According to local reports, police in Munich have detained a suspect in relation to this morning's knife rampage in the German city.

Confirming developments, Munich police spokesman, Marcus da Gloria Martins, said: "We have arrested a person who very strongly resembles the description by witnesses, but we cannot confirm that he is the attacker."

Four of the perpetrator's six targets sustained light injuries while two escaped without injury during the attack in the Rosenheimer Platz area of the city this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.30 a.m. local time, and police requested the public remain indoors while authorities launched a manhunt.

A motive for the attack has yet to be established.

Police in Munich have appealed to the public to stay inside following a stabbing rampage in the German city earlier today.

According to reports, a number of people have been wounded after an individual brandishing a knife attacked bystanders in an underground station in the Rosenheimer Platz area of the city.

The perpetrator has since fled the scene, but the public has been reassured that authorities have galvanised in order to apprehend the individual responsible for the attack.

Appealing for the public's co-operation, police in the city tweeted: "Warning: Avoid #Rosenheimerplatz. Perpetrators are still volatile. Residents please stay in the houses # Munich.”

The alleged offender, who is believed to be in his 40s, is understood to have been wearing a green training jacket and grey trousers and carrying a sleeping mat.

The victims of the attack are not thought to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

A policewoman has been shot during an incident at a subway station in a Munich suburb this morning.

The officer and several civilians were injured by an assailant who reportedly grabbed the policewoman's gun.

According to German authorities, the incident took place during a morning police check at the Unterfoehring subway station.

The suspect was also injured and is now in custody.

Witnesses said the suspect took the officer's handgun and shot her and injured others at the S-Bahn station in the northeastern suburb of the Bavarian city.

Munich police said in a tweet:  "Several people were injured by shots. A female police officer was badly wounded."

According to The Telegraph, a Bavarian radio station reported: "According to police information, it is probably not a terrorist attack."

Police later said there had been "no political or religious motive" in the shooting.

According to emerging reports, a teenage boy from Co Galway has died following a swimming accident in Germany.

Officials in Munich have confirmed that 16-year-old Jack McHugh passed away in Munich Hospital yesterday following the tragic incident last week.

The teen, who had been swimming in the Wurn river with two of his friends, had been in a critical condition in the German hospital, and tragically lost his fight for life on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Tuam Herald, Cllr Tom McHugh said: “The authorities recovered him from the water quickly and the doctors treating him tried very hard to save his life but by Monday of this week it became apparent that there was irreparable damage to his organs and he passed away at midday today.”

It has been established that Jack, who had been visiting an uncle in the German city, was a sport enthusiast who had recently completed his Junior Cert at St. Jarlath’s College in Tuam.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out before his body will be returned to Ireland.

Jack is survived by his parents and two younger sisters.

An understandably distressed mother has now spoken out about the moment her eight-year-old son saw the Munich shooter loading his gun in a McDonald's toilet… before targeting children and opening fire on them.

The woman, named by CNN as Lauretta, said she was with her child was in a bathroom when the killer struck.

"My son saw in the toilet the man loading his gun. It was a pistol.

"That's where he loaded his weapon.

"Boom, boom, boom, I heard.

"He's killing the children. They were sitting to eat. They can't run."

She added that she heard the gunman say: "Allahu Akbar" meaning 'God is great'.

Mail Online has named 18-year-old ‘loner’ Ali Sonboly as the perpetrator who killed at least ten people in the attack.

The Iranian-German teenager – who complained that he had been bullied for seven years – “targeted innocent children and then turned his gun on himself following the massacre,” the website additionally reports.

Shockingly, Police are investigating claims that Sonboly lured his young victims to their deaths with a promise of free McDonald's food.

A fake Facebook page reportedly told youngsters to gather at the restaurant yesterday afternoon for the special offer.

Munich Police President Hubertus Andrae has confirmed that a number of adolescents were among the dead and that several children were injured.

Armed and armoured cops are still on the streets around the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum shopping mall in the centre of the German city.

ISIS-related social media accounts have been sharing reports of the attack, but reports in German newspaper Bild suggests right-wing extremists are responsible.

The shopping centre is next to the Munich Olympic stadium, where the Palestinian militant group Black September took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and eventually killed them during the 1972 Olympic Games.

The attack took place a week after a 17-year-old asylum-seeker wounded passengers on a German train in an axe rampage claimed by Islamic State.
