Yearly Archives: 2023

by

The past few years we've come to really appreciate staycationing here on our little island. Groups from all over the country – be it friends or family – have been exploring parts of Ireland in ways they have never before. There is a feeling of togetherness and unity in this mass exploration, as if we have all decided to go on the same adventure. Here are 35 ways you know you are on a holiday in Ireland…

1. You continuously update your weather app the week before you depart, with the location set to your destination.

2. You tell everyone that you don’t care if it rains for the rest of the year, as long as your week away is dry.

3. You have come to terms with the fact that your holiday will be unpredictable weather-wise, so you pack everything from shorts and swimsuits to winter coats and snuggly socks.

4. You find you have packed more than you ever would have because you may as well fill the car.

5. You have raided the middle aisles of both Lidl and Aldi for outdoor supplies and have made more than one excessive purchase.

6.  You have sat in awe at the stunning Irish landscape, in a state of disbelief that this magical place exists right on your doorstep.

7. You have stood eating sandwiches in the rain and enjoyed it.

8. There is sand in your hair and clothes right now.

9. You have squealed while dipping your toes into the almost-frozen water, only to attempt to convince someone else that the water is ‘lovely’ five minutes later.

10. You have pockets full of shells.

11. You have a tan or burn line in the shape of your sandal straps.

12. Your freckles have ‘come out’ more than once in the last few days.

13. You say ‘look at the horse’ every time you pass a horse in a field.

14. You are fully converted to the whole day-drinking-on-the-beach thing.

15. You started the week wearing makeup and now you don’t even bother brushing your hair after a swim.

16. Your skin tastes like salt.

17. You still can’t believe how stereotypically green the Irish landscape is.

18. You keep seeing those hairy caterpillars everywhere.

19. Your car is full of sand and muck from beach-side afternoons and morning hikes.

20. You are officially obsessed with lighting campfires.

21. You have given up complaining about how quickly the weather can go from roasting to Baltic.

22. You’ve noted that baby seagulls are so much better than adult ones.

23. You’ve threatened to permanently move to wherever you’re staying a number of times.

24. You can’t remember how to cook on anything other than a barbecue.

25. You have stood over coastal cliffs feeling terrified and impressed all at the same time.

26. You’ve beckoned everyone to come and see a seal bobbing its shiny head above the waves.

27. You honestly forgot to take photos for social media because you are living in the moment.

28. You have wrestled to dress yourself underneath a towel.

29. You have written your name or someone else’s name in the sand with a stick.

30. You have seen stars like you have never seen before.

31. You have never eaten more crisps and ice-cream in your whole life.

32. You have heard someone randomly play guitar or tin whistle in the last week.

33. You have been called on to inspect a jellyfish on the beach at least once.

34.  You spoke Irish when you saw a sign indicating a Gaeltacht area.

35. You are unbelievably proud to call this gorgeous island your home.

Heather Rae El Moussa has been spilling the tea on her co-stars!

The Selling Sunset favourite recently burst back onto our screens when the sixth season of the Netflix hit dropped last month.

Now, the 35-year-old has finally opened up about where she stands with her co-stars.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Heather – who gave birth to son Tristan in January – shared that she has been trying to mend tensions with Chelsea Lazkani.

“I’ve always liked Chelsea. Even after I had Tristan, her and I had multiple conversations about motherhood and she gave me some tips and products,” Heather explained.

“But, obviously, having a newborn, it’s really hard to see anyone and see any of my girlfriends. If they’re not constantly reaching out to me, I just forget,” she added.

The realtor noted that she has been surprised by her issues with Chelsea, as she sided with newcomer Bre Tiesi during arguments. “There’s a way to handle situations and she handled a couple of them publicly, which I don’t agree with,” she admitted.

“I messaged her off camera saying, ‘There’s certain things that are out of my control with filming. There are certain scenes that make it, there’s certain things that don’t.’ We filmed a lot,” Heather detailed.

Heather confessed that things are still unclear between herself and Chelsea, saying: “I don’t know where I stand.”

“I have an open heart and I’m open to mending anything. But I never got a return message from her. So it is what it is. I’m a new mommy and I have a lot of important things in my life. I said my peace and I’ve moved on,” she insisted.

In her interview, Heather also reiterated her support for Bre, who welcomed a baby son with Nick Cannon in July of last year.

“I’m going to have her back. And she’s happy. She has a beautiful baby and she’s an incredible mom,” Heather stated, adding: “I’ll be supportive of her and whatever makes her happy.”

