What a week it has been for us poor Irish!

First, there was Monday and Tuesday's treacherous snow and ice, and then Storm Rachel took over, blasting us all with wind and rain.

Just as we thought things were beginning to calm down, it seems we're in for more freezing weather today – in fact, it has already begun in some parts of Ireland.

Met Éireann have this morning issued a Status Yellow snow and ice alert between 6am and noon, so be careful out there.

Parts of Ireland already affected by snow on the roads this morning include Longford, Roscommon, Monaghan, Leitrim, Westmeath, Cavan and Louth, with frost widespread on the roads elsewhere across the country.

Met Éireann say commuters should be aware of "outbreaks of sleet and snow in places this morning, especially in parts of the midlands, north and east."

The latest warning comes after a day of wild weather yesterday which caused power outages, diverted flights and fallen trees around the country.

Don't cancel your plans for the weekend just yet, though – the weather is expected to calm down later today and for Saturday and Sunday too. Phew!

Met Éireann have issued a red alert for exposed and mountain areas of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry where winds are expected to reach between 130-150km/h tonight.

The red alert will come into place tonight at 9pm and is in place until midday tomorrow. However, alerts have also been issued for other areas of the country with an orange alert being issued for the rest of Ireland and a yellow rainfall alert in place for Connaught, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The National Emergency Committee have advised people on the west coast to stay indoors and avoid travel if possible and to stay clear of waterways and cliff walks.

With things expected to be particularly bad in Kerry, schools are set to remain closed with The Department of Education advising similar areas on red alert to do the same.

Storm Rachel is well on her way following the snowy night seen in much of the country so stay indoors and be careful when out and about!

#StormRachel has already begun to trend on Twitter with many people tweeting about the bad weather – and there's only more to come!

Stay safe everyone!
