In a heartbreaking new RTÉ One documentary which airs tonight at 9.35pm, the son of Sophie Toscan du Plantier reveals how her death impacted him and his family.

On December 23 1996, the body of Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found in a laneway outside her holiday home near Schull, West Cork.

Sophie's son, Pierre-Louis Toscan du Plantier, was just 14-years-old at the time and reveals how that day was his “last day of being a child,” adding, “She was everything for me.”

Sophie's murder was a tragic event that sent shock waves through the local community, and over 20 years later, her family are still searching for answers.

The Du Plantier Case documents the story of one of the most infamous murders in recent Irish history, looking at the case from both sides.

On one, a grieving family fighting for justice, and on the other, a man campaigning for his innocence.

In tonight's programme, viewers will hear unprecedented testimony form Sophie's mother, Marguerite Bouniol, and her brother Bertrand.

Although Ian Bailey was never convicted, he was publicly identified as a suspect in 1997 and has protested his innocence for the past 20 years.

Since then, he has brought his case to the High Court alleging a Garda conspiracy to frame him for murder.

Ian Bailey has now been indicted for murder by the French courts who want him to stand trial in Paris, however, this morning, the High Court refused to order his extradition to France, though it is still possible that he will be tried ‘in absentia’ in Paris.

As part of tonight's documentary, Ian Bailey was interviewed by reporter, Philip Boucher, along with his partner, Jules Thomas.

“It is in my mind and intention to write a letter to the DPP and I’m going to suggest that the DPP or the authorities in Ireland invite the French prosecutors to travel here to Ireland and to overview, under Irish law, my trial here. I would welcome it.”

The Du Plantier Case airs on RTÉ One tonight at 9.35pm.

Following the death of Linkin Park's, Chester Bennington, the band have paid an emotional tribute to the lead singer in their first official statement since the tragedy.

Chester was found dead at his home in Los Angeles last Thursday. It has since been confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner that the 41-year-old died by suicide.

In a letter simply titled 'Dear Chester', posted on Linkin Park's official website, the group said “Our hearts are broken,” adding that “the shockwaves of grief and denial are still sweeping through our family as we come to grips with what has happened”.

The statement continued: “You touched so many lives, maybe even more than you realised. In the past few days, we’ve seen an outpouring of love and support, both public and private, from around the world. Talinda and the family appreciate it, and want the world to know that you were the best husband, son, and father; the family will never be whole without you.”

The band released their latest album, One More Light, in May this year and were due to embark on a North American tour later this week.

The future of the band is not yet known, however, in the letter, the group noted that Chester's absence “leaves a void that can never be filled—a boisterous, funny, ambitious, creative, kind, generous voice in the room is missing.”

It continued, "We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place.”

“You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human. You had the biggest heart, and managed to wear it on your sleeve.”

“Our love for making and performing music is inextinguishable. While we don’t know what path our future may take, we know that each of our lives was made better by you. Thank you for that gift. We love you, and miss you so much.”

Chester is survived by his wife Talinda, their son Tyler and twin daughters Lilly and Lils as well as three children from his previous relationships.

So, if you had could choose one super power, what would it be?

Time travel? Invisibility? The ability to speak to animals?

The last one. Obviously.

Well, according to a new Amazon report, pet translators are not only possible, they could be on the market within ten years.

Futurologist William Higham of Next Big Thing, who co-authored the report for Amazon, said: “Innovative products that succeed are based around a genuine and major consumer needs.”

“The amount of money now spent on pets – they are becoming fur babies to so many people – means there is huge consumer demand for this. Somebody is going to put this together.”

He also referred to research being carried out by Con Slobodchikoff, professor emeritus at the department of biological sciences at Northern Arizona University, who found that prairie dogs had “a sophisticated communication system that has all the aspects of language”.

“They have words for different species of predator and can describe the colour of clothes of a human, or the coat of coyotes or dogs,” Slobodchikoff says.

The author of Chasing Doctor Dolittle: Learning the Language of Animals, now believes his research could apply to other animals and is currently raising money to develop a cat and dog translation device – and we're totally behind the idea.

Just think of all the fun you and your four-legged friends could have together!

With easy access to maps, planes, trains and boats, it's safe to say the world has been thoroughly explored by now.

However, much like people who believe the earth is flat, this Reddit user believes that Finland doesn't exist.

The user, named Raregan, baffled the Internet with his theory, as he believes Finland is just Eastern Europe and the 'imaginative' country was named after fish…

Oh, and he also claims that the UN has altered maps of the world as part of a worldwide conspiracy theory.

Raregan writes: "The idea that an entire country is made up seems so bizarre that nobody would ever believe it, making it easy to do."

He continued on to say that Japan is at the heart of the lies, since Finland's biggest company, Nokia, is Japanese.

And apparently, Russia and Sweden "go along with it."

Raregan continues: "Finland's main company, Nokia, is apparently owned by the Japanese and they're a main player in this.

"Now as for 'why' people would want to invent Finland as a country that's a bit more in depth and there's a few reasons as to why Sweden and Russia go along with it but it's mostly to do with Japanese fishing rights.

"You see the Japanese love their sushi but tight fishing regulations and public outcry mean they can't fish as much as they want.

"So after the Cold War they agreed with Russia to create a 'landmass' called Finland where they could fish.

"The fish is then transported through Russia where a small percentage of the food is given to the population, and then is shipped to Japan under the disguise of 'Nokia' products.

"Japan is apparently one of the worlds largest importers of Nokia products despite the fact that 'nobody there owns a Nokia phone' apparently.

"The crux of all this however, and my favourite part, is the homage that the Japanese gave to this entire conspiracy theory.

"What do fish have? Fins. Therefore they named their imaginary country Finland."

Err… Are you as confused as we are?

