As the population in Ireland ages, according to the latest Census figures, as a nation we need to prioritise our health and wellbeing. A new survey released today by Vitabiotics’ Well Range supplements shows that 1 in 3 believe that physical and mental wellbeing are the two most important factors for a healthy lifestyle. The research also found that 1 in 5 people admit to feeling unhealthy and all age groups report a shift from good to less good health over the past six years, with Gen X revealing that they are the generation that feel the unhealthiest.  The Vitabiotics Well Range is encouraging everyone to make their health and wellbeing their number one priority this year.

The survey also revealed that Gen Z places less importance on physical health and more on appearance, while Baby Boomers place a lot of importance on physical health. Men prioritize physical health over mental health, yet 1 in 4 men don’t take regular vitamins. 44% believe strengthening the immune system is the most important benefit for taking daily supplements, however 28% never or rarely ever take supplements.

Wellwoman is the original vitamin developed just for women, which has been formulated for the demands of modern life and to give support to the areas of health which are most relevant to women making it the ideal supplement. Wellwoman contains a spectrum of micronutrients for all-round nutritional support including Evening Primrose and Starflower Oil, as well as vitamins B6, B12 and iron which contribute to normal energy release, making this supplement ideal for women who lead hectic lifestyles, juggling work, family, and social commitments. Wellteen Her and Him has been developed especially for teenagers aged 13-19 years, it provides a comprehensive range of vitamins and minerals to help support daily nutritional requirements including vitamins B6, B12 and vitamin C which contribute to normal energy release and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Max Benjamin, Ireland’s leading producer of naturally made scents has launched a completely refreshed approach to their iconic brand. With a loyal customer base spanning almost two decades, the Irish family run business is rebranding to reflect changes in the market, to continue meeting their customer needs and to bring their unique brand story into the product range.

Max Benjamin has been a dynamic force in the Irish candle and diffuser industry since inception. Max Benjamin was idealised on a trip to the US by founder Orla Van den Bergh, and many of the signature scents are inspired by Orla’s brother Mark and his travels around the world. Mark, as the Creative Director for Max Benjamin, has created some of the brand’s most iconic scents, taking inspiration from lands far and wide. David, the managing director and brother to Orla and Mark, has grown the brand into overseas markets over the years, bringing the combination of luxury Irish production with globally inspired scents to new customers internationally. The brand has organically developed its own nomadic spirit, and that is the true inspiration for the new Max Benjamin direction, the meeting point of first-class Irish products with globally inspired scents for a Life Uplifted.

Mark, Orla & David Van den Bergh

Customers can expect to see many of their favourite scents such as Dodici, French Linen Water and True Lavender alongside some new fragrances such as the heady Irish Leather & Oud. The products will continue to be packaged in sustainable materials. Customers will see products such as candles and diffusers presented in luxurious matt boxes in a palette of soft colours, each one specific to a particular scent, with the refreshed Max Benjamin type in black, and the newly introduced motif. The motif was designed with a combination of two elements in mind, tiles found within the famous Florentine apothecary which gives the signature Italian Apothecary scent its name, and the gorse flower, synonymous with the surrounding Enniskerry location, making a unique geometric shape, soon to be identifiable with the Max Benjamin brand. The products themselves will be presented in smoky glass, grey in colour to represent the granite filled valley that Max Benjamin candles are created in. The Max Benjamin logo and motif are embossed on the glass in gold, and candles come with a chic wooden lid. The new product presentation is designed to create a luxurious look and feel, while still retaining its décor neutrality, allowing the products to visually sit into any interior scheme, with the scents creating an undeniable atmosphere.

The range is now a solid ten scents, with the team at Max Benjamin wanting to refine the offering to bring customers items that are truly beloved, as well as something new. Candles are now larger, at 210g with a 50 hour burn time and will retail at €28. New and improved three-wick candles are 560g with a burn time of 65 hours, retailing at €40 and available in three scents, Lemongrass & Ginger, White Pomegranate and French Linen Water. The diffuser range comes in ten scents also, 150ml in size and retail at €35, lasting anywhere from 3-4 months. Those who have become accustomed to staple items need not worry, as part of the rebrand car fragrances (€10), scented cards (€5) and diffuser refills (€20) are all still available and now in all 10 scents.

