This was the week that sparked MAJOR controversy in the advertising world: a totes-awks Sprite campaign featured prominently on a male-focused lifestyle website… and proceeded to raise all the eyebrows.

Why? Because the ad included lines such as, "She's seen more ceilings… than Michaelangelo," and "You're not popular… You're easy."

Eeek!

Critics were quick to take to social media to air their concerns in the aftermath, with 2fm presenter Louise McSharry tweeting: "SERIOUSLY with this takeover in 2016?"

And now Coca-Cola Ireland – the makers of Sprite – has apologised for the error of judgement.

"We're sorry for any offence caused by the #BrutallyRefreshing Sprite campaign in Ireland, which was intended to provide an edgy but humorous take on a range of situations," a spokesperson said.

They went on to state that the company "recognised that on this particular occasion," the content of the ad was sub-standard. 

"We apologise. The campaign has now come to an end and the advert in question will not appear again," the spokesperson concluded.
