We've all been there, finding ourselves having to pull an all-nighter to finish (or begin) that final college assignment we promised ourselves we would start early this time.

Usually, people turn to coffee and energy drinks to get the boost of energy needed to stay working through the night but it turns out there are a few more effective ways to keep yourself alert.

Stay cool
Resist the urge to turn on the heating, no matter what the temperature. Keep warm by layering up on clothing as central heating will only serve to make you feel sleepier.

Walk it off
Feeling like you might doze off? Go for a walk. By keeping your body moving, you'll keep your brain functioning normally.

Drink water instead of coffee
Although coffee may give you that quick burst of energy, in the long term it leaves you feeling even more tired and dehydrated. Stick to H2O instead.

Swap those energy drinks for some Vitamin B
Rather than choosing a Monster or Red Bull, choose a healthy drink with added Vitamin B instead as it will help keep your brain alert. Fruit juice, vegatable juice and dairy-based drinks are all good choices.

Lather on some Vicks Vapo Rub (honestly!)
Not just for a chesty cough.. The strong eucalyptus scent will stimulate the senses and help you stay alert for longer.