While the first phase of the rebrand is rolling out in early summer, Max Benjamin is not only focusing on a fresh direction for their classic product range, but also looking to the future and bringing a superior range of products to their customers. Hand and Body care sets will launch in the summer, available in classic scents, perfect for complementing the candles and diffusers of Max Benjamin scent filled homes. Excitingly, Max Benjamin is also soon to launch a new entry product range for those who are new to the brand or living in smaller spaces but still want to add signature Max Benjamin scents. Aptly named the Discovery range, the collection will feature five new scents in smaller vessels. While on the whole Max Benjamin is affordable, especially when compared to other brands in the space, the soon to launch Discovery range is even more so, allowing first time customers to trial the brand for less, eventually developing into lifelong customers.

The new Max Benjamin brand is available with select luxury retailers nationwide and online at www.maxbenjamin.com.

The Multi Award winning Sean Taaffe Group have launched their first in-house developed, own brand retail range, Sean Taaffe Professional. The first product, the ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner, is available now from selected retailers nationwide, in salon and online on www.seantaaffe.com. Priced at €19.95, the ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner is a game changer in the management, styling and condition of hair. It is the result of 3 years of extensive development, testing and research, advanced hair science and harvesting the knowledge of 35 years practical salon experience. It is available in two formulations – 1 for thick/coarse hair types and 2 for fine/vulnerable hair.

The new Sean Taaffe professional range has been created by hairdressing professionals for hairdressers and their clients.  The range includes:

ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner 1

With the ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner 1, you can expect intense hydration for thick, stubborn or coarse hair without weighing it down. Whilst other leave-in conditioners and moisture sprays can leave hair feeling oily or full of silicone, this ST leave-in conditioner promises to hydrate hair whilst giving it a weightless finish – leaving hair softer, taming flyaways and making it easier to manage.

ST Light Moisture Spray Leave in Conditioner 2

The ST Light Moisture Spray Leave in Conditioner 2 is suitable for fine, vulnerable or coloured hair that needs some extra love, without weighing it down. This spray promises to nourish and detangle hair, without damage, making it easier to blow dry and style.

Sean Taaffe

Sean Taaffe is recognised as one of Irelands leading hairdressing professionals and industry entrepreneurs. He also has an international profile teaching worldwide, most recently in India during which time he gave 11 seminars in 11 cities to over 1,100 delegates in 11 days! The Sean Taaffe Professional range will be launched in India this Autumn.

Sean Taaffe commented,

Over my 35 years hairdressing I’ve seen many products come and go and I’ve always had an interest in the products we use as these can make our job much easier and in turn, make the clients hair much healthier and easy to manage. When Covid hit and all our salons were closed I turned my attention to creating products that I felt were either missing in the market or could be better. There was a niche in the market for a good leave-in conditioner spray, as currently there were many leave-in creams which can be heavy on hair and very few high-quality sprays available. I partnered with a leading pharmaceutical development company to work on developing the perfect leave-in conditioning spray. Initially we planned on creating a lightweight conditioning spray that could hydrate amazingly but be suitable for all hair types.

However, over the course over extensive testing, we found that one formulation would not be suitable for all hair types, as fine hair and thick coarse hair have such varying needs in terms of quantities of the hydrating agents, so we committed ourselves to developing two products that would meet the needs of different hair types. Over the course of intensive 18 months of ongoing refinements and extensive testing across our entire team of 50, we are proud to introduce the ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner as the first product in the range and know that hair professionals and clients will see the dramatic difference it makes towards improving the condition, texture and management of hair.”

Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty was established as a one-man operation by Sean Taaffe in his native Killorglin in 1989. Always at the forefront of industry innovation and education, as well as a focus on excellence in customer service, the Company has continued to experience exponential growth and now has locations in Killarney, Tralee and Killorglin, with a team of 50 talented professionals. The Sean Taaffe Group have won nearly every industry accolade over the years including Salon of the Year across multiple competitions and the coveted Hairdresser of the Year across the 2 main national competitions.

Other awards include the hairdressing business awards and more recently photographic and training awards. Sean was named in How To Cut It a worldwide hairdressing podcast, of the top 100 most influential hairdressers globally. The Sean Taaffe Group also host international training courses in both their Tralee academy and in their flagship Killarney salon. The Groupshigh standing internationally enables them to bring hair heroes such as JB Mazella (considered by many as the greatest hair cutter in the world), Andrew Dunne and Sophia Hilton, to name but a few, to showcase their skills in their salons in Kerry.

The ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner (1 and 2) are the first products in the new Sean Taaffe Professional retail hair range and additional products will be launched and available in early 2024.

The bottle is 100% recyclable and ST Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner (1 and 2) is vegan. It is also paraben and cruelty free.