“I’m with Shaq a lot. Right now, he just left me yesterday and I’m seeing him again in three days,” Tanya detailed.

“London from Liverpool is only two hours. It’s so weird because I thought it was going to be really hard at some point but it’s not,” the 23-year-old admitted.

“I think it’s because I want to see him and he wants to see me. The things we go to we go together. It’s really not been hard,” she added.

Tanya also confirmed that she has a location in mind for where the couple might end up living together. “But I’ve been convincing him to move to Manchester because I love Manchester. It’s a mini London and if he moves there I might move in with him soon,” she teased.

Boyfriend Shaq then went on to express his thoughts on the matter. “Me and Tanya literally see each other every single week. We went on holiday last week to Malta, and then I came back and went straight to Liverpool for two days. My family haven’t seen me for about a week,” he explained.

To Tanya’s delight, the 25-year-old shared his approval of her plans. “I might be moving to Manchester soon. She’s been trying to convince me since we’ve come out so that might be on the cards. I’m a firm believer in you make time for the people you want to make time for,” he gushed.

“And obviously I love spending time with Tanya, so I spend more time up in Liverpool than in London these days,” Shaq added.

Katie B. McGrath has shared her inspiring story from discovering she had a brain tumour to fulfilling her dream of being a mum.

Katie’s memoir, Heads or Tales: Surviving a Brain Tumour, tells the emotional story about how her life changed forever after discovering a tumour was growing in her brain at the age of just 36.

By sharing her story, she hopes to help other people and their families that are in a similar situation, and to reassure others with a complex medical history that they can still become parents.

From detailing when she found out she had a brain tumour to sharing her difficult road to recovery and reflecting on when she found out she was pregnant in 2021 after years of trying, this memoir will truly move you.

The shocking discovery of the tumour, called Craniopharyngioma, was made in 2015 after Katie was told it had been growing in her brain since birth, and after months of brain surgeries, radiotherapy and physiotherapy, she has been healing every day since.

Katie & Jack in November 2022

Katie admits, "My recovery was slow and gruelling and I was traumatised", but with counselling and a strong support network, Katie’s life became more normalised.

Katie was unfortunately told she would not be able to conceive naturally, so began several rounds of fertility treatment in 2018 before she welcomed the birth of her baby boy in June 2022. Even though she describes her journey to becoming a mum as “complex”, Katie reveals it was, “completely worth it”.

“The failed cycles were very disappointing and disheartening but I persevered with the support of my husband Donal, family and friends”.

After doing everything in her power to assist her ability to become pregnant by improving her health and fitness, Katie’s dream came true and she found out she was expecting in 2021.

“It is a miracle that I was able to conceive even with the help of fabulous fertility treatment. A wonderful aspect of my pregnancy journey was that both Donal and I had a very strong feeling that I was having a boy even though we did not have the gender revealed to us. It was a feeling we both couldn’t shift”.

Interestingly enough, Katie’s brain tumour played a role in her infertility. “A remarkable feature of my infertility is that it was actually a repercussion of my brain injury and not a genetic factor. I had always assumed it was a genetic issue so I was flabbergasted when I was informed it was due to my brain injury!”.

Christmas Family Photo

Katie’s road to welcoming her son into the world was not the easiest as she had to be admitted to hospital three weeks early due to restricted blood flow in the area. Her baby’s growth had also slowed down and he was in the breech position.

A planned C-section was the best option for Katie as a vaginal labour would’ve been too risky due to too much pressure being put on her brain. After baby Jack’s arrival into the world, an ECG and CT scan for Katie which both thankfully came back clear, Mum and baby could be reunited at last and return home after Jack spent a few nights in the neonatal unit.

As if Katie’s start to motherhood wasn’t already hard enough, she became ill with Covid after being discharged from hospital, with her cough making her C-section stitches very painful.

“It was a tough and challenging time especially for a first time mum with limited experience. I was extra emotional too due to the fact that I was sleep deprived for the first few months”.

After recovering from Covid, Katie is now enjoying motherhood, revealing that herself and her husband Donal “feel extremely blessed and fortunate”, because “Jack is a miracle”.

Opening up about the anxieties that surround motherhood, Katie explained, “It was an eye opener to speak to family and friends about my first time mother's anxieties and to hear many of them say they had the same insecurities and fears”.

“We need to break down the barriers and allow mothers to know that it’s completely normal to feel anxious and insecure”.

