rent crisis

Ireland's seemingly out of control housing crisis is apparently turning workers off moving to the Emerald Isle.

Times are tough when it comes to renting nationwide, and in Dublin in particular, with a Daft.ie study putting the average cost of Irish rent at a whopping €1131.00.

Tech professionals hoping to come to Ireland for job opportunities are now turning down jobs in Ireland due to the situation.

The cost and availability of rental accommodation is cited as the issue, according to a new report by tech recruitment firm Prosperity.

'Time and again, candidates from abroad have cited an internet search on the cost and availability of accommodation in Dublin (and the many associated horror stories) as their reason for rejecting a job offer,' Gary Mullan, managing director of Prosperity, told The Irish Times.

Skilled foreign workers are looking to other European countries, such as The Netherlands, Germany and Portugal, for jobs, as while the salaries are slightly lower, the cost of living and renting is significantly cheaper.

Market rents in Dublin, for example, are now 66 per cent higher than at their previous lowest point.

Outside Dublin, rents have risen 41 per cent.

With people's sheds up for rent for almost €900.00, and sex for rent craigslist adds staining the market, can you really blame people for being put off?

We are all aware of the rental crisis that Ireland is currently dealing with, and in a bid to tackle the growing issue, new proposals will be brought to the Cabinet today.

Hoping to give “rent predictability”, Minister for Housing Simon Coveney plans to limit rent increases in Dublin and Cork to four percent a year over the next three years, according to the Irish Times.

Any area that has seen rents increase by above average in the past 18 months will be designated as 'rent pressure zones' by the Residential Tenancies Board.

Once an area is designated a 'rent pressure zone', the restrictions will apply for at least three years.

This doesn’t affect existing measures which only allow for a rent review every two years.

The news comes as Threshold – a charity set up to prevent homelessness and give housing advice – launches their annual report which calls for rent and “insecure tenancies” to be dealt with.

Over the weekend, a shabby one-bed apartment was listed on popular property website, daft.ie.

Located in Dublin's north inner city, the "charming" home was seemingly located in "a sought after red brick Victorian terrace". The description went on to state that "four rent increases in three years indicates how desirable" the offering was.

"The very small floor area makes this a wonderful example of creative design. This property boasts a wonderful community spirit with communal laundry and shower facilities shared with numerous other tenants."

Dublin's rent crisis has been well documented in recent months; as Central Bank regulations narrow the numbers getting mortgages, the rental market has swelled – sometimes pushing the most vulnerable into homelessness.

Indeed, on closer inspection, this was the message behind this particular daft.ie post.

"Homelessness has reached critical levels," it continued.

"In July 2016 there were 6,525 men, women and children homeless in Ireland. It can be something small that forces someone out of their home but it could also be something small that helps get them back on their feet.
