No one really likes trying on intimate items in a shop – God knows who’s been trying it on before you – but we take some comfort in the little protective strip that is meant to protect us from germs.

Not anymore.

Philip Tierno, a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University’s School of Medicine has conducted research on the matter, and he found out that swimsuits, underwear and other intimate items were covered in skin, fecal and respiratory tract bacteria, and worst of all? Vaginal organisms like yeast.

He also found that the classiness of the shop doesn’t matter, it’s the skimpiness of the knickers that really makes the difference. Apparently, the skimpier the underwear, the more likely women are to take off their own knickers to try it on.

However, Tierno says: “The good thing is that most people have a very robust immune system, so they can usually fight off the small number of organisms they may get on their body. The fact that you come into contact with one doesn’t mean you’re going to get sick.”

If you want to make sure you DEFINITELY don’t get sick from going on the hunt for the perfect bikini, Tierno says there are some things you can do:

  • Keep your knickers on! And wash it when you get home.
  • Wash your swim suit or underwear after you’ve bought it – even if the protective strip is still on it.
  • Wash your hands after trying on the intimates.

Cheryl Cole has been dating Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini for only three months now, so it came as a big surprise when she posted this to her Instagram account last night:

Apparently the pair were wed at a secret beach ceremony on the island of Mustique, in the West Indies in front of only four guests.

We have to say we’re delighted for Cheryl – though is it just us, or do you agree that she could have taken a better photo of the ring? The legs spread, fist out pose isn’t the most flattering, even for Ms. Cole. Or should we say Mrs. Fernandez-Versini?!

Congratulations Cheryl!

This puppy is far too cute, but is it all an act?

Victoria's secret model Lindsay Ellingson married longtime love Sean Clayton at an intimate ceremony in Bluffton, South Carolina on Saturday evening – and it sounds like it was perfect.

The couple said: "Words can't express the joy and happiness we have as we start the next chapter of our lives together with the support and love of our families and friends."

Awh! And you'll never guess what song they chose for their first dance – Hold On, We're Going Home by Drake!

Clayton is lucky he got a second chance with this beautiful blonde as when she first gave him her number at a party for Jay Z, he didn't call her. It wasn't until they bumped into each other at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City that they decided to go on a date. Talk about a close call!

Research conducted by Avast has found that the factory reset button on your phone doesn't actually delete everything from it.

The study took 20 secondhand phones bought on eBay and recovered over 40,000 photos – and they weren't all family friendly. One phone contained "more than 250 selfies of what appear to be the previous owner’s manhood".

A Google spokesperson has said that the researchers must have been using older Android versions as their findings did not “reflect the security protections in Android versions that are used by 85% of users.”

This means if your Android is running version 4.0 or later, then you should be safe enough, though Google recommend enabling encryption on their smartphones (go to Settings and then Security).

iPhone users have encryption built in, so they can snap away to their hearts content – just be careful what you do with those photos afterwards!

Robbie Williams revealed back in April that he and his wife Ayda Field were expecting their second baby – and today we found out that Robbie's two-year-old Theodora Rose is going to have a baby brother.

The singer and his wife asked the doctor to write their baby's sex on a piece of paper, so they could open it later, and according to a friend of the couple "they went out for dinner and opened it after dessert.”

Robbie is sure to be delighted with the news, as he admitted back in April: "If we have a girl, it’ll be totally cool but I would quite like a little boy.

“Last time I said that as long as it was healthy, I didn’t mind. Then we found out we were having a girl and it was a really strange emotion. I was like, ‘What am I going to do with a girl?”

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Johnny Depp was spotted out looking like a totally different person – but it's ok, it's just make-up. The actor is playing a crime boss in a new crime drama Black Mass.

The drama is based on the 2001 book Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob, which was written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill.

The hair, those teeth… what have they done to him?! The make-up department definitely deserve an award for this transformation – we didn't think it was possible to make Johnny Depp look bad!

Fans have been speculating that 65-year-old Game of Thrones author George R R Martin will be dead before he finishes writing the series. They've also been complaining that he's letting other things get in the way of his writing, but Martin put them straight in a recent interview with a Swiss newspaper:

"I find that question pretty offensive, frankly, when people start speculating about my death and my health, so f*** you to those people.

"I'm 65 years old now; I've been writing professionally since 1971. I know my working methods. I don't work when I travel, I don't work in hotels, I don't work on airplanes, I don't work on trains. I work at home, when I have a nice, big uninterrupted block of time in which I can really lose myself in my work."

Well, you can't rush a masterpiece now can you? Martin spoke out back in 2009 aswell about his slow progress:

"Some of you are angry that I watch football during the fall … some of you hate my other projects … some of you don't want me attending conventions, teaching workshops, touring and doing promo, or visiting places like Spain and Portugal (last year) or Finland (this year). More wasting time, when I should be home working on A Dance with Dragons…After all, as some of you like to point out in your emails, I am 60 years old and fat, and you don't want me to 'pull a Robert Jordan' on you and deny you your book."

Hey, the man has a point. He doesn't owe anyone a book – and if we were as successful as him, we'd definitely be using our fortunes to finance a few trips abroad!

Nicole Scherzinger was less than impressed when she heard about the 18-year-old girl in Magaluf who performed sex acts on 24 guys as part of a competition.

The singer had this advice for the girl: "Child, you better get on your knees and pray – after you disinfect your mouth.

"I think it's degrading, it's sad, it's disgusting and it's why guys be talking about 'b*****s and h*s' and all these things. I cannot stand any of that."

Yikes! We thought the X Factor judge may have had some sympathy for the girl, but apparently not!

We love Channing Tatum, and even more so because of how much he adores his wife and daughter.

The actor posted a cute family selfie yesterday in recognition of his fifth wedding anniversary. He captioned it: "Another year of love and light..couldn't ask for anything more. Thanks everyone for the anniversary wishes!"

Channing and his wife Jenna Dewan cuddled up with one-year-old Everly for the snap, and while you can't see the little girl's face, her tiny hand reaching for her daddy is the cutest thing.

If only there was more than one Channing to go around!

We thought Cheryl Cole likes us, we really did. Well, it turns out she just likes our low tax rates.

It has been revealed that the X-Factor judge has shut down Tara Entertainments Ltd – which was owned by CC Entertainments (of which Cheryl is the controlling party). This Irish company would have been a  way for the singer to pay a lower rate of company tax on her international earnings than she would have owed in Britain. A couple of days ago Gary Barlow and two other members of Take That found out that they owed millions in unpaid tax after it was ruled that an investment vehicle they had been using was a tax avoidance scheme, so perhaps Cheryl decided to quit while she was ahead (even though what she was doing was totally legal).

Standard corporation tax in Britain is 21%, whereas in Ireland it's 12.5% – which means Cheryl saved herself over £200,000, and she's not the first celeb to do so.

Olly Murs paid €61,735 on earning of €516,816 through his Irish company in 2012 – considerably lower than what he would have paid in Britain.

While we're sure the money has come in handy for us as a nation, the least she could do would be to visit more often to show her appreciation. We'd put her up in our house no problem!
