With temperatures getting dangerously close to freezing, your body needs warm and nourishing foods to keep it going. That doesn't mean you need to fill up on high-fat meals though – there are some amazing superfoods out there which are just as hearty and filling as a bowl of cheesy pasta!

Here are a few to check out next time you arrive home with chattering teeth and an empty belly…

1. Porridge
You can't get a better winter breakfast than a warming bowl of porridge. Oats are full of fibre and plant-based protein so you'll feel full right up to lunchtime. For a brekkie that really packs a punch, add some healthy fats like almond butter and some seeds such as chia, flax or pumpkin seeds. It beats a bowl of Frosties anyway!

2. Chilli
This versatile dish can be made with red meat, veggies or even Quorn. Add heaps of tomatoes and beans for a protein-heavy meal that is delicious and warming. To spice things up, add garlic and chili peppers – these thermogenic foods naturally heat your body and in turn will increase your metabolism. Win-win!

3. Butternut squash
The sweet, nutty taste of this winter squash is perfect for soups or stews. For a healthier alternative to potato, why not try baked butternut squash seasoned with garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper? Delish!

4. Ginger tea
Another natural body warmer, ginger tea with lemon and honey is a great winter beverage. Simply add a few thin slices of fresh ginger, a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of honey to a cup of hot water and you're good to go. This immune boosting tea is great for easing colds and sore throats, too.

5. Quinoa
You might be used to eating quinoa cold in salads, but this ancient South American grain is an amazing alternative to rice when eaten hot. Add it to stir-fries or soups for a filling protein boost, or make a quinoa porridge using milk and a touch of vanilla.

6. Apples
Apples are a healthy snack at any time, but they really come into their own when baked or stewed with cinnamon for a simple winter dessert.
