Christmas is a great opportunity to show our friends and family how much we love them with a thoughtful present. When the gift helps raising money for a charitable cause, it only makes it even more meaningful.

In 2011, Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services launched a cook book called The Mixing Bowl, which contained a collection of recipes contributed by the residents and clients of the Extended Care Unit and the Community Reablement Unit in Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6. This was a great success and raised over €95,000.

Six years later, The Mixing Bowl, Second Helpings is finally out, offering a special collection of tried and trusted recipes generously shared by 67 patients, residents, volunteers and staff of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.

Some of the featured recipes include a scrumptious Lemon Butter Cake, a yummy Peach Cobbler, a hearty Boatman’s Stew, as well as a Speedy Banoffee.

The Mixing Bowl, Second Helpings costs €15 and is available in all good books shops, in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services both in Harold’s Cross and Blackrock or online

He’s widely known for his playboy persona on E4’s hit reality show Made in Chelsea, but since becoming the focus of a steroid scandal last year, Spencer Matthews seems to have adopted a new way of life.

Appearing on This Morning today, the 27-year-old television personality explained how his shock departure from the 15th series of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here inspired him to become more involved in the Michael Matthews Foundation, a charity named after his older brother who died aged 22 after becoming the youngest British person ever to climb Mount Everest.

“The Michael Matthews Foundation was made to help provide children in remote areas with an education, who without a helping hand wouldn’t have had an education at all,” explained Spencer.

“My brother passed away about 18 years ago and the foundation was set up shortly afterwards because we want his name to live on in a nice way.”

Offering a synopsis of the events leading to Michael’s death, the foreign exchange broker said: “He experienced some difficulty [while descending Everest].  The weather took a bit of a turn.  We all knew the risks.”

“I was only ten at the time which is why the foundation has been going a little while but I’m getting far more involved with it now…I’m keen to take the charity to the next step.”

Back in May, Spencer spoke candidly about his brother on Loose Women when he told the panel that he thinks of Michael’s determination at times when he is struggling.

In his autobiography, Confessions of a Chelsea Boy, Spencer noted how a lack of information surrounding his brother's death continues to devastate the family.

While we all know the occasional Grinch, by and large Christmas tends to bring out the best in people.

This observation is as applicable to celebrities as it is lay people, as The Killers have just released a new holiday album to help raise funds for Bono’s charity (RED), an organisation which aims to eradicate AIDS in Africa.

According to Rolling Stone, Don’t Waste Your Wishes features songs which the band previously released in support of (RED) as well as a newly recorded cover of Bing Crosby’s I’ll be Home for Christmas.

The album – which is exclusively available on iTunes and Apple Music – features Elton John, Jimmy Kimmel and a former teacher of band frontman Brandon Flowers who taught the musician the meaning of Crosby’s famed Christmas track.

A limited edition Don’t Waste Your Wishes CD will also be sold online from December 9.

Following her exclusive sit-down with SHEmazing in June, Jacinta Kelleher's incredible tale of resilience was picked up by national and local publications and broadcasters.

In the aftermath, the Dublin woman admitted to being overwhelmed with the stream of good wishes she received. Now, and still basking in the support of countless strangers, she is using her newly-raised profile to thank the one organisation she feels made a real difference since her diagnosis with liver cancer three-and-a-half years ago.

"Walking through the doors of an Arc Cancer Support Centre was the best thing I ever did," Ms Kelleher says now.

"It's a safe place for me and so many other people dealing with cancer. They have picked me up more times than I can say and I honestly wouldn't have gotten this far without them."

Arc Cancer Support Centres offer support to men, women and children affected by cancer and those who care for them. The support is holistic and complements medical treatment with counselling, psychological support, complementary treatments and care.

Jacinta had previously told SHEmazing that while she has "bad days" – she is also "eternally grateful to Arc" for everything they have done for her and her loved-ones – including her husband of three years, David.

"Mentally as well as physically, going through numerous surgeries is tough, and without Arc I just don’t know if I could keep going," she had revealed.

For 2016, Team Arc aims to raise €1,000 – and has already surpassed the €600-mark.

A Lurgan teen who bravely shared her cancer story through Facebook is being remembered today through an online fundraiser which was created by her mother in her honour.

Rebecca Haughey passed away on Thursday September 8 at Belfast City Hospital after a lengthily battle with cancer and less than two months after she publicly declared her determination to battle the disease in a heart-wrenching social media post.

Upon learning in late July that her cancer was fatal, Rebecca took to Facebook to share a powerful open letter in which she described the initial shock of hearing that her cancer was no longer responding to treatment and her renewed determination to use a combination of mainstream and holistic treatments to battle the disease.

In a post marked “feeling determined” the popular teen wrote: “My consultant told me that my white blood cell count was back up and it looked like the cancer was working too fast for my treatment to catch up with it.  She doubted there was much she could do for me.”

“Understandably, I was in a state of shock.  I was basically just told that I was going to die.  All I could say was, ‘No.  This can't be happening.  No.  There has to be something you could do.  No.  No.  No.’”

