William Roache is facing backlash from the fans and family of actress Anne Kirkbride today, after revealing his version of events about the months leading up to her death.

Anne and William appeared alongside each other as Coronation Street couple Deirdre and Ken Barlow for 35 years, and at the time of Anne's death from cancer last year, William paid tribute to his friend, saying her death had hit him "so personally."

Now though, the actor has spoken out about the circumstances surrounding her unexpected death – which happened during a three-month hiatus from Coronation Street – and Anne's family are blasting him for overstepping the mark.

In quotes published by The Mirror and other media outlets today, William describes Anne as "an alcoholic" and "depressed" and said that her hiatus was a last resort from Coronation Street's producers, unrelated to her cancer diagnosis.

"What happened to Anne was… she was was an alcoholic," he is quoted as saying. "She was on drugs for depression. She had been an alcoholic but she was off the drink.

"She was on anti-depressant drugs all her life and then she just started crying a lot and I spent half my life sort of comforting her and getting her back on track.

William also said that Anne's distress was affecting the Coronation Street filming schedule, and that certain scenes had to be delayed because she was "weepy and wailing."

He claims that ITV gave Anne three months to "sort herself out" during which time she was diagnosed with cancer.

"They [doctors] found her right lung full of cancer and she had a brain tumour. They took her into hospital on the Friday and she died on the Monday. In a way it was a blessing."

Anne's husband David Kirkbride has confirmed that his late wife would have "described herself as an alcoholic," but adds that she "hadn't touched a drop in 30 years."

Meanwhile, fans over on Twitter have also hit back at Ken for oversharing about his late friend:

There has been no response from William's rep as yet.

The creator of the much-loved soap Coronation Street has sadly passed away.

ITV revealed that the former writer of the soap died peacefully over night and was surrounded by his friends and family.

Everyone who worked with Tony through the years, including past and present actors were heartbroken on hearing the news this morning.

Tony imagined the Manchester-based soap at the age of 24 and remained a consultant on the show until the day he died.

John Whiston, Creative Director, Soaps for ITV Studios paid a moving tribute to Tony: “Amid the many and much deserved tributes to Tony Warren, surely there can be no greater tribute than that the show he created 56 years ago is still the number one show on British TV.

"Tony infused Coronation Street with his own spirit, one that was at the same time dramatic and credible, exciting and grounded, funny and humane. It is Tony's spirit that has kept the show fresh and relevant all these years and will do for years to come.

"All who are lucky enough to work on the show owe Tony a huge amount of gratitude. As do all the millions who tune into Coronation Street week after week.”

We loved to hate him on Mr Selfridge, and now Leon Ockenden is set to play quite a different role.

Coronation Street has cast the bad boy to play Michelle Connor's ex-boyfriend in the soap.

The actor, who is best known for his role as Harry's son-in-law in Mr Selfridge will be playing the part of groom-to-be Will.

His first scenes will see him book an appointment with wedding planner Michelle, played by Kym Marsh, and even though the former lovers haven't seen each other in years, sparks start to fly.

We're looking forward to seeing if Will will destroy Michelle's relationship with Steve McDonald (probably) or if he'll turn out to be the good guy (probably not).

Sometimes we feel like the TV soaps are #real and it's a big no-no for any soap to cross paths, and especially not switch actors.

But, since former Coronation Street actor, Jonathan Wrather, was only in the soap for a year back in 2002, we'll let it slide.

Jonathan is said to be "thrilled" to join the Emmerdale cast, as he's taking on a different role than that of his Corrie character.

He played Joe Carter in Coronation Street, the ultimate bad boy, who stole Steve McDonald's ex-wife's heart. Joe and Karen had a steamy affair on the soap until he left in 2003.

He's also made appearances in Doctors, Holby City and Casualty over the years, but we're looking forward to him becoming a regular on our screens again.

While Michelle Keegan looks very comfortable being the ultimate beach babe on Instagram, she has other professional ventures to get back to it would seem.