Two new studies commissioned by An Post Money in January and May 2023 show the psychological impact the spiralling cost-of-living crisis is having on the public. Financial planning for the future has taken a back seat with a sharp focus instead being placed on managing escalating day-to-day living expenses.

In support, An Post Money has launched a number of initiatives to help put financial power and control back into the hands of the public. An Post Money announced that its Money Manager smart budgeting tool is now available for FREE to everyone in Ireland, not just An Post Money customers. The Money Manager budgeting tool allows users to securely link their current accounts and credit cards in one place so they can track their spending in real time. Spending and budget alerts show users when they are approaching their personally-set limits enabling consumers to adjust their spending accordingly, while useful insights, like unusual transaction patterns, and insights including splitting spending into various categories so money can be mapped and tracked on an ongoing basis.

Existing An Post Money customers can use their ten-digit User ID to access the app once downloaded. New customers who wish to use Money Manager should download the An Post Money app today on the App Store or Google Play and link their accounts.

In collaboration with leading financial advisor Paul Merriman, An Post Money offers practical financial advice and guidance to support the public with their biggest financial concerns and giving control over finances. The new An Post Money Digital Hub at www.anpost.com/moneyhub provides videos, blogs and advice on how best to manage key financial matters. Blog themes range from tackling utility bills, managing mortgage/rent payments and grocery shopping efficiencies to getting off the debt ladder, claiming important expenses, protecting incomes with insurance, and purchasing big ticket items. An Post Money has also selected five households to receive free financial guidance from Paul Merriman over six months (March to September 2023) in achieving their financial goals while teaching them about the importance of financial planning. Each will share video details of their personal journeys such as saving for a first home deposit and getting mortgage ready, starting a pension, building an emergency savings fund, or working towards a specific financial goal, inspiring the nation to get on board and take back control of their finances. Follow the progress of the five participants and avail of free financial tips, information and advice from Paul Merriman, putting financial power back in their hands through www.anpost.com/moneyhub.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative Paul Merriman said ‘The research findings are stark yet unsurprising and prove that An Post Money Manager is exactly what people need right now. As the purse strings tighten at home, attention turns to managing the day to day and making sure we keep the lights on and put food on the table. However, I am concerned to see so many putting their long-term financial plans on the back burner because, what might seem like a low priority now will quickly become a big priority in five or ten years and this is something we are going to address over the coming weeks and months.

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting our five participants and the great thing is that each of their stories is relatable for so many. While we can’t sit down with the entire country, we hope that people across Ireland will be able to find similarities between their situations and those of our participants and take the actionable tips and advice and apply these to their own circumstances’.

Debbie Byrne, Managing Director of An Post Retail said “We are steadfast in our commitment to offering An Post Money customers a better digital banking experience to manage their everyday banking needs, enabling them to take control of their finances and build better financial habits. I am delighted to announce that our Money Manager smart budgeting tool is now available for free regardless of who you bank with, not just An Post Money customers. Money Manager allows users to securely link their current accounts and credit cards all in one place. They can track their spending in real time and set up spending and budget alerts to help them stay on track, while giving them a deeper understanding of their financial behaviour over time. This new offering demonstrates our commitment to financial empowerment, helping consumers to make the most of their money, particularly as they try to navigate the rising cost of living. We are also delighted to partner with Paul Merriman to offer consumers hands-on advice and real-life financial tips”.

Research Results

The research reveals a sense of a lack of control as people in Ireland try to keep afloat in the short-term but are stressed over their inability to prepare for their own future and the future of their children. Unexpected outgoings such as medical bills and motor or household item repairs are also an increasing cause of anxiety. The study shows how concerns have risen between January and May 2023 with no sign of receding. Financial anxiety has increased significantly across several areas with concerns around grocery bills seeing the largest rise as the area consumers are most concerned about. Home energy remains the top financial concern facing Irish people despite energy credits and moving out of the winter period. Accommodation costs remains a key challenge facing the country with a surge in those worried about their rent and mortgages, while renters are finding it harder to get on the property ladder. Against this backdrop, there is frustration amongst some that incomes are not rising at the same rate as inflation, while others are concerned about how far their current or future pension will go if inflationary trends continue.

