For some folk, the thought of hurling yourself down a water-slide at significant speed fills them with dread.

For others, a holidays or hot day wouldn't be complete without one.

However, both camps will be unnerved by a recent video, which shows some poor hapless young man shoot off a slide – and onto the rocky terrain below.

Ouch. Yes, suffice to say that it makes for hide-behind-your-hands viewing.

The accident happened at a home just east of Austin in Texas and was – thankfully for the internet – captured on a phone and later posted to Facebook along with the hashtags #failvideo #brokenarm #notdead.

The footage shows David Salmon shoot down the slide, subsequently taking a turn too fast. His body rides up the side, and – airborne – he can next be seen tumbling 3metres over the edge.

“I'd gone down a few times and it was fast,” he has now said. “But this time, I just couldn't slow down, even threw my arm out, and went right over the edge.”

He added: “For a split second, I was like oh no. And then it was like a hard crash, and the rest was all just blurry.”

Mr Salmon furthermore told Fox 4 News that said he was conscious throughout most of the incident. Even though he remains in a lot of pain now, he also knows it could’ve been so much worse.

Still, in the aftermath he's been left with a broken left arm, and several fractured ribs; he has significant scrapes and bruises on his lower back, shoulders and side.

“It was excruciating,” David unsurprisingly said of the incident.

He and his friends had rented the Texas house for a long weekend and were taking turns on the slide last Sunday evening when the accident occurred.

“I could have easily broken my neck or my back,” David concluded. “And this could have been way worse.”

An accident at the venue saw Ciara fall two-and-a-half metres from a three storey building. She was taken to Cork University Hospital but was subsequently airlifted to the Mater in Dublin in order to receive specialist care for spinal injuries.

The 18-year old had just sat her Leaving Cert at Kinsale Community School and her family and friends were “devastated and shocked” by what had happened.

She suffered several spinal injuries after the fall and is now in a wheelchair. Her aunt, Maria O'Mahony, has said that the facilities in Cork were not equipped to for dealing with Ciara’s needs. When she first arrived in CUH after receiving treatment in Dublin since the accident, she was unable to get from her bed in her shared room to the bathroom facilities.

Speaking to the Irish Sun, Maria said Ciara had been doing very well while recovering at the Mater but upon moving back to CUH things had gone to well.

“It’s like she’s been forced to start her recovery all over again,” she explained.

A spokesperson for CUH told the Independent that when Ciara arrived the hospital was “exceptionally busy with approximately 80 emergency admissions daily.”

She has since been given a private room and the wheelchair which she now requires and is said to be “over joyed” with these improvements in her care.

The Irish Sun spoke with Kinsale Cllr Kevin Murphy at the times who said: “You don’t expect such a dreadful thing to happen when a young girl is out socialising.”

The 'freak accident' occurred only one month after the club had been reopened following renovations. Business continued as usual after Ciara's fall with Declan Ryan of The Moorings telling the Sunday World

“It was just an accident. She fell about 8 foot [2.5metres] from the side of the building. It wasn’t in the club it was beside it.”

A Chinese cleaner from Shanghai has become the next victim of a terrible escalator accident which took place late yesterday evening.

In yet another escalator malfunction, the cleaner was seen mopping the moving escalator when one of the moving steps collapsed and trapped his foot underneath.

The mishap was caught on video and has now been watched by more than 95,000 YouTube users.

In the same clip, which some viewers may find distressing, the cleaner is seen panicking and shouting for help. Onlookers rush to his assistance, but sadly they were unable to rescue his foot from the broken step.

It is said that the emergency services took nearly 20 minutes to relieve him from the trap before he was rushed to hospital. Unfortunately doctors were not able to save his foot and the man will now have to get it amputated.

This news comes just a week after footage of a brave mother trying to save her child before she plunged to her death through a faulty metal plate emerged online. The 30-year-old had to throw her son to safety before she fell to her death.

It took four men to rescue her body from the fall. An inquest said that maintenance workers recently replaced the metal panel but did not secure it with screws.

An investigation into yesterday's accident is now taking place.

A number of young Irish citizens have been killed following a tragic accident in Berkeley, California.

Police are reporting that five people have died and another eight have been left injured following the collapse of a balcony on the fourth floor of an apartment building. Berkeley is one of many areas of California popular with Irish college students as a summer destination.

Local media are reporting that the victims are all aged between 20 and 25.

It's believed that the 21st birthday party of an Irish visitor was taking place in the apartment at the time of the accident, which occurred around 12.40am local time (8.40am Irish time).

The building in question has been named as Liberty Gardens, used as student accommodation for UC Berkeley students during term time. Apartments like this are often rented out to J1 students during the summer months. The fourth floor balcony is believed to have collapsed, with debris falling to the sidewalk.

Officer Jennifer Coats, a spokeswoman with the Berkeley Police Department, said that many of the injured have critical, life-threatening wounds.

Ms Coats said police were working with the fire department and city officials to confirm what exactly caused the collapse.

The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, today confirmed that Irish people were among those killed in the accident, and said his department were working closely with Ireland's Consul General in San Francisco to provide assistance to those affected and to families at home in Ireland.

Anyone with concerns about friends or family in the region, should call the Emergency Consular Response Team on +353 1 418 0200.