Looking back on her route to becoming a mum, Katie said, “Our plans were abruptly halted when I became sick in 2015 so we are beyond appreciative that we were finally granted our wish with this beautiful miracle. It has been a wonderful whirlwind and I am so excited about the future. Jack has made my life more meaningful and brighter”.

Other aspects of Katie’s memoir include her day-to-day struggles from her inability to drive, neuro fatigue, steroid dependency and oestrogen deficiency.

After searching high and low, it turns out one of our favourite romantic comedies is on the telly tonight!

From the makers of Notting Hill and Bridget Jones's Diary, you already know this classic rom-com is not to be missed!

About a Boy follows the story of Will Freeman (Grant), a womaniser who lives a carefree lifestyle with zero responsibilities, whilst living off the royalties from his dad’s hugely-successful Christmas song.

Jennifer Coolidge has opened up about why she hasn’t started a family of her own.

The White Lotus star has spoken out about her decision not to have children and revealed she sees herself as ‘more of a stepmother’.

Speaking to British GQ, the 61-year-old explained that her immaturity is one of the leading reasons why she hasn’t had children.

Chatting about how spending time in Los Angeles is ‘boring’ as it’s more like a place in a movie where people settle down to have a family, Jennifer admits,”I think I’d appreciate it more if I had kids or something”.

Coolidge explained that her friends have ‘encouraged her to adopt’, but she thinks she ‘might just make a better stepmother’.

The Legally Blonde actress went on to say, “I’m very, very immature. I think that has kept me from having children, because I’m sort of a child. Maybe if I had kids, I would’ve had to have grown up”.

Jennifer also reveals that dating ‘intense men’ has had an impact on her starting a family.

“I’ve never had, like, a laid-back boyfriend that was just full of joy, you know?”, she explains, “Like, someone who laughs at all your shortcomings. That’s never who I choose for myself”.

Jennifer confirmed she is single at the moment, but sees new work opportunities as a way to potentially find a partner, or just a great group of pals.

“I’m single. My way of talking myself into a different job is like, well, it could be romance, or it could be, you know, a whole different group of friends. Cool things could come out of it”.

A man has been arrested as the search for a missing 21-year-old woman continues.

Chloe Mitchell was last seen almost one week ago, in the early hours of Saturday, June 3, in Ballymena town centre in Co. Antrim.

Following her disappearance, a 26-year-old was arrested in Lurgan in Co. Armagh yesterday afternoon.

The PSNI and forensic investigators also carried out a thorough search of a property in James Street in Lurgan yesterday evening.

Lengthy searches are continuing in an effort to find Chloe. Volunteer members of the Community Rescue Service have been aiding the police in searching the Ballymena area.

Volunteers have scoured buildings as well as more remote areas, such as nearby woodlands and a stretch of land around the River Braid.

Search efforts carried on well after dark yesterday evening, and resumed again this morning, in the hopes of finding Chloe.

Since the young woman’s disappearance, PSNI Chief Inspector Arnie O’Neill has been keeping the public up to date with their latest information. “We are now aware that Chloe was last seen in the late hours of Friday June 2nd into the early hours of Saturday 3rd in Ballymena town centre.”

"She was seen on CCTV walking in the direction of James Street,” he noted, adding that “Chloe was wearing a green and black North Face style jacket, a white t-shirt, leggings and Nike trainers."

Chloe’s loved ones are continuing to make numerous appeals to the public on social media. They ask that anyone who has any information on Chloe’s whereabouts should get in contact with either the police or a member of her family.

Anne Diamond has shared the unfortunate news that she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Anne is known for her broadcasting over the years on shows such as GB News, Good Morning with Anne and Nick and Good Morning Britain. She also previously appeared on Loose Women and Celebrity Big Brother

Now, while being interviewed by Dan Wootton for GB News after not appearing on the show for over five months, Anne explained her absence and discussed her heartbreaking diagnosis.

“It’s been a hell of a journey…I haven’t been on a world cruise, which is what I know social media has been saying… It hasn’t been a world cruise, it has been a fight against breast cancer”.

Credit: GB News Twitter

“It’s been a long journey. Five months later, I'm still not at the end of the journey, but I'm through it enough to come back to work”.

The 68-year-old went on to reveal she discovered she had breast cancer on the same day she found out she was being awarded an OBE.

Describing being told she was getting the OBE honour, Anne said, "That was a wonderful moment and it was like 9.30 in the morning. But I knew then because I'd already seen my GP, that I had to go to a breast cancer screening later in the morning. I thought I would just go for a mammogram, and a couple of tests and I'd be free in an hour."

