There’s only one way to flush a toilet, right? Well not according to this microbiologist.

Philip Tierno told Business Insider that we’re actually flushing our toilets the wrong way if we leave the lid up.

According to Philip: “When you flush a toilet, the swirling water that removes your waste from the bowl also mixes with small particles of that waste, shooting aerosolised faeces into the air.”

This rather disgusting phenomenon is known as “toilet plume" (EW). This “toilet plume” can actually reach a height of 15 feet when the toilet is flushed.

Not only that, but potentially harmful bacteria and viruses can be transmitted by toilet plume as far as the sink, floor and even your toothbrush.

So, it’s a good idea to keep a cover on your toothbrush or keep it in a cabinet rather than on the sink.

It’s still unclear whether diseases can be transmitted in this manner, more research into “toilet plume” is required before scientists can determine this.

So, don’t panic if you accidentally forget to put the seat down before you flush.

“If you have unbroken skin, you’re likely to be okay," he said.

He did, however, point out that bacteria like salmonella which causes food poisoning and viruses like norovirus and hepatitis A, are transmitted by faecal particles entering the mouth (again, EW).

If someone in your family has been unwell, it’s probably prudent to put the seat down when you flush.

If you have a newer toilet, you don’t need to worry as much as this is less likely to happen with newer low-flow toilets. Older toilets are more likely to spread the dreaded “toilet plume.”

Marnie Simpson was partying yesterday – and footage captured in the early hours of the morning has some fans seriously concerned.

The Geordie Shore star was out in Shropshire's Inferno nightclub and at one stage piled into a toilet cubicle with a gaggle of three mates.

A fellow reveller spotted the reality TV personality and filmed over the top of the door while Ms Simpson was locked inside.

The resulting footage seems to show the 24-year-old Celebrity Big Brother contestant holding a phone with a line of white powder on the back of it. As she realises she's being filmed, she quickly hides the item and screams "Oh my god!"

The video was originally posted to Facebook along with a caption that claimed: "We saw Marnie off Geordie Shore sniffing the beak," but has since been removed by the original owner. The Mirror is carrying the footage here

Marnie's people are refusing to comment on the matter, but the star herself did take to Twitter to acknowledge that she was suffering after a night of partying.

Inferno was at the time packed to capacity with Miss Simpson making a personal appearance alongside boyfriend Lewis Bloor, Towie's Chris and Jon Clark, and Made In Chelsea's Sam Thompson.

The popular event had been promoted as a "Boxing Day Reality TV Special".

Every girl knows the horror of the public toilet but unfortunately when nature calls sometimes you’ve just got to brace yourself and chance the nearest loo.

So over the years people have developed a number of defence mechanisms to help make this dreaded scenario as bearable as possible and one such coping strategy involves lining the toilet seat with loo roll to protect your bottom from any nasties which may be on the seat.

But according to The Sun, this very exercise could actually expose you to more unwanted bacteria than if you chanced it and went bare-bummed.

As it turns out, toilet seat design is a lot cleverer than you’d expect because the shape and smooth surface of the potty not only creates a comfortable place to sit but also makes it extremely difficult for germs to attach themselves to the seat with the result that the average public toilet seat cleaner than the average kitchen sink.

Toilet paper on the other hand is designed to be absorbent which makes it the ideal substance for bacteria to grab on to.

When a toilet is flushed germs terrifyingly are launched into the air and therefore land on whatever toilet roll is available – which means that by picking up the bog roll to line your throne, you are actually lining it with the very germs you were trying to avoid.  Horrible, we know.

So next time you're tempted to go public, remember to leave the loo roll where it is and perhaps give hovering a go!

When we came across this contraption, our first thoughts were that it's a really good idea.

But the thing that really won it for us was the demo video that comes along with the Bridal Buddy.

As any brides (or brides-to-be) know, going to the loo in your wedding dress in no easy feat.

Dragging along your mother, sister, bridesmaid and the dog (OK, maybe not the dog) makes going to the toilet a extravagant affair when it really doesn't need to be.

Que the Bridal Buddy, which lifts up your dress and holds in it place while you do your business.

Now, for the demo. Watch and laugh ladies, because the whole scenario is more real than we think:

Luann Lee has claimed that Mel B burst in on her in a disabled toilet and gave her a big, passionate smooch on the lips.

The ex-Playboy model said: “I went into the handicapped stall because it’s bigger and I wanted to put my purse down – and she just popped in with me. She said, ‘Do you mind?’ and came right in. Then she just threw me up against the wall and started kissing me.

“She was a good kisser. Her lips are very soft and full and she has a tender touch. It was maybe a five-minute kiss and after that she started going for other areas.

“It was very passionate and sensual. She’s like a man in that way – very assertive, very determined and very wanting. I can see why they call her Scary Spice.”

Unfortunately for Mel B, she had to be quick because her HUSBAND was waiting patiently outside!

What the heck?!

We’d say Lee will REALLY see why they call her Scary Spice when Mel B finds out what she’s been saying about her!

Many ladies can stress simply at the thoughts of having to use a public bathroom.

When it comes to using a toilet that hundreds of people have used before you, do you hover, cover the toilet seat with tissue or have a carefree sort of attitude?

If you are the latter, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that your attitude is the right one to have.

Unfortunately, as the video shows, the toilet seat is not the dirtiest part of the bathroom…