The former Coronation Street star announced earlier this year that she had big plans for her acting career. In her latest Hello! magazine blog, the 28-year old actress also mentioned a series of “very important” work meetings coming up

Now, according to OK! Magazine she is going to be appearing in the next series of Plebs.

The ITV2 comedy series is set in Roman times and Michelle is set to play a “vestal virgin” named Ursula.

She is set to appear in only one episode, which she has already filmed in Bulgaria.

A source from the production told The Sun: “Everyone on set absolutely loved her. She was brilliant.”

Her storyline will feature the characters Marcus, Stylax and Grumio, played by Tom Rosenthal, Joel Fry and Ryan Sampson.

Since she left Coronation Street and the role of Tina McIntyre last year, Michelle has made a number of TV appearances.

She appeared in the critically acclaimed Ordinary Lies alongside Max Beesley, Sally Lindsay and Mackenzie Crook.

She has also filmed the lead role in Our Girl, the BBC army drama.

Michelle has previously said it was daunting to move on from the popular ITV soap, especially under the watchful eyes of the media.

"I felt there was so much pressure after leaving Corrie. I knew I had to make the right decision about my first role.

Everyone was waiting to see what I did and getting ready to judge me if I made a mistake," she told the Daily Star.

Well, with plenty of new roles on the go it looks like Michelle is doing just fine so far!

Ryan Thomas is saying goodbye to Weatherfield after 15 years, it was confirmed this morning.

The 31-year-old actor, who plays builder Jason Grimshaw in the long-running soap, said he'd be filming his final scenes in early 2016.

Having joined the show as a teen back in 2000, Ryan said in a statement today that he was ready to pursue other challenges.

""The decision to leave was an extremely difficult one but I felt that now was the right time to spread my wings and try other roles."

While his departure from the show has been confirmed, Ryan's character has a meaty storyline ahead before he says goodbye.

"In the coming months he'll be at the heart of a massive story, affecting not just his family but the Websters and the Windasses too which will take us well into 2016," producer Stuart Blackburn said today.

As for Jason, he admitted he's "excited" to see what exit storyline the writers create for him.

After hinting at the Pride of Britain Awards last week that a move to the US could be on the cards, it seems Ryan could be leaving the UK in favour of better acting opportunities.

"Going to Hollywood is a dream so I’m going to see what happens," he told reporters at the awards.

Helen Flanagan welcomed her first child three months ago, and it looks like she's been working hard to shed her baby weight.

The Coronation Street actress was pictured on the beach in Mallorca recently, doting over baby Matilda and looking absolutely amazing in the process.

Helen looked every bit the beach babe in a white Melissa Odabash bikini with gold detailing on the straps, accessorised with pearl earrings, aviator sunnies and a gold watch.

The 25-year-old headed to the Spanish island for some rest and relaxation with her mum earlier this month – her first holiday since giving birth.

Helen kept quiet about her trip on social media, posting only this picture of a typically Spanish cathedral with the caption, "Beautiful time with my mum and Matilda this week."

Even before becoming pregnant with her boyfriend Scott Sinclair, Helen had made no secret of her desire to become a mum.

"I want to get pregnant this summer," she said in an interview in January 2014.

"I’m obsessed with kids. I’m probably the broodiest woman in Britain.

"Scott knows I want loads of kids and he’s totally up for it. I talk about it all the time."

Last month the Mancunian star opened up about her difficult experience during labour, a three-day ordeal which left her screaming in pain at times.

But when she finally met her new arrival, Helen said her outlook totally changed.

"I couldn’t keep my eyes off her," she told OK! magazine.

"It made the pain I was in all worth it – she’s a dream come true."

We were given a serious blast from X Factor past earlier today.

Yes, SHEmazing! met up with none-other than the still-gorgeous winner of the second series, Shayne Ward.

After recently signing a year-long contract with Ireland’s favourite soap, Coronation Street, the singer-turned-actor was on-hand in Dublin to help launch the new season schedule for UTV Ireland.

But fans of the That’s My Goal singer’s tunes need not fret: the 30-year-old isn’t leaving behind his first love just yet.

“No way am I saying goodbye to the music stuff, not at all,” he told SHEmazing!