  • Close to nine in ten (87%) respondents expressed one or more financial concerns for the year ahead, up two percent since January 2023
  • Home heating and energy bills represents the largest financial concern causing 65% of respondents to worry, up from 60% in January 2023. One in four (23%) say this is their main financial concern, down 11 percent as winter ended.
  • With grocery price inflation hitting a record high in April 2023, 63% are worried about grocery bills, up from 57%. Close to one in five (18%) say this is now their main financial concern, an increase of 38 percent since January 2023.
  • 45% of respondents are worried about accommodation costs (rent or mortgage payments), up from 37%. Over one in five (21%) say this is their main financial concern, an increase of 17 percent.
  • Motor expenses are a cause of worry for close to three in five (58%), up from 55%
  • One in two (51%) are concerned about insurance costs, up from 42%
  • Over four in ten (42%) of respondents are concerned about medical and dental expenses, up from 33% in January 2023

Highest financial anxiety demographic breakdowns

Gender – Women record increased concerns over a wider range of areas since January, but especially around grocery food shopping bills (67%), home heating/energy costs (67%), and medical/dental expenses (47%). Women are significantly more likely to be concerned about groceries or medical bills than men. Both men and women recorded increased concern over both Insurance payments and mortgage/rent payments.

Age segments – The 35-54 year old age segment has recorded a significant increase in concerns across a multitude of areas, with mortgage payments (36%) a particular source of anxiety. This cohort is also more likely to show higher concern for credit card bills (23%), compared to other age segments. 18-34 year olds are far more concerned about the cost of rent (44%) and transport costs (25%). Those 55+ show the highest concern about home heating and energy costs (68%) and home insurance costs (31%) relative to younger cohorts, but significantly less concerned about rent (9%) and mortgage payments (12%).

Social grade – Those in the C2DE social grade are experiencing higher levels of anxiety than the ABC1 social grade around grocery and food shopping (66%), personal loan repayments (26%) , while ABC1 grades are more concerned about mortgage payments (30%) and health insurance (34%).

Provinces – Those living in Dublin are feeling the pressure of rent (33%) and mortgage payments (31%) plus credit card bills (23%) more than those living outside of Dublin. Those living in Munster (66%), Connacht and Ulster (65%) are feeling the pinch more in motor related costs than those living in Dublin (50%) or the rest of Leinster (55%).

Longer-term financial concerns

A seemingly unrelenting financial squeeze is casting a long shadow over people’s long term financial plans and sense of security. Respondents expressed deep concern that they were unable to put money aside for savings plans, pensions, education funds, emergencies, holidays, home improvements and retrofits or important occasions.

Jessie J has reached out to thank fans for their support after she opened up about her experience when having a C-section.

The Price Tag singer welcomed the birth of her baby boy last month and has spoken out about planning for a ‘natural birth’ but her son had other ideas.

After sharing a video of herself dancing before going in for her C-section surgery to her 13.1M Instagram followers, Jessie explained, “I spent 9 months prepping for a natural birth. Strict food, the epi no, yoga, swimming, hypnobirthing methods. I had a tens machine, a birthing comb, I wanted a pool birth ideally with no medication".

"BUT this was MY plan to stay disciplined and focused. I knew full well it could and would most likely go in a completely different direction”.

After revealing she was “open to surrendering to the safest way for my baby boy to arrive”, Jessie revealed that when going for a scan before she hit 40 weeks, her son was “completely the wrong way around and stuck as he was a little chunkier than your average and long”.

“I did everything to try and turn him for 2 months but he said ‘Nah mum I wanna make an entrance out the roof, not the front door’. I was advised to have a planned C section for the safest birth. This video was taken 5 minutes before I went down to surgery. I went into active labour the night before and feeling all the feels but mostly just excitement for us to meet our baby boy”.

“I guess I’m sharing this because so many people have said ‘Do you feel like you missed out on the birth you wanted?’. I had a birth and it was everything I wanted because I got him at the end of it, that’s all that matters”.

The 35-year-old was flooded with messages of support from fans and famous faces including Loose Women’s Stacey Solomon and P.S I Love You’s Hilary Swank.

After being overwhelmed with positive messages from her Instagram followers, Jessie took to her Stories earlier today to admit she “didn’t realise the impact” her post would have on other mums who were made to feel ashamed or guilty for having a C-section.

Speaking about C-sections, Jessie admitted, “It is by no means an easy way out. It is a birth. Politely f*** anyone who made you feel anything different. You had a belly birth. Whether it was a choice or not you did or had to do what was right for your baby and for you to be healthy and arrive safely. Nothing else matters. Hugging you all. We did it”.

“Thank you for all the love and support you have shown me throughout this whole process. I will only focus on that…I embrace my new life, my new body, my new world with no apologies”, the new mum added.

Jessie is yet to share photos of her bundle of joy online and hasn't announced his name to the public yet.