When news broke that Jodie Whittaker would become the first female Doctor on Doctor Who, most fans rejoiced, hailing the move as an important step for female role models.

However, not everyone was happy about the casting with some struggling to imagine a woman  in a role previously reserved for white, male actors.

Most notably, former Doctor, Peter Davison, who played the fifth Doctor in the early 1980s, has been speaking openly on his reservations about the casting decision.

According to The Guardian, while at Comic-Con this weekend, Peter said:

“If I feel any doubts, it’s the loss of a role model for boys, who I think Doctor Who is vitally important for. So I feel a bit sad about that, but I understand the argument that you need to open it up.”

“As a viewer, I kind of like the idea of the Doctor as a boy but then maybe I’m an old-fashioned dinosaur — who knows?”

He then went onto praise Jodie who is a “terrific actress” and likely to do a “wonderful job.”

However, his previous comments did not go unnoticed and another former Doctor, Colin Baker, was not too impressed.

“They’ve had 50 years of having a role model. So, sorry Peter, you’re talking rubbish there — absolute rubbish,” he said to The Guardian.

“You don’t have to be of a gender of someone to be a role model. Can’t you be a role model as people?”

Peter later took to Twitter to defend his comments saying that he "urged uncertain fans to be supportive about change."

According to emerging reports, Charlie Gard’s parents have announced that they will no longer pursue further treatment for their critically ill child.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates, whose tragic story has made headlines all over the world in recent months, reportedly made the decision in light of recent medical reports and scans.

The parents of 11-month-old Charlie, who suffers from a genetic disease, were appealing to be allowed to travel to the United States to seek treatment for their son, but have now conceded it would not be in the baby’s best interests.

Charlie inherited the faulty RRM2B gene which means he is unable to move or breathe without the aid of a ventilator.

It is understood that a high court judge was preparing to oversee the latest round of the legal battle when Charlie’s parents announced their intent.

Speaking on behalf of Chris and Connie, barrister Grant Armstrong said: “This case is now about time. Sadly time has run out.”

“The parents’ worst fears have been confirmed. It is now too late to treat Charlie,” he confirmed.

Charlie’s parents have requested an end to protests relating to their case and appealed for time to simply be with their baby son.

Ever wonder what flavour your favourite song is? Yep, neither have we – and that's why we're a tad confused by this new machine.

Japanese company NOMLAB has invented a juicer, aptly named Squeeze Music, that turns your favourite song into a drink.

The machine analyses the emotional content of the tune, and then transforms it into liquid.

Each feeling has a specific genre:

  • Happy = Sweet

  • Excited = Sour

  • Romantic = Astringent

  • Sentimental = Salty

  • Sad = Bitter

And while music genres produce many more feelings that those five, NOMLAB is looking into incorporating five more feelings into the machines very soon.

According to Indy100, the developers of Squeeze Music said: "At a music festival for example, you can enjoy the experience to have a drink blended according to a song while listening to it at a gig.

"Moreover, we can mix alcohol so it could be served as cocktails in a bar if people want to try that out."

The introduction of alcohol has made it much more appealing to us… but is this just total millennial notions?

Contemporary narrative often plays to the notion that women tend to hit their sexual peak in their later years, but recent research may have just turned that notion on its head.

A survey, conducted by Lovehoney, harnessed the opinion of more than 14,000 people, and established that 48 per cent of females said their libido was highest between 18-24 compared to just 25 per cent of men.

With countless TV shows and movies suggesting that a woman hits her sexual stride in her 30s and 40s, the research has certainly thrown a spanner in the works.

The findings suggests that female desire appears to tail off a little as they get older – just 18 per cent said their libido peaked between 24 and 30 compared to 24 per cent of men.

Interestingly, male libido appears higher throughout a man’s 30s, with 25 per cent of men saying it peaked in this decade compared to just 17 per cent of women.

And this isn’t the only aspect of sexual matters where the genders differ, with a disparity seen between perspective on libido and sexual compatibility.

48 per cent of women claimed a mismatched libido would cause them an issue in a relationship while only 41 per cent of men claimed the same.

However, 56 per cent of women said it was possible to bring different sex drives into alignment in the event of problems in comparison to 52 per cent of men.

Commenting on the findings, Lovehoney co-owner Richard Longhurst, believes the research makes for encouraging reading.

“What the results show is growing female sexual confidence which has been increasingly evident since the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey five years ago. It’s a welcome development.”

Elaborating on this point, he continued: “Women are happier to talk about how important sex is to them and how sexual happiness is the key to a successful relationship.”

“If sex is not working in a relationship, it is women who are keener to take the lead in fixing things, with more women than men saying the mismatched sex drives can be brought into alignment.”

We all know the drill.

You have a wrap or salad for lunch, and then one hour later you're reaching for the biscuit tin in the office.

And we all know that you can't have just one biscuit… goodbye calorie count for the day!

Well, according to new research, a handful of walnuts can help curb your cravings and make you feel fuller for longer.

Image result for walnuts

Researchers from the University of Georgia found that the nut contains high amounts of polyunsaturated fats which help prevent over-eating.

Nutritionist, and author of the study, Professor Jamie Cooper, said: "Appetite hormones play an important role in regulating how much we eat.

"These findings tell us that eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fats, like those found in walnuts, may favourably change appetite hormones so we can feel fuller for longer."

bowl, food, healthy

The study examined 26 young adults. They were all asked to spend a week eating a diet rich in polyunsaturated fats, and another week eating a diet rich in saturated fats.

The study found that when eating the former, there was a significant decrease in hunger levels overall.

Polyunsaturated fats can also be found in oily fish, but you can't have a tub of fish sitting on your desk now, can you?

We'd suggest bringing in a small lunchbox full of walnuts, or even incorporating them into your salad one or two days a week.
