UK General election

by

The UK General Election is underway, with the votes being counted and announced over the course of the day.

One interesting development so far is that fact that the UK parliament will have its highest-ever number of female MPs after this election.

The intake for 2017 has surpassed 200 female parliament members.

This just outstrips the 196 women elected to the House of Commons in the last election.

'It shows there is much more to be done to achieve gender equality in politics and public life,’ chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society Katie Ghose told The Metro.

‘Whatever the result on June 8 – and it looks like there will be a small rise in the proportion of women elected – parties need to up their game, not just for the next Parliamentary elections but for our local councils, metro mayor roles and institutions across the UK.'

‘We cannot settle for incremental change. It’s time for some real momentum on women’s representation in politics.’

Voting is currently under way in the UK General Election, with polling stations opening across the country.

Heightened security has been introduced at some polling stations in the wake of the recent wave of terror attacks.

The campaigning for this election was suspended twice.

The first instance was after the Manchester attack at Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman concert, during which 22 people were killed by a suicide bomber.

It was suspended a second time after the London Bridge attack, which saw seven people lose their lives.

The counting of ballots will begin when polls close at 10pm.

It is expected that there will be an indication as to whether Labour or Conservatives took the lead in this election by tomorrow morning.
