Police have recovered more than 18 guns, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition at Stephen Paddock's home and an additional 23 guns at his room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

The 64-year-old opened fire on crowds at a country music festival on the Las Vegas strip on Sunday night, before turning the gun on himself.

Sheriff Jospeph Lombardo confirmed that the death toll currently stands at 59, while a further 527 suffered injuries during the incident – making the attack the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Investigators have not yet been able to identify a motive for the shooting.

Speaking yesterday, Paddock's brother described him as as a keen gambler who had no known political or religious agenda.

"He was a guy who had money. He went on cruises and gambled," he said.

"We are completely dumbfounded. We can't understand what happened."

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, though its claims were later rejected by the FBI.

Paddock was not believed to have any militant connection, say Mr Lombardo.

"We have no idea what his belief system was," he said. "We've located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied."

Political leaders around the world have condemned the massacre, with US President, Donald Trump calling the incident “an act of pur evil.”

There have been no reports of any Irish victims, though anyone with concerns about relatives can contact the Department of Foreign Affairs' Consular Assistance Unit on 01-4082527.