Choosing to use the devastating news as a motivator, the Armagh student continued: “That news gave me the kick up the back side I needed to make me more determined than ever to succeed.  To beat this ruddy cancer that had taken over my life.”

“I told the doctor to put me back onto the steroids and other meds to keep my white cell counts under control. I decided to become more strict with my new alkaline diet…[and] that afternoon my mum…got me hemp oil.”

“It's going to be a long, difficult journey ahead but through Hell or high water, I'm going to get through it all and prove to my consultant that this will not beat me.”

Through a Just Giving page set up in Rebecca’s memory, her mother Colette Haughey has encouraged people to support a number of charities which helped her family throughout Rebecca’s illness and reminded people how her daughter would want to be remembered for who she was, rather than as a victim of cancer.

On the page – which has already raised over £1,500 – Ms Haughey described her daughter’s “strength, determination and relentless hope and positivity” as “infectious” before acknowledging the importance of Friends of the Cancer Centre, Cancer Fund for Children, The Boom Foundation and CLIC Sargent.

“In honour of his 23rd birthday, we are collecting donations for  the Way Youth Zone in Wolverhampton, a purpose-built facility for the city's young people aged 8-19 (and up to 25 for those with disabilities).”

Cheryl’s boyfriend eventually heard about the fans’ plan through his mother and took to Instagram to express his gratitude.

Alongside a picture of an article about the fundraiser, Liam wrote: “My mum just showed me this who’s ever idea that was thank you so much what an amazing birthday present” (sic).  Awh!

Fair play to the fans for coming up with such a positive way of marking the singer’s special day.

Just when we thought it was all over and done with, Amber Heard has fired back at Johnny after he donated money to charity in Amber's name, and as well as that, she apparently wants her ex-hubby to give $14m away rather than the agreed $7m.

According to TMZ, Amber's team said that Johnny is not being truthful about his latest move because he will get a charitable tax deduction when he donates the moola to ACLU and the Children's Hospital of LA.

Amber's people told the gossip site: "If Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honour the full amount by donating $14m to charity, which after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7M payment obligation to Amber.

"We would also insist that the full amount be paid immediately and not drawn out over many years," they added.

It doesn't seem like this is going to end anytime soon!

Earlier this month it was announced that Amber Heard and Johnny Depp had officially ended their high-profile divorce case with a $7 million settlement being awarded to the Texan actress.

And while most people would take the money and try to move on from months of courtroom drama, Amber admirably made the decision to donate the entire sum to two charities of her choice: The American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

According to TMZ, her now ex-husband Johnny is “heaping praise” on the Rum Diary actress for deciding to donate the sum, and has already sent cheques to both organisations on Amber’s behalf to begin the process which will eventually see each group receive $3.5 million.

A rep for the Pirates of the Caribbean actor told TMZ: “Following Amber Heard's announcement that her divorce settlement was to be divided equally and gifted to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union, two exceptionally deserving and important charities, Johnny Depp has sent the first of multiple instalments of those monies to each charity in the name of Amber Heard, which when completed will honour the full amount of Ms Heard's pledge.”

“Ms Heard's generosity in giving to these wonderful causes is deeply respected,” they continued.

The news comes after months of allegations during which Amber had a restraining order issued against Johnny – which has now been dropped – and claimed that the Golden Globe winner had domestically abused her.

When filing for divorce the 30-year-old model stated “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for wanting to end her 15-month marriage.

The nasty divorce between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp is finally over, and it looks like Amber is totally ready to move on with her life.

Speaking to TMZ, the actress said that she's going to give all of the money that she received in the divorce to not one, but two charities.

"The donation will be divided equally between the ACLU, with a particular focus to stop violence against women, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where I have worked as a volunteer for the past ten years," Amber explained.

While speaking to the site, she also said that it wasn't about the money in the first place.

"Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves."

Amber added, "Hopefully this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most."

We always knew Niall Horan was a bit of a sweetheart but the 1D member really outdid himself today when he teamed up with professional golfer Justin Rose to raise  a whopping £800,000 for charity.

The two-day Horan and Rose Charity Event consisted of a star-studded gala dinner at The Grove in Watford last night, followed by a golf event this morning.

And it was all to help raise funds and awareness for Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens who received £560,000 from the total raised.

The rest of the money will be split between Irish Autism Action and the Kate & Justin Rose Foundation.

Olly Murs joined Niall and Justin on stage at last night’s dinner and gave a live performance to the lucky attendees who then tucked into grub served up by Jamie Oliver and his team from Fifteen restaurant.

Speaking after the event, 22-year-old Niall said: “It was an incredible night. I had a brilliant time and I’m overwhelmed by how much money we have raised for the charities."

"Thank you to everyone that has supported the Horan and Rose Event this year.  We definitely want to do more!" he added.

His Ryder cup-winning companion said: “I’m delighted to partner with Niall on such a fantastic event, for a cause that we are both very passionate about."

"The amount raised was truly amazing and, due to the generosity of everyone who attended the event, we will make a huge impact on Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens, who fund research into finding cures and kinder treatments for children’s cancers.”