After spending hours at her local hospital, Anne reflected on the moment a woman wearing a MacMillan Cancer Care lanyard came up to talk to her and she “knew it was serious”.

Credit: Anne Diamond Facebook

“I had the full works, the full mastectomy. God, this is the first time I've talked about it, so it's quite difficult but I've had the full works”.

The TV presenter continued, “The first operation I had was nine hours long. I don't remember it. I was in and out like that, but nine hours of removal and rebuild, that took a lot of getting over”.

“Then I had a lymphadenectomy, where they took out lymph nodes later as well, just to make sure they can trace the travel, if the cancer has travelled at all”.

Detailing her return to the news programme, Anne added, “I’m really pleased to be back. It’s great to be back”.

Diamond went on to encourage people to look for signs of cancer and to educate themselves on the symptoms.

Laura Anderson has hit back at claims that she has been making ‘swipes’ against her ex.

The former Love Island contestant is currently expecting her first child. Laura fell pregnant with a baby girl with her former boyfriend Gary Lucy, before the pair called time on their relationship.

In recent months, Laura has been vocal about her plans to co-parent with Gary, as well as the struggles she has had in recent months.

Now, the 34-year-old has been criticising speculation that she has been taking a ‘swipe’ at her baby’s father.

Credit: Laura Anderson Instagram

Taking to her Instagram stories last night, Laura re-shared two headlines from publications that alleged that she had taken a ‘cryptic swipe’ at Gary on social media.

Laura then went on to accuse the headlines of being “always negative towards women.”

“So over it, you can’t have a voice these days about anything it must be a swipe at your poor ex,” she penned alongside the screenshots, before adding: “Change is needed!”

Credit: Laura Anderson Instagram

In a later post, the mum-to-be went on to express her frustration over speculation about her pregnancy.

“Honestly so fed up of the UK media villainizing women. I’m pregnant! And, still going through a very stressful and public break up while trying to keep my dignity and mouth firmly shut,” Laura wrote dishearteningly.

The reality star concluded her thoughts by insisting that the post in question had nothing to do with Gary.

Credit: Laura Anderson Instagram

“Give me a break instead of creating opportunities for vulnerable women to be trolled. If I wanted to take a swipe at my ex I would have by now and it wouldn’t be through life quotes on Instagram. Stop,” she pleaded.

Laura and Gary first met on Celebs Go Dating last year, and revealed in late December that they were still dating after the series.

Laura then announced the pair’s pregnancy on February 15. Sadly, Gary confirmed later that evening that they had since decided to end their relationship, but that they would co-parent their daughter once she is born.

Faye Winter has shared an update after finding a lump in her breast.

The former Love Island star revealed earlier in the week that she had been quieter than usual on social media after finding a lump while on holiday.

After telling her fans she was going for a mammogram and ultrasound, Faye now has an update on her health after finding out the results of her breast check.

Credit: Faye Winter Instagram

Sharing a snap of herself in a hospital gown to her 1.2M Instagram followers, the 27-year-old penned, “Little update, today went well!!!!! Happy tears all round! Again thank you for all your messages and remember to check your bobbies, I will jump on later to update you all in full”.

Speaking on her Stories later, Faye explained, “I didn’t sleep at all last night so I was stressing as usual”.

“So, I just thought I’d let you know what it is, where it is. I have a lump here. I can literally feel it now”, she added as she felt near her armpit.

Credit: Faye Winter Instagram

“Basically, it is an inflamed lymph gland, which is about three millimetres big, which doesn’t even sound that big, but I swear it’s like big”.

Winter continued, “They would only start worrying about it if it was 10 millimetres big so you don’t need to worry about it. It’s all great but the amount of you that messaged me yesterday or the day before and you are going to the doctors”.

“That is all I could ever have wished for because I’ll be brutally honest, I never ever ever before, checked [my breasts]. I didn’t do it”.

Credit: Faye Winter Instagram

“It’s just one of those things and it wasn’t until I put suncream on and I was like, ‘Girls, can you feel my boob please?’, and then it just played on my mind all month”.

Faye added, “I knew it was going to be nothing but it just really played on my mind and I was just in my own little bubble just doing what I wanted to do until I got some answers”.

The former reality TV star highlighted the important message to her fans to check their breasts for any abnormalities and to go to see their doctor if they are worried about anything.
