German police have arrested the man who executed an axe attack in a train station in Dusseldorf last night.

Seven people were wounded in the attack.

Police described the suspect as being a man from the former Yugoslavia, who is believed to suffer from mental health problems.

"A 36-year-old man burst out of a local train wielding an axe," explained Irish Times Berlin correspondent Derek Scally to Newstalk.

"He had already attacked two people on the train."

"On the platform, he ran amok injuring passengers. He ran several metres across several tracks, jumped from a bridge down several metres, injured himself, broke several bones and was taken into custody."

Three of the victims were very seriously injured, but none are in critical condition.