Turning 31 in three weeks’ time, he added: “I have a new single – Moving Target – landing on my birthday and I'm still doing gigs at the weekend.”

Shayne, who happily sipped on a Guinness while conducting interviews, had earlier found himself surrounded by Dublin’s very own version of Corrie’s Rovers Return – ordinarily The Bath on Bath Ave.

He was also joined by the soap’s Richard Hawley and Faye Brookes.

Last night, the show’s fans had been treated to a special hour-long live episode – and UTV Ireland said today that some 600,000 people had tuned in.

“It was a lot of pressure but it was great,” Mr Ward, who plays Aidan Connor, said of the Coronation Street special. “The whole cast celebrated afterwards."

And, understandably, he embraced the live element enthusiastically.

"I also did a show on the West End so yes, it came naturally,” he added. “But so much pressure too – everything really is make or break.”

And while today represented very much a flying visit for Shayne, he said that he ultimately wants to settle down in Ireland.

He told Goss.ie that Dublin is a “home from home,” and that he holds an Irish passport.

“I love it,” he added. “My whole family were born and bred here, I’ve always wanted to move here since I was kid, my mum was going to bring us over here when I was 10.

UTV Ireland shows for the forthcoming season include the likes of the six-part Daniel And Majella’s B&B Road Trip, which hits screens in mid-October.

Lorraine Keane will also be back with the celeb-focused The Interview, and Jenny Buckley will continue to present entertainment bulletin, The Pulse.

Otherwise stables such as I’m A Celebrity, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and Graham Norton all feature.

Only a few months ago Sarah Harding had some very high hope for her future career as a soap star. The former Girls Aloud singer has appeared on Coronation Street as Joni Preston, somewhat of a trouble maker, apparently.

However, it seems that the 33-year old pop star has failed to make an impression on the soap’s loyal fan base. Many viewers have taken to Twitter to voice their rather scathing reviews of Sarah’s acting skills.

A source for The Sun has said that “it’s safe to say Sarah’s Corrie career hasn’t gone as planned. Fans and critics have been pretty unimpressed with her acting”.  The paper reports that she will not be making any further appearances on the show for the time being.

Her stint on the show is to be cut short as “it doesn’t reflect well on Corrie” according to the insider.

They went on to say that Coronation Street has been accused in the past of hiring famous faces for guest appearances in efforts to boost their ratings. Sarah’s appearance is “a failed experiment”.

Sarah herself came forward to say her experience on the soap was a “learning curve”, after fans slammed her performance.

However, a spokesperson for the show has pointed out that Sarah’s role was billed as a cameo appearance from the beginning.

“Sarah was cast for four episodes in a cameo role for a specific storyline. There are no immediate plans for the character of Joni to return.”

In the past Sarah did mention her nerves about joining the cast. She told ITV’s Lorraine “They are icons and they're pros as well and I came in thinking, 'Oh my goodness, I'm so going to fluff my lines, I'm such an amateur!”

Coronation Street star, Jack P Shepherd, has caused a stir by taking of a photo (pretending?) to relieve himself on the sign for rival soap, Emmerdale.

Jack, who plays David Platt on the show, posted the photo to his Twitter account after a night out but deleted it within seconds.

An insider told The Sun that “Jack had a few drinks like the rest of the Corrie cast, but as the night went on he got a bit boisterous.” Yeah, no kidding!

The source revealed that the 27-year-old soap star has been in trouble before over inappropriate behaviour and that ITV bosses have warned their actors against this kind of publicity.

“Jack knew this could get him in trouble. There’s big rivalry between the soaps but the ITV bosses don’t want any headaches over rows.”

While Jack did delete the picture, he clearly isn’t feeling too shook up about the thought of possibly getting in trouble as he tweeted, “Now where’s that @bbceastenders set,” after the incident.

The insider went on to say that “It is hoped that she’ll be back home in a day or so. It is very exciting for them, and both of their families.”

The former Corrie star and her Aston Villa beau have been in an on and off again relationship for five years.

Helen has said that she has always wanted to be a mum and that she would be ready for a baby before she would make the commitment of getting married.
