality show romance.

Relive the magical moment when Dan and Adam first met below.

We can all admit that First Dates is a major guilty pleasure.

And while last night's episode went extremely well in the romance department, it also took an unexpected (but BRILLIANT) turn, which prompted Twitter to go mental.

We met Sasha, a 25-year-old woman from London, whose date was running very late.

The resident waiter, Sam, immediately spotted Sasha when she walked in the door.

As it turned out, unfortunately Sasha's date stood her up, which isn't a nice feeling at all. Sob.

It looked like Sasha was heading towards Heartbreak City, until our barman in shining armour stepped it.

And everyone just LOVED him for it:

The date ended up going really well.

And everyone declared it their new romance novel:

And the pair are still dating (best news ever):

It's possibly the most cringe-inducing show on TV, and now it's coming to Ireland.

Lucky singles will have the chance to meet their perfect match thanks to the Irish version of First Dates, the Channel 4 show which sees complete strangers on sitting down for a romantic (read: hilariously awkward) meal together.

The First Dates restaurant will be open for business in early 2016, and producers at Coco Television are currently looking for applicants.

So if you're single and up for some match-making (or know someone who is), apply here.

Who knows, you could be the lucky girl getting hit with chat-up lines like this one:

Or this one:

Or you might even get seated next to this charmer:

Bring it on.
